Our Opinion

A great resort with an amazing and large pool area. The buffet items are good and there are a variety of a la carte restaurants to choose from including a great Italian restaurant. The resort has very attentive and friendly staff. The pool area is lively and the kids pool is one of the best in Riviera Maya. This resort is perfect for both couples and families with younger or older children. This resort, combined with its sister properties, the Barcelo Maya Tropical, Barcelo Maya Beach and Barcelo Maya Caribe make for a huge complex. If you want all the benefits of the Barcelo Maya Tropical, but want a step up in accommodations and service, try the Barcelo Maya Palace next door. You still get access to all areas of the resort complex but in a higher-end setting and finer dining options.

Very Nice

We Stayed here in 2006. The resort, staff, food and amenities were great. Very busy resort as there are 4 or five resorts in this chain. The restaurant selection was ok. Rooms were clean and the grounds were clean.

Service is top notch

My family and I had a wonderful first time experience. The rooms were ok. We weren't looking for anything too fancy since most of our time we were going to be out of the room in the pool or checking out the sights. The staff was marvelous. Were attentive and fixed any problems we encountered. One person to single out is Fredy from the front desk.If you read this, thank you! We'll definitely be back :)

A lot of the good, a few bad

We stayed as Premiere guest for nine days with a family of 6 with 4 teenagers. there were a lot of nice amenities: an active volleyball court, basketball near the beach, pool activities all day etc. My teens loved it and even got scuba certified while there although as to be expected that was a hefty extra fee. The beach was rocky but beautiful. Be careful of rocks even in the lounging portion of the sand - it's a broken toe waiting to happen. The resort was beautiful and for the most part very clean. My husband and I probably would pick a different resort however. The the beach only has palm trees for shade, no umbrellas/cabanas of any kind. The restaurants are HOT, minimal a/c which made it uncomfortable to eat. The staff - asides from a few folks there were very few smiles or chit chat, even at the bar. It was uncomfortable almost. There are extra charges to use the bowling alley and tennis courts after dark. One of the bigger annoyances? Dinner reservations. I had read the reviews and so upon check in I immediately sat down to make all of our reservations at once. Most of the next nine days were ALREADY booked uless we wanted to eat at 9:30 or 4:30. Some days they were just not available at all. You are not allowed to show up and wait for a table, you must have a receipt that shows you have a reservation. If during the day you want to make a different reservation you need to physically go to the desk, cancel the original and get a new receipt. The ability to make any reservations closes at 3 pm. When we would go to dinner the restaurants were half full so it seemed almost a deliberate attempt to serve fewer guests at the more expensive a la cartes. The food itself was very good. If you are a wine drinker you are going to want to stop on the way in for a few bottles and an opener. The included wine was seriously undrinkable - like might have made me sick bad i I hadn't put it down after one sip - and I'm usually a ten dollar a bottle type of wine drinker so I'm the opposite of fancy in this category LOL. There is a liquor store there but of course it's expensive and there is a ten dollar charge to uncork your wine for you from room service. Almost every dinner we would spend thirty to fifty dollars for one of their cheaper bottles. ;There is nightly entertainment but it repeats every few days and includes some brutal kareoke quite often. The other shows were pretty unimpressive as well. Finally we had three rooms and they were unable to put us right next to each other even though we requested it and although they said they would call us to move us later in the week they never did. We went back down to the desk a few times and eventually did get rooms closer together which worked out great. My overall impression is that when I go to an all-inclusive I don't like to be thinking about money or reservations the entire time. I want to pay upfront and then feel like a guest. This was lacking here unfortunately. To those who book and aren't in the premium category it's even worse - up charges for certian liquor, towel restrictions and wifi charges. Customer service was just ok. Our room keys stopped working about every day and a half and we needed to keep track of them because only two keys were included before we incurred extra charges. It's a little thing but come on. For active kids the amenities were great and we were able to have a great time even with the inconveniences. The premier lounge was very nice and had great coffee, snacks etc. We were very satisfied with the food.

Many positive but also some negative experiences with this resort.Positives:-Very nice beach, although there are some rocky parts, it is beautiful. The rocky parts have many different types of fish around them so it is fun to snorkel right at the beach. Saw many different fish, some basic corals.-Pools close to beach access is fantastic, Huge pools, just perfect, lots of shaded areas around pool if you are willing to reserve your spot early in the morning.-Central buffet shared with Tropical had amazing selections from Breakfast to lunch & dinner. Best buffet that I have seen in my many travels.-Good al la carte restaurants -Shaded area between building, this is really nice in case of extreme sun or rain, fabulous idea.-Snack bars close to pool and beach have a more limited menu than the buffet,, but still a good selection. Great for an afternoon snack if you have a late dinner. Drinks actually better here than at the pool bars.-Clean and tidy site, just immaculate all around-Photographers on site in the early afternoon to take pictures with animals or if you want to book a family photo session. We did and I love my new pictures.-Cleaning of the rooms and change of towels was always done on time and perfect.-For families with young kids the kids pools and play areas are truly amazing.-Mini golf is included until 7PM, this was a nice activity, access to the mini golf is thru the bowling area.-Medical clinic and pharmacy on-site in the shopping area.Negative:-The wait at the reception to get the room keys, they seriously are in the stone ages and need a lean six sigma process review, what a waste of time and truly started our vacation on the wrong foot.-We booked a double bed room for our adults sons and they ended up in a king bed. Really no willingness to change the room, this also was frustrating.-Booking the a la cartes has to be done on arrival and even then really challenging to find seating for 4 people. They offer 5 a la carte for a 7 nights stay, but they are really hard to book. Luckily the buffet is fantastic and compensated-The humidity in the rooms was very high and we had a musky smell all week (July). We were on a 2nd floor, but it truly was a huge disappointment.-Refill of mini bar was not always done properly so we often had to call to get this done. -Drinks ate the pool bars are not good, we struggled in getting a good cocktail, and we tried many.-Ratio of families with young kids was very high, lots of screaming.

  • Victoria V :
just came back, one of the worst hotels I been to. Food is horrible , no AC in the hotel

we just got back last week, and I wanted to warn people about this hotel First thing is that food in buffet is disgusting and tasteless. They serve same exact food everyday that look pretty but have no taste. Secondly, the shelves are always half empty, and you always have to wait in line and wait until they bring out the food because they don't make enough . Especially the pizza shelves and the kids food is always empty , and you have to walk to manager nd ask him when they bring out the food. Room service cost money which is $10 per plate and is even worse. The hotel is cheap nd doesn't turn on the AC. It is so hot in the lobby and in restaurants, we were sitting there and sweating. The managament doesn't help with anything, we tried calling them couple times an coming to lobby which they made us wait for an hour to talk to manager and he didn't do anything and was rude. In casino you have to pay for drinks, also to get ice cream by the pool you have to pay $5. I been to many hotels and this is by far the worst. I was in Mexico last month in new hotel called Ocean rivera paradise and it ws amazing, much cheaper and food was amazing . The only good thing about this hotel were the swimming pool and nice Beach .
