Our Opinion

Located in the middle of the resort, Grand Bahia Principe Coba has better amenities than the other two Bahia Principe properties but is about a 10-15 minute walk to the beach, however, trams run throughout the property. A great pool area and clubhouse with Internet access. It has its own buffet restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Also check out the sister resorts next door, Grand Bahia Principe Akumal and Grand Bahia Principe Tulum.

HORRIBLE PLACE!

We have been going to Mexico every summer for 12 years. This resort is horrible! Beach is rocky, covered with mountains of rotting seaweed and you have to take a shuttle to get to it. Customer service is non-existent. No seating at restaurants so it is a free for all trying to find an open and clean table. No one brings you coffee, drinks or clears your plates. Grossly understaffed. Pool swim up bar had 1 bartender. Our last night there we were told our reservation was messed up and we were locked out of 1 room in our family suite. I was treated like a criminal when i tried to resolve it.My 14 year old son spent the last night there on the couch using a bathrobe as a blanket. Met folks on the shuttle going home with similar complaints. Do NOT go to this resort ever!

Family vacation

Really enjoyed our stay, the resort was beautiful and you had so many options for pools, food, excursions etc. I would recommend it for anyone looking for a family friendly vacation destination. One of my favourite parts was how friendly all the staff was at the resort, especially Jose the bellboy at the Coba lobby. He made us feel like VIP guests every day, such wonderful service.

Good Times

Just had 2 weeks at the Coba. The reception was good and efficient, with friendly and attentive staff throughout our stay. The bell boys take your luggage, and wait for you to return with your room keys, ours took us on a short drive in the golf buggy showing us the closest pool, restaurant and kids water park. The food throughout the hotel was good with plenty of choice. The beach is a mile walk or a shuttle ride away from the Coba, Tulum hotel is on the beach with the Premier, and the Sia Khan at the other side of the motorway. The accommodation was a junior suite, which was clean and large for two people, but could possibly be a bit tight for a family of 4.The beach was large with daily watersports both free if you book early enough in the morning, and others for a fee. The beach also had a protected area allowing safe swimming, where fish and pelicans joined in with the guests. There was other areas that were not protected and less safe. Although there were life guards. The hacienda entertainment/shopping area was closed for the main entertainment once a week, which you had to pay for, and the shopping area was mostly tourist tat. If I had a complaint about the hotel, it would be the location. I like to go for walks with my camera to get pictures of the local area, you could not go anywhere without a taxi, bus, or organised excursion. Although the local wildlife was abundant on site.

Second Time Is My Last Time

My first time there was last year. Excellent overall. This time around, not so good. I just returned from there a few days ago. When we arrived, our room air conditioner was working at max, but was pumping out average air. This caused us to be sweating in bed our first 4 days. We literally had to sleep with no covers and barely any clothing on. I finally called and asked for someone to check the system. A serviceman came in and felt the air from the vent and told me it was fine. "Uh, no it's not. We are sweating here. Look at my head". Nothing. Finally, two days after that, I had to call again, as our room now smelled like a sewer. It was warm, humid and stinky. I couldn't see myself sleeping, as it was 11:30pm at night when we returned from an excursion and dinner. I called front desk and they sent, you guessed it, the same guy as before. He admitted it smelled and went for 10 minutes. When he returned, I can't believe what he did. He took out an air freshener and stuck it in the vent. The smell was so powerful, we all got headaches immediately. I told him to NOT put the other freshener in, as this was enough. I then asked about the AC again and he said it was fine. I showed him that it was cranked to max(don't forget the ceiling fan was also on, or we'd have been in a sauna). I also had to literally beg him to check. He said he would and went to where I thought was the roof. He literally left without doing a thing. After the freshener smell permeated the room to the point of nausea, I used my workman skills and opened the vent and removed the freshener. Here is the kicker: This Is the scent they use in the bathrooms there. Our room was now a heavy weird smelling men's room. I threw the disc out the window and aired out the room. That smell lingered for hours after, even with lighting a cigar to take away the scent. I had enoug. I went over to the front desk and talked to a very polite and apologetic employee. He understood my situátion and said he would refer to management. We had an early morning activity we paid heavily for, so I told him we would deal with the issue upon return. The employee told me there were no rooms available to move to at the moment, but he would have one ready when we get back, and he would make sure to get someone to check the AC while we were gone. You can guess that no one did anything about this as, when we returned in the evening, I asked the front desk to update me. The man said someone's was sent "last night". I told him I was there and nobody else came last night. He then stuttered and said someone's was sent during the day while we were gone. I'm a professional at detecting liars(it's my job). He wasn't even close. He also told me the AC was fine. I actually went to check the room and it was the same, but the sewer smell was back. However, it wasn't as pungent as the night before. I will not ever be returning to this resort again. I had a union function planned for this December. 29 people I was going to wow with this place. At least, I thought was. I now have to find another location. Other things about this resort to inform you about? Some are great. The food is excellent. Hasn't changed from last year. The staff are great. They're helpful, courteous and polite. Some aren't, but no place is perfect. The cleanliness of the rooms is also good. I always leave $5 on the bed for cleaners and they appreciate it. I think leaving no money would result in clean rooms nonetheless. The internet access kind of sucks. I needed wifi for work, but I had to go to the lobby to access this service. Of course, this isn't a big deal. It's holidays, so good for a person to take a break from work matters. Lastly, I can't recommend people to visit this resort. I wouldn't have a month ago. This last visit soured me on Grand Bahia Principe. It seems like they're more worried about getting you in and out without a peep rather than dealing with issues that pop up. Perhaps I'm being a bit over sensitive, but I've never complained on holidays like I have this summer, and have nothing done to fix the matter made it that much worse. Sorry GBP, but you cost yourself a union full of visitors in the future. A great leader leads, and I can't tell my people to go to a place that lacks the ability to deal with the smallest issues for people on expensive holidays.

Worth a visit

Stayed at the resort for 14 nights with the family. This was by far my favourite all inclusive holiday I have ever been on. I really could not find fault with it. Food was great with lots of choice, especially for my fussy kids. There was also numerous a la carte restaurants which are included and are highly recommended. You can book 3 per week but book them when you arrive as there is a high demand. The staff were really friendly and nothing seemed too much trouble. If you want a taxi the concierge will even tell you how much it is in advance to avoid you getting ripped off. Always tip when you can as this will ensure speedy service the next time with the bar staff and drinks waitresses. US $1.00 a round of drinks is the norm as the locals rely on tips to support low pay. The majority of the guests are Canadian, American and British. The only down side was the mosquitos but you have to expect that when living in a jungle, this year had a particularly high population of mosquitos and we were all bitten numerous times but found when we stopped wearing aftershave / perfume / deodorant they left us alone snd went for other people. Would I go back......Yes absolutely.
