Our Opinion

Pleasant 4-star resort with friendly and attentive staff. The some parts of the beach might be a little rocky. However, there is a lagoon nearby that offers a better entry to the beach. This is a great place for those who want to discover sea life. The resort is well situated near to stores and the main Riviera strip.

Overview

This lively beachfront resort boasts fantastic services, facilities and amenities. Guests of the Catalonia will love the white sand and fresh water lagoon located adjacent to the hotel, a great place for small children to safely experience the sea.

Location: Directly on the beach, close to the Puerto Aventuras marina, approximately 15 minutes drive to Playa del Carmen, 60 minutes from the airport.

Highlights
  • Family friendly resort with plenty of activities
  • Great spa & fitness centre with waterfall and hydrotherapy pools
  • Located in the Puerto Aventuras resort area with shops and restaurants
  • A number of dining options
  • Free Wi-Fi

It was okay..

We travelled to the Catalonia Yucatan on April 9 to 16. There was my boyfriend and I and another couple. We didn't upgrade to privilege as we didn't think it was worth it. There was alot of good things about this resort but some poor things that I wouldn't return to the resort.Pros:the food is amazing! Never had an issue there. The Japanese a la cart was amazing as they put on a show. And for us that enjoy ceasers or clamato in general.. They had the real stuff! Not tomato juice!!! And they make an amazing sangria!! Always had an ocean breeze around the resort due to it being smaller. Friendly staff. At the bar by the one buffet they had water that you could just help yourself to which I thought was a great feature, definitely drank more water since it was so accessible. And Leo, our bartender for the week at the swim up bar was AMAZING!!! He always made sure our drinks were full and we were happy! The pool was great, it was really big to accommodate everyone, lots of kids but it's part of going to a family resort. Being in the gated community of Puerto adventeras was also a nice plus, there was tons of cute shops and restaurants, along with dolphins, sea lions and manatees that you could just watch if you didn't want to pay to swim with them. I always felt safe! Cons:We had room issues when we first arrived, 2 double beds when we requested a king. We had to suffer on the WORST beds I have ever slept on. It felt like I was sleeping on a concrete floor. On our third day we finally got moved to a king bed and this bed was SO much better. The sunbed/lounger situation was also TERRIBLE. You couldn't get one anywhere between the 2 resorts or beach unless you were up at 530am to reserve a chair. There were multiple people that would come by late afternoon and then take their towels after not even using the 4 to 6 loungers they claimed. I've never been to a resort where you couldn't get a lounger. The resort either needs more chairs.. or needs to enforce the "no towel reserving rule". It's first come first serve for a la carts which I didn't think would be a big deal but we ended up waiting over 2 hours when they told us one hour. So that was very frustrating. If they originally told us 2 hours we could've had a snack while waiting. I also think the beach area was garbage. The far left and far right hand sides of the resorts you could access the ocean but in the middle between both resorts there was a "boardwalk" like path that had no ocean access. There is also no late night food available, after the buffet closes at 1030pm there's nothing around to eat. Lastly, the theater is indoors and isn't open air. Our group personally didn't like the set up, so we never went to one show. There was no real nightlife If you are looking to get wild but that wasn't an issue for us. We all still had a great time and relaxed. Enjoyed all the food and drinks and the company. We met a lots of great people from around the globe. But as any individual we all have different preferences on what is important, and the things that I want in a vacation weren't 100% met at this resort. So because of that I personally wouldn't return.

Stayed at this resort Apr. 7-14/17 went with a girlfriend we had a great time it was very clean they could use new mattresses, took my own pillow. I like the fact that you did not have to reserve the al a carte restaurants just show up and we never had to wait. You can walk to the marina from this resort and we watched the dolphins & sea lions, and walked there a second time and had lunch. The room was very well cleaned even the public washrooms were clean. I will return to this resort and would recommend this resort it is small so you don't have a lot of walking, the only draw back was you could not walk the beach as it went no where. The creperier was great. I don't like the 2 tier system that you cant go to certain restaurants unless you are privileged

Fabulous holiday, great resort

we stayed from 5th to 19th April, with a group of other friends. We'd upgraded to the Riviera Maya hotel on the resort and our room was lovely, along with the added services (not necessary to make a great holiday but we enjoyed it). The staff at the hotel were very friendly, and standards are good. The odd small tip kept everyone happy and was appreciated by the staff. The food across the various restaurants was good - not always as hot as we would have liked but that's a consequence of mass catering more than anything else. Even the buffet restaurants have cook to order dishes - fresh fish, and meat - every night so always something fresh and different to choose. Sometimes, service in the formal restaurants (particularly BLoved) felt a little bit too slow but as we didn't have anything to rush for, it was our impatience that caused the problem really. Loved the fact that we could walk from the resort to the port, see the dolphins and visit some different bars - prices vary at them though - check them first. Useful to know that across the resort, US dollars are not accepted - cash payment is required in Pesos. Two slightly annoying 'issues':- firstly, we really struggled to get the restaurants to allow us to eat as a group of 11 people, generally being split into 2 smaller groups even in the buffet restaurants; secondly, by 7am in the morning, the fight for sunbeds was over, rather than just beginning. We never managed to get beds around the pools but could get them on the beach. Not sure how the hotels can solve this, so in the meantime, go with the flow and get up early (restaurants are open for coffee by then, or make one in your room and enjoy the tranquility of early mornings). Now for the downside - nothing to do with the hotel at all - so this is public advice , not criticism of the Catalonia properties or staff - do not take any notice of the fella that comes across the beach from the tent between Yucatan and the next hotel down. Carlos will tell you that he can get you a great price on any trip, supporting local business blah blah blah. Basically, he's a liar - we fell into the trap and ended up an on fishing boat, not the yacht he showed us photos of and promised us. "Mexico is flexico" he told us when we were negotiating on price - didn't expect his 'flexico' was with the truth. Put simply, hes a con man and a liar - hand over your cash at your peril. That said, we'll laugh about it now we are all home and it certainly didn't spoil our holiday. All in all, a great holiday, on a busy well-run resort, with a number of different nationalities (and therefore behaviours).

Great Resort-but bring extension cords!

We went to this resort in March and had a great time! The food at the a la cartes was very good, especially the Japanese and Tapas Restaurants. I really liked that the a la carte's didn't take reservations. No waking up at 7am to reserve your seats! The buffets had a good variety of food. All the staff were very friendly and attentive (we needed a cot in our room and it was brought up as soon as we checked in...and it was actually a full twin bed, not just a "cot") Our daughter LOVED the kids club! She never wanted to leave :) The staff at the kids club were awesome and so great with the kids and had lots of fun activities planned.I actually liked the fact that there were the big concrete breakers at the beach. There were a couple of days the ocean was really rough (red flag), but the beach was still calm enough to go swimming in, and also because of them there was great snorkeling right at the resort (they have equipment you can use to snorkel too!)My only con about the resort was that the rooms did not have enough storage or plugs! With 5 in our family sharing a room, we really didn't have anyplace to put clothes (lived out of our suitcases) and there were only 2 plugs in the whole room! I totally recommend bringing a power bar or extension cord if you have devices you want to plug in (or anything really...a shaver, hair straighter, etc)But all in all we had a wonderful trip!

Second visit and just as good!

First visited this resort in 2010 for my sister's wedding and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves then. Seven years later, we enjoyed ourselves again.Check in: we arrived around 8:15 pm and were given welcome drinks upon our arrival. Was lucky to get ahead of the rush checking in and was able to check in with little hassle. Because it was our 2nd time returning to this resort, we were given orange bracelets that allowed us entry to the Privilege restaurant (B-Loved) and Pure Chill Out Bar, which was a nice bonus.Room: I had requested a pool-view room on an upper floor and we were placed on the 3rd floor facing the Yucatan side of the pool - great. We had a Welcome Back sign on our door and were also presented with a little welcome basket of fruit and champagne, and a bottle of tequila and snacks - another nice touch. The standard garden-view room is basic but large and clean with a balcony, flat screen tv, 2 chairs and a table, a fridge with free bottles of water replenished daily, safe (no fee), and free wifi (which worked well most of the time). The bathroom has a tub with shampoo and gel dispensers (no conditioner), which is better than having to use and waste those little disposable containers. Water pressure and temperature were fine the whole time we were there. Bed was ok but the pillows are very flat. Our housekeeping lady was friendly, kept our place clean and always surprised us with different towel animals each day. We had issues with our safe a few times, but help was always provided promptly when requested.Property: This property is located in a gated complex in Puerto Aventuras. It's comprised of 2 resorts (Catalonia Yucatan and Catalonia Riviera Maya) and is a nice-sized resort in that it's completely walkable and not overly big, yet has lots to offer. There are many iguanas to be seen, as well as the odd agouti roaming around. We even saw a scorpion one night.Pools: There are 5 pools, including 2 swim up bars. Water is clean and refreshing compared to my last visit in the month of November when the water was freezing. Must be the hotter sun that has warmed up the pools. The pools were busy at times, but never an issue as there were multiple pools to choose from.Beach: Clean and safe for swimming and snorkelling. There are concrete blocks that break the surf now, which weren't there 7 years ago, but I guess these help to keep the water swimmable. Part of the beach going in is rocky so aqua socks are helpful, but there is a sandy part of the beach as well that you can enter from. The resort offers free use of snorkel equipment, kayaks, and even a catamaran ride, which is best to book early in the morning as it fills up quite quickly. The snorkelling is fun to do right off the beach and there are a variety of fish that can be seen. There is even a sheltered lagoon area where you can snorkel and kayak in.Pool/Beach Chairs: Yes, the comments from others are correct. If the resort is busy, good luck with finding lounge chairs after 8 am. Very frustrating to see all the chairs 'reserved' with no-one using them. No other options other than to use the chairs around the pool deck for eating. Even if you do find a lounge chair, be careful if you leave your chair for a short time as it may get swiped by others, which happened to us.Restaurants: Lots of eating options to choose from. 2 buffets (one air-conditioned, one outdoors), and 5 a la cartes plus an a la carte for Privileged. No reservations required - first come, first served. This is actually a nice feature as you go when you want, rather than having to wake up early to wait in line and reserve. There can be long waits, but if you go between 6-7 pm, you should be ok or you just do something else while you wait. We tried all the restaurants except for the Italian and they were all pretty good - the Japanese is a must. The steakhouse had insanely long waits and the hostess was not very friendly and seemed to want to push us away in fact, but we were able to get in right away one night when one of the servers said they would take us. Enjoyed a good meal, although my short rib was a little tough. B-Loved was a nice option for breakfast when we didn't feel like doing a buffet. With all the eateries around, one should be able to find something they like. Aside from the restaurants, there is a creperie hut by the pool, which is a hit serving sweet and salty crepes, banana splits and milkshakes, there is a food truck that serves good Catalonia dogs, and there is a natural juice bar that serves delicious, fresh juice drinks/smoothies. Coffee/tea/cookies are available by the pool on the Yucatan side during the afternoon when the buffets close after lunch.Bars: Lots of bars around serving drinks in glasses, rather than plastic throwaway cups. Drinks are good and service is fast.Entertainment: Didn't participate in the day entertainment, but there seemed to be lots going on at all times. Many kids/families at this resort so be prepared for much activity. The nightly entertainment in the theatre was well done, for a resort. There are many performers and the different shows require a lot of hard work and talent. There was lip-syncing during the different performances, but still enjoyable to watch for what it is.Sports Bar: For those wanting to do stuff at night other than drink or watch a show, there is a sports bar with various games to play for free - air hockey, ping pong, pool, foosball - and tvs to watch sports on a larger screen.Location/Other activities: Free use of bikes are a great way to check out the gated complex, other than by foot. If you're lucky, you may even spot monkeys while biking around the private residences in the complex. There is a marina 5 minutes away with shops, restaurants, and a Dolphin Discovery centre (with a Starbucks inside) where you can see dolphins, manatees, and sea lions outside. If you want to exchange money, there is a currency house in the marina that offers better rates than the resort. All in all - this is a great resort. Not one of those fancy 5 stars, but a solid and safe resort offering many services and amenities, a great location, friendly and hard-working staff, and good value overall.
