Excellent resort for family vacation

We just come back from our vacation at Dreams Riviera Cancun in January 2017. Our kids are 6 and 3.5 y.o. The resort is perfect for a relaxing family vacation. Room: We booked a room with the plunge pool; my both kids claim that it was the best part of the vacation. We brought some floaters and bath toys from home that they used in the pool. The octagonal room was very spacious. We wish we had 2 queen beds instead of 2 full. Beach: There was some seaweed in the water, but the resort staff was trying to remove it from the sand. I wish there were more chairs and huts at the beach. We rented a Hobie Cat from the Beach Water Sports. If you would like to go sailing but have no experience, the instructor can come with you. Pools: Pool area was very clean and never felt crowded. The infinity pool is heated. The activity center by the entertainment pool has beach toys, balls and games. Tip: Sunscreen is available for sale at the towel center, but the selection is very limited: Banana Boat and Hawaiian Tropic. Food: There are 6 themed restaurants (Oceana, Seaside Grill, Portofino, Bordeaux, El Patio, Himitsu) and 2 buffets (World Café and Barefoot Grill). We tried all of them except Barefoot Grill; Oceana and Bordeaux were our favorite; Himitsu was the least favorite. The lobby of the World Café has dinner menus of all 6 themed restaurants on display. The only place that requires reservations is hibachi tables at Himitsu. Restaurants do get busy after 7:00 pm. Entrées are small but I prefer it this way, since I could have an appetizer, a main course and a dessert without feeling stuffed. You can always order 2 entrées if you like. Oceana and Seaside Grill took turns being closed for dinner; they are also closed in case of rain. World Café is a great option for breakfast, since you don’t have to wait for service. Fish and seafood dishes were better than meat across the board. Tip: Himitsu backs up to the World Café. So if you want to have some Asian food but your kids wouldn’t even try it like ours, get a table at Himitsu then sneak out of the back, go to World Café, get them whatever they would eat and bring it back to Himitsu. Explorer’s Club: We had an excellent experience with the Explorer’s Club for children. The club is kids ages 3 to 12 and parents are not allowed except for the “parents’ tour” at 9:00am. The list of special activities is published in the daily paper. My 6 y.o. enjoyed rock climbing and bungee jumping. Note that bungee jumping is a popular activity that isn’t available every day, thus the line was very long, so come early. My kids had fun camping at the beach one evening under supervision of Explorer’s Club staff while my husband and I enjoyed our dinner at Bordeaux (adults only restaurant). Gym: The gym is located above the spa. It’s a nice facility but a bit small. Come early if you want to take a spinning class; there are only 6 bikes. Eber, fitness instructor teaching spinning and abs classes, is fantastic! Yoga class by the beach was fun too. The gym could use more mats; when yoga and abs class were both at 8:00 am there weren’t enough mats for all participants. Spa: Dreams spa is expensive but very nice; e.g. 50 min massage $159-$199, manicure $55-$75, pedicure $65-$95. There are daily promotions for the spa; usually “book one treatment, get one for free”. The massage comes with one-hour long access to the spa including sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi, hydro massage, etc. We highly recommend the resort for families.

Good Value, Not for Couples without Kids

We stayed at the Dreams Riviera over New Years 2017. Overall, the hotel itself is beautiful and we were very pleasantly surprised by how nice the room was. Also the food in the specialty restaurants was incredible, especially the French restaurant. However, there were a couple of reasons as to why I didn't give this more than three stars. 1) My biggest complaint was the service. The level of service and attitude of the employees at the resort was not on par with how beautiful the property was. 2) Salsa & Guacamole - This was just unacceptable. When you are going on a trip to Mexico, one of the staples is salsa and guacamole. Chili's was better than this place (I attached a picture of the mess). 3) Another resort where people get up early and "reserve" seats by the pool and beach, and dont show up for hours. We're not allowed to use any of the reserved seats. Dreams says they have a policy of "30 minutes" but its not enforced4) Children - there are kids EVERYWHERE. Definitely not for a couple looking for a quiet relaxing trip. 5) Power - The power went out on NYE across the entire resort for about 3 hours6) Extra Fees: We were instructed to pay an additional $150 per person for the "special New Years Eve" celebration. We figured that this included admission to the ballroom seated dinner and concert. When we showed up at 8pm for the party, we were turned away. We went to the front desk and nobody could explain to us what the additional $$ was for that we had paid. This is where service comes back in, as they were quite rude to us. 7) Booking - They lost our reservation upon checking in. They stated that they cant always guarantee bookings made through third parties. This didnt make any sense to us as we booked directly through the Dreams website. Apparently you need to book through their ownership website (AMResorts or something like that). They were helpful though and were able to get us into a room. 8) Bathrooms - Dont hope for any privacy. The bathtub is open to the whole room and there are very thin walls to the WC. Hope that you dont get Montezuma's revenge because the entire resort will hear it. 9) Asian & Italian restaurants weren't that great. You had to make a special reservation to sit at the Teppenyaki tables which we found out too late, so we were shoved in a dark corner away from the fun. Also, skip the buffet place. Many times I saw kids picking up food with their fingers and then putting it back. It was flat out gross. Also, there is a dress code (no tank-tops boys). We were turned away at breakfast because we had sleeveless shirts. I was shocked because it looked like a Golden Corral and kids were running everywhere.Overall, the hotel was nice. We spent most of our evenings in the Lobby Bar as it had the nicest atmosphere, open late, and live music. Breakfast is best at the Seafood restaurant on the beach (we ended up going there everyday). The best part is that the bartenders pour heavy on the drinks. We probably wont stay there again, but it was a good experiment for us in the Cancun resorts area.

Beautiful!

We just returned from Celebrating our Anniversary and the staff brought us champagne, fruit and sang to us in the Restaurants! Our room was a king bed facing with ocean view, so when you woke up you were looking right at the ocean. We had a Jacuzzi tub inside and one on the balcony! This was amazing! We could watch the weddings and enjoy the ocean view. Food was great! The entertainment staff tried really hard to get some beach volleyball going. On the last day they gave me a gift as a thank you! This hotel goes above and beyond to meet your needs.

Good balance for an all inclusive, secluded if that's what you're looking for

Traveled in February 2016 during Valentine's day (several weddings to be expected). 10 minutes from Cancun airport, in the middle of nowhere (seems like), so if you expect to walk outside of the resort and enjoy the Cancun strip you will be disappointed. You will need to cab for 20 minutes to get close to civilization. Have 2 daughters (9,8), enjoyed the overall amenities but didn't care much about the kids club. Stayed in the preferred club area which gives you extra food flexibility and top shelf pours. Had no problem finding chairs at the pool or on the beach. Food was great and staff very helpful and going beyond what is typically expected from an all inclusive. I have been to 3x all inclusive over the last 2 years (cancun/puerto valarta area) and this is a better one for the price point.

Amazing!!!!

Dreams Maya CancunGood day all. We just returned from one week at this resort. There were 4 of us, my wife and I as well as our 3 and 8 year old sons. We rely a great deal on reviews when planning vacations so thought it would only be appropriate for us to write one on our experience. I will start with the bad, well really there was nothing truly bad about this resort or our vacation, but a couple of things to “watch for”. 1. When checking in we were told about “resort coupons” available from VIP Services. When we went to ask about these we were asked to “visit a sister resort for breakfast and a look around, and then come back and write a review and suggest it to others, when you get back you will have a $200 credit at the spa”. When we got there we were then informed it was in fact a 90 minute presentation for the “vacation club”. Again as mentioned prior we have a 3 year old and an 8 year old, so we politely declined and went back to our resort. On the up side it was not pushy and was the last we heard of it for our entire vacation. 2. There are two “hot tubs” on the resort, on the evening we arrived it was after 7:00pm before we got to our room and changed, so we went for dinner and they boys wanted to hop in the hot tubs. After we were in there for about 10 minutes security arrived and advised that kids were not allowed in the hot tubs. Unfortunately for the rest of the vacation we followed the rules but our boys were pretty sad to see this rule was not applied evenly as there were kids in there every day after. 3. There is a policy that people are not allowed to “reserve” beach chairs or beach beds with towels or personal items. This again is a rule that is not applied. When we would get to the pool area around 8:00am, most of the good chairs and all of the beds had been “claimed”. My suggestion, do what everyone else does and get out early and claim a good seat for the day. 4. This one is more of a personal preference but the bathroom in the room is “open concept” with a large jetted tub a shower, a large double vanity and a toilette. All very beautiful however the toilette simply has a large glass door (frosted in some areas) that is open at the top, bottom and sides. When traveling with older children or friends this could provide for some embarrassing times. Now for the good: 1. This resort was truly amazing, from a family that travels to a resort destination almost yearly, this was the best resort we have been to. Dreams has honestly thought of most of those little things that “would be nice”. a. Upon arriving at the hotel we were greeted with a cool moist towel, bell boys whisked in to grab our luggage and we were directed to the front desk to check in. we were provided with chilled Champaign and our boys fruit juice. Check in was smooth and easy. While we were checking in our bags were taken to our room, the directions we were given to our room were not the greatest but a nice walk all in all. b. The room was large; very clean and well appointed. c. The grounds were amazing and well maintained at all times. There are 3 pools; a shallow kid’s pool great for the young ones, an infinity pool that is “warmed” with an amazing view of the ocean, and an activity pool, very nice but quite cool when we were there. d. The food was plenty full and very good. In the main buffet please look for Manolo and Alberto. Two of the best wait staff ever, these two gents will go out of the way to ensure you are well taken care of. As well hostess Vanessa made the effort not only to remember our name but how to spell it as well (not an easy feat). We did go to seaside and Oceana a la carts twice each. Try the crab and cream cheese wontons as Oceana. e. The Explorers club was amazing. Whenever you leave your babies with anyone there is some apprehension, even our boys at first did not want to go, when we went back to get them they did not want to come with us. It was nice as most kids clubs are ages 4 and up this one is 3 and up. The ladies here are truly wonderful and it is obvious they truly enjoy what they do. There are activities planned out throughout the day and posted on the white board as well as on the resort app. Our kids loved the “Camp out” on the beach. f. We had the opportunity to go to the spa for a couple’s massage and the hydrotherapy circuit. It was very enjoyable, just make sure (like many other things in Mexico) to negotiate. I also hear there is a place just down the beach that does massages for quite a bit cheaper. Just remember you get what you pay for most of the time. g. Drinks were very good with many superior spirits available. Very good selections of rums, ryes, whiskies and tequila that is for sure. The CoCo Café was one of the absolute highlights for us. Here you will find many wonderful coffee drinks, smoothies, cakes, pastries, sandwiches, cookies and ice cream. The ladies here were great, always had a smile, even when they were overwhelmed with several people standing in Que. h. Rooms on the first floor have plunge pools and some with whirl pools as well on the balcony. These seemed quite under used, we very rarely seen anyone using them. We will try and book one of these next times. i. Wi-Fi and hotel app. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the resort (maximum of 3 devices per room). The resort has an app you can access to view thins such as activities throughout the day, restaurant menus etc. A very nice touch, again one of those “nice to haves”. j. All staff were super polite and willing to go the distance to make sure everyone has a great vacation. Please always remember no matter where you are “please and thank you” go a long way (a small tip does not hurt either). A general synopsis: this is an amazing resort and if you have the opportunity to visit here please do so, we are confident you will love it. Amazing resort for families. A huge thank you to the staff, they work so hard and long hours. The work they do did not go unappreciated.
