Our Opinion

The Iberostar Quetzal, is a perfect family-oriented resort geared for families with children. The grounds have a very outdoorsy feel. There is exotic wildlife teeming everywhere, which adds a nice touch to the resort. A lot of the entertainment held are geared more for kids. Great buffet items available. Make sure to check out the Japanese and Steakhouse a la carte restaurants, as they offer quality food and great entertainment. Great pool with plenty of activities to do.

Overview
A stunning hotel, in beautiful natural surroundings, on the white sands of Playacar Beach. Tropical gardens with birds and wildlife, and winding pools complete the picture. The hotel has two distinct halves: the Quetzal, which features colonial-style paintings and furniture, and the Tucan, which has reproductions of carvings from Mayan ruins. The Iberostar offers excellent value and provides travelers with that comfortable home-away-from-home feel. Featuring a Kids Club, refreshing pools, specialty dining, nearby golf, a luxury spa, honeymoon bonuses, and a picturesque beachfront location, this Riviera Maya hotel is ideal for families, couples, and groups.
Location: On the beach, 5 minutes to Playa del Carmen, 60 minutes to Cancun, 45 minutes from the airport.

Fabulous family resort

This was our first trip to the Quetzal but 2nd to Riviera May having previously stayed at the Iberostar Paraiso Lindo, which we also loved. We had 2 reasons for changing: first to escape the onslaught of the 'Spring Breakers' and second because the Quetzal offered adjoining family rooms. I'm pleased to report there was not a single Spring Breaker in sight! So if you're looking for a realxing family/couples holiday without the pool being dominated by drunk teenagers every day then this is the resort for you!Our holiday was perfect from the moment we arrived - our children's room had been decorated with balloons and a chocolate hamper, a very nice touch. We had jungle view rooms which looked onto a beautiful lush forest area with flamingoes, peacocks and ducks and we were visited most days by a family of Howler monkeys on our balcony, much to the delight of my kids. They seemed very tame and docile but we still chose not to get too close, just lovely to observe. The pool area is huge and the water lovely and warm, there's also an adults only pool, sports pool and kids splash pool. We loved the games laid on by the entertainment team each day, they really are fantastic - special mention to Karlos, Lester and Obama and the compere who hosted the evening entertainment was brilliant. The buffet restaurants are great, very good quality and range of choice, you would find it hard to be disappointed. We also ate in the theme restaurants, all of which are good but our favourite was the Japanese for the atmosphere. One of the nice things about the Quetzal's location is the 45 minute stroll along the beach to Playa del Carmen, which is worth a visit, lots of nice shops, bars and restaurants. We also had a trip to Tulum, very nice but only half a day needed with young children but our favourite as always is Xel Ha which is beautiful and a must see.The jungle setting is really what makes this hotel stand out, the wildlife is outstanding and a million miles from any of the resorts near or in Cancun. My only negatives would be that the beach had alot of seaweed the 2nd week which wasn't so nice but the sea itself is beautiful and warm and the sand is very clean, much more so than UK beaches! The staff tried to clear it but not their fault of course. Also there was quite a fight for sunbeds each day, we had to go down and lay towels out at 7am each day, not really what I wanted to do on holiday but otherwise there was no chance of getting a bed with shade. The hotel did try to deal with this but it's a losing battle! I don't really know the answer to that one.Overall a really fantastic resort, plenty to do, beautiful setting, wonderful staff. We will be back!

Surprising hotel

I spent my last Easter holidays at this resort and I really enjoyed it very much.Firstly I was afraid of the animals in the hotel but fortunately they did not bore me a little. The hotel is a mix of forest and beach and there are plenty of sunbeds on the beach. You have lots of shadows in the hotel as you are surrounded by trees, gardens and lakes.Food is marvellous and take care of pastry that is excellent. I booked different restaurants to try another food like " Steak House", "Mexican Hacienda" and my favourit was "MARE NOSTRUM". They have a restaurant open all night and it was good for us as our plane had a delay. They acept to change my room as I was on the ground floor and I really thank them as I felt better at last days.I went to X-Caret and it deserve a visit as it is very enjoyable like the beach (attention to sun), try to go by a little boat (Mexicanita), go to the chapel of Guadalupe and please nearby do not miss the restaurant YUCATERO ( you can find Mexican, Italian and Chinese food). By 6 pm try to get a place for the show as it is outstanding. It is very easy to go to Playa del Carmen by taxi and it costs 100 pesos at the begginning of 5th Avenue and 130 pesos at the end of that main shopping street. You have shops like Tous, Hollister, Victoria Secrets, Michael Kors and nice bars and handycrafts shops. You have to ask for a taxi to the bellboy at the hotel. It is very safe and easy to come back to the hotel. To go to Congo Bongo disco at Playa del Carmen you need not to pay so much in a excursion and it costs only 20 US dollars or 40 Us dollars (barra livre/ open bar) instead of the 80 dollars they ask. I will repeat this trip and this hotel. Go and you will agree on me.Surely you will have a lovely week . The concept of this hotel is great as you are on the beach and on the forest. The only problema is 9 hours by plane but after you are on the Paradise.

Fourth Visit

This was our 4th visit to Iberostar Quetzal. The resort is fabulous, very clean and the beach is amazing. It is really the people who make this resort what it is. Chef Mario does a superior job regarding food service and customer relations. He is present in the various food areas and is very accessible. Talk to him about his background and accomplishments he is amazing. Arturo in the Mexican lunch area by the pool is an outstanding waiter. Guilermo in the buffet at night also is outstanding. Sandra in the Quetzal bar is really great too and she remembers drink orders from night to night. It is curious that we received no welcome gift this year. We got a bottle of wine year 1, Tequila year 2, and Tequila and T-shirts year 3. Nothing at all this year :-(

Amzing Family Holiday easter

The Hotel was in the best location, playa car has a few little shops and playa del Carmen is only 5 mins in a taxi down the private road so no traffic. You could walk if you wanted to. The Beach and hotel grounds were Beautiful. The staff were hard workers and couldnt do enough for you. From the check in to check out all the staff involved throughout our stay were fantastic. All the family including the grandparents and kids age 9/6 had a fabulous holiday and experienced things first time and made lots of memories thanks to the star friends. The kids always looked forward to seeing what the cleaner had made with the towels when we got in, he also left them a bag of crisps one day which was a lovely touch for the kids. The pool was big enough for all to enjoy, and beds were easy enough to get as the staff would not allow beds to be saved. We were there in peak time and never really struggled to get 8 beds close together. The beach was amazing, the staff worked hard to keep it looking good and keep the seaweed at bay. I noticed it was one of the only hotels along the strip that did. Waitress service around the beach and pool was a nice touch. The food in the buffet was great, some picky people would probably complain about choice but if you are adventurous or a plain eater there is something for you. They have different theame nights so I was never bored of the food. The Al la carte restaurants were fabulous. The steak house and Mediterranean were my favourites and the tapenyaki was a brilliant family experience, the kids loved it and food was very tasty. Daytime ent was good fun, you can get away from it if you don't want to get involved but even just sitting and watching was good fun for all. The kids loved to get involved with me doing the aqua fit and beach Zumba as well as pool games. The star friends were great, they were friendly and fun.The evening entertainment staff were very talented but id say the shows need bringing up to date. They were excellent but dated. Overall I would recommend this hotel and Playa Car and ill be going back again as some point.

Great resort with beautiful sandy beach, friendly staff, amazing jungle

We had a great time during our stay at Iberostar Quetzal. We stayed from April 7th to April 14th The weather was pretty good, day time temperatures during our stay were around 30 degrees Celsius and it rained only once but at night. Some days it was windy at the beach. We found the Iberostar shows and staff performance better than in other resorts we visited in the past and we were always looking forward to see the nightly shows. The staff at the resort was always friendly and helpful, specially Karlos from entertainment.WiFi was available throughout the resort and we never had an issue with it.The resort grounds are well kept. In particular, we really liked the small jungle between the pools and the main restaurants and lobby. It was very peaceful. You can see lots of wildlife like: monkeys, flamingos, peacocks, swam, docks, Iguanas, turtles, agouties etc. We also enjoyed that the grounds have two good quality tennis courts and at 8:00 am a tennis pro would provide some basic ball feeding to practice your strokes. This was a pleasant surprise and it was a great way to meet other tennis players in the resort. The ball feeding lasted about 30 min and afterwards the Pro would pair players to play a game. The food was excellent with good selection and quality. The a la carte restaurants we enjoyed most were the Japanese and Italian. Finding reservations for a la carte restaurants was never an issue. The main buffet is open from 7:00 am to 10:00 am (breakfast), 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm (lunch) and from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm (dinner). It would be nice if there is less gap between lunch and dinner at the main buffet. The beach at the resort is one of the best in the area. It is very wide, sandy and there aren't any rocks. The water was clear with beautiful shades of green and blue. Seaweed started to wash up after our 2nd day and the staff was working hard to clean it up but they were not able to keep up with it. They need more staff and equipment to clean it. Beach chair: We always found enough beach chairs and shade and it was never an issue during our stay. The resort is located close to Playa del Carmen. I takes about 30 minutes to walk to Playa del Carmen or 5 minutes by taxi. One night, we walked to Playa del Carmen and enjoyed the street performers located at "Parque Fundadores" close to Quita Avenue and Benito Juarez Avenue. It was such a nice surprise to watch these shows of the Mexican and Mayan culture. It was a great place to seat down, rest and take some pictures. Make sure to tip the street performers. I was amazed at how good they do the street performances. Later we walked along 5th avenue where we dined and shopped. Overall it was a great resort and enjoyed our vacation at this location.
