Our Opinion

Great adults-only resort. There are typical buffet items and a variety of a la carte items to choose from. While the resort caters to adults-only clients, parts of the beach have a tendency to get a little noisy, due to the animation team.

Overview

Located on beautiful Xpu-Ha Beach, this deluxe adults-only resort provides a romantic setting with a peaceful atmosphere. Surrounded by native jungle trees, local plants, mangroves and cenotes - natural underground springs, native to the Mayan Coast.

Location: On Xpu-Ha Beach in the Mayan Riviera, between Cancun and Tulum, 15 min from Playa del Carmen, 45 min from the airport, close to the archeological sites of Coba & Tulum.

Highlights
  • Nice pool area with Balinese beds
  • Large beautiful beach
  • Spacious rooms with furnished balconies
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Surrounded by jungle and natural cenotes
  • Awarded TripAdvisor's Certificate of Excellence

LATER BEACHES!!!!! (It's beachy babe)

Leaving this place is hard to do because of all of the beauty. My Husband and I came here with another couple. It is a bit of a walk from the lobby to the beach but makes sense because you eat a lot of food. We stayed in building five which is closer to the beach and chose 3rd floor so we would have lots of sun on the balcony; there were four or five flights of stairs which was also fine.People actually remember your name once you start frequenting the restaurants. Ana at reception, Annal, Enrique, Amado, Jeny, and Daniel helped to make this trip very special; everyone is really friendly. Wilberth works very hard at making fresh fruits and juices on the beach. ---PLEASE TIP; everybody works very hard and deserves a little extra, from the maids, the servers, to the bartenders, and the lady who makes fresh custom omelettes every morning at the breakfast buffet. There are tons of Italian people--apparently a travel agency helps to get them all great deals so they come here frequently. There are a lot of beautiful animals here. Very exotic ones that you should not feed yet it seemed like many people did.Bad points: there are not many bad points but lots of cigarette smoke and cigar smoke on the beach was gross. We did receive cold food most of the time but understand that they are busy so we just moved onto the next course. The food is overall pretty good but inconsistent. You can order one dish one day and it's completely different the next day. You have to come here with a chill attitude and nothing will really bother you because of the beauty and the friendly staff and the clean resort. The waves are so fun and it was one of the best oceans for swimming and playing that we have been to.There are no rocks in the ocean you can walk in feeling very confident. We did do the upgrade to privilege so we had a section dedicated to us, which was nice we actually watched security remove nonprivileged people many times. Along with privileged comes the ability to dine at beloved restaurant. The food is good not great but the view was totally worth it.I think there is good food and fast food at all of the restaurants but overall it was good you will not be disappointed. And regarding the Mexican restaurant which has really bad reviews it was delicious they have Mexican coffee a wonderful shrimp burrito and a great desserts. Their salsas are authentic spicy and delicious. You should arrive to the restaurants before 7 o'clock or you can expect a wait.

Nice Resort but.......

Grounds – Very small resort. There were always people working hard at keeping the resort grounds clean. The resort is basically one long walkway from the lobby/restaurants to the pool/beach/restaurants. On each side of the walkway are buildings with the rooms. The walkway from the last room to the pool area is a wooden bridge through a mangrove. If you like wildlife you will love this resort. Plenty of adorable animals, birds and iguanas along the walkway.Rooms - Nice spacious room. The temperature in the room was a little too warm – they need to turn the a/c up a degree or two. Very comfortable beds. Housekeeping - No complaints on housekeeping. Every day there was a different towel animal with hibiscus flowers…a nice touch.Beautiful beach – great for walking. Tons of chairs and trees for shade. At times the beach seemed crowded with not too many available chairs. This resort does not have a wide beach so the chairs are very close together (look at photos on Trip Advisor). People do move the chairs around so by the end of the day they are scattered and it didn’t seem that crowded.Ocean - beautiful clean/clear ocean most of our stay – there was one day when the water was cloudy and had quite a bit of seaweed.Seaweed – The resort workers did a great job keeping the beach clean from seaweed. Early morning, each day, they would rake and pick up the seaweed. A couple days there was quite a bit of seaweed – they worked well into the afternoon cleaning it up….hardworking guys!!Beach Towels – Their beach towel policy needs to change. The beach towels are exchanged in the room with their nightly turndown service. Except this doesn’t happen every night. 3 of 6 nights we were there our turndown did not happen and our towels were not replaced. I get up early in the morning - I had to walk to the lobby to get clean towels. Much better if towels can be exchanged any time, usually around the pool area, like at other resorts.Food – very good food at buffets, Italian & Steak House restaurants.Breakfast Buffet – nice variety – same as other AI resorts. Great job by the people who cook your eggs while you wait. The wait staff was not always good – looked like they didn’t have enough workers to accommodate the guests. Lunch/Dinner Buffet – nice variety – salads, hot food, fruit, pasta, cold cuts, breads, desserts. They also had someone cooking your choice of beef, pork, chicken, fish, squid while you waited – great job by those guys! The wait staff was not always good – looked like they didn’t have enough workers to accommodate the guests. Room Service - 24 hour room service is advertised. Due to a delay with our plane we arrived at the resort a little after midnight. While I understand that they cannot have a full menu 24 hours…….the choice for room service was a hot dog, ham & cheese sandwich and salad. We were starving so we ordered sandwiches and salads……they were horrible!!Italian Restaurant – Good food, good service.Steak House – Great food, great service – we ate there twice!!I agree that the entertainment people on the beach cater to Italian speaking guests. We enjoyed the resort but would not return.

Amazing!

Amazing! You feel very secluded but yet you're not. Very safe. No worries about possessions being stolen. Very quite but yet fun place too. The only drawback we've had is that beds weren't that comfortable. We have a Privilege Deluxe room and would upstage again. The beach is beautiful and great for swimming. Plenty of areas for shade or sun. If you want a pool chair be out early. The spa is fabulous. And Beloved is our favorite restaurant. But have had no complaints about any food. The people are nice and friendly, and go out of their way to help you. Will refer friends and will be back!

Catalonia Royal Tulum

The most beautiful hotel and grounds I have ever seen. The food, drinks, atmosphere, beach, room and staff were absolutely wonderful. The pool area was so clean and the water was warm. We can't wait to come back, hopefully in October. We were told it was a good time to be in Mexico.

Overall Okay

The Catalonia hotel is one of many along the highway. According to other guests, the hotel is one of the best in the area. Two things that we disappointing to me were: 1) the pool closes at 7PM which was a bummer as it was still light out and we wanted to go swimming after excursions. 2) the AC in the room barely worked and we were hot at night. We did not talk to the reception about it because it was 90+ degrees everyday so it was expected. Overall, it was a good experience with EASY access to the highway for the collectivo. It was also centered between Playa de Carmen and Tulum, which made it so we can go into town for beaches, shopping, etc. The food as a whole was a little underwhelming, but the italian restaurant, breakfast, and mexican restaurant were good and consistent throughout the stay. Finally, although the website says not to tip, you can faster and better service if you do. They prefer USD for tipping.
