Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda

The Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda is a popular 4 star all inclusive resort with a spectacular pool area but a small beach. The complex is quite large so there can be lots of walking, although there are carts to shuttle people around which really helps. The food here is excellent with lots of selection in the buffet and a great Italian a la carte. The Spa is also another wonderful feature at this resort.
What's not to like? Beautiful pool, great food, wonderful staff, beachfront resort ! We were in building 4 near the pool and beach. Our room was basic but fine for us- we spent very little time there. And we did not find it to be loud or crazy. Victor greeted us daily for breakfast in Jaal-Ha. Miceala took care of us at the beach. The Festival buffet is amazing. We also enjoyed the steakhouse and seafood restaurants. We were approached by the timeshare folks but declined without a problem. We met several guests who did the presentation and got vouchers for excursions that they enjoyed very much. The resort is large but easy to walk around. Shuttles were running all the time but we usually walked. They work overtime to keep the place clean. There are critters- interesting to watch and see. But don't feed them! Even though this place is all inclusive, we made it a point to tip a few dollars for each service. The staff is constantly helping and you should tip as you go. Don't book your excursions until you check all your options, including online. There is a travel agent in the lobby. Apple/Funjet etc also offer trips. And the scuba guys at the pool also offer non-scuba trip options. Take time to compare. The beach did have seaweed. It seemed better in the morning so we would swim before the wind picked up. Shade is hard to come by so try to get chairs early in the morning if you can. We really had a wonderful week. Thanks BBGE!
The buildings and pool are in need of a hard remodel, but the grounds of the resort are beautiful and well kept. Lots of wildlife. Not enough servers to bring drinks at big pool & beach, they came around maybe 2 to 3 times a day, and self serve only at small pool. Ocean & beach filled with seaweed, but the seating areas are kept very clean by staff. The roped off area for their ocean swimming is full of seaweed and rocks and is shallow, making it unpleasant to get in. Lots of available chairs to find shade under palms, but have to get down early to save seats under tiki huts on the beach. Smaller (quieter) pool does not have a lot of shade (it has structures, but they need repairs to offer shade). There are also obnoxious cat/raccoon like animals that are always trying to steal your food/drink at both pools. Rooms are clean and spacious, but does not cool down as much as we would have liked. The big ceiling fan helped circulate the air, and we slept comfortably. Hallways are very noisy in the morning because of the rock-like surface. Housekeeping carts are the worst. Staff is courteous and helpful. We liked the golf cart shuttle service (has designated stops for drop off/pick up) to get you from the front of the resort to the rear (where the big pool & beach are). Food at the buffet has been surprisingly good, with seafood available almost every day. I have a low carb/low sugar diet, and had no problem finding things to eat. Restaurants were very good. You can make reservations one day in advanced, and we had no problem getting the time we requested. We ate at the Seafood (my favorite - I had the scallops in coconut milk), the Steakhouse, Mexican, and Asian. We were seated right away, and the service was excellent at all of them. More restaurants are open air (no AC) than with. They have entertainment (a show) every evening at 9:30, and some were pretty good. The Black & White bar is open 24 hours, and is open air (very warm!)Nice resort and was a good value for the great deal we had, but will probably not return.
Hey everyone, let me tell you my experience of this hotel. You are going to encounter wild animals on your way to the pool!! Really nice experience for animal lovers.. The villas, depending with you stay on are ok, the air conditioner suck!! The all inclusive deal is very good, you have to make a reservation if you want to dinner in a specific type of food, there is a place where the food is buffet, and the serve the whole day different types of food. The beach site is terrible, the pool are nasty, also the beach!! If you want a nice swim, go out tho Akumal!!!
My partner and I stayed here for two weeks in may. We had the most amazing time. PLEASE DO NOT READ THE BAD REVIEWS. People seem to moan for the sake of moaning. The hotel grounds were beautiful, lots of wildlife around that were nice and friendly. The pools were fantastic and there was plenty of entertainment around the large pool throughout the day. The beach isn't great but it's still lovely to sit on. The beach bar is great. The drinks were fantastic and staff were always walking around the pool asking if we needed drinks and delivering ice creams. All the staff are lovely and friendly. The food is great, plenty of choice even for fussy eaters. The alacarte restaurants were lovely, especially the steak and sea food restaurant on the beach. The rooms are lovely, yes fairly basic but who goes to Mexixo to sit in the room. I can not praise this hotel enough.Yes if you are a moaner and miserable you will find things to moan about, such as the Wi-Fi, the heat in the lobby, the rocks in the sea, the wildlife. Oh and to just set one thing straight.... we were in building 6 which was right at the back, furthest away from the beach. It took us 7 minutes to walk to the beach. Where people are getting half an hour from and half a mile away I have no idea.Blue bay we will be back!! Thank you for having us!!
My partner and I visited Mexico for the first time and only had a short time so decided to go the all-inclusive route. We found the service, the food, the activities, and the lodgings very nice. We met some fun people our own age to hang out with. However, we sadly ended up missing a lot of the on-site activities due to one thing or another. One aspect they could have elaborated more on (or, at all) when we first arrived was the fact we could use some of the watersport equipment for free! We're avid ocean lovers and we didn't find this out until 30min before they closed that down for the day on our last afternoon there. The atmosphere of the place is quite relaxed and fun the grounds are pretty well-tended. It's also right on the beach so if you're not feeling the pool, walk on over to the ocean and frolic there. There's not a heck of a lot to walk to, but there is a river that cuts through the neighbouring hotel property that you can easily get to and it was quite fun to splash around in and swim up. The hotel was 45min south of Cancun (shuttle to/from airport was included in our trip) and 20min taxi from Playa del Carmen. Be careful of 90-minute non-timeshare timeshare presentations..they're slick at getting you signed up and not just at Grand Esmeralda. We ended up trading 90min of our time when we first got there not knowing what it was we were doing, and didn't even end up using the free spa day we got with it (damn..). We got a little wiser and did another one of these presentations at a truly 5-star hotel further down and got a wicked deal on a couple tourist attractions nearby we wanted to see so overall we had a great time, but beware ppl trying to sell you things, even at your hotel.
