Our Opinion

The Iberostar Quetzal, is a perfect family-oriented resort geared for families with children. The grounds have a very outdoorsy feel. There is exotic wildlife teeming everywhere, which adds a nice touch to the resort. A lot of the entertainment held are geared more for kids. Great buffet items available. Make sure to check out the Japanese and Steakhouse a la carte restaurants, as they offer quality food and great entertainment. Great pool with plenty of activities to do.

Overview
A stunning hotel, in beautiful natural surroundings, on the white sands of Playacar Beach. Tropical gardens with birds and wildlife, and winding pools complete the picture. The hotel has two distinct halves: the Quetzal, which features colonial-style paintings and furniture, and the Tucan, which has reproductions of carvings from Mayan ruins. The Iberostar offers excellent value and provides travelers with that comfortable home-away-from-home feel. Featuring a Kids Club, refreshing pools, specialty dining, nearby golf, a luxury spa, honeymoon bonuses, and a picturesque beachfront location, this Riviera Maya hotel is ideal for families, couples, and groups.
Location: On the beach, 5 minutes to Playa del Carmen, 60 minutes to Cancun, 45 minutes from the airport.

Highlights

howler monkeys do howl !

This was our fourth Iberostar and probably 12th all-inclusive resort. We give the resort 5 stars even though we noticed some obvious flaws. We still love the resort and really appreciate its personnel's hard work, well-maintained grounds, decent food and drinks, amazing wildlife, magnificent beach, and - my favorite! - bright multicolor buildings’ exteriors. However, there were some upsetting things. First, beach chairs need immediate replacement. In fact, we’ve never seen so dirty and torn beach chairs (picture attached) in any resort. The staff makes attempts to clean the chairs, but the only solution would be to replace them.Second, howler monkeys do howl ! They woke us up every morning at four and then again at about 6:30-7. It’s not just one roar – those are series of extremely loud and frightening roars. If you can wake up, roll over, and fall back asleep – that’s probably OK for you. But if you are a light sleeper – that’s a real torture. Our advice: try to get a room closer to the beach if you are a light sleeper. The closer to the beach, the quieter the room will be. Also, the monkeys are regular visitors on the balconies of the 3rd floor – OK with us, but not everyone might like that.Third, there were tiny ants in our room. Not that that bothered us much, you can’t even notice them until you accidentally squash one - the smell of a squashed ant is not very pleasant.Fourth and the last one. On more than several occasions, we were approached by the resort personnel who asked us to give them a maximum score on resort surveys. Isn’t this against the resort policy? Most of them work hard and deserve a positive feedback, and we don’t mind leaving good reviews to those who deserve it. But this solicitation of a maximum score was a little annoying.Tip: If you lost something, look for this item in Lost&Found not only in Quetzal, but also in Tucan resort. Your item could easily get there – something that happened to us.

Awesome Family Trip

I just returned from a week vacation at the Quetzal... amazing resort. We traveled as a family and we spent most of the time at the pool. The Japanese dinner we had was very delicious and we really enjoyed watching the cook prepare our food in front of us. Loved all the animals we saw and the entertainment was more than we expected. We have already decided to return for a 50th birthday celebration in 2018.

Playing on the Beach

This was my first trip to Mexico, other than Tijuana, and that doesn't really count in my book. My sister and her husband have made staying at the Iberostar Quetzal an annual tradition and this year I joined them. The location is on a beautiful beach and we spent plenty of time in the water and relaxing under the shade. The food in the specialty restaurants is fantastic. I highly recommend the Bonsai "experience" that includes watching the chef prepare the meal right in front of you. The regular buffet restaurants have average to good food. Don't miss the ice cream. It's wonderful. One of the best parts of staying at the Iberostar is the staff. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. This is the perfect place to stay if you want to relax. It's beautiful and has everything you need. I had a great time and plan to return.

Jungle Paradise

I visited this hotel November 18-24 2016. Weather in November was perfect. I liked the location of this hotel. Close to Cenotes, Xel-Ha, Tulum, Playas De Carmen, Isla Mujueres and you can use the sister hotel as well. The beach location is very clean, white sands, blue waters, lot's of fun activities, karaoke, zumba, pool basketball or relax under one of there cabanas, pool very large area, lot's of room for all, plenty of bars, excellent shows, cigar store, great food and service. This hotel is very clean. Hotel has a sports bar but lacks a Disco dance club after shows are over. The grounds are beautiful. The rooms may need to be upgraded, bathroom has a nice shower. You can take a short walk to the right of hotel to but a Starbucks coffee, buy mosquito spray (highly recommend much lower cost than hotel), buy gifts good prices. Grab a taxi to Playas de Carmen $7 dollars one way and it's very safe. Do not use hotel phone in room. I was charged 50 pesos for a 19 second accidental call that never went through. Front desk should be more welcoming to guests in my opinion during check in process and when the guests are not aware of fees like this accidental call. Buy a calling card in advance or walk down to lobby and have the guest service people connect your calls from front desk. Ask for a room closer to pool area and beach. Visit as many sight as possible. So many wonderful places to visit. Highly recommend a trip to Isla Mujueres (snorkeling tour) beach is the best lot's of shops, use casa de cambo or in Playas de Carmen to exchange your money no commission charged. Use sun screen, bug spray and stay hydrated. Enjoy.

Iberostar Tucan y Queztal

Just returned home from a week at the Queztal, we originally booked the Tucan, but our room choice was bot available as they were renovating that building. We had the ocean view room, 2031. Very nice room, very clean and comfortable for our family of 2 adults and one child. The house keeping staff does a great job. The view from the room is fantastic. The resort is nice, food good - not great. But the staff is amazing. Excellent service. The Star Friends do a great job. They make sure to visit with you between activities, always remembering your names. Very nice.Beach is great! We did the afternoon snorkel trip that leaves right from the beach. Highly recommend it. Leaves at 3pm, back by 5pm. Nice boat ride there and back we saw a lot of fish including a turtle and stingray. It was a good experience for my daughter and I! As many have noted the resort has a lot of animals, monkey, agouti, coati, iguanas, peacocks, flamingos, etc... Fun to watch. We stayed at the iberostar paraiso maya last year and chose this hotel because of the ocean front room option. I would say the food at the Maya is better other than that we enjoyed the Queztal. This is just personal preference and many will argue with me, but probably would not go back unless we got the ocean front room again, but many people go there just for the jungle view...
