Our Opinion

Located in the middle of the resort, Grand Bahia Principe Coba has better amenities than the other two Bahia Principe properties but is about a 10-15 minute walk to the beach, however, trams run throughout the property. A great pool area and clubhouse with Internet access. It has its own buffet restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Also check out the sister resorts next door, Grand Bahia Principe Akumal and Grand Bahia Principe Tulum.

Overview
The Grand Bahia Principe Coba is an oasis in which to unwind. Rejuvenate yourself mentally and physically, surrounded by crystal-clear waters and a sandy white beach. A self-contained resort complete with spa, shops, piano bar, sports bar and a disco, Grand Bahia Principe Coba is located behind Grand Bahia Principe Akumal in the beautiful Riviera Maya.

Location: Next to Grand Bahia Principe Akumal, 35 min to Playa del Carmen, 20 min from the Mayan Ruins at Tulum, 90 min from the Cancun airport.

Highlights
  • Kids activities for all ages (baby, child, teen) plus a large waterpark
  • Lush, tropical surroundings and wildlife
  • Large pools with loungers and swim-up bars
  • Dedicated section at the beach with beach bar
  • Great family suites with amenities and mini-bar options for kids

Returned on May 25th from this hotel.. The food was excellent the staff couldn't be better. The major problem with this hotel is extremely poor air conditioning At every all a cart the food was outstanding but you can not enjoy your meal because of the total lack of air conditioning, and it is 39c or higher in restaurant. the staff says it has been like this for a year or more and nobody seems to care. The buffets are the same way. The room air conditioning does not work properly and the mini fridge is the dame way and maintenance says they will fix and never do. Everyone I talked to said exactly the same thing. It is a shame about this but it puts a person off of every visiting againThe last time I stayed here was at the Sian Ka'an and did not have this problem. But I do not think I will be back to this resort complex again, and it will affect my going to and another Grand Bahia Principe hotel againRon

Magical Mexico & The Brilliant Bahia!

Just returned from a weeks stay at the Grand Bahia Principe Coba. Last time I stayed at the Grand Bahia was around 5years ago & that was at the Tulum & Akumal & at the time the Coba was the best of the 3 hotels. At that time guests could use all the facilities at each hotel, however this is no longer the case. The Akumal is now a higher spec hotel, meaning that unless you're staying in that hotel, guests of the Coba or Tulum cannot use the facilities. This is a little frustrating and confusing as the Akumal sits on the prettiest & most child friendly part of the beach within the 3 hotel complex. With its wooden jetties & shallow calm waters it's obviously ideal for watching the fish & letting the kids play. Whilst the restricted use of the Akumal facilities to the other guests does not restrict access to this beach it does present awkwardness if you want a drink or something to eat as you cannot use the beach or pool bars that are close by, you have to either bring your own out of your room or walk to one of the other hotels. We did take our own water & I must say whilst I knew we were allowed on the beach, a member of staff did question our presence (as we had the wrong colour band) until I explained I was aware I couldn't get a drink etc from the bar. Add this to the fact there is also zones for guests who are staying at the Sian ka'an which is another Bahia hotel within the golf course & guests who are privilege customers (those who have paid to upgrade) then it can get confusing & frustrating as to where you can & can't go especially as one of the beaches is called Coba beach, you'd naturally think this was for Coba guests as the Coba doesn't sit on the beach like the Akumal & Tulum does, but this isn't the case, you can sit on it but you cannot use the bar or pool area as it's part of the Akumal hotel. To compensate for this there is the scouts waterpark with slides which the kids seem to love, it's not big but it does it's job in keeping the kids entertained. Regarding the hotel in general, the staff are fantastic, the hotel & grounds are beautiful & clean & the food is great. Yes buffets can get repetitive but given the fact you generally choose from 2-3 different cereals for breakfast whilst at home, the choice is vast & you do have the option of booking some of the a la carte restaurants too for your evening meal. The hotel itself allows guests to hire bikes for free as well as kayaks, paddle boards & snorkelling equipment too. The hotel is very eco-friendly aware & as such offer bird watching & eco walks to guests for a $5 donation to their various eco projects. Travelling around this hotel complex is done by getting around on a trolley service which operates every 5-10 mins or so to each hotel lobby, it can be a big of a guessing game sometimes but generally works well. There is also the Hacienda on site which has a selection of shops, a Casino & sports bars to watch the footy if you wish, I didn't venture up there much but I believe the bars are not part of the all inclusive so drinks would be chargeable. If you want to go to playa del Carmen for the day then just go outside the hotel & wait by the side of the road for a collectivo which costs 40pesos each whereas a taxi would cost around 400 pesos. Likewise a trip to the ruins at Tulum is around £30/$35 each with Thomson, whereas if you do it yourself it's 40pesos each in the collectivo & 70pesos entry (free for kids), so that's around £5/$7 each in comparison & the journey takes around 20mins. Back to the hotel, the rooms are clean & spacious & come with a mini bar which is restocked daily, you are given cards to get a towel for the pool which you hand back so you get a clean towel every day. Given the location of the hotel wildlife is in abundance, so on any given day you'll see iguanas, agoutis, coati's & lots of birds which is beautiful to see & my son got a thrill seeing how many iguanas he could spot in a day!Would I stay again at the Bahia? Yes almost certainly. Despite the fact I do think it's spoiled it somewhat from my previous visits with the segregation of the Akumal, we had a great time & yet again this hotel showcases the diversity of the country's flora & fauna & the friendliness & helpfulness of the staff is to the hotels credit. We found out that majority of the staff work a 10hr shift for around $3 so go easy on the petty complaints, these guys do an amazing job & deserve to be tipped!

Looks can be deceiving.

First off I was at a resort wedding. ( My sisters ) The wedding was beautiful! It was on the beach and the weather was great. How ever, we were there in the middle of May and it was above 95 F with the humid-ex for the entire week. That is not the fault of the resort but when we would go for to any of the food buildings for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, it was only a couple degrees cooler. This left you lethargic and no apatite. I believe this was on purpose to keep you from over indulging at the all you can eat buffet. The staff were great but there were not enough of them. You would wait in a line up at the pool bar as the poor bar tender was overwhelmed. The drinks were inconsistent because the bar tenders were rushed. They constantly ran out of things like Bailelys Irish Cream. Really!?The food at the main buffet was mediocre at best. 3rd day into our stay and the air conditioning broke in our room.By the way the maid never showed up until 530 pm each day to make up our room. By the way when we checked in the room smelt bad. (mildew smell) After 1 day with no air conditioning I had them move me to a different room. (pain in the butt). The new room had air conditioning but no hot water! LOL! I was fine with that because it was so hot anyway. Which brings me to the pool. It was maybe 2 degrees cooler than the air temp. Again this is not the fault of the resort but when you want to cool off and your air conditioner is broken it leaves you wanting to dive into the nearest slush machine. The resort is beautiful and it is a shame that they are cutting corners. All that is needed is maybe 50% more staff and turn down the A/C to below 80 F! Hope this review helps!

Excelllent stay

Me and my partner stayed here for one week, we flew from Manchester. The transfer from cancun airport to the hotel was around 1 and a half hours and stopped once at another hotel to drop people off. On arrival at the hotel the bell boys deal with your luggage, you go and check in, which was quick and you get a cocktail while you are checking in, then you go and tell the bell boys where you are staying and they take you to your room on a golf cart like thing then brings your luggage to your rom very helpful. We stayed in a room overlooking the quiet pool and it was in an ideal spot. I would recommend emailing the hotel as this is what we did and we got the room we requested. The room was very clean and spacious and the bed was massive. Air con was a little smelly at first but was ok after a day or two, the air con was lovely and there is also a ceiling fan, I read some reviews that the air con was rubbish but I found it fine. The room was cleaned everyday and the fridge stocked with pop and beer. Food at the resort buffet was nice you could always find something to eat I prefer the restaurants though. Cocktails are so good my favourite being mango tango it's beautiful you have to try it. We went to the Mexican, Brazilian and Japanese tepanyaki restaurants my favourite being the Japanese , I would advise booking the restaurants asap as we booked the first day and only managed to get late meal reservations (10pm) The Mexican restaurant was a massive let down for me, I thought this would be the best , I had fajitas and they were tasteless and dessert is from a buffet which annoyed me as I thought you would be served something with it being an al a carte. Brazilian was lovely if you like your meats you will enjoy this, little confusing at first with the way they serve things but when the meat comes it's really nice. Japanese tepanyaki was brilliant. The beach was a massive let down for me I expected it to be a stunning Caribbean beach but when we got there it was very rocky and full of sea weed , the men down there work hard to remove the sea weed but when you see a dumper getting rid of it all into a wagon it really dampens your Caribbean beach experience lol I know this can't be helped and it's no ones fault I just wasn't impressed by it. The golf buggys take you all over if you need a lift to the beach there is one coming regularly or if you want just a lift round the resort they are very handy. You have to pay for a safe which I think is wrong! The entertainment and bar outside the lobby at night is good but that stops at 11pm then you only have the 24 hour bar to get alcohol from and there is no atmosphere in there. There is the hacienda forMore entertainment but we didn't bother with that! There is a quieter pool and a more noisier one which plays musicAnd has pool games etc we preferred the quieter pool it was less busy both have pool bar. I would recommend taking a thermos cup to keep drinks cold As drinks get warm so quick. It was very very hot and humid when we went so take plenty of creams as I think the shop on site is highly over priced ( 9 dollars for a share bag of lays crisps ) As for tipping we didn't spend a lot £25 in a week, you can spend as little or as much as you want , we tipped the maid daily and the odd waiter for great service. Overall I really enjoyed my week here and would definitely come back if I found as good a deal as what I did this time around.
