Our Opinion

This resort is the other half of the Barcelo Maya Colonial. Together they make up a great resort for families and couples alike. A great kids pool and lots of activities make this resort popular with families. A lively pool area and disco on site, make this resort popular for young and active couples. You also have access to the sister properties next door, the Barcelo Maya Beach and Barcelo Maya Caribe. The beach area here is great as well, white sand, clear water and lots of sun lounge chairs. If you want all the benefits of the Barcelo Maya Tropical, but want a step up in accommodations and service, try the Barcelo Maya Palace next door. You still get access to all areas of the resort complex but in a higher-end setting and finer dining options.

Barcelo Maya Tropical

This deluxe resort has all the hallmarks of a Barcelo five-star experience. Almost a thousand guestrooms, six restaurants, six bars, and over a mile of the sugary white sand beach which has made the Mayan Riviera famous. The Barcelo Maya Tropical Beach depicts elegant Mexican style and grants full access to the four sections of the mega complex! An excellent choice for groups as it features expansive meeting facilities.

Location: On the beach, 20 min to Playa del Carmen, 50 min from the airport.

"2nd time at the tropical, the rooms, resort and beach were very clean, and with all the modern comforts. My only complaint was not enough hours in the day/night. minimal tips, a bit of patience and a friendly smile will get you everything you could ever want. The Japanese Restaurant rocked. We ate so much Lobster and Steak that I almost( almost ) got sick of it." [...]

"We stayed at the Barcelo Maya Tropical Beach from December 4-12, 2008, and it was an excellent experience. The room was spotlessly clean and maintained throughout our stay, the bed was very comfortable, the turndown service was a nice touch. The grounds are not just incredible, but more like exceptional, and easy to walk. Well-manicured, never a blade of grass out of place, they had even planted pointsettias along the walkways for Christmas. They do have a trolley that runs between all the resorts, so if you don't or can't walk to the others, you can ride. The a la carte restaurants were very, very good, the Japanese and Thai being our favourites, and the buffets were also very good, probably the best I've had at an AI yet. Always a fantastic and varied selection offered each day and each meal. Staff were very friendly, we did not have any problems with the service whatsoever.

The beach was fantastic, with soft, fine white sand. A little rocky on the Tropical and Colonial side, so if you want to walk out and swim, either wear water shoes or go over to the Maya Beach/Caribe beach and swim, much better over there. Pools were fantastic, if I were a kid I think I would have considered myself in Paradise! You have access to lit tennis courts, mini-golf, pitch-and-putt, beach volleyball, bocce, sand bowling, table tennis, and that is on top of the daily activities. They also feature a full-size soccer pitch.

I can't say enough good things about the Barcelo. I will be returning!" [...]

"I cannot say enough about this resort. I have been to the Barcelo three times, and it just keeps getting better. It is immaculate, the food is great, the staff are friendly, the nightly entertainers are very talented, and the beach/ocean is wonderful for swimming and snorkeling.

I have nothing negative to say about this resort, but do not go if you do not like walking. It is a very large resort." [...]

"I have to say that I was really excited to stay at this resort. The grounds were every bit as beautiful as the pictures you see. The buildings are beautiful. The beach is soft white sand with turquoise water. We stayed for a week with our 2 teenagers and all of us enjoyed the resort and the area. The staff were not overly friendly - especially the women - and one bartender at the pool bar (which was not overly busy) was really rude when I ordered. Weird. The housekeeping was really lacking. We had glasses left in the room from Monday to Friday (I wanted to see how long it would actually take to have them removed). Hold on to your facecloths - you will never see new ones again - I tried twice to get more, but to no avail. The fridge was to be replenished on a daily basis - it was only done when we requested it. We have stayed at Rui's before and will probably do the same again, which is too bad because this resort is really stunning. The food was okay - quite often cold on the buffets - but the speciality restaurants were good, especially the steak house. The waiter was really good there too. The shopping mall that is on premises is really good and the prices were fair compared to going into Playa del Carmen which is just alot of the same thing. " [...]

"My husband and I spent two glorious weeks at this resort. The food was exceptional with lots of variety. The only bad thing was eating too much and having a wonderful time. Our room was always clean, the fridge always restocked and the resort staff were very charming. My husband and I never felt crowded at this resort even though it was quite large. The front desk staff were always professional and we never had to wait very long for assistance. The beach and ocean were our favourite spot during our time at the Tropical. The snorkelling was fantastic and we saw lots. Turtles, so many different variety of fish and sea plants. You didn't have to do a snorkelling excursion since you had the best view right off your beach. I would go here again in a heart beat." [...]

"Very clean, hotel staff friendly, very nice beaches, buffet food a little tiring (very similar everyday) but still good and a la carte dinners fantastic. Didn't like the fact that they charged us $5 for a key card that we misplaced (which they'll find in the room somewhere anyway!) and $20 for a towel that we didn't return (again, will be found at some point). I can understand they don't want people being reckless with their towels but $20 is pretty steep. Internet was also quite expensive ($3 for 15 mins!). I don't mind paying for services but certainly do mind when taken advantage of." [...]

"My husband and I traveled to the Barcelo, with our daughters aged 11 and 8, during March break 2008. Pros - gorgeous grounds, very nice stretch of beach, buffet restaurants have a huge selection, a la carte restaurants are wonderful - try the Japanese just for the adventure, close to amenities you can walk out of the complex and catch a bus for $2.00 each to Playa del Carmen, Xel-Ha etc. or a cab for $20.00 one way, our family loved the little trains available to take you all over the resort - we would hop on them during the evening "just for fun" and ride to all the hotels located inside the complex...beach, caribe, colonial, tropical, and palace, if your return flight is leaving late in the day the Barcelo has a beautiful room where you can shower and change after you have checked out of your room and the hotel will mark and store your luggage in a locked room for you Cons - this complex is huge so be prepared for lots of walking, be careful of rock and coral in the water, the buffett food was too salty for my taste buds, although the rooms are clean they are certainly not immiculate, book the a la carte restaurants as soon as you arrive - they fill up quickly, if your interested in room service a $3.00 per plate charge applies, stock up on towels if you see the maidservice cart, and keep your eye on the daily beach towels available - if lost a $20.00 charge will be applied to your account, internet cafe charges $3.00 per 15 minutes" [...]

"We just got back from a trip at the Barcelo Maya Tropical and it was fantastic! This was to celebrate our 10 year anniversary so we went without the kids and it was very relaxing. There were many families with children but they didn't take over as they do at many other resorts. The resort is very clean, safe and a great place for couples and families. It is large so if you get bored in one area you can move over to the next. The food was good, service was good and we really enjoyed the nightly entertainment by the Barcelo cast they do a fantastic job. The best a la carte restaurants were the sea food and steak house... the asian food was not really asian and way too over seasoned but entertaining to watch them prepare. The only two minor downfalls were that the front desk never had change for small bills (tips) and the long distance was insanely expensive ($6 a minute to vancouver). We will definately go again. I would recommend this part of the hotel over the Beach/Caribe sections ... there is a noticable difference in the facilities. The snorkeling trip to Akumal is only $30 and you get to see some amazing sea life.. parasailing is way over rated and not worth the cost. If your snorkeling often buy your own snorkel gear ahead of time as the hotel gear is rarely available. Collectivo (bus) is a great way to travel as it is cheap, safe, clean, quick and prices are established. " [...]

"As a couple in our late 20's, we found this location perfect. Our expectations were exceeded in all areas - service, food, beach - the resort is immaculately maintained and all staff pay attention to detail. I was a bit concerned about the large size of the resort (in conjunction with the other 3 hotels, soon to be 4) however it was easy to find our way around and there was more than enough in terms of facilities and beach. It never felt busy. You could enjoy your own quiet place on the beach or by a pool, yet there was also opportunity to go to busier areas to meet people and socialize. I liked the open gym - there is a roof, but you are outdoors. There was plenty to do on the resort and we did not have any desire to leave for an excursion. Playa del Carmen is easily accessed and we did go there to check out the shops for one afternoon. " [...]
