Our Opinion

The Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda is a popular 4 star all inclusive resort with a spectacular pool area but a small beach. The complex is quite large so there can be lots of walking, although there are carts to shuttle people around which really helps. The food here is excellent with lots of selection in the buffet and a great Italian a la carte. The Spa is also another wonderful feature at this resort.

Amazing Resort and Staff

I am sincerely glad that we did not listen to any of the negative reviews. We stayed at the Blue Bay January 10 - 20. The hotel was beautiful, and yes it is large but if you do not like to walk or you have limitations you may wait for the train at multiple locations around the resort. We enjoyed the beautiful walks through the resort, seeing all the amazing local animals and gardens. The staff were great! Augustine and all of the waiters give exceptional service always going above and beyond. (Big shout out to Augustine!) The front desk staff were friendly and accommodating, we had a leaking air conditioner and they promptly upgraded us to another amazing room. Thank you to all the amazing people that work at the Blue Bay, we will for sure be returning for vacation.

Fantastic time

For those that write negative reviews, I wonder what resort they stayed at. We just spend a week at BlueBay and could not have had a better time. The food was wonderful (especially the filet mignon at the steak house)Don't expect the Ritz you are not paying for the Ritz. For the price there are few if any any better. The staff are amazing, friendly, helpful, and eager to please. I requested bldg 5 by email. Not only did I get the building I requested, I got a ocean view. with wine and chanpagne They are fighting erosion from hurricanes. its a never ending battle for them. they are doing an admirable job of fighting mother nature. This was our second visit there, and I won't hesitate to go again. We love this resort and the people there.

Excellent!

We had an excellent time here. I was skeptical due to the poor reviews but you get what you pay for! The rooms were not cleaned as well as they should have been. When we first got to the room, our air conditioner was leaking everywhere but they came and fixed it right away. Rooms kind of smelled like mould but to be honest, this was so minor compared to everything else. The food was great. Same thing everyday basically but it there were lots to choose from. The staff are amazing. They treat you great, and will do anything that you need. There is no night life/club here. So if you want to party, you'll have to go to playa del carmen. To get around the resort, you have to take a cart. Option is to walk, but you get tired fast lol. Beach is dirty and full of seaweed, but that can be expected at times of the year. A - la - cartes are unlimited. The steak house was the best! The pool was great, drinks were great. There were alot of coatis around that like to steal peoples food and drinks so don't leave them laying around. ONE thing I found to be absolutely so annoying is the staff that ask you for a "90 minute presentation" for breakfast. They claim it is not for time shares but I've been to mexico long enough to know it definitely is. Its a waste of time. They claim to give you a free $150 spending on the resort to attend the breakfast, with no obligation, but we all know nothing is free! No matter how many times I told them I didn't want to do it, they wouldnt leave me alone, so I just avoided the lobby altogether so I didn't have to repeat myself to Jose!

Sea weed bay resort

Booked last minute tbh!I love the Sea and beach! Unfortunately for this resort they have a sea weed problem. They had workers clearing it up prior to New Years. There are comfy chill out areas, there's no we're nice to spread out and chill.Black and white bar is a cheap bar you'd find in a Magaluf We got a local bus most evening from the out side of the hotel playa del Carmen for 50 pesco each. Taxis are a rip off hereExcursions are amazing , look into them and book them. Our room was fine and spacious Drinks and alcohol weren't great, cocktails were a waste of timeI checked out early and went to tulum, Tulum is amazing but expensive but worth every penny. Hotel los cabanas beside ziggy beach.

A great vacation! (Long read)

We visited the Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda during the week of March 13-18. I creeped out Trip Advisor because I like to know what to expect when travelling, or at least get a feel for the place.Out of all the complaints from the negative reviews, I did not see proof positive of any of those complaints. We travelled in a group of 10, but booked separately, so I sent an email to the hotel to request that we be in the same building. The resort put us in side by side rooms, on the ground floor, which worked out perfectly.Check in was quick, we arrived mid afternoon when it wasn't too busy. The only delay we had was current guests budding in the line. A trend we saw all week, for everything. Our rooms were ready, the resort provided us with a trolley to take us and our luggage to the rooms, so we got unpacked and settled really quickly and we were able to enjoy some pool time. If you time your arrival for after 1pm, it is pretty much guaranteed your room will be ready. We stayed in building 4, which was close to the main pool, beach, and breakfast/lunch buffet, and kids club. The only downside of that is we had to trolley/walk up to the main buffet for dinner, or the Mexican, Italian, and French a la cartes. Not a bad walk at all, like seriously less than ten minutes. We had grandparents with us, so if we all got a trolley together, great, if there wasn't enough room, we would let them ride and we would walk. Note the trolleys stop running at 11pm! So be prepared to walk back! The resort is very clean. The food was very good. We tried the steakhouse, the Italian and the Mexican a la carte. The Mexican was amazing. Italian was unbelievable. Steakhouse was also good. All the a la carte restaurants we went to had a kids menu as well. There are tons of loungers on the beach and tons around the main pool, but not many shady spots. We needed some shade for the kids and for the grandparents, so we would get up early to get the chairs we wanted, eat breakfast and be back at the chairs early. And even then, it wasn't too busy. It would get very busy around 11am and stay busy for the remainder of the day. The beach had more palapas to use, and the beach itself is beautiful, and the ocean is warm, but getting in and out of the water was hard to navigate because there are rocks that you can't see when it is wavy. But the sand is perfect for kids to play in. We saw the kids in the kids club walking around, so I spoke to the girls running it and did a mental count of the ratio of adults to kids, and depending on the day, it was 3:1 or 4:1. My kids were interested in checking it out so I took them, and man is it impressive. All shady, but with a baby pool and a kiddy pool that was about 3 feet deep. Each kid gets a cubby so you leave them with shirts, hats, sunscreen and floaties, whatever, and they are well taken care of. They eat lunch together, they swim, they have movie time and craft time, there was balloons and face painting, and if the kids get fussy, the leaders will bring them out to you, or you can leave your phone number and they will call. My kids really liked it, and the staff was unbelievably patient, kind, and organized. The social team was amazing. They start at 9 am, go till 5 pm; then have a break and have to be back for the evening show. They have activities at the main pool all day. There was a beach party, they did water polo, aqua aerobics, silly games, dancing, and always with a smile on their faces. THEY DESERVE TO BE PAID MORE.The evening shows were ok. Not many people attended, but I totally give this crew an A for effort. It really is a big resort, and lots of wildlife to spot. We saw deer, coatis, raccoons, iguanas, and birds all over the place. People were feeding the coatis and raccoons, even though there are signs not to. That was annoying, because then they approach anyone they see, and they do have teeth and they are wild animals! One thing I noticed was at every line, including buffet, trolley, check-in, you name it, there was always someone cutting in front of you. It got really annoying really fast. Yes you can hear people in the hallways, and housekeeping always came around starting at 8 am, but they have a whole building to clean, so yeah, it can happen! If you don't want to be disturbed then put the sign out. Very simple solution. As for other drunk guests....they are everywhere, at any resort you go to. They'll pass out eventually. Just take solace in the fact that when they wake up and hunt for a chair the next day, there probably won't be one. ;)We had a wonderful time at this resort, I highly recommend it!!
