Our Opinion

The Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda is a popular 4 star all inclusive resort with a spectacular pool area but a small beach. The complex is quite large so there can be lots of walking, although there are carts to shuttle people around which really helps. The food here is excellent with lots of selection in the buffet and a great Italian a la carte. The Spa is also another wonderful feature at this resort.

Overview

While this deluxe resort may be styled after an old Mayan village, it features all the modern conveniences of a world class resort. This stunning property is located on a 350-metre stretch of beach - just minutes from the charming town of Playa del Carmen and local shopping and sightseeing. Spacious rooms and suites are playfully adorned with colourful tropical details and are distributed across the property in five two-storey buildings.

Location: Beachfront, 35 minutes from airport, 35 minutes to Cancun and 10 minutes to Playa del Carmen.

Highlights
  • Large pool with sun loungers
  • Lots of restaurant offerings
  • White sand beach with water sports available
  • Full spa with luxury treatments

Do not book

I was forced here against my will after a cancelled flight. Honestly I probably would have gotten a better nights sleep in Cancun airport than this glorified prison. Beds messily made. Corridors essentially an echo chamber. How this is a four star hotel is beyond my imagination. The worst nights sleep in the worlds most uncomfortable bed.The lobby, although ‘open plan’ essentially becomes a massive oven the second it gets warm. Its cooler outside than it is inside. It’s only redeeming feature is that there is deer on the property. That’s it. Literally don’t go here. Save yourselves.

25th anniversary

Arrived at the hotel and found a lovely place. the room seemed clean, but the view leaved a lot to be desired. We paid Thomas Cook for a fourteen night stay, then added on a four day trip. When we found out our trip times, we went to reception and asked if we could stay in our room. The young lady behind the desk looked at our booking and said yes we could. went on our trip around the jungle having a great time. came back to the hotel, to find we are now being charged for the time we were NOT in the room, having paid for it once we had to pay or would not have been allowed to get our things from the room. One morning, one holiday maker found glass in the pool, his wife nearly trod on it. He took it to reception to complain. Their attitude, things happen ? Over the next two days four people had cuts to the feet and hands. The pool wasn't checked for glass by any staff. The pools have many tiles missing and sharp edges.Oh yes the clean room. We had a late night only to find the floor alive with ants. We had thought hey were coming from the pool area, as they were in our pool bag, but they were in the room, and getting in the bag at night. Having said this the food was great and the waiters and bar staff were excellent.

Would highly recommend

Just when I thought I’d lost faith in all-inclusive hotels, BlueBay changed my opinion. The hotel was amazing and the staff were very helpful, we felt as though nothing was too much hassle and they did things that weren’t needed. Nothing major but little things like screening boxing on the projector and laying out snacks for everyone watching. On Mexican Independence Day they put on so many activities, extra food and a beach party. The food was amazing in all the restaurants, the buffet was as you’d expect but we ate a la Carter most nights. In my opinion, I would rate them as followsFrenchOrientalMexicanSteakhouseItalianSeafoodThe French and Oriental share a building on alternate nights, and it’s really nicely laid out there. It’s really popular so book as far in advance as possible. The Mexican food was sensational, only behind the other two as I didn’t think it was decorated as nicely as the other building. The steakhouse was good but really warm in there, I think they may have moved it the day we left. There was nothing wrong with the Italian or Seafood, I just preferred the others. We mainly had breakfast in the poolside restaurant and our waiter, Fernando was very welcoming and attentive. Every day we were welcomed with a smile and received great service.A little tip goes a long way to the staff. The waiters look after you and in the Black and White bar you’ll get table service from the friendly staff. Get to the pool early for the better sunbeds as it gets busy, if you want shade then you have to be quick as they get taken pretty quick. The beach isn’t the best, there’s a lot of seaweed but they do make an effort to clean it up as much as possible everyday. If you walk to the beach and turn left, there’s a small lagoon that you can swim in which was really nice and refreshing. The nature is amazing, on our first morning we had a spider monkey visit our balcony, was a welcomed surprise. There’s a family of deer that come to the hotel and allow you to get close for pictures, could often be seen around buildings 6, 7 and 8 mainly at night or first thing. The coati’s are adorable, but beware, they will approach you for food and try to check your bag or knock over your drink to have some for itself. They seemed to be very fond of coke. The room was nice and the air conditioning was very good to have. There’s a safe that’s free to use where you set your own passcode and there’s a fridge that’s replenished everyday. If the water isn’t enough for you (two big bottles), leave a note and ask for extra. The WiFi is below average, even the high speed that you can purchase day tickets. We were in building 7 and couldn’t access it in our room. It works fine closer to reception and in Black and white. The animacion team was really good too, they clearly love their jobs and try to involve everyone. For excursions there’s a hut by the big pool that are very helpful and reasonably priced. Not the cheapest but reliable and the guides are great. Eduardo was particularly good when we went to Tulum and Chikin Ha.Would definitely visit BlueBay’s hotels again, and we’re considering going back for our honeymoon.

Great vacations!

We just came back a few days ago from this hotel. We had a great 1 week stay. I have to say that there's a few things to be improved, but they were not deal breakers for us. To our opinion, we wouldn't rate the hotel a 4,5* yet because of the improvements needed. We would return. Firstly, the service was very good. We would like to specially thank Rosy, Viktor, Samantha and Augustin for their wonderful customer service. Our trip wouldn't have been the same without Augustin's service at the breakfast and lunch buffet. The food at the buffets was good! A lot of choices. The only disappointment were the desserts!! Big lack of flavour there. Two pools on the resort. The cool thing is that the pools have shallow parts. So our almost 2 years old could play in that part while I was in front of her in the deeper side. Really liked that.We went to the steak house, the seafood, the mexican and the oriental à la carte. The steak house was the best to our taste. Seafood and mexican good. Disappointed by the Oriental (shrimp satay really good though). We really liked the parade night. Very fun!!!Improvements: - Felt like the pools were missing chlorine.- Soundproofing in the bedrooms.- We would have really liked to see the music band play in the evening at Black and white bar before and after the show. It would add a nice ambiance and vibe to the place.Beware: -If you are searching for a resort with a big and long beach, this is not the hotel for you. - Rooms are not well soundproof. If you get awakened easily, you will most likely get wakened up. You can hear everything they do in the other room. In the morning, you can hear all the phones ringing for the wakeup calls.-Also, this resort is big. If you don't like walking, not the hotel for you either (We didn't mind the walking. We did noticed a lot of golf carts circulating. Easy to hop in and out. We never waited for one, so can't tell if waiting is long).-Big resort = a lot of mangrove = mosquitoes.

Black water beach area and rooms needs renovation

The Blue Bay Esmeralda is located in an area with black water not the clear blue white sand beach. Check before booking in this part of Cancun, as only a mile away you may be able to find the clear blue waters on the beach. The hotel it self is dated and needs to be renovated. If you only want hot weather by the swimming pool with lots and lots of drinking included...it is a long way to go! All the staff were excellent and always ready to top up the drinks. All hotels along the road are a long way from the main road before you get to the reception area and rooms, so can't get local buses and forced to use taxis organised by the hotels or excursions...bit expensive. If in the town organise your Taxi for collection, it will work out cheaper.
