Our Opinion

This resort is the other half of the Barcelo Maya Colonial. Together they make up a great resort for families and couples alike. A great kids pool and lots of activities make this resort popular with families. A lively pool area and disco on site, make this resort popular for young and active couples. You also have access to the sister properties next door, the Barcelo Maya Beach and Barcelo Maya Caribe. The beach area here is great as well, white sand, clear water and lots of sun lounge chairs. If you want all the benefits of the Barcelo Maya Tropical, but want a step up in accommodations and service, try the Barcelo Maya Palace next door. You still get access to all areas of the resort complex but in a higher-end setting and finer dining options.

This deluxe resort has all the hallmarks of a Barcelo five-star experience. Almost a thousand guestrooms, six restaurants, six bars, and over a mile of the sugary white sand beach which has made the Mayan Riviera famous. The Barcelo Maya Tropical Beach depicts elegant Mexican style and grants full access to the four sections of the mega complex! An excellent choice for groups as it features expansive meeting facilities.

Location: On the beach, 20 min to Playa del Carmen, 50 min from the airport.

  • Located on a great stretch of beach
  • Huge pool areas
  • Upscale spa
  • Kids and Teen clubs plus family rooms, kids' pool and special spa treatments for little ones
  • Free access to 3  other hotels in the Barcelo Maya complex
  • TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence

This was absolutely terrible. There was not one good thing. Our suitcases sat in lobby for HOURS until we finally walked up and took 2 at a time with no one saying anything to us. All inclusive is false- you only get a certain amount of dinner reservations for the "restaurants" and the buffet/grill food is absolutely terrible. Restaurant food was mediocre at best. Premium liquor was more $. Service was awful and staff was the rudest I have ever experienced. Hotel was overcrowded and dirty including but not limited to moldIn showers and on bed skirt. We were told different rules by different staff members. Was never once waited on one night for dinner having to retrieve our own drinks (which were being served by staff) and were then reprimanded for serving ourselves. I cannot stress how rude staff was. One restaurant employee even suggesting 2 of us share a seat at dinner in an incredibly rude manner. Worst experience ever.

Too much for basic stuff!

We went with 2 adults and a 22 month old child, from July 19 to July 23.Took us one hr to check in (only one person ahead of us).Once in the room the floor was wet with humidity all the time, the bed sheets felt like sand paper and the pillows were WAY too high. The room smelled like paint, since they recently painted the room. This means there were paint spots everywhere. We had to call the maid to clean up the bathtub since there were pubious hair left from previous guests. The ceiling in the bathroom was leaking. We tried calling the front desk to request a crib and the land line never connected the room to the front desk. We went back to guest services to reserve our spots for the a la carte restaurants. They were pretty much all booked up for the entire time we were going to be there. The only dinner appointments they had was for 5.30 (who eats that early while on vacation??).Since the phone was not working we then proceeded to the front desk to ask for a crib for the baby. At first they said they didn't have one available. Then they could not find it. Once i started being more stern with the personal they suddenly found a crib within 5 minutes. We had free wifi from barcelo club, but it took us another hour and a visit to 3 different lobby's to get the login and password. The food in the buffet is average, with a good amount of options, but nothing super tasteful. The pool at the tropical was always busy and the music always loud, including night time.If you want a vacation to use the amenities without assistance then you may enjoy this place, but if you ever need assistance then skip this place, AWFUL customer service.

We liked it there!

We stayed at Barcelo Beach a few years ago, when Carribe section was under construction, and we liked it very much. We knew that Barcelo is old, reputable chain, you expect a certain level of comfort and the quality, so we decided to come back; the improvements they made to the resort grounds and facilities in the last few years are quite astounding: new GYM - (includes spa, which we haven't used) is the top notch, not only design wise, it is smartly equipped with the best machines we have ever seen in public gyms, spacey, has dedicated areas for yoga/stretching and the cycling room, lots of cardio machines and treadmills, decent weight racks as well as a kettlebell rack, well A/C-ed, towels and cold water, classes, many other things that made our morning workouts so enjoyable. The BEACH is beautiful and clean, lots of palm trees, plenty of new beach chairs, more comfortable model, absolutely no need to reserve early in the morning; I wouldn't comment on chairs availability at the pools since we always stay at the beach. During our stay the resort have never run out of towels; I was reading other guests' comments and was really surprised, we got 2 towels each on the 1st day and had been exchanging them every night without problems and on the last night of our stay we exchanged them for 2 cards which we returned on the check-out.We liked the food. We have been to 5* resorts in Mexico with larger food selections, but for us 20 more varieties of the salads and meats don't make a lot of a difference; as far as everything is super fresh, well prepared and presented, enough choices - various fish, meats, cheeses, soups, veggies, fruits, nothing to complain about; everywhere in central buffets of Tropical / Colonial (we went twice to Carribe too) or at the beach buffets we could always find everything we needed and more. For those who want to sway away from their diets for a lil while we have seen amazingly appetizing desserts and pastries in the buffets.I want to compliment Barcelo on the staff selection and training, we hope this is the standard for all Barcelo hotels as we noticed the same a few years ago at the Beach. The buffets are spotless clean and 'no fly' zones, tables are set up and drinks served promptly, grounds are super clean, public washrooms are maintained clean and properly supplied and all this is done with out much noticeable hassle. At this point i want to thank the front desk personnel, Jonathan in particular. We had some bad luck with the room we were given on arrival; smell of mold and wet floors. The way our concerns were addressed was the most professional and consistent. Jonathan called in the services, personally visited our room and stayed there while repairs were done, allowing us to go and enjoy our time, then he followed up twice and since the problem persisted he moved us next day to another room where we were happy for the rest of the stay. Good job, Jonathan, and thank you very much! On late afternoon time we liked to walk the entire resort from one end to another, every time choosing a different route, Mayan Mall and the Market are fun to visit, just strolling along or staying in the sport bar, watching soccer or WWA, browsing shops, there are cool bars and beautiful cozy corners everywhere, the grounds and fountains are picturesque, also there was always something happening in either of three theaters, a piano player in Colonial lobby bar - every day - lots of things to do if you are willing to move around a bit. There was one place where we had our favorite time every late afternoon, Tropical lobby bar Tequila. I cannot emphasize enough how the right person can make a huge difference in the experience which essentially reflects on the entire resort and makes you want to come back. Asuncion Solis, the bartender at the bar Tequila - what a nice fella! knowledgeable of the spirits and rituals, friendly yet not frivolous, very respectful and professional attitude, we have never seen him daydreaming, once all guests get their 'poison' he is either cutting limes or sorting mint or cleaning the area, taking care of little things here and there; our glasses were never empty, and the drinks were awesome! Artemio, another bartender at Tequila - always smiling and very sweet!Thank you , guys, - we hope to see you around next time.A few things Barcelo Tropical may want to look at: - with the beach area being remarkably clean the beach garbage containers were not emptied for at least 3 days (Jul 20-22) and were overflown to the point ppl were just leaving garbage around, that is definitely an oversight and easily fixable; - we wish there would be more flexibility in internet service packages, 5-days package is too little, 10-days is too much; yes, there are free wi-fi zones - but they work on weird schedules and locations.- adding to the menue some sodas and juices with less sugar content or with natural sweeteners like stevea or erithrinol would be much more progressive and thoughtful, they are good for cocktails too; - freshly squeezed smoothies bars at the buffets need a bit more greens added to the selection: bell pepper, cucumbers, zucchinis.- protein drinks in the gym fridge (can be charged to the room) would be nice.In overall we had a great time, would come back without much contemplation if the price is right.

Don't visit this resort!

The resort is beautiful and the staff were very nice and courteous. The rooms are horrible and the management could care less about the issues. We wasted the first day of our trip dealing with the front desk. First room had a terrible bleach smell that burned our eyes. The front desk sent a person from house keeping. He walked into the room and agreed his eyes were burning as well. He returned 30 minutes late with a can of air freshener. The staff at the front desk finally agreed to move us after an hour of me complaining. The next room was filthy! Ants all over the bathroom and mold and mildew everywhere! See some of the pictures attached. I continued to complain all week, but nothing was done. Only after having my travel agent call the resort did they agree to credit me for the wifi charges for the week (about $75). Our room at the Best Western the night before our flight was beautiful and clean and half the price. DO NOT STAY AT THIS RESORT!!!!

First off, I have no complaints of the staff and outdoor area of Barcelo! All the staff were very helpful and courteous, the beaches were beautiful, the pools were big and very clean! I've heard only good things about Barcelo.. BUT....I WILL never return to Barcelo Maya Grand Resort in Riviera Maya. You would think travelling with a 21 month old was stressful enough, what about 4 rooms in 2 days on top of that!We started in the Tropical, first room had issues with the AC so everything was wet; the floors, the bed, table tops, EVERYTHING! We had to keep our sandals on because our slippers soaked right through. There was mold; in the shower, on the shower head, mirror stand, a clump of someone else's hair on the floor, pubic hair under the toilet seat, the list goes on. Day 2, they moved us to another room and upgraded us to premium level. No moisture problem, we were able to walk around bare feet and with the slippers, everything looked fine, except the bed skirt had mold on it, no big deal we've already seen worse! So before dinner we stopped into the lobby to ask for the sheets to get changed. When we returned from dinner, the sheets were not changed and we also noticed a colony of ants scattering as the lights came on. I had to put the baby to sleep so hubs went down to front desk and informed them, they called up to the room and mentioned they wouldn't be able to move us to another room till morning. Day 3, we got transferred to Maya Beach and now the 3rd room was 2 double beds when we've always had 1 king, the light in the washroom was flickering, the coffee flask was chipped, and blood on the duvet, so I called down and they transferred us to our 4th room! By the 4th room, I just gave up, there were no bugs or mold but just dirty! I ended up spending the rest of my day cleaning and disinfecting the whole room!I spoke with the assistant manager at Maya Beach and she explained that at the time I checked in they didn't have a king room available, which was never mentioned to me.. They didn't offer to place us in a better room or to another hotel, they kept telling me they're completely booked and this is all they can do for us. They told us they couldn't do anymore for us because they already gave us the premium level upgrade after our first incident, but what about the next 3 incidents? BUT I asked if we paid for an upgrade to the palace if they'll have a room for us? And of course they did; if we paid!Along these times of complaints I kept asking to speak with the GM of the resort NOT just the hotel alone, but they kept telling me he was either in a meeting or not on site. Clearly trying to avoid talking to me!I am so disappointed in how management dealt with us, I feel cheated and taken advantage of. If we didn't have our toddler with us I wouldn't have been so picky. They didn't care that my baby had technically been travelling for 48hrs because of all the packing and unpacking, moving to different rooms and hotels. They had absolutely no consideration to how stressful it was being trapped in disgusting rooms! It felt like they really didn't care how we felt at the end of the day because they already gave us a premium upgrade. I will definitely NOT be returning and also NOT recommending to my friends or family.
