Our Opinion

The Catalonia Playa Maroma is a very good 3.5 star resort, some would even say 4 star resort. An expansive, white sand beach is the highlight of this resort and exactly what you would expect from a top Riviera Maya beach. The rooms are decent and the food is fine, but the real treat here is the beach. A definite recommendation.

tripadvisor Traveler Reviews
  • Dana B :
Very Average Resort

Ok, I hate to be a Debbie-Downer but this resort is overrated. There are some absolutely wonderful aspects, but the reviews make it sound incredible. I am NOT going to do that and will instead be very honest about the good and bad aspects. My husband and I traveled from 3/22-3/26 and we upgraded to the privileged room/package. Overall this resort is nice, but overall very average. It is a great VALUE for your money, that's for sure, and is a great option for travelers on a budget! The GOOD:BEACH - the beach is absolutely beautiful. The sand is soft and white, water crystal blue and clear, no rocks or coral, water not too rough... heaven. We never had a problem finding chairs on the beach, it got crowded but not overwhelmingly. There was usually a nice breeze, the only negative was there was quite a bit of seaweed when we were there, but the staff worked very hard to clear it as much as possible.STAFF/SERVICE - really outstanding. Everyone was super friendly and helpful, always smiling and attentive. The entertainment staff was great, though they seemed to spend all of their time at the pool during the day so we didn't see them all too often (we chose to spend our time at the beach, I'll get into that). We attended one show while we were there, we didn't have any expectations really but I have to say they blew us away. Its clear they put a lot of effort into their shows and the choreography They are a talented crew. FOOD - Really, really good for an all inclusive! They had a huge selection at the buffet, some really authentic and delicious Mexican dishes, mixed with some American, European and traditional buffet food. I agree with another reviewer though, make the trip to the buffet near the lobby... the one by the pool/beach had a very limited selection, not so good. We ate at the buffet two nights and at the Terrace tapas restaurant another night. The tapas were really yummy, I have to say, really exceeded my expectation. We really loved most of the items aside from the octopus which was incredibly fishy and chewy. The only exception to the outstanding service and food was a female employee working the omelet station on Friday morning. She was really miserable - did not crack a smile or even speak one word to any of the guests. I asked her to make my omelet with egg whites and she gave me a death stare, no response at all. She ended up giving me egg whites but left a huge piece of shell in there. She also did not cook the eggs very well. Everyone at the omelet station had to ask her to leave their omelets on for longer than she wanted, she was trying to give everyone raw eggs. My husband couldn't even eat his after having her leave it on for a bit longer, and that man will eat ANYTHING. We had the crepes one afternoon which were yummy and enjoyed fresh juices from the juice bar. We ate at the terrace restaurant overlooking the beach for breakfast a couple of mornings and the views, service and food was really delicious! THE OKROOM - as I mentioned, we upgraded to privileged. The room was nice, but not that nice. Spacious. Pretty clean, aside from the floor which it seems they never cleaned. We stayed in building 6, perfect location very close to the beach, but there was construction going on (they are adding a 3rd floor) so one of the pathways was closed (the one that brings you to the pool) and they did loud work all day and well into the evening hours. Also, we were on the first floor and our patio was out in the middle of the courtyard. We never used it and always had to keep our curtains closed because people are constantly walking through. No real privacy. The maid service was great, always refreshed our mini bar (which is btw just water soda and beer) provided fresh towels and toiletries. The AC was also really great. It actually got a little too cold for us the first night, and I usually blast my AC, so it works wonderfully. THE GROUNDS - all and all its very tranquil and they add little touches here and there with their signs about love and peace which is really cute. The wildlife is nice too, we personally thought that coatis are adorable and they are very friendly. This resort is showing its age a bit though with very worn down walkways and older looking finishes. But overall, clean and nice. The walk from privileged rooms to the main area with lobby buffet shows and bar is VERY long, but not too much of a bother to us as we like to walk. THE BARS - ok so the actual liquor selection is great and they have some higher end brands than you would traditionally find at an all inclusive. There are only two bars in the whole resort, the lobby bar and the one by the pool (which is only open during the day) so if you want a drink at night (aside from with dinner) you will have to make the trek to the lobby. The bartenders were great, their drinks were pretty inventive and included fresh ingredients, and you surprisingly never had to wait too long even with there only being one bar open at night and only one for the pool/beach during the day. When I first learned there was no swim up bar I was really disappointed, but that didn't turn out to be much of an issue anyway as we chose not to spend much time in the pool (see not so good section). WIFI - it's free and works great by the lobby but was extremely spotty and would not work at all several times throughout our trip. Didn't bother me so much because hey I was on vacation but should be noted in case that's important to you. THE NOT SO GOOD:THE POOL - seriously? is this a joke?? why are there not more reviews on the terrible condition of the pool? I'm VERY confused by this. The only people ever in the pool were parents with young kids. I mean the beach is amazing I understand, but sometimes you just want to chill in the pool and not worry about avoiding big waves and staying afloat. Not possible for us on this trip because the pool is really not somewhere you want to be. The paint on the concrete and sides of the pool is all worn away, which makes it look shabby and old. There's algae on the sides of the pool, no swim up bar, it was not very clean. Just ew. We spent all out time at the beach, as did 90% of the guests on the days we were there. NO RESERVATIONS FOR A LA CARTE -We tried to dine at the steakhouse one of the nights we were there, but the wait was 40 minutes. We then went to the other two a la carte restaurants only to find that the wait at those restaurants was just as long. There's really not much to do while you wait to be seated because the restaurants are by the pool and far way from the lobby. If you wanted to sit and have a drink while you waited you would have to walk all the way to the lobby to do so. We're not really into waiting around to eat while on vacation either. At first we liked the idea of not having to worry about a reservation, but we would have much preferred being seated in a timely fashion. We ended up just going to the buffet. THE GUESTS - not to be held against the resort, but there were mostly europeans at this resort. barely anyone spoke english and most people were incredibly unfriendly. Usually on vacation we meet many people and make new friends, was not happening here no one wanted to be bothered and it was RARE to even find anyone speaking our language.

Best vacation of 2017

This was my first trip to Riviera Maya and this hotel. I had never heard of the Catalonia resorts but after reading all the positive comments, my family and I decided to book. As soon as we arrived at the hotel, we were greeting warmly by the reception staff. Very polite and curtious. Their english was impeccable. All the staff at this resort has a smile and they can hello to you 10 times a day. The grounds are clean, the room service is by far the best I have seen. Changing your towels twice a day .....I have never seen that. They turn down your bed every night. The entertainment staff is the best. These young people speak Spanish, english, italian and french. I applaud them all. And I am saving the best for last......the food. Amazing, amazing, amazing. Everything we ate was appetizing and cooked to perfection. I will return to this hotel in a heatbeat. Maravilloso.

3rd time's a CHARM!

This was our third time at this resort and we will be back again! Everything was wonderful from start to finish. Room was clean and comfortable and staff was efficient and friendly. The beach is awesome and the service on the beach excellent. Plenty of beach chairs at both the pool and beach, and the food was great. Loved not having to make reservations! Can't wait to go back!

Excellent second visit

This was our second trip to Catalonia Maroma and I'm glad we visited again! The food and drink was great and we wish we could have stayed longer. The only downside to this place was that smoking is allowed, though there are only a few smokers.Great service, food, and value. Great for couples, families, and groups.
