Our Opinion

Located in the middle of the resort, Grand Bahia Principe Coba has better amenities than the other two Bahia Principe properties but is about a 10-15 minute walk to the beach, however, trams run throughout the property. A great pool area and clubhouse with Internet access. It has its own buffet restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Also check out the sister resorts next door, Grand Bahia Principe Akumal and Grand Bahia Principe Tulum.

Overview
The Grand Bahia Principe Coba is an oasis in which to unwind. Rejuvenate yourself mentally and physically, surrounded by crystal-clear waters and a sandy white beach. A self-contained resort complete with spa, shops, piano bar, sports bar and a disco, Grand Bahia Principe Coba is located behind Grand Bahia Principe Akumal in the beautiful Riviera Maya.

Location: Next to Grand Bahia Principe Akumal, 35 min to Playa del Carmen, 20 min from the Mayan Ruins at Tulum, 90 min from the Cancun airport.

Some deficiencies at Coba

This was our first trip to Mexico. We had low expectations but still had some disappointments:1. fridge in room not working. Took them 2 days to fix, and when fixed, the fridge door would fall off. Had to carefully place door back. Fridge didn't keep contents cold, only cool.2. Phone didn't ring. We went with another couple, and they couldn't call us.3. Safe: no way to lock4. Room fan "loose" and noisy, so didn't use it.5. Patio door came off track. Took 2 days to have it fixed (we couldn't get it back ourselves). When repaired, the magnetic sensor didn't line up, and that is what ensures your air conditioner works. So we had to forcibly lift door to get connection.6. Bath tub drain stopper didn't work - could only shower. 7. No snacks in room. Make sure if you want them, that you have this as part of your package. Otherwise, a bag of Cheetos is $9USD in the store.8. Alcohol in room: only 2 beer/day stocked. Again, ensure you are aware of what you purchased. And in a warm fridge, it was less than ideal!9. Luggage delivery on arrival a bit slow. We arrived late evening and were exhausted. Our travel companions were without theirs for over an hour.10. We were a couple without kids. Be aware that this is a family resort, and were fine with being at a family resort. The smaller pools were supposed to not have anyone under age 18, but this was not enforced (unless it was by another guest). And pools are closed for cleaning if there are 'accidents' by a child (this happened once in a larger pool with the swim up bar).11. Be aware of all the smoking. Surprising how many people do smoke.12. A challenge to book the a-la-carte dinners, and lots of unavailability. Many people did not dress as per the dress code and were still seated. Most men in shorts. Some bathing attire. Japanese meal was amazing. Seafood restaurant not available. We did enjoy our trip. I'm not sure we would go back; likely try other resorts first. Some disappointments. I would probably rate this as a 3-star hotel room. But, we didn't really spend a lot of time in our room. Bed was a bit firm.It was nice to go and truly rest. The meals were good. The staff were kind and friendly.

Great Resort... Great Vacation!

My husband and I booked our honeymoon at this resort Feb 8-15 and it was amazing. Being our second time in Mexico, we knew what to expect, but a lot of what we experienced surpassed our expectations! I'll give my review on everything!CHECK IN - We arrived at the main lobby for check in, but because we had booked "Royal Golden", we were quickly shuttled to a smaller lobby within the resort for our check in. We were given drinks upon arrival and a complimentary bottle of tequila. The staff in the Golden Lobby were amazing. So so so friendly (I apologize for not knowing their names). Our room was at the far end of the resort (villa 6a) which annoyed me at first (the resort is MASSIVE) but once we were able to navigate our way through the resort it wasn't bad at all. ROOM - Our room was on the second floor and upon arrival we saw our fridge was fully stocked with beer, pop and water. A couple of times our fridge wasn't restocked and we quickly realized it was two different services so we'd leave a tip on both the bed and in the fridge and magically the beer would appear :) (sorry for the delay on that one!) We had a pretty bland view from our balcony overlooking a fence, but we spent very little time out there anyways so it wasn't something to dwell on. Our room was very clean, we got new towels daily, and the TV had a huge selection of shows/movies to watch, which came in handy when a certain someone got heat stroke. Our bed wasn't the most comfortable, but it was huge and passing out after a long day was no issue. BARS/BUFFET - food everywhere. The buffet was absolutely huge and so was the selection (except what the heck guys, the guac was missing 4 out of 7 days), and there was tons of options. Snack bars by the pool and beach also had amazing food selections, and there are bars in every lobby. Getting a drink in the main lobby bar was a bit of a pain because it was so congested there, so we usually stuck to hanging out after dinner in the Premier/Golden Lobby if we wanted to focus primarily on drinking and getting those drinks fast. Drinks were always mixed well and never tasted watered down, so that was great. Jesus in the pool bar was hilarious and really quick. A la carte's were awesome although we had slim pickings upon arrival, and the guy booking them seemed as though he'd rather be anywhere else doing anything else than booking our dinners. He seemed pleased with when many dinner availabilities were only at 9:00 and that we didn't want those time slots. So we managed to get into four restaurants between 5:30-6:00, and that was great. The service at each restaurant was amazing and we would always leave feeling so full we could barely walk back to our room. BEACH/POOLS - our first day we were so confused as to how to actually get to the beach, so we asked our helpful lobby friends and they explained we needed to walk to the main lobby and hop on one of the many shuttles (that service was great!) that would be titled "Beach Coba", or the driver would just shout "Coba Beach?" And you'd hop on! The shuttle was about 5 or so minutes, probably way longer if you walked. A bit disappointing that it wasn't so close but again, the shuttle service made up for it with being so quick. ( if ocean views are something important to you, book at Tulum... looks beautiful there!) getting a beach chair was NO problem, and most days we would get there for closer to 10 am, and we'd go near the end of the beach on Tulum side and 80% of the time found shaded loungers. During our stay it was REALLY windy which was nice during tanning but sucked for the water because the red flags were up. We could still go where the barricades were but we like to snorkel and explore, which we couldn't really do. No fault of the resort though lol. Schools of different fish always surrounding you and the water was so clear you could always see them! Getting drinks at the beach bar was great because they turned the tap around and getting your own beer was nice! We stayed nice and close a couple of days for that convenience! There's 4 (?) pools and all were great. When we weren't at the beach, we were at the pool closest to the lobby because it was huge, but smaller than the other one by the kids water park. And Jesus was working that pool bar and we've established he was great :DOVERALL - the nightlife is a bit of a miss, but that's just because we don't smoke and everyone at the main lobby would be sitting in the white chairs and smoking. So we just avoided the main lobby after dinner. There's a casino and a disco but we heard they weren't that great and we weren't feeling adventurous enough to go and see for ourselves. Grounds are beautiful, and this resort is very child friendly, with Bahia Scouts and the water park, we were (almost) kicking ourselves for not bringing our son as he would've enjoyed those things! All in all, this resort was beautiful and well kept. We'll be back to GBP but we may book on the Tulum side next time around, just to see what it's like. Thank you for a great honeymoon GBP!

Amazing Resort

My wife and I just got back from this place and we loved it. We were lucky enough to have stayed in the Coba Premier part of the resort. We were in building 1A, room 30116 on the second floor and we loved it. The room was huge and in immaculate condition. If we walked out and to the right we were at the Premier lobby and the buffet and if you turn left the pool was right there. The buffets were better than expected and we always found something good to eat. Service was always good when we went as someone always came over with water and coffee in the mornings. People seemed to complain about the lineups for the various bars but it really wasn't that bad. I think if the bartenders see you being patient they will treat you accordingly. Loved the beach and the pool areas. First vacation we never had to get up early for chairs and palapas. Although there were lots of inconsiderate people who did and didn't show up till much later in the day which was frustrating to say the least. I saw some people complain about the fact they didn't have towel art every time they got back to your room but should it not be about having a clean room? Just saying. We had heard about boingo wifi before we got here and we were really glad we did. We had wifi all over the place and we're able to FaceTime with our kids back home. We did this from the beach, pool and buffet. I would highly recommend this. This is a resort that we would love to bring our kids back to someday. Thank you Coba for a great time. Hola.

Average at Best

We had a group of 16 girls stay here for a bachelorette vacation. This is my first all inclusive resort experience, and probably my last. Maybe there are better, more high-end, resorts that would offer a better experience, but for the price we paid, I don't think that it was worth it. The long wait to check in, the food, false advertisements, and bugs in our room all made for a very unforgettable experience!ROOMS:I will say that the grounds and beach are kept immaculately clean. Not sure I can say the same about THE ROOMS. Our first night, 3 of us were forced to cram into another room with another 3 of our girls because there were mites all over the bed and ground of our room. We called the front desk on 3 separate occasions that night to report it, were put on hold for hours and then told that there was no availability to put us in a different room, that we'd have to call back the next day. We walked to the front lobby the next morning to try and switch rooms but were told that we should have requested to switch rooms the night before because now they had no available rooms?!?! We were livid!! After much frustration and pushback, they finally looked in their systems and found that a room was all of a sudden magically open for us. The rest of our stay in the new room was okay. The furniture was a little dank and not very clean smelling. No ventilation in the room or bathrooms.FOOD & DRINKS:Drinks were watered down, food was bland. You're better off going into Tulum or Playa for food. We asked one of the workers about the food and were told that because tourists do not like a lot of the mexican spices and flavors, the food has to be cooked a certain way to appease them. The 2 free nights at their restaurants that they advertise is completely false. Maybe we were there at the wrong time, who knows. We attempted to schedule reservations at their restaurants and were immediately told that ALL of the restaurants were completely booked for the entire time of our stay. Reservations can only be made once you've checked in and have been assigned a room, but once you have all of the information needed to make reservations, everything has already been booked. It was a lose lose situation for us. Again, we were livid!! After much yelling, frustration, and offering up some $$$$, one of the restaurants magically had an opening for 16 girls to dine in. Coincidence?? Sleazy?? Who knows?? Anyway, our dinner at Rodizio was average at best...definitely not worth the frustration. Also, I find it surprising to know that all of the restaurants were completely booked when during our dinner, the restaurant was MAYBE 20% full.......ACTIVITIES:Again, maybe we went during the wrong time, but all of the water sports that are advertised on their website (snorkeling, paddle boarding, etc.) were unavailable due to high tides. Not sure what that means since the tides did not seem that high to me, but whatever, I understand the sake of safety that the hotels may need or want to abide by. Not sure about all of the other activities on the hotel grounds though since I wasn't really sure where to go. All in all, I would definitely not come back nor recommend this place to anyone I know. Not even sure I'd come here for free.
