Our Opinion

The Catalonia Playa Maroma is a very good 3.5 star resort, some would even say 4 star resort. An expansive, white sand beach is the highlight of this resort and exactly what you would expect from a top Riviera Maya beach. The rooms are decent and the food is fine, but the real treat here is the beach. A definite recommendation.

Great Place!

Very relaxing, great food, it was very clean, very nice staff, and I was very comfortable, the weather was great 24 hour bar was very nice. I would definitely go back there if I had the chance, it was very laid back, shows every night and the beach was amazing! I give it a two thumbs up great family place to go, wish I could live like that everyday :)

Must like it

After visiting a lot of resorts in Cancun area, this is one of my favorites. I say this because this June will be our 3rd time back. Very beautiful resort without any problems to speak of. Really nice pool area with a great beach! Excellent staff that keep things rolling. Birthday was in September, so I got little extra attention by waiters bringing me a sombrero & a shot of tequila 😀 so we're looking forward to June, my son & daughter in law, 2 granddaughters & her mother will make their 1st trip to Caribbean.

Beautiful resort & beach

CATALONIA PLAYA MAROMATravelled Jan. 29 to Feb. 12Place was recommended by travel agent at Transat Holidays. Excellent choice. WiFi good reception everywhere… not on beachHere are my observations:Room: very spacious, super clean, mini fridge well stocked with water & soft drinks. Toiletries were replaced when finished. Maids did a wonderful jobturn down service most nights with 2 chocolates left on bedBeach towels were in room when we arrived. We were in building 2 or (B) in the section that has 3 floors(privileged--but not for restaurant & beach area) If we wanted full privilege, the cost was $140.00US per personFood: Hot & cold— multiple choices of veggies, pastas, fish, meats, breads, pizzas, salads, cheeses, fresh fruits, deserts, some were repeats but overall no complaints, everything was very tasty.some days, there was also a section with Mexican food in the morning & at lunchDrinks: house wine was not always drinkable, so we stuck with water—- Pinā Coladas at beach bar were amazing… very different from the other resorts we went to in Cuba & Mexico.Beach: comfortable lounging chairs, great wide beach good for long walks, whitish sand, water great, but lots of algae in the mornings that was being picked up & buried in sand.Probably because we were too early in the season, there were lots of free chairs on beach even in the afternoon in the first week… second week was a little more busy with tourists from Europe arriving.Pool: cannot really comments on this since we spent our time at the beach, but it was busy with families with young children.A la carte restaurants:We were allowed 8 visits to them, but only went once to the following:Toscana: service was good, choices in menu okTortuga(steakhouse): service was good, menu ok but the T-bone steaks were a bit chewy (beef at buffet was more tender)Buffet (Pajarito): we took the rest of our meals here.We chose to always sit towards the back section on the right hand side. For breakfast: more often than not coffee cups were not on tables in this section but at the other sections tables were well set up for breakfast… here waiters were more busy folding napkins than coming over to ask if we wanted coffee or tea. There was a coffee urn & insulated pots of hot water & milk at the beginning of the buffet, so we got our own drinks.Sometimes we barely had time to put down our utensils that waiter would come and take away our plates, other times, we had to accumulate our plates on the side of table.Overall, experience at buffet was very good.Lobby:the coffee was very good…cappuccino, espresso & good variety of teas… other people were having drinks.in the evening, we found that unlike the other resorts we visited where the guests would gather after dinner & mingle, this one lacked ‘atmosphere’…. by that I mean there were very few guests in lobby after dinner (we usually finished eating at around 7-7:30pm)— maybe because the majority were European and they eat very late… most nights there was no entertainment before the 9:30 shows… we only saw a violinist & a sax player the second week. Also, there were no TV screens where you could sit & watch sports or news instead of going back to your roomLong walkway from lobby to beach… apparently it’s 400 meters long…but it’s good exercise…there are the little beasties(Coati) that roam the mini-jungle & walkway… always looking for food but they are harmless Vendors: every second night about half-dozen vendors would set up their tables on the walkway near the lobby.... jewelry, pottery, t-shirts, hats, paintings...In the evening, lighting is poor in walkway and paths leading to buildings… especially building B where one of the paths is twisting, long & uneven.TV: of course, lots of Spanish speaking channels… there were quite a few American channels, Italian channel Rai, a French & German Channel, but no Canadian channel… it would have been nice to have either an English or French speaking News channel since there are quite a few guests from Quebec & other parts of Canada.Overall, we were very satisfied with resort, service and would come back.

Beautiful beach a bit quiet, people very nice

It a cute little resort with a beautiful beach and very clear water. The food we found was very salty and repetitive. At the time we wanted a quiet resort but we found it to quiet for us. It good for family and older people.

great beach! good food!

a nice resort but not for us! this was our 1st time at this resort. we usually stay at adult only all inclusives. this one is family-friendly. pros: the beach is excellent! the beach had plenty of chairs under the palms and was sooo amazing. great for long walks! the food was consistently really good! the grounds are gorgeous & well maintained. the staff are so nice & very accommodating. our room was pretty nice but little things didnt work right (such as the sink wasnt draining properly, toilet ran, blow dryer wasnt hot.) but that was just minor in the grand scheme. the juice bar made great smoothies. the desserts were always so good too! cons: the pool. it wasnt what i would call luxurious and the pool water always looked cloudy. my biggest complaint of this resort is that the pool was completely dominated by little children. naked toddlers in the pool, kids in diapers in the pool, and pre k kids were everywhere so it made it feel completely like a public swimming pool, not a private resort pool. no real usable pool space for a couple of adults without running into all the kids (we went in february). the pool is large and it is large enough that this resort could have sectioned off part of it for adults only, easily.the only other real complaint was that this all inclusive only allows you to eat at their non-buffet restaurants 4x, all of the rest of your meals are to be eaten at the buffets. ive never been to a resort that limits you this way. it worked out for us but it was a surprise i wasnt expecting.it was a great stay despite the pool/kids issues. we felt safe, secure, and treated well during our 6 night stay.
