Our Opinion

The Grand Riviera Princess is a relatively good resort situated in the heart of the Riviera Maya Strip. The grounds are immaculate and well-maintained. The staff of the resort are also incredibly helpful and friendly. The check-in and check-out process goes by a bit quicker than most other resorts. The food options are varied, however booking for a la carte restaurants can be a bit of a process. Overall, it's still a great resort for those looking to relax in the heart of the Riviera Maya.

Not for us

We stayed in a Laguna Villa for 1 week from 17th November. Check in took forever, and I agree with a previous reviewer we were treated like cattle. There wasn't even a separate check in for platinum guests. This certainly gave a very bad first impression. The foods was good at 'le fleur' restaurant but at all the others including the buffet it ranged from just OK to awful. We actually walked out of the miso oriental restaurant because the food was so terrible. It took so long to be served at breakfast in the platinum buffet we opted to use the regular buffet instead. Don't be fooled when you see the Platinum lounge serves a la carte breakfast and lunch, we were discouraged from ordering from the menu on both occasions that we asked! The Hotel tells you that long trousers and shirts (smart casual attire) must be worn in the a la carte restaurants but they don't bother to enforce it, so you have people who have made the effort to dress for dinner sitting alongside people wearing cut off shorts and baseball caps, but nothing was said, so disappointing. We were also disturbed by drunken groups inside the restaurants and in various other parts of the complex. Don't get me wrong, we like a drink ourselves and realise that people let their hair down on holiday but sometimes it just wasn't nice. I think the hotel has to make its mind up whether it is upscale or not and in our opinion it certainly wasn't. You can't be all things to all people and they really need to up their game with regard to those guests who have opted to pay a premium for a premium service. Our only saving grace was having the use of the Laguna villas pool which was lovely and the waitress Margarita was exceptional. The grounds of the resort were beautiful and well kept. The beach was ok but again access to the platinum area wasn't controlled on the occasions we went there so it seemed to be a free for all, which is fine, but don't make guests pay for something you don't offer! All in all it was just ok, not an upscale resort by any standards, it was too huge and therefore the food has to be mass produced and it was sadly lacking. So, if you are looking for an average resort that caters for the masses and not a lot more then this is the place for you. Sadly it wasn't for us.

4th time at resort this is what you need to know

This resort has changed over the last 6 years. It's more geared to family's. There are many strollers parked at door ways entrances at restaurants etc. LOTS OF KIDS. The resort is clean , beach is great and staff are wonderful. Guadalupe was our favourite server on the beach... she works so hard all day, great personality! If you eat at the chill out restaurant and you should! Best food on the resort... you have free access to the chill out area all week instead of 18.00 US a day for beach service. The chill out used to offer free mini sandwiches to people on the beach , they don't now.. I think they still should bc that was a nice touch but you can order food from their menu for a fee. The resort is large but a shuttle runs every 10 mins or so if your not into walking or are wearing heals for dinner it's a helpful bonus. The buffet is much smaller than it used to be ... quality is still good no complaints. Wilberth ( pronounced wilber ) in the platinum snack is very friendly and a great server ... Anyone with royal on their name tag run! It's timeshare people they try to look like managers. Suggestion for resort - pls have the lobby store staff stop following Shopper's like they are about to shop lift. I was followed so close I was offend (literally they were 2 to 3 feet from me) .. they were not friendly to anyone. I did purchase items from the store near the beach those ladies were great. We were at the resort nov 19-26th. I would recommend this resort it's my old go to. Any questions pls send me a message

If you want to be treated like cattle...this is the place!

The problem comes when you first arrive and the reception treats you like a second class citizen. It does not matter what time you get there, they will not allow you to check in prior to 3 PM, even if the rooms are available. Some of the staff treats you right.. the rest of the staff treats you like cattle...We went for thanksgiving and the place was packed. We "tried" to change pillows because the one they had in the Jr suite were horrendous and spent almost the entire trip fighting with everyone about getting new pillows! Let's not even talk about the bed... I left the place with lower back problems...The pool is not heated so do not think for a moment that you will be the model smiling inside of the pool because it is literally freezing!!! The specialty restaurants are not that good, actually the buffet is better. If I would have to recommend you a hotel in Playa del Carmen , please do not consider this place if you have other options!

Great place to stay! Would go back!

What a beautiful resort! Rooms were very clean, staff was friendly, food and drinks were great, shows were fantastic, spa was amazing! We didn't experience anything negative. They always have a buffet with plenty to choose from for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is also a sports bar open 24 hours that you can get food and drinks from anytime you want. Grilled hamburgers and hot dogs are always available by the pool area for lunch. There are several restaurants you can make reservations for dinner. They fill up quickly, so don't wait to do that. Hibachi Grill and Italian were our favorite! Oh! Make sure you visit the ice cream shop! So good!We loved the shows! The dancers are excellent and a lot of fun. We weren't able to see all of the shows, but Grease and Horror Night (Halloween Films) were our favorite of the ones we saw! So much talent! They have a Mexican Market one night that is outside and you are able to purchase items and see some incredibly talented artists. We had a great server at the breakfast/lunch buffet (Sunset). Ask for Maricela Hernandez...she is THE BEST! Always greets you with a smile and is so friendly. Juan is the best for the PM buffet. Ask for him!Rogelio Cruz is the BEST bartender at the Sports Bar. So nice and so fun! He makes fantastic drinks and does everything with a smile. You will want him as your friend by the time you leave there. We will certainly come back again. Seven days just wasn't enough. :)

Excellent time.

Went November 13th to 20th. Flew Westjet Vacations..great flight. No check in problems..room request was honored, and in a great location...mid point near the quiet pool....room 7210. The room was large and kept clean everyday. Lots of water, soda and beer replaced every day in the fridge. We booked the Chill Out Restaurant for our first night there, wonderful ocean front location and great food. The bill was about 1100 peso..so about $75.00...the bonus with doing this was we were then able to sit in the Chill Out area of the beach every day, and were waited on by Ana, who was wonderful. She was so attentive and friendly and remembered what we liked to drink every day.The food was really good even in the Buffet.(thanks Roberto for the great service), We went to 2 a la cartes..the Steakhouse (Filet Mignon excellent) and the Teppenyaki show cooking, again excellent and so much fun.Lots of choices of bars to go to and plenty of seating..the sports bar is great and excellent Panini's.My husband is usually ready to go home after 4 days, but he actually said he loved this resort and would have liked to stay for 2 weeks. This is one resort that we will return to.
