Our Opinion

Located in the middle of the resort, Grand Bahia Principe Coba has better amenities than the other two Bahia Principe properties but is about a 10-15 minute walk to the beach, however, trams run throughout the property. A great pool area and clubhouse with Internet access. It has its own buffet restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Also check out the sister resorts next door, Grand Bahia Principe Akumal and Grand Bahia Principe Tulum.

Overview
The Grand Bahia Principe Coba is an oasis in which to unwind. Rejuvenate yourself mentally and physically, surrounded by crystal-clear waters and a sandy white beach. A self-contained resort complete with spa, shops, piano bar, sports bar and a disco, Grand Bahia Principe Coba is located behind Grand Bahia Principe Akumal in the beautiful Riviera Maya.

Location: Next to Grand Bahia Principe Akumal, 35 min to Playa del Carmen, 20 min from the Mayan Ruins at Tulum, 90 min from the Cancun airport.

Great destination.. but....

First visit to this property, we travel to resorts frequently. Was super impressed with the service, Everything was top notch from Bar service, Maid, front desk. Very clean resort. Pluses.. they did not charge us for safe.. perhaps because we checked in thru Premier lobby. We were there 4 nights and got two Ala Carte choices. The place is handicapped accessibleCoffee 24/7 in one snack bar and early coffee in lobby at 7amSmoking not allowed in restaurants and buffets, but out in open air okay.Pools very clean, rooms kept very clean, the whole place was spotless.Trams ran everywhere all the time except when you wanted one.. that's the way it is, honestly figuring out tram routes and schedules was a bit difficult but all the tram drivers were very helpful..Food in buffets was good, pretty typical but more choices than most, especially for kids. Lots of deserts, ice cream etc.Great mix of people from all over, US, Canada, EuropeNegatives.. yet amusingHaving a drunk trying his key in your room for 15 minutes at 1 am... confronting him and he tries to push in and won't go away, even when you threaten bodily harm.. calling security while holding the broken phone line into outlet, Two Security men arrive on scooter 10 minutes later, drunk is gone, wondering how two smaller locals would deal with a big drunk obnoxious Canadian, never got to find out.Having your wife hit the switch on the Jacuzzi in the bathroom and the switch sticks and spray down the entire bathroom with bath water.Going to La Gourmet which everyone posted they loved... Wife trying to discretely spit out a piece of lamb that was inedible and me getting served Chicken when I ordered Duck. Not so bad but by the time the waiter checked on us it was getting too late to correct things.. I honestly think they may have been out of duck and thought I wouldn't notice. Very slow to fill wine and water glass. We went to portofino's and it was great although at the 10pm seating the appetizer buffet was very picked over.Kids... everywhere.. I thought I was at Disney sometimes. I like kids but dodging them at the buffet and in the lobby was a bit much.Quick trip to casino wife played a little slots, you put money on a card and cash in when you win.. Wife stopped about 350 pesos up and when we cashed out they actually TAX you on your winnings.. I think it was around 6%.TipsBring small extension cord with multiple plug ins, there are only about 4 outlets in a room and they are used by lamp, alarm clock, hair dryer.. if you have a couple devices to charge can be trouble.Use Premier lobby.. much quieter, wifi is faster because there are not 300 people logged in there and fewer kids. Breakfast buffet was less crowded although selection was a bit smaller.Even though this resort is Huge we found quick routes to the parts we enjoyed not difficult at all.

Great resort!

We came here at the start of November for my partners 30th. I booked very last minute and was apprehensive of our stay as I wasn't won by what I had seen online. However it was last minute and seemed to be the best option for our price range. It was absolutely amazing! I would highly recommend it and if anyone is leaning on the fence like I was, just book it!The rooms are nice, everything looked just like the photos. The pools are nice, only one pool with an actual pool bar, where we spent most of our time. But it made for a fun pool. The adult only pools are like three little whirl pools in a pool, with a bar you then walk to. They were great too, to get away from kids. The resort did have quite a few kids, however once the kids water park reopened after repairs you saw a lot less. The alcohol used are all good brands and the service is great. Everyone was very friendly. We had a premium room and the gold lobby. We were dropped off at the main lobby. When we were checking in we instantly were served drinks, and then when they realised we were at the wrong lobby they were very apologetic, got us on a buggy which then took us to our lobby. Where we were then served straight away with more drinks and some snacks. Everyone was sooo friendly. I've been to Cancun before and did not have service anything like this. Everyone went out of their way to help you. It was great. We also had a couples massage, which was the best I've had in Mexico. Again, very friendly. The beach was very clean, I never saw any seaweed and the wave breakers, though ugly, were great as without them it wouldn't be enjoyable to swim at the beach. There was so much to do here, from seeing the dolphins, to free water activities, to the activity team which would have games likes ping pong and bingo etc at the main pool all day. There's also a theatre that has a show on every night, which we loved! Also there's a lot of onsite shopping, so you don't need to worry about forgetting things. The people selling time shares only stayed in a small part of the lobby. And didn't harass you. If you said no or kept walking they would leave you alone. Which was great, unlike other places. I would recommend the Segway tour. It takes you all around the four parts of the resort and the guy teaching it is great! The food is also great, buffet is awesome! I was a little sad my the Mexican restaurant though. Didn't have all that many typical Mexican meals and what we got wasn't that great. Also the buffet didn't have many Mexican options which was disappointing. Lots of seafood though! Apart from that only downside to this place is that 7 days just wasn't enough to do everything as there was so much to do!Would definitely go back and recommend to a friend.

Resort OK, check in POOR, service acceptable

Check in was VERY POOR. Room was not ready at 8:30 pm so they sent us to the buffet for dinner by shuttle without a map or any direction to get back to the lobby. Finally checked in with a key & an empty envelope, no map, no towel cards, no resort information, just take it and go away. Later went to different lobby to get map, only one available is so small it is unreadable. Next days I saw other guests with larger, readable maps.Kukulcan buffet is fine (routine) with some excellent staff and many just putting in their day. Portofino a la carte restaurant has a fantastic Naples fillet and good gorgonzola chicken (good waiters). Mikado Japanese is really good food and chef was great for cooking & entertainment ability.Pool bar line ups varied from 5 to 15 people due to single server on every day we were at the pool. Beach is a shuttle ride from the Coba to either other resort.Rooms were typical 3rd world with plug ins hanging out of the wall, lights that were so loose you turned them on by wiggling them. Clean and fresh rooms made up each morning! Two beds only ¾ size each, not even doubles for us so we slept separately. We did not have kids with us but the resort seems very kid friendly with separate fun pool, kids activities, buffet serving area, buffet selections.Resort is fine; just remember it is a Mexican 4-star in the 3rd world atmosphere. I would repeat but would probably go to a different chain resort next time.

Lovely stay

Room: We stayed ground level in adjoining rooms in 20A, and the location was perfect for the pool and lobby. There was highway noise, but when we had on the A/C fan, it was not noticeable at all. Our A/C actually kept my room too cold!Pool/Beach: The kids loved the water park and pool. Unfortunately, the lifeguard will not allow parents to take little kids down the slides, so it was difficult for us, because the slides were the highlight of our 1 yr old's life to date. The beach was an easy train ride away. If you want a perfect family beach photo, this is not the place for you because of the wave breaker things. But if you want your kids to be able to play pretty freely, the barrier is helpful. We didn't have trouble getting chairs at the pool or beach.Food: The food was fine. We weren't "wowed" by anything, but we did fine. The thing that is a little hard is snacking for kids. The snack bar near the kids' pool is open 12-6, so when they got hungry around 10:30, there isn't really anything available. The 24 hour snack bar is far from the kids' pool (and beach). It would be nice if there were a few snacks out in the lobby in the afternoon too (besides the small cookies at the bar).Staff: The staff was wonderful. They were all so friendly and seemed to generally enjoy their jobs. They weren't using their cell phones during work, as I have become accustomed to seeing in the US. I did feel a little concerned at how many hours it seemed like many of them were working.Entertainment: We didn't do any tours or adult shows. Our kids loved the Frozen show. On other nights, there were small entertainment options for kids, but sometimes they were very short and you'll miss them if you aren't there on time (piñata). Kids entertainment is at 8pm, and the adult show is at 9pm. Our kids enjoyed dancing on the terrace after dinner most nights.Tips: Bring money with you. I thought I'd get pesos in the airport but didn't find an ATM. I stopped at one on the way to the hotel (assumed staff would rather have pesos), but then I had big bills that I needed to break (and bought expensive stuff at the lobby store to do so). I then used the lobby ATM, which only gives US dollars and costs $6 to use. The front desk was able to break my $20 into $1 bills. It would have been easier to get $1s at home or exchange for pesos before I came.Club: We didn't do the tour for the Privilege thing, but we did sign up for the loyalty club on GBP's website when we booked. I think we got several "extras" for doing this, including a 5% discount. We got a free safe too, but I didn't expect that.
