Our Opinion

Great adults-only resort. There are typical buffet items and a variety of a la carte items to choose from. While the resort caters to adults-only clients, parts of the beach have a tendency to get a little noisy, due to the animation team.

Overview

Located on beautiful Xpu-Ha Beach, this deluxe adults-only resort provides a romantic setting with a peaceful atmosphere. Surrounded by native jungle trees, local plants, mangroves and cenotes - natural underground springs, native to the Mayan Coast.

Location: On Xpu-Ha Beach in the Mayan Riviera, between Cancun and Tulum, 15 min from Playa del Carmen, 45 min from the airport, close to the archeological sites of Coba & Tulum.

Highlights
  • Nice pool area with Balinese beds
  • Large beautiful beach
  • Spacious rooms with furnished balconies
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Surrounded by jungle and natural cenotes
  • Awarded TripAdvisor's Certificate of Excellence

Vacation

Overall, a beautiful relaxing resort. The resort staff are amazing and attentive. The food is great. However, watch out for the sales people wanting you to enroll in their travelers club. They are stationed in high traffic areas and are relentless.

Our trip

It was their first time at this location and we are very impressed with the quality for our money. There were a few service issues in regards to restocking the room with items that were needed and requested yet never received

First time to Riviera Maya coast

Just returned from two weeks at the Catalonia Royal Tulum, which is located on an fairly narrow site stretching about a third of a mile between the motorway/ highway and the beach. This was an unusual hotel which grew on you as the holiday progressed, being located in a swampy area with a vegetation canopy covering up to the second of three floors on each of the six accommodation blocks, the pathways being raised above the natural ground level some on wooden raised walkways. All these had lighting to great effect at night. There were several specie of animals and birds in the canopy which provided an interest not normally experienced - the main one being a Coati a small strange dog like creature with a long nose and very large tail which it used for balance moving through the trees. The rooms were large and very clean and provided all you needed for a comfortable stay. I think it fair to say the beds were unbelievably comfortable for a good nights sleep. Towels were changed daily as were the beach towels at your room in the evening.Overall there were eight eating facilities or nine with the upgrade to 'Privilege' for the Beloved restaurant which is open all day - Although not advertised as such it is a fish restaurant only at night. The Asian, Italian, Mexican, Tapas Bar and Grill bar were open for dinner only. The Asian and Italian were our favourites as we had bad experiences at the Beloved, Mexican and Grill bar - We didn't try the Tapas or Pizza bars. The La Salva buffet restaurant was excellent for breakfast and occasional evening meal with a large and varied selection to suite all tastes and nationalities. Likewise the La Palapa alongside the pool was very good for lunch. Clearly these are only my views on the restaurants but we did hear others expressing similar comments. The evening stage show entertainment was probably the best at any hotel we have visited around the world - our favourite being 'The Three Tenors' who were on one night and were outstanding. The hotel staff were excellent in all ways with a number of unusual things like Ana walking round the pool and beach a few of the days with the daily Quiz Question. The Xylophone music in the lunch facility, the fashion shows with professional models around the pool, with an extra barbecues at lunchtime. There were so many different things going on which you could participate in but were not pressed to do so. As stated all the staff were good but I have to mention Rosetta who was larger than life and a continual source of fun and laughter whenever you saw her. She even took part in the fashion show - every hotel needs a Rosetta. The pool was very large and had plenty of Sun Umbrellas', some of which were available at any time of the day. The beach was lovely with near white sand and the sea was warm and beautifully blue. It was a shame there were Palm Trees but no sun umbrellas' on the beach and the beds were crammed together, which rather spoilt the facility. We booked a trip to a Mayan village at Coba through 'Alltournative', a local company with a desk in the hotel - it's worth looking at them before booking with your travel company for trips. Alejandro (Alex) was a dream guide with a fantastic knowledge and interest in the Mayan people and took great interest in promoting the history of these people. We saw the local temples and places where a ball game like Pelota was played 1200 years ago, met the village religious man and had lunch in the village. This was a truly interesting day, made a lot more so by the enthusiasm of Alex. Negatives - The front of the hotel being directly onto the main motorway/ highway with no pavements it was not safe for visitors to walk along the road and the nearest towns were a 25 minute minibus ride in either direction - Tulum or Playa De Carmen - Minibus $MX40 each way per person (about £1.80) a taxi being $MX300 each way (about £12.00). The other point of disappointment was the hard selling of the Hotel Executive Club part of the World Traveller Membership. This occurs immediately on arrival by staff walking with you down to your rooms and telling you about the facilities and asking you questions about yourself. Having been travelling for upward of 10 hours you are not expecting it and once engaged they are difficult to refuse without being very direct, which is not what you need at the start of the holiday. I have raised this with the travel company we used. All in all a enjoyable holiday with a lot of good things to remember. Would I return probably not.

Incredible hotel with wonderful staff

Catalonia Royal Tulum is hands down the nicest hotel my husband or I have ever stayed at! We came here for the first 4 days of our honeymoon, and our experience was nothing short of magical. Neither of us had stayed at an all-inclusive before and were somewhat skeptical that it would be worth the cost. Needless to say, it exceeded all of our expectations. My husband usually doesn't want to return somewhere he has already been because he likes experiencing new places, but even he said he absolutely wants to come back here. Everything was top notch: the stunning stone walkways, the lush greenery and trees, the wildlife (coatí, iguana, lizard, tropical birds, fish, etc), the gorgeous beach, the gourmet food, the pristine rooms, and the friendly staff. This hotel is such an excellent place to unwind, rejuvenate, and toss back some delicious tropical drinks! It was great that the pool and beach were further removed from the hotel rooms and some of the restaurants, because when there were activities or shows going on at the pool area, it didn't take away from the peaceful atmosphere of the other areas. The shows and activities we did attend were wonderful and a lot of fun! We would definitely recommend this spot to anyone! I would also recommend to other travelers to upgrade to the "Privileged" package (this was one step up from the standard package and was only about $20 extra per person per night). The Privileged package upgrades your room, but more importantly gives you access to a special restaurant right on the beach as well as a reserved beach area with fantastic food/drink service while you are relaxing underneath the palm trees. The food at the other restaurants is still great, but the food at the special restaurant is mind-blowingingly good. Shout out to Sarah & Josian (servers at the privileged beach area), Israel & Rosario (servers at B-Loved), and Angel (at the front desk) for your excellent service!! We greatly appreciated your welcoming smiles and hard work!
