Concierge

We take a girls trip every year. Each year we visit a different resort. At Generations it was the first time we were assigned our own concierge. Louis was amazing! Very professional! Very helpful! I totally recommend a trip to visit Louis...and the beautiful surroundings of this resort!!

Great Service

We were here for fall break with my daughter, brother and his wife and daughter. The resort is beautiful, with infinity pools off the balcony leading to the main pool that had bar & seats in the water, which was so amazing. The rooms were absolutely beautifully designed, with large bathrooms and spacious area. My brother and his wife are members, so I'm not quite sure what upgrades they got for the room. The only downfall of the rooms was the moisture from the heat outside and the cool air inside. Even thought the staff stated to keep the balcony door close to prevent moisture, it still happen and it completely grossed me out. Everything was damp, even the sheets!! The all inclusive food was okay, but definitely wasn't my favorite. My sister-in-law had a little mold on her raspberry dessert, which the staff was completely apologetic and gave a very nice (free) bottle of wine. Speaking of the staff, they were absolutely amazing. They played games with us outside in the pool, they taught a fun sushi making class, and offer nightly shows. They greeted us with a smile everyday and did everything to make us happy. The all inclusive alcohol was a plus too. Their beach has beautiful cabanas to lay on with service from the staff as well. The ocean had some sand stones or something to that nature, in the water that was kind of unattractive, plus the shallow beach was extremely rock and hard to walk out. In conclusion it was a great trip, but I do want to try other resorts from Karisma.

Amazing and Relaxing

This all inclusive resort is an excellent choice for families or couples. The food is totally gourmet as advertised and the rooms are large and updated. The entire resort is clean and fresh. The service staff is top notch. I really cant say enough good things about Generations Riviera Maya. Guests also have access to the adjacent Karisma property which has exclusive restaurants, shows and pools. I can't wait to go back!

Very Nice Place

Overall we found this resort to be excellent, with only a few minor issues that the staff took care of in a timely manor. Claudia was our main contact and did an excellent job of taking care of everything. Our personal butler Luiz was fantastic as well as others (sorry don't have all the names, but they were great). Very friendly! Food and drink options were top class all the way! After one day we told Claudia about our concern of virtually no sun at our suite, 30 minutes later we were relocated to another room which provided lots of sun. Wish it would have been a few degrees warmer, would have used the pool more.

Aside from a few wrinkles, a great place for families

We stayed here last winter, but I just found my detailed notes and am posting now. If I say something that is really important to you, you might want to search through recent reviews to see if things have changed. We chose Generations primarily because they had by far one of the largest hotel room types in the Riviera, much larger than a standard hotel room. We had a 3-year-old with us who we wanted to sleep in a different room than us. Generations was one of the only area hotel options with this feature, and it worked perfectly. My wife and I had a very spacious bedroom, and our daughter slept in a roll-out crib in an equally spacious living/dining room. The only drawbacks of the room were the lighting was a little dark, and, despite having a very large kitchen/dining room space, there were no dishes or silverware to use. (Not that we ever had a desire to cook our own meal.) The free wifi met our needs, but if you’re planning on doing a lot of data-intensive work, you might need to upgrade to the pay plan. Butlers and housekeeping was very good, even if the evening turndown service was a tad spotty. All of the first-floor rooms have the swim-out rooms; the second, third, and fourth-floor rooms have the infinity pool; and the top floor has no pool. Counter-intuitively, I think the top floors may actually be the best room type, as they have the best views of the ocean. The infinity pools always felt cold (because the balconies blocked the sunlight), and the swimout rooms have an even more limited view. If you know you’re going to want to swim right out of your room, then a lower floor may be a better option; but if you’d prefer a better view, you might want to stay higher. Speaking of pools, one of our biggest complaints was the water temperature. I’m sure it’s not an issue in the warmer months, but with no heater and limited sun access, the pool was always cold. (No hot tubs either.) Hopefully by now management is aware of the numerous complaints of the water temperature and is investing in a heating system—even a partial one would help. The beach is by no means the best beach in Mexico: it is narrow, very rocky, and there is a large and unsightly concrete reef just a few feet into the ocean. Not great for swimming, but fine if you just want to take a dip. The pictures tell the story if this is important to you. We didn’t see any seaweed while there. The cabanas and cabana service was very nice, and there was plenty of availability. They have complimentary kayaking, which was enjoyable. I’m not going to complain about the free snorkeling offered, but if you want to see any real coral/fish, you’ll need to buy an excursion and take a boat out to a reef. There’s a gym that I would call “adequate” but about 3-5 miles of very scenic walking/jogging trails along the beach and through the forest. The food and (top-shelf) drink was excellent. The dinner portions served in the restaurants were very small, but we often ordered multiple dishes at the same time, which was not a problem. Having stayed for a little over a week, the rotation of 4 restaurants did get a little repetitive, esp since each of the restaurants is closed one night a week (which is not well-advertised). There are a lot more dining options available next door at El Dorado—as long as you don’t bring kids. I thought the breakfast/lunch buffet was outstanding, one of the best resort buffets I’ve experienced. Given what I said about the lack of restaurants, I wish they could open the buffet for dinner. (I think they keep that room free at night for wedding receptions.) We tried the free room service a couple of times, and that was very well prepared. In the restaurants, wait service was inconsistent at times; a few of our meals were a bit on the slow side, but tolerable. And while I realize we our guests in a Spanish-speaking country, some of the waitstaff’s English was not quite fluent, which could be a problem if you have specific requests. It would have been nice to have had a few more varieties of wine available in the all-inclusive portion. To summarize, my quibbles with the dining and drink are all very minor, and we thought this was one of the best parts of the experience. The kids’ club was great. The staff here was really dedicated, and they had a huge variety of games and toys. There is a minimum age (4 I believe), and if your kid is any younger than that, you have to stay with them. Also, the kids club is closed from like 5-7, which unfortunately is during most people’s dinner time. I thought the nighttime entertainment shows was one of the most underrated aspects of the resort. A number of the shows were really impressive, almost at the caliber of a cruise ship. However, there is only one show (8pm while we were there) that lasts about an hour, and after that the only real entertainment is the inside bar (which was frequently pretty empty). There is a beautiful rooftop terrace with 360-degree views of everything which I feel was largely wasted, as nothing takes place up there except for an occasional wedding or private party. It would be great if they used that more often. My other suggestion would be to have a bit more communication of entertainment events (e.g., what show is tonight and what time?), and days when each of the restaurants is closed. It would be great if they could publish a daily calendar of events and activities, like what cruise ships put in your room each day. One other complaint that probably won’t be applicable to many readers, but we had a snowstorm back home that cancelled multiple return flights, forcing us to extend our stay by several days. I think they could have done a little more to help us out with a reduced distress rate for these additional days, especially since they definitely were not at full capacity. The people at the front desk did everything they could to help, but their hands were tied by management. Overall, a great stay with mainly positive comments. A few minor complaints that held me back from giving 5 stars.
