Our Opinion

A very unique 5-star hotel. The Mayakoba steps away from the conventional resort setting, situating near the forest portion of the resort grounds, rather than the beach. While it does divert from the usual resort scenery, many applaud the beautiful grounds. The resort has excellent guest services and great food. This is the perfect destination for those who are looking for a unique getaway to the Riviera Maya.

Great overall

Stayed at this property over the Xmas holidays and New Years.Great resort, service was outstanding. They can definitely use some more bikes to make travelling around the property easier. We were fortunate to have Ricardo as our Butler who was unreal and literally made our vacation great. He arranged Chasies daily, dinner reservations both on and off property, and also arranged excursions. For a family resort it offers it all and if you can arrange to get Ricardo you will have an amazing stay.

Beyond My Expectations

I have been to different parts of Mexico on numerous occasions and have always had a wonderful time. It was especially enjoyable in my younger years, when countless hours in the sun and endless margaritas didn’t leave such a lasting effect. When my family planned a trip to Mayakoba, I assumed it would be the same type of “party” environment I was used to. Upon arriving at The Fairmont Mayakboba, I was more than a little shocked that it was completely opposite to my expectations. The hotel setting felt as though we were in the jungles of Malaysia. It was absolutely beautiful, with endless wildlife sightings (monkeys included), serene rivers, beautiful nature trails and a multitude of pool options amongst the property. In addition to the tranquil setting, the staff were always more than accommodating. However, the best staff member at the hotel was, without question, Ricardo, our Butler. He was the most professional, accommodating and friendly person I have ever dealt with in a hotel setting and he made the trip 10 times better for everyone. He booked us excursions to the local Cenotes, arranged our daily transportation, arranged breakfast buffets in our room, made dinner reservations each night, coordinated a romantic surprise getaway for our in-laws and even surprised us with party hats and blowers for New Years Eve. Even after all our incessant requests, he never once did anything without a smile. He was the absolutely cherry on top to a perfect vacation at a magical resort! If you have the opportunity to select a butler, you MUST request Ricardo. He is the best of the best!

Beautiful property, service is lacking though...

To call this a 5 star property is wrong. They have the shell of a 5 star property, beautiful, exclusive feeling grounds, comfortable rooms, plenty of amenities etc. However, I was honestly appalled by the restaurant service at both their main casual dining spot - La Laguna -- and their pool/beach waitstaff. And, I refuse to "blame' their local staff for the shortcomings... I blame fairmont, which clearly does not have a training program that prepares their waitstaff to offer the first class service that should be expected at a property at this price-point. And, I swear, I'm not a snob, but it really stood out for us. At breakfast each morning, it felt like it was their first time at the rodeo. There was a line out the door waiting for tables (hostesses seemed overwhelmed and moved slowly with seating), the waitstaff seemed overwhelmed and were incredibly neglectful of tables. It was so surprising because they do this breakfast EVERY morning? Yet, it all seemed disorganized and like they didn't know what they were doing. One morning we opted out of the buffet and asked for oatmeal, 30 minutes later it still had not arrived and we were going to be late for a tour we had booked. I had to get up and look for our waiter to ask about the food and stress again that we had been waiting a long time. Another morning, I had a bus boy come over with coffee, start to pour and then say, you want decaf... something you typically ask before you start pouring. NO, I DIDNT WANT DECAF. It was all just so strange and out of place for a resort that in all other respects is so high quality. Additionally, I was surprised by the lack of service at the adults only pool... one would think that this area would be a prime spot for drink and food orders, but it felt really hard to flag down someone to take an order. Further, when I did, we waited over 45 minutes to get an order of guac and chips, and when I tried to ask where they were, the server literally walked away from me. I had to chase after him and forcefully ask to check on our order. I did not even receive an apology. Now, we did eat at Brisas restaurant one night, and the service there was much better. The waiters clearly know what they are doing, so it's not all the restaurants. However, Fairmont Mayakoba may want to figure out what is going on with La Laguna/ pool servers because it definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. Take a page from the Ritz and spend more time training your employees and helping them understand the fundamentals of customer service. One other thing, there is a lack of water around the resort.... again for a resort at this price-point some ice cold infused water would go along way at the pool areas, rather than nickle and diming us on bottle water (Ritz and Hyatt both do this).

Very nice resort. Friendly service and comfortable accommodations. David Lozano was our butler and totally spoiled us. Thank you Alphonso for making the girls feel like angels. Weather forecast was not great the week were there but every day had long periods of nice weather. If it's windy at the beach, the pool area is nicely sheltered. Staff at Las Brisas was super kind. We will go back someday.

Tranquil and service oriented

Stayed in a beach area casita at this lovely resort between Cancun and tulum. It's a large property with lots of choices for accommodations. We chose a beach area casita. It's on a canal but has more privacy than the beach front. Comes with a butler who truly manages everything from getting chairs set out for you to tours, dinner reservations and in room amenities. David was so responsive (text) and a pleasure. All the staff were great. Golf carts shuttle you around quickly. The spa was lovely and the food excellent. We ate at all three main dining areas and each was delightful. The rooms are well appointed, clean and have nice touches like reading lights. Truly an exceptional property.
