Our Opinion

The Catalonia Playa Maroma is a very good 3.5 star resort, some would even say 4 star resort. An expansive, white sand beach is the highlight of this resort and exactly what you would expect from a top Riviera Maya beach. The rooms are decent and the food is fine, but the real treat here is the beach. A definite recommendation.

Catalonia Playa Maroma

"We had a wonderful week at the Playa Maroma. The grounds are a lush tropical jungle and the beach is pure white sand with the bluest ocean. Some of the buildings require renovations but are kept very clean and look so authentic. It is not a massive hotel building like many other resorts. Instead it is made up of 6 smaller buildings each away from the other. The food is fine in the buffet, nothing fancy but good food and lots of choices. If you can't find something there to eat there is something wrong with you. The ala cartes are good as well. Our favorite was the steak house (Tortuga). The staff all work so very hard at this resort and try very hard to make your stay one to remember. We would highly recommend this resort and booking on Escapes made it all very easy." [...]

"My boyfriend and I stayed in this resort the 1st week of March/10. We cannot say enough about the incredible Catalonia Maroma. The beach was so beautiful (a personal dream of mine to see the crystal clear Caribbean) soft white sand, very clean, beautiful water. The hotel grounds were spotless, always. The buffet was more than excellent (if you can't find something to eat here, well, then you are hopeless) Don't recommend the a la cartes...they just don't measure up to a supposed fine dining experience...we went to the buffet for dessert after eating in the Mexican and Italian a la cartes. The staff work incredibly hard and are always smiling and greeting "Hola." The tours to Chichen Itza and Puerto Moreles were wonderful! Definitely take the complimentary shuttle into Playa del Carmen. No complaints at all...we will return because a week was not long enough.

"Catalonia Playa Maroma is a fantastic resort. We found the food to be the best we've ever had at an all-inclusive resort. The buffet was good and had lots of choices even for our vegetarian travel companions. You can eat as many times as you wish at the two a la carte restaurants, Tio Pedro and La Tortuga. Our favourite was Tio Pedro. Make sure you experience the Mayan coffee at the end of your meal here. We also enjoyed the creperie at the beach bar and the great cappuccino, espresso and Americano coffees at both bars. The beach is the best we've been at on the Mayan Riviera - powder soft white sand and various shades of brilliant blue water with no rocks anywhere in the water. The room was good, nothing fancy but clean and all we could need with a fridge stocked with pop and bottled water and a digital safe. The majority of the guests at the resort were Italian or French but it just added to the experience for us. The animation staff all seem to speak Italian, Spanish, French and English and will encourage you to participate as much as you wish.
Bottom line - we can't wait to go back!" [...]

"I can honestly not say enough good things about this place. The staff could not do enough to ensure that we enjoyed our stay. Everyone spoke at least 4 languages. The mix of European and North Americans was wonderful. The rooms were very clean (love the bathroom with the great rain shower head)..... I wished they had more Mexican food, rather than the pizza/pasta stations, but the food was lovely. The entertainment provided at the hotel was great, and the staff really engage the guests. I would highly recommend this place to everyone!" [...]

"Beautiful beach, wide white sand, and no rocks , seaweed and perfect for swimming. You can walk forever . Lots of chairs at any time . Not sure about the pool, but any time we walked to and from the beach there were always chairs available. We have travelled to Punta Cana,. DR, Margarita Island, Venezuela, Cuba and other parts of Mexico and this beach is one of the top. We heard it's rated one of the top 10 in the world by the Travel Channel. At least 200 feet deep of beach and cool white sand. Food is fine, a bit repetitive after 3 weeks , but you will certainly not go hungry. Mexican night is on Thursday , lots too eat. I actually perfer Mexican food and wished they had more of it on a regular basis at the buffet. The ala cartes I heard were wonderful, in the 3 weeks stay we never went , so the buffet must have been fine. The snack bar located to the left of the pool always had great burgers, panini's , fries, chicken nuggets or pizza. Hotel staff are very accomodating , no problem with any language as they speak at least 4. The hotel is clean and yes the beds are a little on the hard side, but slept fine. The rooms could use some interior decorating but if this happens the price will also go up as with a beach like the one they have could certainly ask more." [...]

"We stayed at the Catalonia Playa Maroma Mar. 21-28, 2008 as a mother and 17 year old daughter on spring break. We were happy with our room except that the grouting in the shower needed to be redone. The beds were firm but comfy and the room was spacious enough. The electronic safe worked well, no key to worry about. We found the buffet restaurant OK but not outstanding. The two a la carte restaurants, however, were fabulous and your visits there were unlimited so you could dine there nightly if you so desired (which we wished we had done). We found that almost all of the staff spoke at least a little English, but it is usually their second or third language (out of four or five). Being English speaking guests, we were definitely a minority but we didn't find that a problem as we weren't really there to socialize. The beach was gorgeous and we were usually able to find chairs where we wanted to sit. The pool was really nice as well although we spent the majority of our time on the beach. The animation staff did a great job entertaining guests of all ages and their efforts made the trip even more memorable. They put on a different show in the theatre every night and all the ones we saw were very good. We definitely liked the way the hotel was set up. The jungle growing up the main path made the accomodations seem much more private, and it was nice not to be in a huge, multi-storey hotel. There was a construction site next door, but there was no activity going on while we were there. All in all, we had a very enjoyable week and would definitely go back :)" [...]
