Wow, not so much...

Normally, I don't post many reviews unless something was really good or bad. The Iberostar Paraiso Maya is both.First, the really good:Most of the staff are very friendly and hard working. Lovely people to deal with. Now, the bad (remember, they consider themselves a five star resort and other sites give them 4-4.5 stars:-Who designed these rooms?! I don't know about the other categories, but the junior suites are very poorly designed. It is spacious and has a hammock chair on the balcony. Even with a room by the pool, it is fairly quiet. However, you can't sit out there, because there are so many mosquitoes (hundreds, not exaggerating)! The room is laid out with the entrance, then bathroom, living room, and the balcony. The problem is that there is a small window in the shower that lets in natural light. If it was only into the bathroom, no problem. But, the wall that separates the bathroom from the sleeping area has a huge frosted window. So, if the bathroom light is on, it floods the sleeping area with light. Even just the small window will brighten the room. - The grounds have several water features (ponds, fountains, etc.) that are stagnant and attract more mosquitoes. -You can tell the property is old and not very well maintained. The first night in our room, the ceiling above the minibar area started leaking (not dripping) a stream of water. Turns out it had to do something with the a/c.-They want you to book the sit down dinner reservations on the first night and make it seem like the restaurants are booked for most times. Each time we went for dinner, the restaurants were more than half empty. - The "shopping center" for the five resorts is laughable, at best. More filthy water features and a handful of overpriced souvenir stores.-Food is just OK. This was our first all inclusive in many years, so I don't know if that's the norm.-The beach and ocean is covered in seaweed. Even with heavy haulers removing the seaweed, it was still everywhere. That's probably why the beach area is not very busy. This sucks since we wanted a beach vacation and ended up spending most of the time by the pool.-The kid's club is filthy. We're still here, so I may have more to update when we leave.

Good Experience

I did very much like this hotel although I would suggest that you make sure you upgrade if you come in at the lowest package so you have access to all restaurants , coffee shop area, taco place and free wifi. I had no issues with the food except I wouldn't bother with the japenses restaurant which I did not like at all! There are two buffets which had a ton of options. I also enjoyed the outdoor mall they had on the grounds. I know recently they have had some issues in the news regarding alcohol as well as other realrts however I did not experience anything but great drinks with top shelve liquor (which I requested when ordering my drinks). And I am a drink snob.

All inclusive paradise!

We booked 2 x junior suites with family. Although the suites were bit outdated (shower not working well, leakage shower tubes) housekeeping kept the rooms tidy and clean, and repaired any problems in the room as quickly as possible. The housekeepers were very creative in making up the bed. We got our room upgraded after 5 nights caz initially our room was located just across the concierge desk which was quite noisy ! So we got two new rooms at a more quite location. Perfect deal ! Thanks to concierge Claudia. The all inclusive package was more than complete. Great breakfast with nice and friendly personnel in the restaurants. Always food and snacks and drinks in any bar/ restaurant throughout the whole complex, and also at the beachfront. Dinner restaurants plenty of choice, high classed, not only buffet restaurants but also the specialty restaurants. Our favourite was Geisha restaurant and show cooker Eduardo ! We booked two tours, Xichen Itza and Xcaret with Iberostar tour agent. Our favourite tour guide was Irio, a very passionate tour guide! The animation team Star Friends was outstanding, everyone doing the best to entertain the guests even at the pools. Our favourite Star Friends were Gilmer, Aaron, Ricardo, Moses, Jesus, Diana, Gaby, Christina and more of which I have forgotten the names. Thank you for giving us such great shows and entertainment programs! As a token of our appreciation of this hotel we finally became Golden Members of the Iberostar club ! So we will definitely be coming back to this hotel or one of the other spendid Iberostar hotels in the world !

Great resort, but maybe not for families with small children

We spent a week at Iberostar Paraiso Maya in June. There were four adults in our group and we had one double room in building 61. Originally we had wanted a building closer to the beach but actually liked this location better, we were about half-way between the main lobby and the beach. We found the beds to be a bit small for four adults, so we asked for a rollaway bed which turned out to be a great idea. It took a day or so to get oriented to the layout of the resort. Given the torrential rains, it’s good advice to learn how to walk from your room, to the main lobby while under cover the whole time. The room was clean and everything worked ok. There was a safe in the room and a coffee maker. One thing we noticed what that there were only a small number of accessible power outlets in the room – which was a problem with the number of phones we had. We ended up asking the concierge for a power strip which they were able to provide, it really saved the day. All of the guest buildings have concierges located in the building, this was a huge time saver and they were really helpful (they will help with restaurant reservations, power strip requests, room issues and more…). We did have a few problems with the room. The first was that when the air conditioning was running we would hear a noise which is best described as like a door being slammed shut, this happened for two nights before we mentioned it to the concierge and it was fixed that day – we should have told them sooner. We also heard a lot of noise from the room next to us, and from the hallways, as people would come back at late hours. Our maid was great, please do remember to leave a tip if you are pleased with their service. We did notice that the chairs around the pool did fill up by about 11am, so one of our group would go out to the pool deck before breakfast and place our towels, and other stuff, on some chairs. If you go get to the pool late, note that chairs near the wave pool were always the last to be taken, so look there if you can’t find any other chairs. The resort gives you a towel card for each person in your group, you exchange the card for a towel at the pool and when you return the towel you get the card back for the next day, this system worked well. When on the pool deck keep food out of your bags, we twice saw animals dig into bags to find and eat sealed boxes of cereal. One thing I wish we had known day one is that there is an ice cream bar above the pool bar, it had good ice cream. We have heard recently about possible issues with the alcohol used at the resorts bars. We never had any ill affects after having a drink at the resort, but I did watch the bottles used and wondered where the non-name brand alcohol came from. You can always ask for a specific brand of alcohol and we started doing this at all the bars, it did make a difference in the taste of the drinks. We typically would trip the bartenders for our drinks, at least a dollar or two. Things did get a bit rowdy in the main pool towards the afternoon and the pool bar was sometimes overcrowded around the same time. If I had small children I would think twice about this resort, with the amount of alcohol flowing I’m not sure if families (with smaller children) would enjoy the party atmosphere. The beach was great, the best lunch was the burger bar at the beach, we ate there every day for lunch – cheeseburgers, fries and chicken wings, this place was great. We never had a problem getting a chair at the beach. The buffets were good. We could always find something we liked and learned what food to avoid. We tried most of the themed dinners, the only one we didn’t like was the Japanese restaurant, we found the portions to be extremely small (2 small bites of lobster and 6 small bites of steak was the portion for one person). Everyone at our table went to the buffet straight from the Japanese restaurant. We went to a number of the night time entertainment events at the theater, some were better than other but we enjoyed them all. One night the resort had a number of local vendors displaying their goods near the theater, while they had some interesting items the costs were sometimes sky high, one guy wanted $25USD for a fidget spinner that sold for $3USD in California. We were surprised that many vendors wouldn’t negotiate. We took Lomas transport to/from the airport and opted for the private luxury car ($110USD roundtrip for up to 7 people). Well worth the cost, direct transport to/from hotel and no multiple stops like the “shuttle” type companies often do. We looked into Scuba diving but found the on-site service was too expensive. We had wanted a simple two-tank dive (we were all certified divers) at a cenote, but by the time the on-site Scuba center tacked on all their extra “checkout” ocean dives the cost was into the many of hundreds of dollars per diver, way too much what we had originally wanted. We went to the shopping center that in on the resort property, mostly souvenir shops and food places. We also went to the on-site medical center when my wife fell while on an excursion, the on-site medical seems to provide some basic medical services but will send you to a medical center in Cancun if needed. They offered an ambulance or a cab to take us to the medical center. We opted for the cab since the driver stays with you the entire time, it cost about $130USD (fixed cost) to have the cab stay with us the entire time – well worth it. We did enjoy the Iberostar, the resort was clean, well run and managed. All the staff was attentive and very helpful. Check-in and check-out were fast and efficient.

A Great Time

My family and I (kids aged 11,14,18,and 20) were pleasantly surprised with our choice to vacation in Mexico at the Iberostar Paraiso Maya from 8/4 to 8/11. We booked our trip through Trip Guy. They were a wonderful company-emails were answered quickly and they checked in multiple times to make sure that everything was good with our trip. They booked us a private transfer service through Lomas Travel. When we got into the luxury SUV, the driver presented us with tote bags from Trip Guy filled with a granola bar, water and Pringles potato chips. The care package was a nice welcome. The drive to the resort was was about a half an hour. The lobby and grounds are beautiful and very clean. We did not have a wait to check in. It did take a bit of time, but we were give non-alcoholic sweet drinks, Congos, as we checked in. My older two children were told to drink responsibly, since the drinking age is 18, and were given the red band to show that they could drink. Since my children look young, the employee suggested that they keep a copy of their passports with them at all times to prove their age. No one from the resort questioned them. I can't say enough about the hospitality of all the workers and how hard they all work to keep the resort clean. We enjoyed seeing the animals made out of towels each day made by our housekeepers. We were in building 62 on the 3rd floor. My older two children were across the hall from us since we needed two rooms with two double beds. The reviews made it seem like the resort was huge-we did not find it to be too expansive-it was easy to navigate. It did not take us 10 minutes to walk to the beach as other reviewers have mentioned. We are all able-bodied and it took about five minutes to get there. The beach did have a lot of sea grass due to Hurricane Franklin, but they worked hard to clean it up. The amount of sea grass in the water is not the resort's fault. Most people swam in the waves in front of the Grand Hotel. We used the catamarans twice. To jet ski at the resort is $65 for a half an hour. The wait staff at the beach was attentive. To our delight, on Saturday and Wednesday, a delicious paella was made on the beach and on Thursday, a barbeque was prepared on the beach which included ribs, sausages, chicken, steak, mashed potatoes and corn on the cob. There is a lunch buffet at the beach every day of burgers, hot dogs, chips and guacamole (I thought the guacamole would be superior-it was just okay), french fries, chicken nuggets, salad bar, fruit, ice cream and vegetables for those people who did not want to go to the luch buffet at the Pagoda and the Lindo (we preferred) or Tapatio at the Maya. We liked the breakfast buffet at La Marina. Trip Guy arranged a Dine Around before we got the the resort which is they set up reservations at all the a la carte restaurants the entire 7 nights we were there. We were able to change the reservations which was easy to do-we wanted to go to the french restaurant, but my 11year old daughter was too young (you have to be 12 and for men wearing pants) so we sent my 14 and 11 year olds to the buffet across the lobby at La Marina. The wait staff was very attentive to them and kept them apart from the other diners and always checked in on them. We checked in on them a couple of times and we felt they were completely safe. We did enjoy all of our meals in the resort. My favorite place to go each night was the crepe place in the shopping center where crepes were made in front of you and they had delicious ice creams and sorbets. One night there was even a mariachi band in the shopping center. We enjoyed walking around the grounds, however, we were perplexed as of to why the fountains were not working. There are many fountain pools of still, dirty water. That's really the only thing I would complain about, and that's being petty. There were plenty of activities around the resort. The games at the pool were fun, even just to watch. My family tried archery which was fun. My son really enjoyed the beach volleyball games. There was dancing on the beach around 12 each day. The schedules of the activities could easily be found at the concierge desks, at the entrance to the bridge to the beach, and around the lobby. We really enjoyed the nighttime circus show at the Lindo. Overall, I would highly reccommend this resort for the money. Book with Trip Guy and Lomas Travel for transfers and excursions.
