Our Opinion

Great adults-only resort. There are typical buffet items and a variety of a la carte items to choose from. While the resort caters to adults-only clients, parts of the beach have a tendency to get a little noisy, due to the animation team.

Overview

Located on beautiful Xpu-Ha Beach, this deluxe adults-only resort provides a romantic setting with a peaceful atmosphere. Surrounded by native jungle trees, local plants, mangroves and cenotes - natural underground springs, native to the Mayan Coast.

Location: On Xpu-Ha Beach in the Mayan Riviera, between Cancun and Tulum, 15 min from Playa del Carmen, 45 min from the airport, close to the archeological sites of Coba & Tulum.

Highlights
  • Nice pool area with Balinese beds
  • Large beautiful beach
  • Spacious rooms with furnished balconies
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Surrounded by jungle and natural cenotes
  • Awarded TripAdvisor's Certificate of Excellence

Perfect stay

Staff, grounds, beach and restaurants were all perfect. Each aspect of this hotel made it a fun and relaxing vacation. Being able to visit the tulum ruins and chitzen itza from this hotel is an added perk.

Nice resort, beautiful beach, not worth upgrades

We booked Catalonia Royal Tulum for our honeymoon, and it turned out to be a great resort. We were "privileged" guests, so we had access to the BLoved restaurant, which had great food and good bartenders. The worst part of our stay was when they talked us into seeing their other resort ten minutes away, offered us breakfast, and told us we'd have a brief "sales presentation" that altogether would take 1.5 hours. Three hours later, I was furious because the salesman was extremely pushy with their version of a timeshare, and would not take no for an answer. Just say no to seeing their other location-- the beach at the Tulum location is much better. My husband upgraded us, I think to the honeymoon package, which included a bigger room, a massage for both of us, dinner on the beach, a fruit basket with champagne, and a bottle of tequila. The upgrade honestly wasn't worth the money at all-- our room was pretty basic still; nice, but not what I would consider much different from a regular room, the massages were awful; it didn't seem the spa staff were trained properly, and the basket was basically grapes and a few apples. However we did really enjoy the dinner on the beach, that was lovely. Overall, we would definitely recommend the resort, however if we come back, we wouldn't upgrade, and will be sure to say no to anything additional that staff offer us.

Hotel website does not do it justice

Catalonia Royal Tulum was a wonderful place to stay. As my 5th all-inclusive resort , it was by far by favourite experience. The Hotel is making strides in being Eco-friendly, not using disposable cups or straws, promoting water conservation and the landscaping protects and displays the natural flora and fauna. The pathways to and from the rooms have labelled plants and informational plaques , the walkways are built up so as not to disturb mangroves and other natural aspects of the resort. The staff were all wonderful and the food was excellent! My favourite place to hangout was on he beach in a hammock, but the resort was quiet and offered a variety of options for tanning, reading, swimming and napping during the day.The hotel provided translation cards for me to carry around to the various restaurants so the staff were able to understand my allergies. I did not have any problems finding gluten free food options. I can't wait to go back!

High hopes at the end of a long vacation in Mexico

We chose to come to Catalonia after reviewing this places reviews on tripadvisor. This all inclusive was highly rated and fit nicely into our vacation schedule. The pros of staying here: The resort had beautiful grounds. The food at all the dining areas we tried were delicious. The beach was nice especially since we had the privilege package. I highly recommend getting that if you decide to travel here. My new bride (we were on our honeymoon) and I spent alot of time at the Beloved restaurant on the beach. In the morning, they served the best breakfast's we had at Catalonia. At night, they also had the most tasty dinner menu and the bartender at their restaurant bar was alot of fun. Our honeymoon package also included visitation to the spa where we could use the sauna and plunge pull. This was a very nice addition in the package. The cons: We showed up at 11pm our first night of checking in as newlyweds. We booked the honeymoon package, but we didn't get a real honeymoon experience here. The receptionist that checked us in didn't bother to tell us congratulations and was very much in a hurry to get us through our check in. Our first room was on the first floor where we could here the noise of patrons walking at any time. We asked for a room change and even thought the hotel was almost completely booked, the staff was able to find something for us the next day. This was only after demanding to talk to a manager in the morning. The amenities that came with the honeymoon package seemed to be an after thought. Our door was supposed to be decorated with a congratulations sash for being newlyweds, but this wasnt done for our first room. It was only after we were transferred to another room that this sash showed up. We were supposed to get a fruit basket as a part of our package. We received this basket on the third day of our 4 day stay. I went to the buffet one day wanting to bring food back to the room because I wanted to relax with my wife, but the hostess told me this was not allowed. They took the plate of food away from me and informed me they would be happy to deliver the food I had picked out of the buffet. The food didn't show up to the room until an hour later. Lastly, their food room service menu is very sparse especially after 10 or 11pm. I believe it was limited to a couple of cold items such as a sandwich and then I believe they had hot dogs on their after hours menu. All in all, I believe the grounds are beautiful here, and the rooms are above average. The beach is also very nice, but I would have imagined the customer service would be better since this was a smaller resort compared to the mega 500+ room resorts not far from where this resort is located. This place is supposed to be an all inclusive resort, but you actually have to pay extra to get access to "special" beach fronts and "special" dining areas. I would have also imagined the wait staff would speak more English since the prior resorts we stayed at in Riviera Maya, and Tulum had staff that did. I would not visit here again because we had such high hopes for this resort after being in Mexico for two weeks prior to our arrival, and having such a great time at our other stops. The customer service here was the biggest draw back.

Relaxing weeklong vacation

My daughter and I returned to this hotel for the 2nd year. Our expectations were met at every point of our stay.We chose the priviledged option. Food is fabulous and the staff could not be more accomodating. In particular, Genie at the beach made sure our drinks were always replenished. She was always happy and gracious. We usually took lunch at the buffet and enjoyed having Amado as our waiter. He remembered our names and made us feel very welcome. Looking forward to visiting next year. Only negative- I would like to be able to exchange my beach towel during the day!
