Our Opinion

A great resort with an amazing and large pool area. The buffet items are good and there are a variety of a la carte restaurants to choose from including a great Italian restaurant. The resort has very attentive and friendly staff. The pool area is lively and the kids pool is one of the best in Riviera Maya. This resort is perfect for both couples and families with younger or older children. This resort, combined with its sister properties, the Barcelo Maya Tropical, Barcelo Maya Beach and Barcelo Maya Caribe make for a huge complex. If you want all the benefits of the Barcelo Maya Tropical, but want a step up in accommodations and service, try the Barcelo Maya Palace next door. You still get access to all areas of the resort complex but in a higher-end setting and finer dining options.

Great resort, highly recommend!

Food was amazing, had a wide variety of everything for everyone. Beach was very nice as was the water. Pools were great. Want to give a big shoutout to Luis Castro and Ramon from the main lobby bar who made our stay so much better!

Great Resort!! Everything you need is here

I've been to may resorts all over mexico, and this has to be the best resort I've stayed from all the other resorts I have stayed at. Everything from entertainment is in the hotel which is a big plus and avoids having to leave the resort. We also want to give a special shoutout to Cap. Luis Castro from Colonial who treated my family very well and is in charge of the buffet restaurant in the barcelo colonial. I would definitelyr return to this hotel. Beautiful Resort.

You will not regret staying here

My partner and I travelled to this resort together for a romantic getaway; I had stayed at the Barcelo Maya Palace once before, so it was my second time to the overall property, while as it was my partner's first time in Mexico. I can't recommend this place enough. We had some problems, which I will detail below, but this property overall exceeds any resort in it's category I've been too in Mexico or the Dominican that has the same 4-5 star rating. Comparing this to the Gran Bahia, right next door, or even the Iberostar Punta Cana, both of them were a 3-star at best compared to the Barcelo Maya Colonial.THE BADHousekeeping: 1 - We had not had our sheets changed by the 4th day were were there on a 7 day visit. It was supposed to be changed every other day. When we got back to the room after lunch on day 3 and the sheets hadn't been changed, when they should have been the day before, we called housekeeping and they said they would send someone to change them. By the time we left for dinner no one had come. We actually made sure for the 3 hours between when we called and went to dinner one of us was in the room to greet housekeeping and make they changed the sheets. Because they hadn't come by the time we left for dinner I took my eyeliner and marked the inside of the pillow cases and the inside of two corners of the bed sheets, both fitted and flat. When we got back from dinner the bed was made and all the sheets with the marks I put on them were still on the bed! The next morning (our 4th day) I called the front desk and told them what had happened. They apologized and said someone would come right away. 2 hours later no one had come and I had called two more times. So I stripped the sheets off the bed and carried them to the lobby of the hotel and put them on the check-in counter. I didn't yell or make a scene, but it was enough a manager came running over. Long story short, we got updated to Premium Level wristbands for the last 2.5 days we were there. It should not have been that hard to get sheets changed. 2 - Turndown service was not provided once in 7 days and was supposed to happen daily. After day 4 I just completely gave up on that!3 - We kept leaving notes and called asking for them not to leave pop in our fridge, water and beer only, and we would come back to half a fridge of pop every day. We would pull it out and put the cans on the dresser and ask them to take them and they would leave them there. By the end of the week we must of had 40+ cans of pop in our room all piled and they just kept leaving more. It was more annoying then anything.4 - The pillows are really big and thick. I came home with the worst neck pain and actually had to sleep with no pillow the last two nights because our neck hurt so badly. We tried to get different pillows throughout the week but were told the entire resort used the same pillows so they could not offer us another option. It was like two pillows stuff in one pillow case but it wasn't. They were dense, thick and unforgiving. Bring your own if you can!Service:1 - We were really looking forward to dinner at the Japanese restaurant in the mall. We were at a table with 3 other couples and a guy that did not have a reservation had gotten into the restaurant and sat down with the two girls at one end and was harassing them. Finally the staff came over and removed him but he got back in two more times and completely interrupted and took away from the dinner. To add to this our waitress was terrible. Our food came out wrong, same as others at the table because she's given the wrong order details to the chef. Our dessert took 45 minutes to come out after they took our dinner plates! We watched tables who ordered after us get everything and leave and new tables got seated and we were still waiting for our deserts. We left highly unimpressed and did not leave a tip for the one and only time our whole trip.Side note: The couple directly next to us had their room broken into by hotel staff and the Police had to come and they got moved and items were stolen. They were wealthy people compared to us and I hate to say it but they were being a bit flashy with expensive watches and jewelry so not the smartest thing to do if you don't want people targeting you. I personally leave the good stuff at home when I travel to Mexico.Front Desk Staff:I had to pretty much make a scene in the lobby to get their real attention. They would just smile and blow me off, or tell me someone was coming and nothing was getting done; I wasn't being taken seriously. I should not have had to wait 4 days to get sheets changed, catch them in a lie twice and bring my sheets to the lobby just to ensure housekeeping didn't put them back on our bed that time. I expect the front desk to do better.Pools:They should have one pool that adults can swim in until at least 11-12pm. It's so disappointing to not be able to use a pool or hot tub after dark. This goes for all resorts!THE GOODGrounds - The landscaping, pools and property are stunning. The resorts laid out in a way that's super easy to find where you need to go and you can walk everywhere, nothing is so far away you need a shuttle. We walked through the resort just to see all the lobby's because they were so unique and beautiful. This resort is well maintained and impressive.Food & Restaurant Service:1 - The food is amazing everywhere we ate except for the Brazilian restaurant on the grounds. The buffets are amazing, not just is the selection great but the actual food is good, not bland and very fresh and well prepared. You can pay $20 USD once you arrive to have dinner at the French restaurant at the Maya Palace and we recommend you do. It's the fanciest dinner you'll have, the service lead by our main waiter Jaime was 5-star and the food was to die for. It was my partners birthday, and I had just mentioned it to the hostess when we walked in but hadn't contacted them in advance because he doesn't like a fuss. They gave us the royal treatment; it was the best night of our entire vacation, both this visit and my first time there seven years earlier.Special mentions also go to Cesar Hernandez, our server at the Palmoras Grill (Tropical) who was friendly, helpful and made our dinner memorable by his great personality and service. Juan De la Cruz, our server at the Santa Fe restaurant was also great and made for a special evening. Entertainment: I've seen shows at Barcelo, Iberostar and Gran Bahia 4+ star resorts and by far the entertainment at the Barcelo is the best. It's actually worth going to the stadium to catch the shows. During the day there are tons of activities that are fun and people are participating in.Every trip you take there will be good and bad. I provided details on the things that I felt needed to be highlighted and good to know for people heading there to keep an eye on or be prepared for. I can't stress enough that this is the best resort I've been too and my previous stay at Maya Palace I had none of these issues. Go to this resort and have the vacation of a lifetime with your loved one or family; you'll be glad you did!

Dream come true honeymoon!!!

We just loved our honeymoon at Barcelo Maya Colonial! It was really outstanding and amazing, from the moment we stepped into the hotel. A slice of paradise! Rooms & Maid service:The hotel, restaurants and rooms are very well-air-conditioned and extremely clean. I'm quite sensitive about cleanliness but I was totally amazed over this hotel. At any time of the day, there was always someone cleaning: the hallway, hotel surroundings, ... It was spotless! The maid service was amazing, very nice, friendly and helpful stuff, towels were replaced every day, they also made our bed every day and changed the sheets when we asked them.Food:Big buffet with very, very tasty, varied food. We were always taken to the table by service staff and they were all very nice, always took care of us. They always asked us and brought us drinks to the table although we had them fresh at the buffet. We were also amazed over the a-la-carte restaurants too - what an experience!Pool and the beach:The pool is fantastic, it is very big and service at the pool bars is crazy good. The cocktails were extremely tasty and spirit brands were high quality. And the beach - uauu - the beach is just paradise. The water and the sand are clean, you also don't have to fight for a free deckchairs at 7am, there are plenty of them, we were provided with new beach towels every day, and you can always find a shadow under the palm tree, which was also important for me. There are many water activities, you can also go swim with the dolphins, and there was always something happening by the pool - music, dancing, water gymnastics, other activities, ...Party and entertainment:There is a great party place - Jaguar disco Night Club at the resort, and hotel's entertainment team was really amazing - every evening there was a show at the hotel's teater. There is even more entertainment and shops at Maya Mall shopping center at the resort, and Plaza Mexicana - traditional Mexican handcrafts. It's all there!! You don't even have to leave the resort! Then 24 hour Strikers bar, with foods and drinks available at any time, sports and bowling center, pool tables, there is even a casino in Maya Mall ... During the day you can play table tennis, tennis, mini golf, basketball, water basketball, pool (billiards), ... It is just incredible!Overall:Our experience was excellent! The staff is very friendly and very well organized and the level of service is very high. The resort is huge and we loved every minute of it. We would definitely come back to Bacelo Maya Colonial! It was far the best vacation EVER!!

So disappointed in this experience

Check in Issues: We were travelling with a 3 month old baby, for a family wedding. There were 55 people staying at this resort for the wedding, and we had booked a premium ocean front junior suite and requested a crib in the room. Upon arrival, we were not greeted at all. There was no welcome cocktail nor did anyone direct us to check in. I eventually went up to the check in desk and was told that I could not check in there, as we were premium guests. We were directed to the premium lounge, where we waited for over an hour to check in. This is with our baby, having travelled all day, needing a change of clothes and a rest. We finally got our room, and went there. The patio door had been left ajar so the room was unbelievably warm, as the air conditioning doesn’t work with the door open. Our fan was broken as well. It took about 30 minutes for our bags to be delivered to our room. There was no crib in the room, however, we had brought our pack and play as we heard that often at these resorts cribs are hard to acquire. A la carte bookings:As we were travelling as a large group for a family wedding, we were hoping to be able to coordinate some bookings at the a la cartes. We totally understood the rules around booking a la cartes, as non premium guests only had a limited number of reservations allowed. We were just hoping for some help in coordinating bookings at a similar time at the same restaurant. Brenda in the premium lounge was lovely and very helpful and allowed us to coordinate bookings for one family dinner of 15 people. The next day we went in again to try to coordinate another set of bookings for 16 people. Alejandra was unbelievably rude to me. She said, and this is a direct quote “enough allowances have been made for this wedding and there are rules that need to be followed.” We were in no way trying to break the rules, we were just trying to get some help in organizing the bookings. We were very happy to present the necessary vouchers for the reservations for the non-premium guests and she was extremely unhelpful. In my opinion, the resort should not accept large bookings for weddings if they have no intention of helping family members spend time together for dinners. I have been to other weddings at all-inclusives and have had lots of help coordinating reservations. My sister had attempted to organize some of this in advance and her emails frequently went unanswered. Buffets:Many times we entered a buffet and were not given any service. No drinks were provided and our table was not bussed. This being said, we had some excellent service at the buffet, from Juan at the beach grill in particular. I also was told several times that I could not bring my stroller into the breakfast buffet. My baby is only 3 months old so if he can’t use his stroller, I would have to hold him as he is too small for a high chair. The restaurant was mostly empty and I have no idea why the stroller could not be accommodated. Room service & Maid serviceWe ordered room service twice. Each time it took over an hour to arrive and was bone cold when it did come. As far as maid service went, 5 days out of the 7, dirty glasses were left in our room and the towels were not replaced, even though we indicated we needed them replaced. Also, our air conditioning did not work well, so the room was constantly damp and muggy. Overall: It seems like the staff has no idea what is going on, and has no idea what appropriate customer service is for a 5 star resort. There was no consistency in policy or level of service and it seemed to depend on who you were talking to what was allowed. I have stayed at 3 star resorts that had far better service. I was very excited to stay here and my sister was excited to host her wedding here. She will be reviewing as well, but there was absolutely no acknowledgement of the number of people she brought to the resort. Across the board, our group found the staff very unhelpful, rude and generally unpleasant. They acted like we were an inconvenience. It is hands down the worst experience I have had at an all-inclusive.Oh and also, the kids slides at our pool, which was a large reason why my sister chose this resort was closed for maintenance the whole week. We never once saw anyone performing any maintenance on it.
