Our Opinion

The Catalonia Playa Maroma is a very good 3.5 star resort, some would even say 4 star resort. An expansive, white sand beach is the highlight of this resort and exactly what you would expect from a top Riviera Maya beach. The rooms are decent and the food is fine, but the real treat here is the beach. A definite recommendation.

Amazing beach

We had 1 of the only 3 rooms on the whole complex that had a private pool on the balcony I. Building 6.Without that room I would give a 3 star. Food was OK and service was OK. The main building is so far from the beach there should be a shuttle. Still the price is worth it for that beach.

Birthday Celebration

Disappointing, inconsistent , broken air conditioner, pillows and beds uncomfortable and old, horrible manicure, food just okay some times, mosquitoes and heat ruin your dining experience at the buffet. Walk too long to get to the lobby.

The Long walks

food was average and a long walk to get it, and you have to eat in the heat, no ac in common areaslot of animals running around, signs say don't feed, but a lot of kids around and they be feeding them, overall average.

An Exclusive Traveler Club (ETC) vacation for the Memory Books - Catalonia Playa Maroma!

We have gone to a few different resorts in Mexico and we absolutely love the Catalonia resorts. December 2016 was our first visit to Catalonia Playa Maroma. Hubby and I went for my 45th birthday and my mom and dad joined us. We had been to a few all inclusive resorts but this was my parent’s second All inclusive vacation. Before we even arrived, any questions we had about our booking were answered quickly and very informative! This level of service continued once we arrived at the resort. Upon arriving we were greeted by the ETC concierge, they made sure we were well taken care of and off we went to the Tequila bar while they completed the check in for us. Seamless and very friendly check-in, before you knew it we were being shown to our rooms after an introduction to the rest of the ETC team. The Room: Both of our rooms were located in the 6100 Block by the Pool and easy access to the beach. Loved the location of where our rooms were for access to bar, pool, restaurants and the beach. They were clean, well stocked and had everything you needed to enjoy the stay. We had an issue with the safe, but a quick call and maintenance came and corrected it very quickly. The Restaurants:El Pajaorito - This restaurant was a good walk through the jungle to the buffet from our room. That was one of the downsides was the walk. There were days it was hard to choose where to go and eat as there were many choices and sometimes that walk played a part in the choice. The food themes were rotated on a regular basis so you did not tire as much of the options to choose from. I loved the fresh fruit juices available for all meals at the buffet. Being ETC members, we had priority seating, so did not have to wait in some of the long lineups that occurred to get into the buffet. Tortuga Salad Bar – A lot of people complain that the pizza or other foods are not good. The pizza is not what you get at home and at times it was cold from sitting. We found things we enjoyed and yes some things we did not. Par for the course at a buffet. The grill at night was a good place to eat. If you expect the size of steak you get at home, you will be disappointed. The steaks are thin and on the smaller side but the food tasted great and like the other restaurants, the service was very good. With the appy, main entrée and desert, you never leave hungry.Terrace Tapas Lounge – This was one of our favorite restaurants and not as busy as the others as only open to privileged or ETC guests. The staff, the food, the atmosphere. Absolutely loved it. The staff is very attentive, quick with refills, answering questions and love to have a good time with their customers. After the first couple of meals, they get to know your likes, dislikes and aim to please. This was one of the big reasons why we loved to return for breakfast, lunch or supper, the service was excellent. We enjoyed Tapas twice at this restaurant and it did not disappoint! They also cater for the lobster romantic dinner on the beach which we enjoyed immensely.Tio Pedro – We went to this restaurant the first night. Mexican food was good but not as good as the other choices available at the resort. We did not return to the Mexican just because we found other places we enjoyed more. The margaritas were blended goodness!Toscana- this is where we were introduced to the “cheese” buns. Bite size buns filled with a creamy cheese that OMG you wanted to ensure you always had extra. (probably had something to do with the lbs we all gained at this resort) Loved the wine, the pasta and the service. The Pools: They offer a little bit for everyone. There are organized games throughout the day, a foam party on one of the days during the week, and most days we could find seating when we wanted it. But with being an ETC member we could reserve the pool beds to ensure we always had a place by the pool. The pools were clean, inviting and a good temperature for a cool down. The pools were pretty busy through the day and also a lot of kids – sometimes this was a downside to enjoying a relaxing afternoon by the pool. The Bars:My favorites were the Tequila bar and the Palapa Bar. My favorite drink while I was there was the Mexican Mudslide: Tequila, baileys, Kahlua, coconut milk, ice - blended goodness – YES pool side or beach side. You must try one when there. Perfect drink any time of day. The Ma Loo Bar was great to go to when you wanted something to cool you down with no alcohol. Quite a few different choices and was a place we visited each day. The Beach:From our hotel room, it was a short walk to the ETC beach side. So quiet, beds or beach chairs and drinks brought right to you. The Playa Maroma beach is unlike any beach we have seen. It was like walking in talcum powder. There has been a lot of problems with seaweed at the resorts but all resorts face the same problem. The staff here work hard each and every day getting it cleaned up. Despite their efforts, it seemed to still accumulate at times and many guests did not like it. Beautiful beach to play in the waves, soak up some rays or even have a siesta. The beach for privileged or other guests were a lot busier. Lots of beach chairs and shades to be found. Other guests did complain about the walk from their room to the beach as most of the rooms were placed in between the lobby and the pool. The beach is a big reason people come to this resort and it does not disappoint. The Service: No matter where we were at the resort the staff were all friendly. They would greet you on the paths, ask how you were and if anything was needed. I can’t say enough about the staff at this resort. You can tell they are treated well by how they do their job and interact with the customers. They are smiling and laughing and seem to enjoy interacting with the customers. The housekeepers were great at their job, went the extra mile with their towel designs and loved what they stocked our fridge with! We had a few favorite staff by the end of the 14 days. They helped make the vacation that it was!The Entertainment: We enjoyed a few nights of the entertainment at the hotel including Lion King, the aqua circus, Mariachi band and the Divas. The staff work hard to ensure the guests are entertained. They like to get you involved and enjoying the shows. This is Mexican entertainment, it is not what we would see for shows in other places. But it was still entertaining and good for a few laughs. The Rauxa Show at Catalonia Royal Tulum was completely different. If you can arrange to go to this show at the Catalonia resort in Tulum while you are here, make sure you do. Playa Maroma will help arrange the transportation and tickets to the other resort so you can see the show. The show is for couples and the admission includes your drinks, a 5 course meal and an amazing show. I would put this show right up there with ones we have seen in Canada or the US. I highly recommend seeing this show if you can! Thanks to the staff at Playa Maroma, they arranged everything for us, we just had to show up at the front to head to the resort. It was a very entertaining night for a couple. Make sure you are hungry when you go, as the food is plentiful and divine. Transportation:Getting transportation from the resort to other places was not a problem at all. The taxis are lined up outside of the resort and the bellboys will call one for you. Takes a few minutes for them to arrive. We had a couple of different taxi’s until we found, Lalo. We enjoyed how he interacted with us and you could tell he worked hard at learning English and truly wanted to ensure your trip was one you would enjoy. By the end of our vacation we also knew more Spanish as he was great teacher as well! Highly recommend Lalo with Taxi 1793! He was able to show us many different places in the area we had not seen before on our other trips. For us it does not matter if you are privileged, ETC or a regular guest. This resort has a lot to offer for each type of guest. You can not go wrong with the food, the service and the facilities that make this a great vacation spot. If there is a problem or an issue, speak to the staff. They are always quick at addressing the issue and making sure you are satisfied. The couple times we had issues, they were right there to ensure we were taken care of. I know we will return to this and other Catalonia resorts!

It was okay

The hotel its self was nice. The beach was nice, the food was good. Everything was fine. My trip there wasnt about me, my friends were getting married and as long as they enjoyed themselves thats all that matters.
