Our Opinion

Great adults-only resort. There are typical buffet items and a variety of a la carte items to choose from. While the resort caters to adults-only clients, parts of the beach have a tendency to get a little noisy, due to the animation team.

It just keeps getting better

Just returned from a week at Catalonia Royal Tulum. This was my 3rd visit, and I fall more in love with the place every time I go. The first view you get from the road is quite underwhelming compared to some of the other resorts you pass along the way, but don't let that fool you! The resort is beautiful and well maintained. Pros: 1) amazing beach with no other resort close by. The sand is soft with a slight pink hue, and the water welcoming with no areas of rocks that many other resorts in the area have. I have been to many other beaches, and this is by far the best. The are always plenty of beach chairs, and lots of shade if you so desire. Augusto the beach waiter made sure we were never without a drink if we wanted one. He remembered what we were drinking from day to day, and always offered us the next day whatever we were last drinking the day prior. 2) adults only - I never seem to get annoyed with kids around at other resorts, but there is something to be said about there being little other stimulus to take away from the sounds of the oceans, breeze, and birds. If you do want a bit of extra stimulus, just find Rosa with the activities group. The woman is never without a smile, and will keep you entertained. Every time I saw her I just naturally started smiling. You cannot hep but feel her positive energy! 3) restaurants are first come first serve, so no having to get reservations at either too early of a time where you have to leave the beach before you want, or too late that it is nearly bedtime. f there does happen to be a wait, they do have pagers they can give you don't have to wait right there. We never did have to wait, so not sure how well they work or anything. The dress code is very casual, and I prefer not to have to "dress" for meals, so this is right up my alley. Gabrielle and Alejandro at the Italian restaurant are amazing, so pleasant, kind and efficient. Both of them have worked at CRT for all of my prior visits. At the Italian restaurant, a woman sitting across from me spilled tomato sauce on her shirt and was trying to clean it with a bit of water, and Alejandro came along with a stain stick to help her get the sauce out! Wow! The food was excellent at all the restaurants. Breakfast and lunch buffets were great as well. 4) the people that work here. They really do seem to enjoy their jobs, and are happy. The last day we were there, several employees were on the beach playing volleyball, other just watching. They were having so much fun, and joking around with each other. A few other employees that looked like some of the "higher ups" were grilling food for all of the others. So essentially they had a beach party. It was so wonderful to see them all having a good time and being treated well by their employer. Some people have the attitude that tips are included at an all inclusive. I am not one of them. I come with a lot of tip money and if they treat me well, I will most certainly tip them for what they do. 5) Rooms - the rooms are large and clean. The mini fridge is stocked daily with pop, water, beer, and even oreos! The bathroom is large, and the shower also large with no shortage of hot water. Some rooms do have a little card slot just inside the door that you have to put a room key in for the electric to work. We found this to be a bit of a nuisance, so just brought a gift card from home to keep in it all week. The beds are softer than any other Mexican resort I have stayed at, but not too soft. They have a pillow menu to choose different pillows should you like. Cons: I honestly cannot think of any for myself. If you like to wear stiletto heels, I say keep them at home, and they could be hard to negotiate on the walk ways. If mobility is an issue for you, the length of the resort from lobby to beach is a bit of a distance, but I don't think it is such that it would hamper somebody's vacation. I would just plan my trips accordingly and pace myself if needed. CRT is truly a little slice of heaven. I have already booked a return trip for next year!

Wonderful

We stayed here for 2 weeks and absolutely loved our time there. The transfer time was around an hour and a half, so 19 hours from getting out of bed to reaching the hotel, long day. On arrival we checked in with no problems, we weren't offered to upgrade but we were not going to upgrade anyway. We were given a map and were shown where all the facilities were on there. We decided to eat first before going to the room as we were tired and just wanted to eat something and sleep. On arrival at the room we were pleasantly surprised to find we had an upgraded room. It was quite large with a settee too. The bathroom was a good size and had a large shower which was always powerful and hot. Food in all the restaurants was very good, my wife's favourite was the buffet as she liked to see and pick what she liked. I loved the tapas, the food and the setting was lovely. This was closely followed by the Asian and the Italian. The steakhouse was pretty good to. Our least favourite ironically was the Mexican. The room was cleaned daily to a high standard. Fridge was always restocked and the beach towels were changed every day. The grounds of the hotel were immaculately kept, the path to the beach was amazing. We loved our walks to the beach and to breakfast. We loved the wildlife, the baby coatis were v cute. The beach and pool area were beautiful. The pool is large and well kept. There are plenty of beds around the pool and we had no problems getting any. There are the usual 6am bandits but if you can be bothered to get up at that time on ya holiday just to get a certain bed good on ya, I personally could not be bothered and defo not something I'm about to get stressed about. The gym is small but has all the essential equipment and the view from the running machines was lovely, great to watch the sunrise as you doing ya run. Service around the pool was second to none, the ladies serving always had a smile and were round quite often. The juice bar on the beach was also very good, he had a decent choice, very refreshing in the hot weather. The entertainment team, there has been lots said about the entertainment team, they only bother with the Italians, they don't include anyone else etc etc. I did not find this the case. I joined in the beach volleyball the first day and played nearly everyday after that, I was asked daily if I was playing and also included in other activities too. You just have to get involved. There has also been complaints about the Italians being loud and rude, most of the complaints coming from our American friends. Well I did not find this the case. The Italians are animated, that's their culture. They are a little loud sometimes when they are enjoying themselves(well they are on holiday) but I never found them rude at all, quite the opposite. The Americans on the other hand, and I don't include all Americans, before I'm lynched, seem to be loud for being louds sake. I do not want to hear your life story from the other side of the pool, turn down the volume please. We loved our time there. Would we return, no, but only because we like to visit other places. Would I recommend this hotel, in a heartbeat.

Mostly excellent, few faults.

Arrived at the hotel on a warm rainy afternoon and It rained heavy for most of the evening, apart from this we only had about 10 mins rain on another evening.Room:- We had upgraded to one of the honeymoon rooms which was on the first floor of block 4. The room was spacious with all the usual amenities, except for a kettle, you do get a coffee maker but a kettle helps us Brits make that first cup of tea in the morning. The view from our balcony is restricted due to the trees outside, however this does help to keep the room cool, we didn't need the air conditioning or ceiling fan. With being in one of the central blocks it also made it close to both the beach area and reception, a special mention to the evening room maid for her attentiveness and different towel statues created.Beach:- As we had upgraded we could use the 'private' area on the beach although all the beach area got crowded and I would suggest you head for the edges of the beach area. Heading to the beach early one morning to take photos of the sunrise I also found that people had selected their beach area well before this. You do get the local beach hawker but they are not intrusive, actually very pleasant, what is a pain are the spa 'sales people' who with pester you 4 or 5 times a day to use the spa.Restaurants:- My wife is a celiac so we avoided the Mexican and Spanish restaurants, we did use the others. We had concerns with the Italian however with our Spanish version of the celiac travel card, they checked with the chef and advised what could be eaten, they even had gluten free pasta. A similar response was also obtained from the steak bar and Bloved with a nice meal enjoyed at all. The only negative was at the Asian restaurant, again card produced, advice received, only when it came to the desert after one bite the wife sensed something was wrong and yes gluten reaction a few hours later. The staff at the Italian, steak and Bloved were a delight and even helped us learn a few more Spanish words I can now ask for a tocino butty.Spa:- Although you are pester to use the spa, when we did use it for a massage at the end of the first week we were so impressed by the treatment we booked for another massage in the second week. Well worth a visit to help you relax, only I would give the gym a miss.Exclusive/Privileged/Tipping:- We had upgraded so got a few extras 'thrown in', although the real benefits are for the Exclusive club members, we were invited to an introduction meeting to join the Exclusive, however decided not to bother. Tipping as with all places is a 'requirement' hence take a number of small denomination notes.WiFi:- This is present throughout the hotel and on the beach, it can be a bit hit and miss, a few times showing a good strong connection it just wouldn't download anything, the hotel rooms tend to be good, elsewhere poor.General:-Evening entertainment around the pool area, it only last for about 45 minutes each evening, the three tenors were excellent I could have listened to them all evening, as for the karaoke, I would give that a miss. You do get some wild animals in the garden area, they are cute and they do keep a bit of a distance from you unless you start to feed them. If you feed them they will come closer and start pawing you, hence to state the obvious if you don't want to run the risk of them accidentally scratching you don't offer them food. One interesting fact is the hotel tell you they cannot accept American dollars as payment although all the hotel prices are first quoted in US dollars.

Amazing, can't wait to go back!

This was an amazing trip. From the moment we arrived at the property we were greeted warmly and made to feel really welcome. We lucked into a free room upgrade. The food was fantastic. The beach and pool were beautiful. Staff was super friendly and helpful. We're already planning our next trip and can't get back there soon enough.

Just wonderful.... no other words!

We returned from this amazing Hotel last week, and I am already suffering from withdrawal symptoms! I was a little worried having looked at the weather forecast before we went, which said cloudy days and thunderstorms. However, we saw a few white clouds in an amazing cobalt blue sky on a couple of days and a dramatic shower that lasted 5mins whilst we were in the sea on one day... so I had no need to worry - the other days were circa 29 degree temperatures with a lovely cool breeze from the sea.We stayed in a privilege deluxe room which was just wonderful. I am a very bad sleeper, but managed to sleep for 14 hours on day 2... the bed was just so comfortable. Thank goodness for the complimentary mini-bar as my Husband missed dinner on that evening - he now has a love of Oreo's!All of the staff were just so very friendly, everyone said hello and nothing was too much trouble. The waitresses on the beach soon came to know our drinks, and just on confirmation that we would like service they didn't need to ask what we wanted.. just kept replenishing our favourite Pina Colada and Miami Vice Cocktails. The host, waiters and waitresses in the B-Loved Restaurant were exceptional - although I do have them to blame for our new found love of Mango Daiquiri's... the recipe for which I have been instructed to seek out by my husband as that will be our welcome drink for the family on Christmas day! This really was a chill-out holiday for us - the beach was just awesome, from the beautiful white sandy beach as far as the eye could see, to the sound of the ocean and the lovely temperature of the sea..... just perfect. There was never a problem getting a sunbed and we enjoyed the same spot on the beach for our 14 day stay... the ideal location for reading, sunning ourselves and just taking in the beautiful surroundings. The activities team were great fun - although not "pushy" in their approach to get you to join us.. more informative of the events available for the day. So there was a little or as much entertainment as you wanted. The Coatis (racoon like fox type creatures) that live near the apartment blocks were just so cute, and were not bothered by us at all... We found the steakhouse and B-Loved were the best places to eat. The international buffet was great for breakfast, but not our cup of tea in the evening after eating there on one occasion. The Mexican and Italian Restaurants were fine... we were disappointed that the Tapas Bar appeared to be closed throughout our stay, as we thought this would be a lighter eating experience - hopefully it will be up and running again by our next visit........ We are DEFINITELY hoping to return to this Hotel again and again. We have so many lovely memories of our belated Honeymoon - definitely a resort I would go back to again and again.Thank you to all the staff that made our holiday so wonderful.
