Our Opinion

The Iberostar Quetzal, is a perfect family-oriented resort geared for families with children. The grounds have a very outdoorsy feel. There is exotic wildlife teeming everywhere, which adds a nice touch to the resort. A lot of the entertainment held are geared more for kids. Great buffet items available. Make sure to check out the Japanese and Steakhouse a la carte restaurants, as they offer quality food and great entertainment. Great pool with plenty of activities to do.

Overview
A stunning hotel, in beautiful natural surroundings, on the white sands of Playacar Beach. Tropical gardens with birds and wildlife, and winding pools complete the picture. The hotel has two distinct halves: the Quetzal, which features colonial-style paintings and furniture, and the Tucan, which has reproductions of carvings from Mayan ruins. The Iberostar offers excellent value and provides travelers with that comfortable home-away-from-home feel. Featuring a Kids Club, refreshing pools, specialty dining, nearby golf, a luxury spa, honeymoon bonuses, and a picturesque beachfront location, this Riviera Maya hotel is ideal for families, couples, and groups.
Location: On the beach, 5 minutes to Playa del Carmen, 60 minutes to Cancun, 45 minutes from the airport.

Weddings Are Beautiful!

I have been to this resort 5 times. Once for my wedding and several times after with friends or family. If you are ever looking for a location that has alot to offer than Playa del Carmen is the place for you along with the Iberostar Quetzal. Honestly I was going to complain the first time I went because I was only a princess then and wanted to be directly on the beach. When I opened the curtains in our room I was viewing an amazing jungle scene with pink flamingos and monkeys! Such a gorgeous resort with friendly staff.

Amazing Family Trip - would go back

This hotel has everything that you may want or need. It's clean and spacious and offer high quality drinks, food and entertainment all day long. There was always enough chairs around pool and on the beach - they do a good job of reminding guests not to reserve chairs for the whole day. The design of the hotel makes it seem that you are never surrounded by large crowds. This is a family friendly hotel but if you want to party you can (there is a separate swim up bar which is not part of the main pool - what a fantastic idea!!)Employees are calm, smiling and seem to be enjoying their jobs. This is not always the case with all inclusive resorts that we've been to in the past. Sometimes you want to eat after the evening entertainment and the "midnight" buffet offered adequate choices of hamburgers and other hot dishes - as compared to the Riu's "sports bar" which offers cold sandwiches and nachos. We ere there with a large family group and everyone was satisfied (Even the picky eaters). It's a short walk to the main PlayaCar centre (25 min each way) and we took advantage of this to stretch our legs and do some shopping. Would recommend this place and would go back.

Fantastic Resort and Wedding Location

We had our wedding here and it was truly amazing. The wedding planner made it so stress free and relaxing. Private beach area for the wedding. Only down fall was the hair services, my hair had to be done twice, make up amazing. Everyone working there was so nice and helpful. Very clean Resort. Beach was amazing as well as jungle area with animals. Pool areas for all types. Japanese was by far the best but Steakhouse was excellent as well. Most of the shows were good. Covered walkways from lobby to buffet and theatre.Would recommend for sure. Only a short distance from the awesome playa del carmen shops.

Fantastic resort with a jungle feel and great beach!

We spent a wonderful week here last year (a bit late with the review...). There were a few minor issues, but overall it was a great place! We booked a superior room to be closer to the beach. I had sent in a room request asking to be placed on a top floor (2nd or 3rd) facing inward. Upon arrival, we were told we got a room facing inward in building 22, but on the first floor. It was a bit disappointing since I like to relax on the balcony and it's a bit awkward to do that with people constantly walking by. We went back to reception the following day to see if anything else was available and luckily there was. Marcela (I believe) was extremely helpful and friendly and got us a room in building 21, top floor. ROOM: Both rooms we had gotten were very nice. The only reason I had wanted to change rooms was that I really dislike being on the ground floor. They have a lovely, tropical feel. The beds and pillows are fairly firm, but I had no problem whatsoever sleeping. The AC works great and the ceiling fan definitely helps to keep you cool while sleeping. The cleaning ladies always did a wonderful job. We had Adelaida when we were in building 22 and Socorro in building 21. FOOD: The food was good, though we aren't fussy eaters. The A La Carte restaurants had a special vegetarian menu which I greatly appreciated (since I'm vegetarian). Always lots of choice at the buffets. Yes, the buffets are open-air, but it wasn't uncomfortable. Next to the Quetzal one there's a small waterfall, which was nice to listen to while enjoying our meal. One minor negative was the fact that they didn't offer cappuccinos/lattes at the buffet. Regular coffee was available though. My cup was never empty for long. They had churros at the breakfast buffet, but you'll have to be quick when they put out a fresh batch because they disappear pretty fast. Also plenty of guacamole. I pretty much ate my weight in guacamole morning, noon, and night. It was so good! BEACH: Absolutely stunning beach. Soft sand, turquoise water. There were plenty of seats to choose from with lots of options for shade. We took a walk a bit south past the Sandos resort next door. Beautiful stretch of beach with not too many people. POOLS: We didn't spend a lot of time at the pool but they were very nice. The adults-only one is gorgeous with lots of greenery and trees and nice little "waterfall". It was nicer earlier in the day since later in the afternoon it seemed to get a bit more rowdy. Especially on the days when the "spring-breakers" were there (more on them farther down). The main pool is large, but it's also a bit deep. I had to stand on my tip-toes to keep my head above the water and I'm 5'4". GROUNDS: Beautiful grounds. Loved the "jungle" in the middle of the property. Lots of animals to see; peacocks, agoutis, howler monkeys, loads of iguanas... The resort never felt crowded even though it's not a huge resort. From the lobby to the beach it wasn't more than a 5-10 minute walk for us with lots of stuff to see along the way. The walkways in the jungle area are a bit uneven so if you have any mobility issues, take the paths on either side of the resort which are flat. There's also a group a howler monkeys that make their way around the property. Saw them making visits to various balconies in the middle of the resort that were facing the jungle. SERVICE: Everyone was very helpful and friendly, both in the lobby, the bars and the restaurants/buffets. CONS: I was a bit surprised to find a group of "spring breakers" at the resort. They don't tolerate that sort of behavior so I guess they can't be faulted since that particular group was there with their parents and they probably didn't expect them to get so rowdy. While the resort is large enough that you can find a place to relax away from those types of groups, it was still a disappointment and a nuisance if you wanted to spend time by the pool (in particular the "adults only" one). We are generally more beach-goers, but I get motion sickness from the waves and enjoy the occasional dip in the pool. The adults only pool was gorgeous but our experience in there was not great due to the large group of loud, drunk adolescents. Honestly though it should have been the parents responsibility to make sure they're not getting into trouble. We shouldn't have to be forced to avoid an area in particular because of the bad behavior of others. The water in the showers does tend to go from hot to cold, most of the time it's really not that bad, really more of a minor temperature change. One evening, however, I absolutely needed the water to be cold because I had gotten sunburn that day and the water went from cool to scalding hot. Another issue I had with the bathroom was the set-up of the door. It's a bit awkward trying to maneuver around if the door isn't completely shut. Path leading to beach near Riu was roped off. It wasn't that big of a deal but I did find it odd. On the Tucan side there was a path closest to the Sandos that was open. It would have made getting to our usual beach chairs a little bit easier (we picked ones that were at the end of the resort, away from the action since we like it a bit more quiet). The pros definitely outweigh the cons. It was a wonderful vacation and we wouldn't hesitate to return.
