Our Opinion

The Iberostar Quetzal, is a perfect family-oriented resort geared for families with children. The grounds have a very outdoorsy feel. There is exotic wildlife teeming everywhere, which adds a nice touch to the resort. A lot of the entertainment held are geared more for kids. Great buffet items available. Make sure to check out the Japanese and Steakhouse a la carte restaurants, as they offer quality food and great entertainment. Great pool with plenty of activities to do.

Overview
A stunning hotel, in beautiful natural surroundings, on the white sands of Playacar Beach. Tropical gardens with birds and wildlife, and winding pools complete the picture. The hotel has two distinct halves: the Quetzal, which features colonial-style paintings and furniture, and the Tucan, which has reproductions of carvings from Mayan ruins. The Iberostar offers excellent value and provides travelers with that comfortable home-away-from-home feel. Featuring a Kids Club, refreshing pools, specialty dining, nearby golf, a luxury spa, honeymoon bonuses, and a picturesque beachfront location, this Riviera Maya hotel is ideal for families, couples, and groups.
Location: On the beach, 5 minutes to Playa del Carmen, 60 minutes to Cancun, 45 minutes from the airport.

Another Christmas and New Years at Iberostar Quetzal 2017/2018

We stayed here again for Christmas/New Years’ 2017. There are a few changes since the last time we were here for Christmas/New Years’ in 2014.Playacar Palace was still a five minute walk from the hotel. There is a newer addition with multi-level shopping now but the little kiosks are still there.Taxi to La Quinta Avenida was $7.00USD. That area hasn’t changed at all. The Quetzal check-in process varied depending upon how many people are working up at the front desk and the number of people who were in line at one time. The process for us again was fairly smooth, although (our magnetic key did not work the first time. While they cannot guarantee room reservations, al-a-carte dinner reservations, and additional personal requests, I have to acknowledge they were very accommodating for us. Thank you front desk! They also provided a fruit platter, bottle of wine, and t-shirts as we were returning guests which was very much appreciated. Please note, there is an environmental tax that was just implemented in 2017. For a 10 day stay it was less than $10.00USD. It is a separate charge and the balance is due upon check out.The lobby is still the open air environment with a nice evening breeze. There is a store where you can buy some general stuff like clothes and knick-knacks but it is pretty expensive. The resort is very well maintained. The gym is one of the larger and nicer facilities—treadmills, elliptical, free weights, weight machines, and a yoga studio with additional equipment. The grounds are awesome! There is a jungle to walk through and it is beautiful. The animals are well taken care and I am glad this did not change.Quetzal is renovating some of their buildings. My friend stayed in building 21 (room 2106) and her room was renovated. We stayed in building 23 (room 2351) and ours was not. Our other friend stayed in building 29 (room 2903) and her room was not renovated either. Note that the renovations still do not include a real bed as it is still mattress on a concrete platform. I recommend requesting extra bedding (aka, pillow top) to soften things up a bit. There are still no drawers but there is shelving in the closet where you can put your clothes. The bathroom is the same—roomy shower for at least 2 people but not much room when you walk into the bathroom. The safe was wide enough to place an iPad or smaller laptop.Housekeeping service was good. These ladies really took care of us and made sure we had fresh linens each day as well as no sand on the floor. They made little towel animals for us at night, some with rose petals—it was such a sweet treat. I recommend tipping housekeeping as they work very hard for us.The food selection was better this time. There was more of a selection and the quality of food was better in the buffet. They had labels for most of the dishes. The carving station offered pork, ham, beef, and lamb. There was a sushi station, larger cheese display, and fresh salad with a variety of toppings. Lots of fruit to choose from and a mini ice cream station. The desserts were abundant too. The Mexican food station was as good as last time (tamales, fajitas, empanadas, etc.). However, there was no Mole’. On Christmas and New Years’ Eve, you still need to make reservations, even for the buffet. Also, there is a dress code (men wear pants and women dress up). The buffet had lobster and shrimp, as well as some local fish for choices. There is always choices for dinner. No one goes hungry. There is a new chef and since she arrived two years ago, she has definitely made some changes for the better. Most nights she came out to greet the guests as well as solicited input on food and service. Thank you!The restaurant by the pool opened at 7:00am. Omelets were served starting at 8:00am. While not a big selection to choose from, again, no one went hungry. The main buffet by the lobby opened at 8:00am and had a larger selection. Same with lunch. There was also a grill where you could get hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries. A couple of times they served a special layout of seafood right by the grill. The drinks were not as good this time. We could not get top shelf liquor. It was all local/well alcohol. That’s OK for some drinks. For other drinks not so much. I was disappointed that I could not get a good Margarita. The Pina Coladas were just OK. The Mojitos were terrible (even from the lobby bar). However, the Chocolate Martinis were surprisingly decent. It just varies. The beach is still fantastic. The sand was smooth, white and no rocks. The water was very clear and beautiful and warm. There was hardly and seaweed (sargassum) the entire time we were there. We spent all of our time on the beach, and played a lot of volleyball. We got up early and watched the sun rise while sitting on our chairs. Unfortunately, people still leave their stuff on the chairs and leave for most of the day. Some things never change….The pool water was cold but kids loved it and it was crowded. The Star Friends – While I cannot comment on the little kids program (mine are too old), I did see lots if kids building sandcastles and doing all sorts of fun games. They looked like they were having a great time. The evening shows, starting at 9:30pm and were really, really good this time. The magic show was great, the Rock N Roll show was awesome. Kudos to the woman singer as she could sing-Wow! New Years’ Eve party was fun. The Star Friends really put on a great show. I was surprisingly impressed. My family and friends had a great time as so did a lot of other people in attendance. Overall, my friends really enjoyed their first time here, and so did we again. It is still a really nice resort.

Cool place to stay

The "jungle walk" through the middle of the resort was very unique. The path is uneven and difficult to walk on but you get to see a lot of wildlife like monkeys, peacocks, flamingos, iguanas, tortoise, and birds. The food is very average at best for breakfast but lunch and dinner got a lot better, especially if you ate at one of the restaurants for dinner.

Family trip 2018

Every two years our family travels to a warmer climate to escape the Midwest winters. This year we chose Playa Del Carmen and the Iberostar Quetzal resort. We have stayed with Iberostar in Punta Cana before and were impressed. This resort was no different. The Star Friends were always out and about to start beach or pool games. Our bartender Daniel seemed to able to remember our favorite drink which was a nice touch. The food was okay. Nothing to write home about but more then acceptable for an all-inclusive. They have shows every night if that's your thing. Or if you just choice to relax on the beach you won't be disappointed. Gorgeous sand and water as far as you can see. The hotel looked to be recently remodeled and was very clean. For the money you can't go wrong.

A week of fun in the sun!

My family and I took a much needed vacation to Iberostar Quetzal. We elected to have the all inclusive plan with the hotel. After other trips we learned that all inclusive plans are very kid friendly. In my group was myself, wife, son 1 (17 yrs), son 2 (13 yrs), mother and father. We were very pleased with the rooms (we had 2) cleanliness and logical layout of the entire room. The bathrooms were clean and spacious. Our room had a mini-fridge that was stocked daily (beer, water and juice)! The air conditioning was not what most people from the US would come to expect, but it worked for the time we spent in the rooms. Our days were spent at the ocean, pool, on excursion to the sites or fishing. The pool was clean and not too crowded. The beach was clean sandy (not rocky). The food was up and down. We did have some very good food and some food that was okay but not great. I attached a picture I took with one of the staff we saw every day. He was always helpful with tips, dining and places to visit. The shows we attended were fun and surprisingly educational. There is plenty of exciting wildlife around the hotel to see. I only gave this review 4 out of 5 because of the time share sales pitch. When we were approached to speak with the time share group the meeting was not explained very clearly. It soon became clear that we were being sold a mess of expensive offered we could never use.

Nice resort

Have been to Mexico 7 times, 3rd time at an Iberostar. We previously went to Iberostar Cozumel and Iberostar Paraiso Beach which is pretty much identical to the Quetzal/Tuscan style. Beautiful jungle and beach, lots of animals, but lots of walking. Had an ocean front room on Quetzal which was fabulous and definitely worth it as we have a 2 yr old that likes his afternoon naps so we could put him to bed and still sit at the beach! Having been to Azul resorts with gourmet food the last 2 years we really noticed how poor the food was here..the a la crates were better but this really isn’t a foodie resort. There was always something to eat at any time of the day so you certainly won’t go hungry though! Room was nice and clean for the most part (the contact lens we found under the couch cushion was a little yuck), but we are probably one of the few that has a toddler yank off a cushion to notice stuff like that. Star friends we usually love, which is why we returned to an Iberostar, but this time it didn’t seem like they put much effort into individual involvement. Don’t get me wrong, entertainment was great and there was plenty to do, but I guess we were accustomed to more personal attention. Very close to Fifth Ave in Playa Del Carmen for shopping, or they even have a little shopping centre nearby that was actually in line or cheaper than Fifth Ave. Overall, not a top dollar resort, but for a cheaper vacation it was well worth the money!
