Our Opinion

A fantastic 5-star resort that is well-known for its outstanding and attentive guest services. Great a la carte and buffet items available. Depending on when you stay, the resort does have a tendency to be a bit quieter, making it perfect for adults and couples.

2nd Time at this Resort

We decided to return to this resort because our first stay 3 years ago was amazing. The food, service and accommodations were fabulous and we raved about it to everyone. This time we were not as impressed, the quality of food went down, in fact both my husband and didn't feel good after eating at one of the restaurants and we spoke to several other people that had the same experience. The service wasn't even the same standard as 3 years ago. Even the upkeep of the pool was not the same, tiles were coming off and it was in dire need of repair, it still was as beautiful inside and our room was clean and taken care of each day. I believe my husband and I will be trying a different all inclusive resort for our next vacation.

Incredible

Top notch from start to finish. Grand Paraiso was excellent in every way. I would go back in a heart beat. Always something to do, food is good and service even better. Staff works hard and are eager to please and very accommodating. If you do go, change $100 in singles and tip around, staff works hard and undoubtedly paid poorly- they appreciate the tips and you will get the extra attention.

The Grand, again...

The Grand… again. This will be a 5-star review. I’ll start off by saying this was our second time staying at this resort and we will without a doubt return again. Our stay was to celebrate our honeymoon from May 13th-19th. This trip we took 3 other couples with us for some ‘group honeymooning.’ When you stay here at the grand, you can expect the service to be of the highest quality. The accommodations are hands down the best you will find in Riviera Maya. As others have told us, we set the bar pretty high. Since this was our second stay, we asked to see if there was an upgrade available for the room. It turns out they had one opening for an oceanfront room (building 71). The cost to do so was worth it at the front desk, so we did. After all, we were celebrating our honeymoon! On this trip we encountered several staff that set themselves above and beyond. The main bar there’s two bartenders, Daniel and Gustavo. Daniel knows a thing or two about cocktails and horchata! He went out of his way to make my wife a horchata drink (spiked too!) on several occasions. Gustavo is just awesome. Nothing more to be said. Always our go to guy, willing to make sure you’re taken care of and happy. Our primary butler, Fernando did wonders for us. Pretty much guaranteed that everything was as it should be. Refilled our ice for champagne when it was requested (we had a lingering champagne bottle we just couldn’t get through when we got back to our room at midnight). Big shout out to Victor as well. He provided us with a romantic turn down service on one of the nights. This included rose petals on the floor to the bed, hot bubbly water, candle lit hallway, and a bottle of champagne which we both very much enjoyed! ;) On our prior trip, we encountered Octavio. This guy is awesome. My friend and I were sitting down having lunch and he asked if we wanted some sorbet. We said yes, but quickly finished and wanted to get back to the pool. Octavio, took it upon himself to hunt us down. No words to describe this. We had the opportunity to see him on this trip as well. I told him I like my food *very* spicy. He made sure that this happened. Sure enough, fresh habaneros to the rescue! Leslie was one of the activities members. She was extremely informative of what things were going on and very eager to get us involved in the action! We mostly declined because we we’re there to relax and ‘not play sports.’ Just a personal preference. So glad to know we weren’t being excluded from anything. Mid week, we played a round of golf. Well, tried to anyway. One of the nicer courses I’ve played on to be honest. We did this with another couple. I believe we bailed out on hole 7. It was pretty hot that day and we decided it was better to stay hydrated be by the pool. The drink cart could have been a little more frequented. We only saw it once during our time on the course (and had to ask). Typically, I’m used to seeing them probably once every 45 minutes or so. None of us are very good at Golf so that probably had *some* to do with our early departure. Fun nonetheless. On Thursday of our trip, we got the couples Mayan massage. Pretty close to the best massage I’ve had. My wife had Yasmin and I ended up with another therapist. I wish I could remember her name or I would mention! She did excellent work on my back and shoulders. I asked for deeper pressure which she was happy to provide. The added hot stones were a nice touch. Our last evening, we ate at the Mexican restaurant La Brisa for dinner. Felix was our primary waiter with Juan being there as well. Both of them provided exemplary service to our party. I cannot thank them enough for making our last night spectacular! We left before the rest of our party and missed the tableside mayan coffee. I was more upset about this than I should have been but oh well. I won’t forget it next time. I’ve found that personally the daily poolside grill is my favorite lunch. I have a passion for grilled food. I got a burger with garlic on it and it was excellent. I highly recommend asking for the same. Fresh guacamole on the side with pico and hot peppers. One of the days they had pork & pineapple tacos. Delicious. I asked for 1 taco and she told me I wanted 2. Yeah, Olivia was right. I ate both and had a burger after as well! Also, there’s a hidden gem off the grand property which I highly recommend you visit at least once. I know, hard to believe wanting to leave the Grand but the taco bar by the shopping center has the most authentic street tacos you’d expect in Mexico and they are delicious. The pulled pork ones ended up being my favorite and sad that I didn’t learn about this until late in our trip. The only issue(s) we can comment on is our in room phone went dead on night 5 and I had some difficulty ordering room service. Late night room service is a must and I highly recommend the club sandwich. One of the best I’ve personally ever had. I probably ordered this 3 times through the week. Fresh grilled chicken and bacon. The fries are also pretty good. We did encounter some beach squatters on our trip. My friend and I went to lay down on the beach, found some unused chairs (which didn’t have anything on them) and about an hour later, a rather rude woman comes over to disturb us and complain that she had “reserved” these chairs we were sitting in since 8AM. Bear in mind, it’s now 1130AM. We apologized but said there was no indication they were for her. It’s also Grand policy that you cannot reserve beach chairs, so my recommendation is to go early and stay late. If your butt isn’t in the chair it’s not yours to have. The wifi signal could have been better in our room. The main building we didn’t have any issue, or on the beach near La Brisa. We aren’t necessarily there to be on our phones, but its worth mentioning. Next trip, remind myself to pay more attention to the pool bar tenders! The problem here is mostly me. I’m too caught up in having a good time getting my drink on and conversing with my friends. They’re just so damn happy to make you drinks while ensuring you’re having a good time. It’s hard to stay focused with all that rum and tequila in your face!

Happy wife, happy life!

As I write this, 3643 of 4456 reviews – over 80% - rated the IB Grand as “Excellent.” There’s a reason for that. You will love it here. Worried that it’s not worth the cost? Don’t be – its well worth it. This was our second trip to The Grand and we will go again. The wife is celebrating one of those milestone birthdays later this year and we splurged a little for an oceanfront room for the week. She actually said that the Iberostar wristband she wore all week was her most expensive bracelet ever but she would have rather have had it than an equivalent diamond bracelet. Happy wife, happy life. The Ritz Carlton hotels have a motto that goes “We are ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen.” Iberostar must have translated that motto into Spanish and trained their staff accordingly. We have never been treated so well at any hotel – including Ritz-Carltons. I swear, if we had wanted roasted goat with gopher sauce, these folks would have found a way to serve it up. The service was friendly, but very professional and very high quality. You can read all about the restaurants, the facilities, and the food in other reviews. For the most part, everything was fantastic. Even beach drink service – a weakness at most resorts – was outstanding. Jonathan took care of us most days as we sat under an oversized palapa in a padded chair. I never had to get off my backside. Judging from the bathroom scales on my return to the USA, I should have gotten out of that chair more often! In addition to the service, the facilities are magnificent with astounding views, top notch pools, and upscale bars and restaurants. There’s little not to love, but there were a couple of issues that were a bit distracting. Our shower – particularly during busy times – ran very hot and then very cold within a few seconds. We were asked to consider a massage at least 5 times a day when we sat on the beach. And the vendors selling silver, sunglasses and fake Cuban cigars on the beach were as thick as flies. One vendor (not associated with the hotel, obviously) let us know he sidelined in recreational substances, but compared with Negril, Jamaica ($5 for a rolled one, mon!) this was very minor. However, we were never pestered about time shares or vacation clubs by anyone. Finally, the butlers and concierges are fantastic. Want extra Budweiser (and yes, they have all kinds of American beers including Bud Light. In cans. Yick. ) in your room fridge? Just ask. We very much appreciated Hilde and Jhonny in building 70. This was one of my favorite vacations ever. Thank you, Iberostar. Bueno trabajo.

Everything was perfect except for our room

This was our second visit to the Grand. Our first was two years ago and we have been waiting to return ever since. It is easily the best all-inclusive resort we have visited. Everything about the resort is described in my initial review and so I will only highlight the differences that stood out this trip. This time around, we noticed that check-in went a lot smoother and faster. Everyone at the front desk was helpful and clear in explaining our accommodations. At check-in, we were told that we qualified for a free room upgrade and that we would be in a pool front room on the first floor. I had to sign an agreement to accept the upgrade. (On our first visit, we were in room without a view on the second floor). After we got settled in the room, my wife mentioned that she didn't like the smell. It was a wet, mildew like smell. We asked for another room. They took us to inspect another room, which was also on the first floor, but did not have a pool view. This room also had the mildew smell, but not as strong as our original room. The offered to bring us an aromatherapy oil diffuser to help with the smell, so we just stayed in the original room to see if the oils would help. They did end up making a big difference in the smell. That was just the beginning of the the issues we had with the room. Later that day we hoped to iron our clothes for dinner only to discover that there was no iron. That night, we tried to turn down the AC because it was a little warm. After a call to housekeeping, they explained that the AC is not allowed to go below 22 Celsius (71 F) in order to save energy. However, they made an exception for our room and allowed us to set it to 18 Celsius (64 F). One day we tried to order room service but could not find the menu. After another call to housekeeping, they said that there should be a big brown book in our room that includes the room service menu and all of the details of the hotel. We did not have that book. When our aromatherapy diffuser ran out of oil on the second day, we asked for more oil. They said they would bring more oil but never did. We asked multiple people every day of our trip for more oil but it never arrived.Despite the multiple calls to housekeeping and never having the oil replenished, the staff was responsive and tried their best to appease us.One positive about this room is that it was steps away from the serenity pool and steps away from the breakfast buffet restaurant.I'd like to hope that we just had bad luck with our room this trip. This will not stop us from returning.
