Our Opinion

Pleasant 4-star resort with friendly and attentive staff. The some parts of the beach might be a little rocky. However, there is a lagoon nearby that offers a better entry to the beach. This is a great place for those who want to discover sea life. The resort is well situated near to stores and the main Riviera strip.

Overview

This lively beachfront resort boasts fantastic services, facilities and amenities. Guests of the Catalonia will love the white sand and fresh water lagoon located adjacent to the hotel, a great place for small children to safely experience the sea.

Location: Directly on the beach, close to the Puerto Aventuras marina, approximately 15 minutes drive to Playa del Carmen, 60 minutes from the airport.

Highlights
  • Family friendly resort with plenty of activities
  • Great spa & fitness centre with waterfall and hydrotherapy pools
  • Located in the Puerto Aventuras resort area with shops and restaurants
  • A number of dining options
  • Free Wi-Fi

Great place to stay

I traveled alone, so this might not be useful for couples/families.Nice hotel with a beautiful beach. Helpful staff, clean rooms. The rooms have quite thin walls, but it wasn't a big issue during my stay.Lots of bars, wide selection of drinks/cocktails. Buffet-style meals with 4 themed restaurants for dinners. Don't believe the whiners here, if you don't find anything that you like food-wise, it is clearly not the hotel's fault...Exceptionally good wi-fi services throughout the hotel, even down by the beach. All in all, definitely worth the money, great place to relax and enjoy the winter sun!

Average vacation

This resort was decent but I would not give it more than 3.5 stars.Travelled as a family of 8 from Jan 4-11th 2017. Weather for most part was very nice with only a few cloudy afternoons. The buffets here were a bit odd as you had to wait for a table instead of being able to walk right in and seat yourself. Had a few experiences where I had to wait 10 minutes just to get a seat. The food was below average. Not a very good variety either. The a la carte restaurants were better than the buffets and the Italian one was the best out of all 4 . The Steak house restaurant was awful and what they "served" as steak did not look nor taste like it.All mixed drinks were served as triples / quads and if you want just a single shot you need to make sure you ask for it ahead of time. The bartenders at the pool bar outside of the buffet were quite rude and would ignore you unless you were tipping very well. They did have a self serve water station on some of the bars which was nice. The beach was okay but quite rocky and small. If you are looking for a nice long beach with lots of space and minimal rocks this is not the place. There were lots of beach chairs at beach but half of them were reserved for " privileged guests" which Costs approx an extra $30 CDN p.person/per day. This resort had lots of amenities for privileged only guests which was a bit frustrating as I feel we paid enough for the trip to be able to use all chairs, couches, loungers etc...The town of Playa Del Carmen was about a 25 min bus ride. Cab was approx $55 USD one way. I don't recommend eating off the resort as a few of us were sick from a restaurant called "Senor Frogs". I do recommend going into playa as the shopping is great and the public beach is also very nice. One great perk of this resort is that there is a marina/dining/shopping centre only 6 minutes to walk from the hotel. Here you can watch dolphins at any time of day or night, swim with them, shop , watch the seals etc... The resort has road bikes you can rent for free which makes the trip to this location very quick. Overall, a decent vacation as the weather was nice but I will not be going back to the Yucatan Catalonia due to the poor food and poor location.

Beautiful resort

Beautiful resort, with plenty to do. Just down from the hotel there is the marina, where you can experience swimming with dolphins and sea lions. Plenty of small restaurants if you don't want to eat at the hotel all the time. Good golf course within the complex. Hotel rooms are great, staff are very helpful and friendly. Plenty of sun beds by the pool or on the beach. You can even upgrade if you want for a reasonable amount of money. The restaurant offers a broad range of food, with beautiful views. There are another 4 restaurants which are first come first served basis, plenty of pools to choose from and free water sports. All in all a great location and hotel.

Holiday

Really good for all inclusive. Staff good room pretty good. Food has been excellent, probably the best all inclusive food I've had. Great location on beach and 2 minute walk to marina. Organised all our trips for us and good weather to cap it off. Several pools but we spent or still spending our time on the beach. Good for beginners snorkelling. Very safe. Will come again later in the year.

Great Kids Club and All-Natural Juice Bar!

We stayed at the Catalonia from Dec. 27 to Jan.3. I normally don't write very many reviews because I often lack the motivation to do so. This is an exception because the resort deserves credit for highly performing, especially in the following areas:1. Amazing Kids Club - especially the head teacher Irma. The woman in charge of activities, Irma, and the prime care givers for the kids Club (4 - 12) was AMAZING! Every day she would take care to plan out activity appropriate for the age range of the group and weather conditions. I have to to many resorts before and have never trusted my child (4 yrs.) with the kid club staff because they seemed to be disinterested and disengaged, Irma was the complete opposite of that. Irma, so good and warm with the children, and her helper Armando were very good at making each child feel like they were part of the group and special. My girl's a shy one, and she was begging to go to Mini Club due to her friend Irma! Mil gracias Irma. Te vamos a extranar, pero nos vemos pronto! :)2. All Natural Juice Bar (and Javier who works the bar). Yes, they have an all natural juice bar, that is similar to Booster Juice and available to guest all day long. Eating healthy is hard to do on vacation, and we found the juice bar really helped us get the nutrition we needed. 3. Location. We like to do a wide assortment of activities on vacation, and this hotel allows for that. There are two great, and child-friendly (very shallow for 10 meters or more and protected bay to avoid under currents and strong waves) beaches at the resort , and several well kept pools. WE really enjoyed the short and pretty walk to the marina, and it's many shops and restaurants.Overall, we would recommend this hotel. In fact, we plan to head back this spring, after years and countless stays at many other popular resorts (most recently Iberostar Pairiso - awful, and the Paradisus).Another shout-out to David from the restaurant. He was very attentive and friendly.
