Our Opinion

Located in the middle of the resort, Grand Bahia Principe Coba has better amenities than the other two Bahia Principe properties but is about a 10-15 minute walk to the beach, however, trams run throughout the property. A great pool area and clubhouse with Internet access. It has its own buffet restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Also check out the sister resorts next door, Grand Bahia Principe Akumal and Grand Bahia Principe Tulum.

Overview

Beautiful Resort

We stayed a week at Coba after getting a cheap deal with first choice. We had a incredibly long wait through customs when we arrived in Mexico around 2hours. It was then an 1 and half hours trip to the hotel. We had a fantastic week couldn't fault the resort at all. Clean spacious rooms with a mini bar which is restocked daily. We mainly stayed at our hotel pool which had my favourite place the pool bar. Games and aqua aerobics were on all day. Drinks were all branded and we got served easily. It had incredible wildlife all around and animals that I hadn't seen before. The food in the buffet was ok but a bit cold. The snack bar by the pool was really nice hot and fresh with salads, chicken wings, ribs and burgers. The sea was so clear and warm and you can see the fish swim around your feet. They have dolphins next to beach but were in a rather small pool which I didn't like. Didn't watch any entertainment too tired from all day in the sun. We ate at three restaurants only liked the Brazilian one though. Also at the end of the week we found the market which has loads of gifts and souvenirs . Remember you have to pay around $55 usd each to get out of the country remember to save this for your home trip.

Overall happy but not sure if will return...

We are traveling all over the world and i think Mexico is one of the best destination for families w/kids. This was our 2nd time in MEXICO, 1st in GB Coba.+SHUTTLE to the hotel. We got Cancun transfer. We got van for ourself(4). Very nice service and on time both way. Booked online a week ahead.Paid in cash when arrived. It took aprx 1.2 h to the hotel but all attraction are 10-30 min away .-CHECK IN- arrived after 9pm with my printed voucher. The baggage was taken to be delivered separately (?) and i went to book ala'carte. The booking took over 30min but got all we wanted. Then we went to the room and we had to call 10 mins later for our bags as they did not arrived yet. 2 days later i was asked (in writing)to provide the booking voucher again as they... lost it??? Went on the evening to print it at HR (again wait) but the system was down so had to go another day. + SHUTTLES plenty around the resorts, easy to find and get familiar with. Always ask as they might take you to your destination even if this is not their route. We enjoyed the rides !+ROOMS :spacious, we got 4 beds (incl.thin covered sofa) for 4 of us. Clean (except the balcony). But on the 2nd floor so we had to carry the stroller & sleeping child on the evenings. We asked twice for exchange (upon arrival and the next day)but was informed no rooms available.Plenty towels.Hydro-massage tub. Comfy beds. But no restocking on tee and water. We asked our room to be clean each second day so after 2 times our NO DISTURB card disappear.-COBA BEACH safe but small and rocky.Must take the tram from lobby (aprx 7 min ride).Always fun (especially for kids) to take the rides and meet new people. Small drink bar available (twice saying sorry for not having ice ! and bananas ), did not notice any food there. You are allowed to use TULUM BEACH (nicer, bigger) and AKUMAL BEACH (no drinks or food allowed for Coba & Tulum residents). We usually used Akumal because of nicer area, not so rocky and great for snorkeling ..especially plenty of fishes next to the wooden decks. As mentioned before not allowed to eat/drink there and they refused to give non alcoholic juice for child too.+NET : starting Nov1 free in Lobby , worked also in Buffet. -PC SERVICE: Printing, net service only through HR Service Desk next to the Reception. Must sent them an email to get it printed ;-( No computer desk for your own use.+/- POOLS: very nice, clean but cold; jacuzzi very poor power. Good entertainment, towels in/out till 6pm only. 1 exchange a day ! KIDS pool was very nice but freezing water, also many kids got bleedy scratches from under slides concrete bottom. They should put rubber mats under the slide. My 5y son after having 2 in 1 day did not wanted to go again at all. My daughter got plenty but 8 y and did not complained too much. Some other kids did not wanted to go for the same reason. We ended up on the beach most of the time.+FOOD: 4/5: lukewarm; microwaves available if you are really needing things hot, variety (we even found rabbit meat once) plenty of fish dishes (incl.salmon-very good),sushi bar, grill bar (ny steak going fast and not always available), shrimps very limited unless mix with other;soups ( i love) did not like/enjoy there at all. Thank you RUDOLFO and ELBA for superb service in the buffet. VERY polite, smiling, understanding english and kind for kids.+A'LA CARTE we got 5 for 11 nights Reserved all right away upon arrival. The buffet options were so good that we actually ended eating at 2 only : PESCADOR -SEAFOOD :salmon was better in TULUM buffet and shrimps were tasteless and overcooked. La TORTUGA -BRAZILIAN was great but waited 35 min for first served meat...service was super.-HOT DRINKS the coffee, water steaming hot offered in lobby till 11pm ONLY (they are taking it away !!!!) the capucinno/coffe machine in lobby often not working, also covered after 11pm which was ridiculous for me. After 11pm coffee, tea available only in 1 snack bar in whole resort. Coffee maker available at room, but they did not restock the tea or water at all.I was always taking some from lobby..great variety !-TRIPS OUT; many offered on site but found more expensive than booked directly else. DOLPHIN DISCOVERY 10 min ride from GBahia , booked via chat, free transport almost half price cheaper(if booked 4 days advanced) than GB. XCARET or XELHA check web promotion, usually the same price.. we got cheaper $27 p/p cause black friday. The same bus with others who bought from hotel. NO TOWELS INCL. MUST take from HOTEL or pay $3p/t+deposit! Buy waterproof case in Hotel $19 versus $29 in the PARK. +ENTERTAINMENT.... free bike (1h) and tennis next to Hacienda. Nice shows at 9pm. The 8pm shows for kids could be better, bad lip sync (Frozen-Elsa was terrible , my 8 y old was disappointed) -KIDS CLUB : big disappointing for me. No clear schedule when/what. Did not smell nice inside, but looks clean. Trampoline was nice. I left my son twice(almost 1h each), 1st time i stayed with him and 2nd time with his older sister. One time there was only 1 girl Martha for 11 kids and she did not speak english at all. One 6y old translated for us.She was very nice but she took the kids around the pool and she did not look behind. I was near by all the time and i was getting the kids who were left far behind her vision. This is unacceptable for me.+GROUNDS: beautiful! Wild animals (raccoons, iguanas, agouti) around to make pictures with- do not feed or come to close. Kids enjoyed them very much, lots of fun and pics..+CHECK OUT is at 12, they charge extra for each hour. Reserve your shuttle (room-lobby)15 min in advance. You will get slip from checking out which you need to give to the luggage boy. The luggages are marked and left in the lobby or in front of the hotel.I felt safe with this service. These people are hard workers and tipping is always nice. Usually had very good service.Overall happy as there is plenty to see and do at the Hotels ..not sure if return again.

Great place!

Big resort, with lots of services and plenty of room at the pools, which were designed to keep the little ones at the water playground away from the big ones at the swim-up pool bars. Room was large and clean, and fridge was stocked daily. Buffet had something for everyone, and the food was standard fare. We took advantage of our a la carte meals and all three were excellent. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Our only complaint was the limited wifi area available - it was hard to stay in contact with the people in our group.

If you want to waste your money.

Privilege Club Issues: - Only a moderately higher level of service;- The check-in was done by a person who barely knew the resort;- Slow response and long waits for privilege club golf carts. In some cases, the cart doesn't even show up. - Privileged beach is very busy and difficult to get a good spot. - Slow drink service at the privileged beach even with tipping. - Trying to deal with the privilege club people was an unpleasant experience 80% of the time. They are very argumentative and take no accountability for the terrible service and do very little to improve the situation. They are absolutely passive aggressive in how they treat guests. - Lack of follow-up on reasonable requests. The Resort:- Very busy and crowded everywhere.- Tipping and friendliness with workers does not equal better service. - If you want to get sick during your trip, order room service. - Coba buffet is a joke. At breakfast, it doesn't matter what time you arrive, things are picked over and you need to wait 10-15min for the next wave of fresh food. - Lineups at the Coba buffet for omelettes and pastas are 8-10 people deep at any given time. - The quality and selections of food at both the Coba snack bar and buffet was much lower compared to Akumal, Tulum, and Sian Kaan.- It was like pulling teeth to get extra bottled water and mini fridge replenished. - Bed sheets never changed.- Air conditioning in the room worked about 20% of the time. - No hand rails on the stair cases. - Being nice will get you nowhere. - Restaurants close at 10:30am and "24hr" snack bar opens at 11:00am. So if sleep in and want to eat a late breakfast, you get to wait until 11:00am for lunch food at the snack bar.- The wristband concept is not something that you see at actually good resorts. Pros: - If you whine enough, you will get some level of action. - The weather was nice. - There are some nice people but very few and far between.Bottom line:I will never be staying at this property. It was a definite waste of money and it's too bad you can't get a refund on this type of thing as it's clear that Grand Bahia Principe is in breach of the contract and certainly failed in delivering the service they agreed to provide. This is a 3 star property at best. Unless you have very low standards for your comfort on your vacation, I do not recommend wasting your time/money in visiting this resort.

Not as good as the previous times

We stayed at the COBA from Nov 27 – Dec 04. This was my 10th visit to the Grand Bahia Principe. It appears the upper management personnel has changed and implemented a few new policies. Previously, management acknowledge and showed their appreciation for repeat guest by giving them a bottle of champagne and a fruit basket in the room upon arrival. Without notifying their guests, they changed the policy to 11 times as repeat guest in order to receive them. It was an unexpected disappointment to start my vacation. On a positive note, there is now free 24 hour WiFi in the lobby instead of the 1 hour previously provided.Reception / Check InThis year, the front desk staff was incompetent. It appears that they have very poor communication among themselves and some of the front desk staff have challenges grasping or understanding the English language. I had an issue that required me to engage the people at the reception desk. I spoke with 5 different people and received 5 different answers. A La Carts RestaurantsThe a la carts book up quickly so I strongly suggest that you make the reservations after you have checked in, as you might not get the restaurant or time you want. In my case after immediately checking in, I discovered the only available times available were at 5:00 or 10:00 pm. This was totally unacceptable, and I had to get management to intervene. The COBA can offer you 7 a la cart restaurants for the week instead of 3, however, if you don’t mind being forced feed at 5pm or risking indigestion eating at 10:00 pm, the a la cart options are totally useless. The system needs an improvement.Resort GroundsThis place is huge but not as big as everybody makes it out to be. There are trolleys to take you around to everywhere you need to go. The resort grounds were spotless, manicured even, the groundskeepers worked tirelessly. The COBA is family friendly resort with the kid pools, kids club, and mini water park.RoomI personally don’t put too much emphasis on the size of the room as I only use it to sleep and shower. What I’m looking for is that the bed is hard, decent pillows, the room is clean and has decent water pressure, and the room met all my criteria. In the room there was a flat screen TV as well as a coffee maker, an iron & ironing board and a fridge that was stocked every day, with beer water and soft drinks. The daily maid service was not very good and lacked monitoring some basic details to the necessities. At one point we ran out of toilet paper. Food The resort does a good job appealing to an eclectic clientele with various tastes, even the pickiest eater should be able to find something to eat. The only negative I have is the buffet staff need to be more vigilant and replenish the more popular or in demand food before it runs out. They need to be more proactive rather than reactive. Client ServiceWe had an occasion to see the guest service manager Mr. Faouzi, who was very helpful and professional and cleared up our problem where the previous manager Oscar provided little satisfaction. I can’t speak highly enough of Mr. Faouzi, and it was Mr. Faouzi actions that prevented a disappointing vacation. The COBA would stand to benefit with more managers like him. The waiter and waitress provided excellent service, even the tram drivers bend over backwards to help you and take you wherever you need to go or explain how to get there. The only negative, commentI have is about the wakeup call service. Like the sitcom Seinfeld and his experience with car rental, they know how to take the request for a wakeup call, however, they don’t know how to keep it. This happened to me 2 years in a row. Luckily, my wife sets her own alarm, otherwise, we would have missed our flight back home.PoolsThere are 2 pools. An activity pool where you have the animation team and activities, and a quite pool. If you want shade you need to get a spot by 10:00 am, but it's not bad as there were plenty of chairs.EntertainmentThe animation staff were all very friendly, outgoing and helpful. There are night shows starting at 9:00pm and don’t expect a Vegas caliber production, however, still very entertaining and good. My wife and I enjoyed the Michael Jackson dance show and a Magic show. It was the Entertainment and Animation teams that really made my stay enjoyable. They are truly amazing, hardworking, kind-hearted group of people will make you laugh, dance, participate in activities.
