Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda

The Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda is a popular 4 star all inclusive resort with a spectacular pool area but a small beach. The complex is quite large so there can be lots of walking, although there are carts to shuttle people around which really helps. The food here is excellent with lots of selection in the buffet and a great Italian a la carte. The Spa is also another wonderful feature at this resort.
Just got back from a week at BlueBay Grand Esmeralda. I went with a friend for a relaxing girls trip. Food was incredible at both buffets and the a la carte restaurants. Seafood was our favourite and went twice. Valentine's Day was a special and they added a lobster tail. The best ambiance was the French and Italian. The resort is HUGE. If you have mobility issues or small children it would be a challenge. There were a few minor issues but the good outweighed the bad. Door keys were not working at times. We spent an hour outside our room while security tried to use some machine to reprogram our key to no avail. Our neighbour rescued us with beers and a room to relax until they opened the door. I had all the time in the world so we simply laughed it off. Next night we locked ourselves out on the balcony as our door did not have a sign indicating it locks automatically. So I rustled through the straw privacy divider and asked my neighbours for help. We all had a good laugh and security did too. They told us we keep doing stuff to get them back to say hi. Again, laid back on vacation and funny stuff makes the trip. We were in building #1 and it was close to the main pool and beach. We were on top floor so was not noisy with carts etc that some complained about. The beach party could be heard but didn't stop me from sleeping. Beds were great. Bathroom shower was a little awkward. I am short so the 2 and a half foot climb into it was challenging. If you have mobility issues or children request a room with walk in shower.Swing bar was always interesting and met new people every night. Beach party was usually younger set but one night the oldies (over 35) showed up and busted a move and was a great time. The Black and White bar was meh. I felt like I was sitting at a table at the Legion. Shows looked uninteresting so after dinner we sat with new friends at the bar outside the french/italian restaurants. They served top shelf alcohol in glass and the atmosphere was lovely. Our last night there was a wedding reception in that area. Now matter where we went the staff were very attentive. At no time did I experience anyone rude or negative. Ruperta was always glad to see us in the morning and came out to greet us if we were in line and got our table ready. We stayed at the main pool most days. Getting a place with shade after 830am was like winning the lottery. A designated smoking area would be nice around beach/pool area because it was a major letdown to finally sit down and realize your neighbour is a chainsmoker. Beach area was nice and the employees were out until 11pm at night working on the beach and pool area. The grounds were very well kept as well as the private pools. Daily walks along the beachfront to the right of the resort were great and we got to see other resort areas and the beach areas. All resorts have limited beach area and similar seaweed problems along that stretch. Actually, BBGE has the best beach I thought. Some ocean days were better than others due to wind etc. To the left of the beach is a fabulous lagoon area. Simply breathtaking. Lots of activities near the pool with a fun staff of people doing activities like water aerobics, dancing, water polo etc. Ping pong tables nearby. There is a bbq station and bar near the beach that was convenient and food was good. We took the resort bus for $5 into Playa del Carmen for the day. It was a nice break from the pool/music/drink/food overload. We ate at a restaurant by the ocean. We bought overpriced chips, guacamole and Pico de gallo. We got served a massive bowl of Guacamole with 3 chips in it. Had to use our best spanish to get more chips and pico to go with the 2 lbs of guac. Obviously a language barrier. Another wtf we are on vacation funny moment. Beach was busy but we managed to sit for a bit and enjoy the water. Tourism area in the shopping centres had familiar stores and if you ignore the calls for your money and business it will be stress free. Just buy yourself some $1 Corona at the trinket shops (don't forget bottle opener) and enjoy the day. I have travelled to high end resorts but paid five times the amount. Honestly the food here was comparable, if not better than high end resorts. I simply went for sun, good food and a relaxing week and got it.
Helpful concierge: Carlos & Daniela Great servers & captain Jeramus, Ernesto, Jacobo, Lizbeth Santiago & Gilberto. For an all inclusive, we were pleasantly surprised by the good food. Overall it's a clean place. Fun dinner show, plus entertainment each night. Pool & beach activities were fun to join & watch. Liked that they'd teach salsa / Zumba by the pool & out at the Black & White bar. We got a kick out of the numerous Coatimundi running around the property we also saw raccoon , deer & iguanas ;)
Large attractive property. This resort is situated on a very large natural property. Lot of woods and wildlife. Also a lot of walking. Shuttle is available if you want to wait. Our building was about 500 yards to the front lobby and shopping / restaurant locations. Beautiful walk through well landscaped walking trails. The buildings with the hotel rooms are better than average. Clean, comfortable rooms, great privacy and really not much to complaint about. The only issue is always with other inconsiderate guests. Guests whom party late into the night, then come home, making unnecessary noise, slamming doors 2 am I the morning. This is of course no fault of the resort, just the ignorant guests. All the restaurants on site are excellent. If you have a small appetite, try the French fine dining. Great food, but ever tiny portions. No worries there is always the buffet if you still hungry. 2 large buffet restaurants, both excellent. The Mexican fine dining restaurant is a must.Beach is typical of the Mayan Rivera. Great beach but as you enter the water, there are rocks. On a calm day you can see the bottom, and avoid the rocks, but on a windy day you better wear something on your feet.Over all really good place, no complaints, great staff ( as that usually the case in most Mexican resorts)Good food. Location is convenient as it is not far from Pala del Carmen, or the airport.
Rooms are clean, bed is comfortable and food is good, everyone is very friendly. Ruperto in the buffet by the beach is wonderful. She waited on us almost every day, always with a smile and always remembered what we liked. Juan at the VIP bar is awesome, we called him Juan Cruise for the little bar shows he would do for us daily.
Everything is as as described. The staff is excellent. the place is clean. The food is varied and tasty. The atmosphere is full of life with many activities during the day and in the evenings. I highly recommend it.
