Our Opinion

Pleasant 4-star resort with friendly and attentive staff. The some parts of the beach might be a little rocky. However, there is a lagoon nearby that offers a better entry to the beach. This is a great place for those who want to discover sea life. The resort is well situated near to stores and the main Riviera strip.

Overview

This lively beachfront resort boasts fantastic services, facilities and amenities. Guests of the Catalonia will love the white sand and fresh water lagoon located adjacent to the hotel, a great place for small children to safely experience the sea.

Location: Directly on the beach, close to the Puerto Aventuras marina, approximately 15 minutes drive to Playa del Carmen, 60 minutes from the airport.

Highlights
  • Family friendly resort with plenty of activities
  • Great spa & fitness centre with waterfall and hydrotherapy pools
  • Located in the Puerto Aventuras resort area with shops and restaurants
  • A number of dining options
  • Free Wi-Fi

Great time

My wife and both said one our last day we'll be back next year. This is why.The staff. Super friendly and willing to help. The grounds. The groundskeepers start early keep it beautiful. At 5:30 am there is a guy raking the sand at the beach volleyball court.Beach area. Lots of beach lounge chairs, soft sand, and a beach bar with cold beer, wine, and mixed drinks. The ocean has rocks in it but not hard find an area go out in.The room. We had a standard room tv with some English channels, safe, hair dryer, lots of hot water. Don't drink tap water.Meals. Went to the Italian, Japanese, we good but the steak at the Bamboleo was the best.So if your into this sort of thing ruins the at Tulum are worth a visit. Take a hat and water its very hot there. Its a long walk to the ruins or take a tram for 2 dollars each way. We took it back. Your arm band in Playa Del Carman makes you look like a pork chop to the venders. Hey remember me I was your waiter the other night at the Catalonia. 14 times we heard that walking down 5th Ave. With that many in town whos at the hotel. Don't fall for it like the guy got us.

Enjoyable!

We enjoyed our stay very much! We had upgraded to privileged and enjoyed having access to the Beloved restaurant. It was delicious. We also enjoyed the Japanese, steak house and tapas a la carte. We didn't try the Italian and were a bit disappointed by the Mexican. The food there was the least flavourful that we had for the week. The buffets were good especially for breakfasts. They had a gluten free section. There was a hot dog cart and crepery that we also tried for lunches. Both were delightful and helped to break up buffet eating. We also had access to the 24 hour room service. We used it the night before we left. We did attend the Transat beach BBQ, which we would probably skip next time. You are seated at tables for six. For some groups that was not big enough and for a couple it didn't make for an intimate supper. That being said we did enjoy conversation with people from different parts of Canada. We found there to always be something going on if you wanted to join but also lots of chairs available both around the pools and at the beach. We loved the beaches, the sand was like powder. We also enjoyed the lagoon. This was the first time we stayed all inclusive and didn't do any excursions. Why would we? We were able to snorkel right at the resort and it was a short walk to go to the boardwalk and look at the yachts and watch the sea animals. There was lots of shops and restaurants if you wanted to give them a try. We did the free hydro circuit at the spa. It was a wonderful relaxing morning. Our room was clean and comfortable. We always had hot water and our fridge was always fully stocked. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful. They were always working hard to keep everything clean. We watched the shows at night and thought they were very well done. The wifi was great throughout the resort. Every couple nights people came in and set up tables of souvenirs. Every time we have been to Mexico we have purchased a finger painted tile and we were able to get this at the resort when they set up the booths. We were looking for warmth and relaxation and that is exactly what we got!

NOISE MORE NOISE AND EVEN MORE NOISE

The Yucatan Beach and Riviera Maya is basically the same hotel but with different lobby/reception areas. The layout of the buildings are based on Maya village style architecture with thatched roofs and the buildings are closely sited with limited views and even some balconies look out onto blank walls. We booked the Yucatan but our room 443 was located in Block B on the Riviera side top floor and the outlook from the balcony was at roof level from the buildings opposite.Although our privileged room was quite the whole complex outside was continually subject to loud club music around the pools and the privileged beach area. The bars outside and inside were subject to loud music from the morning untill late at night. Unlike the hotels we have stayed in there were no quite areas to have a drink and chat. Only the restaurants and the T Bar and sport bars were non smoking and the El Abuelo bar was subject to smoke drifting across from the smoking section because the separating wall was constructed of bamboo poles. Not a very pleasant place to have a drink with the noise and passive smoking. In Fact there was no place in the resort that was smoke free. Our large room was typical Mexican dark tiles and furniture plenty of wardrobe space and kept spotless by our friendly chamber maid. Like the rest of the staff in the resort they all gave a 5 star service. All the restaurants good food and very friendly service provided by the waiting staff. If you are privileged guest go to The B Loved Restaurant for breakfast. We complained about the loud music on several occasions but was ignored. It is such a shame that a very nice hotel is ruined by constant loud music. If you like constant music during the day and staying in a smokers zone this is the place for you.WE WILL NOT BE RETURNING TO THIS HOTEL AGAIN

Not so Privileged

Our 9:00am flight with Air Transat arrived at 1:30pm and after a few drop offs we didn’t arrive at the resort until 5:30pm. We are three seniors and booked two separate Privileged Ocean Front Rooms all on the same booking number for comfort which we paid a lot more for and we had our travel agent request two rooms close together followed by an email to the resort two weeks prior to our departure, needless to say we were put on two different floors. We were given a hard time at check in and were told there was no way they could change our rooms and if we didn’t like it we could go to the hotel across the street (very rude). When I said that I would be writing a letter to head office they told us that they could give us a room the next day which we agreed on. After all of that we get to our room, tired from a long day of traveling and realized that the room is right above a building which is a beach bar with very load music and if you’re on a floor lower that the 4th floor you have no ocean view. Not worth the extra cost! The Privileged rooms are big and have lots of storage space, the turndown service is very good and they give you lots of towels and water but turndown is only until the second last day and not on your last night. They provide you with a bathrobe and disposable slippers but make sure you don’t take the slippers home or they will charge you for them. Drinks at the bar are tasteless as they do not use the good quality alcohol unless you’re in the Exclusive Travel Club Section (time share) so being in the Privileged section doesn’t help. We asked for the real Baileys and were told we did not have the right color bracelet! We’ve been in The Mayan Riviera many times and there are lots of beautiful resorts and beaches, therefore we will not be going back to Catalonia Yucatan!Pictures: View from our 4th floor room and from the beach!
