A little TOO quiet for us

Resort is very small with little or no nightlife, if you want to get away from it all, this is the place to go.The resort is a bit mismatched, it just does not flow, talking to staff and frequent visitors it has been extended over the years and it shows. The over water bungalows look beautiful, but are small internally and VERY expensive ($507 per night upgrade!) First the good points Lovely clean soft sand beachExcellent attentive staff (if you tip well!)Our room on top floor Superb Sea viewPremium drinks More mature traveller age groupVery quiet (mostly)Room service is excellent and the food is HOT! Plenty of beach/pool beds and cabanas. Excellent easy to access free WifiThe not so good pointsEven though there are signs everywhere saying you can't reserve cabanas/beds the whole second week four cabanas and 8 beds were reserved for a group who had rented out a whole block AND NEVER USED THEM!MONEY TALKS!It is an adult only resort BUT literally next door is a busy marina/tour rides etc, so unfortunately you get a few families with little children and babies walking 10 feet along to your part of the beach, putting their towels down and playing in the beautiful clear water in front of your beach bed every day with resulting screaming and shouting, you can get away from this by going into the resort but never really had this at any of the other 8 different mexican/Caribbean resorts we have visited. There are 5 restaurants but not all are open every day and you have to book early to get the best time slots, they are all ok, nothing special with the Asian being the only one we frequently visited. There is no outside bar at night apart from Club 24 which is behind the small pool bar, not meant to be anything but a pool bar and no atmosphere ( apparently there used to be entertainment here, but no longer) there are 2 inside bars, one above the gym and one above Limon restaurant, but they are inside and you could be at a bar anywhere! Hardly any sun on either of the two pools so water is very cold and can't really get a decent tan unless on beach or prepared to move to different pool locations as day goes by.On the second week we were upgraded to a top floor sea view room, fantastic view BUT no lift so 57 steps up and down, ok for us but not for all, aircon had to be fixed twice and required numerous calls and visits to concierge and main lobby until it was finally sorted (it took 6 trips just to get a set of working bathroom scales in our room!) I think we need to be a little more assertive! But we are British. All the lower three floors sea view is totally blocked by the palm trees.

Top notch vacation!

My fiancé and I came to El Dorado Maroma with another couple, friends of ours. The reviews about the food and the fact that it was a much smaller resort than we were used to is what drew us to this resort and we were not disappointed! Throughout our stay the food and service was exceptional. And not just great "for Mexico"...even to Canadian standards. Mushroom truffle risotto made fresh... need I say more?!? Our favourite restaurant was Kiyoko, the Asian one. It had a great selection of entrees as well as an amazing sushi menu. Mio, the Italian restaurant was a very close second. We also tried the Mexican, Caribbean and Peruvian restaurant (Lima limon) and greatly enjoyed them all. We were very surprised, however, given the stellar reviews we had read that Lima limon was actually our least favourite of them all. That being said they were all great. The service: We were very impressed with the level of service we received throughout our entire stay. The staff is very friendly, polite, and will often go out of their way to make your stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. Their English was also quite impressive, noticeably better than at other 5 star resorts we have been to. Rene, one of the bartenders at the main pool was a pleasure to meet and had a great sense of humour. We also had a great time on the kayak tour with Alex from the entertainment team. We would definitely recommend this tour. It was free, included a bit of snorkelling, and was only about 40 min long so it didn't take up too much of our relaxing day. Our concierge Alex was also helpful in setting up our reservations and answering any questions we had. Eli at the beach was constantly running around getting people set up with beach beds or cabanas, towels and whatever else you might need. He is a very hard worker. Other pros: The small size of the resort was very convenient. The drinks were very good. There were tons of options and lots of very interesting cocktails, some of which are made with fresh fruit. Premium liquor was included free of charge. Our room (honeymoon suite) was very big and was clean. Housekeeping also did a great job. The beach had very nice white sand that stayed cool. Room service is available free of charge 24 hours (however see below).Cons/areas for improvement:Room service was very inconsistent in terms of the quality of the food, and always took longer than quoted to arrive. The beach and pools could use more chairs/loungers. The beach did have a bad smell at times. The majority of the time it was not an issue but there were a few instances where the smell was quite strong and even wafted over to the pool area. All in all we had a fantastic trip and would definitely return. This isn't a cheap resort, but was worth the extra money for sure! The bar is now set very high for future Mexico vacations.

Fall vacation

We arrived at the resort and loved the small feeling. Very beautiful setting and landscaping. After a few days on the beach our towel guy Eli was the best to make sure we had chairs and towels each morning. The activities guy Alex was great at getting people to play volleyball daily and my husband played. Best bartender Renee was friendly and always made the best sangrias. Had to say that we had issues getting our mini bar in our room stocked daily. We had to call each night to room service to get it filled. Service at pool and beach out of this world. The food was also exceptional and loved the variety. All in all great people and beautiful resort.

Excellent Vacation

We travelled as a couple with another couple and had an all-around excellent trip. My fiancé and I have travelled to a few other 5 star all-inclusive resorts in Mexico and El Dorado Maroma was in a whole other league. We have previously always liked the food at other resorts, but here the food was exceptional and there is a surprisingly wide variety of food options, despite being a smaller resort. A big shout-out to the entire Entertainment Team (Jesus, Mimi, Alex, Daniel, Omar, DJ Chris) who did a great job with the activities during the week. We went on the kayak tour with Alex where you get to go out on kayaks and go snorkelling in the ocean where we saw fish, an eel and a starfish. Alex brought an underwater camera and emailed us our pictures afterwards (no additional charge), which was great and highly recommended! Eli on the beach was incredibly hard working and constantly running around in the morning setting up cabanas, making sure you had towels and anything else you needed. Our concierge Alex was also very good and made sure we had everything we needed and did a great job of remembering who we were. Rene at the main pool bar was great and had an awesome sense of humour and served up some amazing drinks! One overarching comment was that the resort staff spoke English much better than any other resort we’ve been to and certainly knew more than just the basics. Overall it was a relaxing trip and a lot of fun! We went in with high expectations since the resort was pricier than we were used to and it certainly exceeded our expectations! The one negative is that after our experience, it will make it hard for us to go back to other cheaper resorts because El Dorado Maroma certainly delivered and justified the difference in price!

Jewel in the Mayan Riviera

Looking for a quick getaway we chose this resort on a travel agents recommendation. Knowing very little about this resort we were most surprised by what we discovered. This beach and resort is like nothing we have seen in Mexico before. Gorgeous white sand beach, stylish, modern, comfortable accommodations with many dining options serving food amazingly good for an all-inclusive plan. The staff did everything possible to help us enjoy our experience. We were particularly impressed the friendliness and helpfulness toward us from Alex,Mimi and Leonardo. We we told that the vast majority of visitors are return guests. Sure is easy to see why.
