Our Opinion

A perfect hotel for families and couples. There is a plethora of activities during the day and night. Evening entertainment is held every night. The property - which includes Iberostar Paraiso Beach - is huge, so this resort is suited for those who don't mind a little bit of walking. There is a variety of both buffet and a la carte items to choose from - make sure to check out the steak restaurant. A great beach area. However, like most large resorts, this area gets fairly busy during the day, so make sure to grab a lounger early. An amazing kids club and there are plenty of all-ages activities.

Worth it if you get a deal

My husband and I stayed at the Iberostar Paraiso del Mar (IPM) for eight days/7 nights in late September. It was our 35th stay at an all-inclusive in Mexico. We usually choose smaller resorts but we got such a good deal on this one that we couldn't pass it up. This resort is BIG; it is almost half a mile from the beach to the lobby. We found the IPM to be a mixed bag; they did some things very well and were definitely lacking in other areas. Unfortunately, it's usually the shortcomings you remember.Check-in was fast and easy. We weren't approached by a time share/vacation club representative during the process. Before we went to our room we stopped by the concierge to make a la carte dinner reservations. I had emailed the resort one week prior to arrival to make these reservations but received an immediate reply saying that I should wait till three days before arrival to email about this matter. Following their directions, I emailed on the appointed day and never received a reply. During the process of making reservations the fact that we'd been to Mexico many times came up and the concierge immediately tried to get us to go to a time-share presentation. We quickly confirmed our total lack of interest and she dropped the subject. We did receive several calls [that we didn't answer but were probably time-share related (who else would be calling?)] and notes under our door pushing the time-share program. Our room (in building 15) was spacious and clean. The beds were medium-firm and the pillows were comfortable. The ceiling fan kept the air moving but the preset low of 22 degrees C. for the air conditioning wasn't cool enough for us so we called the front desk to have the thermostat lowered to 18 degrees (something they'll do if you call to ask; I learned this by reading reviews on trip advisor!). The bathroom was good-sized as was the shower. Water pressure was good and there was always hot water. Shampoo/conditioner combo, body wash and lotion were provided (no separate conditioner). The hair dryer worked well. There was no umbrella in our room so on the first drizzly evening we went to the front desk to try to get one. We were told that extra umbrellas were kept in each building and could be requested from housekeeping. The front desk employee called housekeeping for us and when we returned to our room later that evening (slightly wet) there was an umbrella waiting for us. We got ready to use it the next evening (which was also rainy) and found out that it was broken. We made our way to the lobby (through the rain with our broken umbrella) and were able to exchange it for one that worked. I'm not sure why they could give us an umbrella from the front desk that night when they couldn't the previous night. We found the food to be OK, not great (although this is a very subjective area of any review). Breakfast at the buffets closer to the beach (El Faro and El Puerto) provided plenty of choices for us but there were definitely more options (especially Mexican items) at the buffets by the lobby. Lunch at either of the buffets by the beach offered a variety of hot dishes, salads, desserts, etc. Not gourmet by any means, but we were never hungry. We only ate two buffet dinners during our stay and Mexican night (Tuesday) was one of our favorite meals. The three a la cartes we tried (Brazilian, Mexican, Japanese) were OK but we've seen each concept executed better at many of the other resorts we've visited. We also ate dinner at the taco stand and the burger place at the shopping center within the resort. There were five or six choices of street tacos (three per order). We especially liked the steak and the chicken/shrimp options. The burgers were tasty, somewhat greasy and bigger that we thought they'd be. They were better than many burgers we've had in Mexico (not spongy/rubbery). The accompanying fries were above average. We has dessert at the nearby ice cream/crepe shop after our tacos and burgers (six flavors of ice cream including coconut). We tried to eat lunch at the sports bar one day but found that they only serve food after 4:00. We also learned that, even though the sports bar has lots of TVs, they are only able to show two different channels at a time (so we couldn't watch the football game we had hoped to watch). We found the drinks to be typical of what's found at any all-inclusive in Mexico. They didn't seem watered down. The beach bar did have dark beer (something that's not always available, in our experience). There was virtually no bar service on the beach (employees did make the rounds to pick up used glasses but we were only asked two or three times during our entire stay if we needed anything to drink). Luckily, the line at the beach bar was never more than five or six deep and there was self-serve soda and juice. Service was much better at the lobby bar. Olivia waited on us several evenings and she was attentive and very personable. The beach had lots of well-spaced palapas that were available as late as 9:00-9:30 each morning. The water entry was sandy so no water shoes were needed. There were larger rocks once you got farther out in the water but they were easy to see. We were impressed with the thoroughness of the lost and found set-up. We had accidentally left a bungee cord hanging from our palapa at the beach. It wasn't a huge deal but we thought we'd check to see if it might have made its way to the lost and found. We were directed to a concierge who scrolled through dozens of pictures of lost items cataloged by when and where they were left and we found our bungee cord. Thanks to security guard Juan Carlos Chi who turned it in!The wifi was good almost everywhere in the resort. We found the signal to be weak at the El Puerto restaurant (much better at El Faro) and very weak/non-existent on the beach. It rained quite a few of the evenings that we were there so we ended up using the golf cart shuttles more than we would have in better weather. We found that it worked better to call from our room to get a cart rather than to just go wait at the nearby shuttle stop. It seemed like the shuttles didn't operate on a consistent schedule so calling made their arrival more predictable. Alberto was one of the shuttle drivers/bellboys and he was always very friendly and helpful and even remembered our building without our having to tell him. There was lots of wildlife on the grounds of the resort. We saw peacocks (even on the beach!), swans, flamingos, agoutis, iguanas and coatis (lots of coatis: the area by the beach grill was overrun with them). The one consistent shortcoming that we experienced was the inaccurate/inconsistent information (both verbal and written) concerning various schedules. For example, the concierge had a printed schedule of theme nights for the buffet dinners which differed from the information on the video display in the lobby. We happened to see the video display (and then confirmed the information with a different concierge) or we would have missed the Mexican night at the buffet! We actually never figured out the schedule for live music in the lobby. Two different concierges, a waitress at the lobby bar and a front desk employee each gave us different performance information (days of the week and times). We finally just gave up trying to schedule dinner around the times we might be able to enjoy the music. And, as I mentioned before, the shuttles seemed to operate on a random schedule so you couldn't count on one being available with any regularity.Would we return? Probably not. It's not only because of the shortcomings (and there definitely were some) but also because this vacation once again confirmed for us that we prefer smaller resorts.

Great vacation, great weather, great food

My boyfriend and I traveled to this resort on August 24th-30th. Upon arrival check in was fast, our room was absolutely amazing we were In building 17 on the third floor. It was close enough to both the beach/pool and the main lobby, no complaints. There was and endless supply of places to eat at this resort! The star rock cafe off of the lobby was an a la Carter restaurant without the reservation, food was great and it was air conditioned. The only complaint I have is that the main buffet was open and not air conditioned which made it really hot to eat. Other than that food choices were great every night was different. The Brazilian a la Carte was amazing (7 courses of meat), also we tried the Mexican (it was okay) the Mediterranean (also okay), and the Japanese which I would highly recommend! Once you have booked your three a la cartes for your 7 day period, if you want more you can go to the lobby and ask about any open spots or cancellations! Mosquitos were really bad around this time so bring bug spray! Drinks were great lots to choose from (mojitos and riviera maya were the ones we drank frequently)They can pretty much make any drink. The entertainment wasn’t the best at night but it was fair. The pool entertainment and beach were always booming and making everyone have a great time. No shortage of hot water in the room and the a/c worked great the room was nice and cold. Overall it was an amazing vacation and would recommend this resort!!

We were very impressed with the amenities at this hotelAll staff were very friendly and helpfulI can’t say enough about the kids club. We were with 3 children ages 4,6 and 8When it came to whether to spend each day with us or at kids club it was usually kids club. Although there were times it was. A toss up. Their care givers were awesome and very energetic with the children despite the long hours. From the daily activities to the evening performances the kids were very worn out by the end of each day. It made for a memorable vacation for each child. Thank you so much.

Iberostar Del Mar

I was with a group of eleven staying at this resort October 9-14 2017. The resort is lovely. The pool is huge, the pool bars are fun and friendly, and the beach is terrific. This is the second visit to this resort for me and some of the others in our group. It is starting to look a little tired. I will start my review with the rooms. We initially checked in to building 17. This building is close to the restaurants and lobby area but a good walk to the beach. We asked to move and the next morning we checked in to building 12. It did cost extra to upgrade our location. Building 12 is the perfect location to the pool and beach. It is a walk to the lobby but in the evening there are a lot of shuttles running to take you there so it was not an issue for us. The room is very spacious. The mattress was not that great as you could really feel springs in it. The a/c worked much better than in building 17 but the thermostat was also set lower. Be sure to have yours set at 18.0 for maximum coolness. Our room had a walk in shower and very good water pressure. The pool area is huge. You can always find a chair and shade. There are quiet areas, kids areas, bar areas, and activity areas. You can always find a suitable spot for your pool needs. The beach was lovely. There are many palapas and we always got lucky finding enough chairs for our group no matter what time we headed to the beach. The water was so relaxing. A storm did pass through so it got a bit rough one day but it was bearable. There is a little buffet at the beach that is open for lunch. It served hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and usually another choice each day. Ice cream was available as well. The beach bar had excellent service. There was a self serve area for water and soft drinks too. There was a boardwalk sidewalk that winded through the beach and bar area. This is a nice addition especially for those with mobility issues. For breakfast we always ate at the buffet closest to the beach on the Del Mar side. The food offered was good. The only complaint I had was the dishes offered were not replenished. We usually got to breakfast around 10 1030 and each day everything was half full or empty. It is not acceptable, to me, to not have bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, and either the french toast or pancakes available for the entire breakfast service time. It was a disappointment as breakfast is our favorite meal of the day while on vacation. For lunch we usually ate at the buffet on the Paraiso Beach side of the resort. Selection was good. Again, depending on the time we arrived, some of the food was either picked over or completely empty. For dinner, we ate at the Japanese, Mexican, and Steak restaurants. All were acceptable. My steak, however, was really, really tough but I was the only person in our group of eleven with an issue. Again, at these restaurants the appetizers and desserts were picked over or empty by the time we arrived. We had the late dinner seating so we were seated anytime between 830 or 9 pm.Most important regarding the food was the service and it was excellent!! The servers were very friendly and attentive. The serving staff was THE BEST. It always seemed to me the kitchen was focused on preparing the next meal service instead of being attentive to the current meal service. This is a management problem and I do hope management recognizes the issue and makes corrections. One glaring example was the buffet during our visit to the Steak House was torn down before we were finished with our appetizers. If we wanted more there was no opportunity to have more. I do not think this is courteous. The pool area is spacious and the pool bar was fun. The activities staff was great and the music was good.Overall the resort is lovely and the staff is exceptional. For the price we paid it was worth it. I am not sure we will be back for a third time but I do not discourage anyone from visiting the Del Mar. Thanks again to the great service staff that made our stay a wonderful one!
