Our Opinion

Great adults-only resort. There are typical buffet items and a variety of a la carte items to choose from. While the resort caters to adults-only clients, parts of the beach have a tendency to get a little noisy, due to the animation team.

Overview

Located on beautiful Xpu-Ha Beach, this deluxe adults-only resort provides a romantic setting with a peaceful atmosphere. Surrounded by native jungle trees, local plants, mangroves and cenotes - natural underground springs, native to the Mayan Coast.

Location: On Xpu-Ha Beach in the Mayan Riviera, between Cancun and Tulum, 15 min from Playa del Carmen, 45 min from the airport, close to the archeological sites of Coba & Tulum.

Beautiful Resort all around!

We stayed here for 10 days in June 2017 for our honeymoon. When we arrived we figured we might as well upgrade to privilege room as it was our honeymoon. Firstly, we probably would have been fine with not upgrading... but the beloved restaurant and service alone made everything worth it! The staff were so friendly, we noticed a difference between them and the service we got just at regular restaurants. The ladies serving drinks on the beach always made us laugh and always had a drink ready to go just as we finished the last one. The water at the beach was crystal clear, with a bit of waves and wind most days but it was so hot that we didn't mind. The sand was so clean and soft. Just be careful if you go down at night as the sand bugs really come out, make sure you spray yourself with bug spray! The beach is fine to walk as long as you stay on the water side. The rooms are beautifully maintained and the housekeepers always made sure to restock our fridge... most of the time with lots of extras ;). Turn down service every night was nice. The resort its self is perfect size for walking the whole thing no problem. Getting from the lobby to the beach was just one beautiful nature walking path with lots of animals. We especially loved walking it at night while it was all lit up! There is also something to do for everyone. Entertainment every night, disco, shows, etc. The only thing they could maybe use is a casino. ;) Close to many attractions making it easy to do many excursions. Highly recommend checking out some cenotes, tulum ruins and going atving!!!!! The resort is About a 45 min drive from Cancun airport. A little smile and politeness goes a long way. Treat the workers the way you would like to be treated and you will have a fabulous time! We enjoyed every bit of our trip, and would absolutely come back one day!

Beautiful

Where do I even begin? This resort is absolutely gorgeous and the true meaning of a tropical getaway. The beach is the most breathtaking beach we have seen in Mexico. I'll admit I had some reservations after booking and reading some of the negative reviews here. However, after arriving and spending a week here I've realized two things. 1. There are two types of people who vacation to Mexico. Those who want all the bells and whistles of an overcrowded resort and those who want to feel like they're in another world and have what I call an "authentic" experience. 2. Some people will never be satisfied no matter what.Upon arriving, we were greeted with a welcome drink in the beautiful open air lobby (yes, it's warm. It's Mexico in July). Check in was a breeze and everyone from the bellhop to the front desk representative was extremely friendly and helpful. We were given a quick overview of the hotel and a map to our room. We proceeded down the beautiful stone walkway and wooden bridges over a cenote to our priveledged room in building 3. The room: everything we needed, nothing more nothing less. King size bed with crisp white linens, a fridge stocked with beer, Pepsi, juice, plenty of water and snacks. Some people complain that the room view is all jungle and yes, it is. We enjoyed so much to sit outside and see all the beautiful wildlife while enjoying a drink in the evening before dinner. Bathroom is spacious and the rain shower was an added plus. They have a pillow menu to choose a pillow that's just right for you should you need it. Housekeeping was exceptional and never a miss. One night (our anniversary) we returned to our room to be greeted with a bottle of champagne and some delicious chocolates. The food: we didn't get to try every a la carte restaurant however I will review the places we did try. La Selva (breakfast and dinner buffet): Lots of delicious options to choose from. If you don't find something you like maybe you are far too picky! Service was always excellent. Mexican restaurant: this one surprised us. Out of all the restaurants we reviewed it seemed the Mexican restaurant always got the worst reviews. Being Hispanic, my husband and I know a thing or two about authentic Mexican cuisine. This restaurant was one of our favorites. The food was fresh and flavorful. Ending the dinner with a cup of fresh Mexican coffee (add tequila) with our dessert was the perfect touch. Royal grill (steak house dinner by the pool/beach): again, delicious. Flavors were plentiful however, ordering medium well meant the steaks we received were on the tougher side and more like well done. Another visit to the restaurant on our last night and ordering medium rare provided the perfect cut of meat with just the right amount of tenderness. Beloved: we enjoyed breakfast and lunch at this restaurant. The food was always fresh and never disappointed. Try the fish tacos... delicious!Tapas: this is a restaurant where you might want to order just one plate each for appetizers or order 3 each and receive great wine pairings in order to feel full. We came here for a drink and ordered the hummus and crab tostadas as an appetizer. Having a seat by the cenote was beautiful but definitely wear bug spray as the mosquitoes were out in full force. Lovely spot. Our thoughts on upgrading: This seems to be a highly debatable topic. Upgrading means you get a slightly upgraded room, access to Beloved and a smaller section on the beach (white beach loungers). The room was not so important to us however we would upgrade again in order to lounge on the beach in the privileged section. I suppose if you're used to crowded resorts, laying out in the "regular" section may not be an issue to you. That alone was worth the upgrade to feel like you had a little more space and were in a more intimate setting as there weren't nearly as many people on that side. It was also nice to have immediate access to beloved to get our own drinks, food and use the restroom. We will upgrade again. The only cons: 1. The Italian guests really did live up to their negative reviews. They do not move out of the way if you're walking down the same path and have no problems with "cutting" in line at the buffet. I hate to speak poorly of any group of people however it was extremely obnoxious and would happen every day without fail. A number of times, my husband and I would be walking hand in hand down the pathway and a group of guests would be standing literally, right in the middle of the walkway having a conversation. They did not budge an inch to make room for you. I ended up with a mouthful of palm leaf when a group of 4 young men wanted to walk side by side instead of making room for me. It's unfortunate that it seems it's not necessarily a matter of them being rude but this is just the way they are. 2. The exclusive travelers club. Don't listen to them if they tell you that it will only take 30 minutes and they'll give you all sorts of discounts. They wasted 3 hours of our morning after being extremely deceitful about the cost. We were interested at first until we found out the actual upfront cost of a 20 year membership. A firm NO in the beginning will keep them away. I really wish they would do away with this and be very upfront about the expectation as to not waste travelers time. All in all it was an amazing trip and I can not imagine returning to Mexico and not staying at the Catalonia Royal Tulum. We will be back soon!!!

Incredible Overall Stay

Best Beach Bliss is an understatement. White sandy beach and clear blue waters were just stunning. The chairs are comfy but a little crowded since the beach is small but was still amazing. We Went for the privileged package so we could have access to the BLoved restaurant and it was worth it! The food at BLoved was so fresh, beautifully presented and tasted delicious! Definitely wasn't your typical resort food. The italian restaurant La Toscana had excellent service and an amazing Mahi Mahi. Unfortunately the Tapas Lounge was infested with mosquito's so we weren't able to enjoy it. I wish they would have at least tried to light some citronella or hadn't have run out of OFF in the store. The snack bar had awesome guacamole and buffalo wings! The room we had was huge! The bed however was hard and the AC did little to cool it off. The shower was amazing but the bathroom amenities were pretty sub-par for the price of the hotel. And not to mention there were a ton ants. They do turn the room over 2 times a day regardless of the privacy door hanger. I think because they give you fresh pool towels at night. This didn't work real well for us because we were at the pool/beach all day and most of the night so we missed out on fresh towels. They also don't stock the mini fridge with many alcoholic beverage choices. Modelo...that was it. Now mind you, we paid for Privileged so I expected more. The pool is huge and we didn't really feel too crowded and there was plenty of chairs. I wish there was a swim up pool bar!I have 3 complaints: 1)Being that there wasn't a swim up bar there should have been tons of servers in my opinion. We had to get out of the pool/ocean every time we wanted some sort of refreshment. There were servers yes but they did not have enough staff for all of the people that were there, nor did they have enough bartenders. Was really frustrating when you are paying a pretty good petty for all-inclusive.2)They don't let you order food at the pool or beach. Every time you wanted a drink or food you had to walk somewhere and basically get dressed.3)What's up with the water situation? When ordering water you had to specify tall glass with ice or you basically got a shot of water. I get being environmentally friendly but one water bottle to just refill would have been fine!Overall This is resort is all that and then some! Staff was extremely friendly, the beach is gorgeous and the food was excellent. We will be back sooner than later!

Not what expected

Poor customer service. Poor drink Quality. Extra cost for some shows. Not worth the money. Rooms not cool enough. Lots of mosquitos and always sold out of bug spray. Not all inclusive when separated into different tiers. Housekeeping is hit and miss and never around the same time each day.

Loved my Vacation!

Great beach, great staff! Service is excellent! There was never a problem getting a chair at either the beach or the pool. Wait staff were fantastic! We even got to witness a turtle come ashore to lay eggs! Activities were fun each day. The room was beautiful and the shower was fantastic! Each night our bed was turned down, chocolates placed on our pillows and fresh beach towels cheerfully delivered to our room. The mini refrigerator in our room was stocked with drinks and snacks and the staff catered to us by stocking up on our favorites. Complementary robes and slippers were great! Excellent vacation!
