Our Opinion

The Iberostar Quetzal, is a perfect family-oriented resort geared for families with children. The grounds have a very outdoorsy feel. There is exotic wildlife teeming everywhere, which adds a nice touch to the resort. A lot of the entertainment held are geared more for kids. Great buffet items available. Make sure to check out the Japanese and Steakhouse a la carte restaurants, as they offer quality food and great entertainment. Great pool with plenty of activities to do.

Overview
A stunning hotel, in beautiful natural surroundings, on the white sands of Playacar Beach. Tropical gardens with birds and wildlife, and winding pools complete the picture. The hotel has two distinct halves: the Quetzal, which features colonial-style paintings and furniture, and the Tucan, which has reproductions of carvings from Mayan ruins. The Iberostar offers excellent value and provides travelers with that comfortable home-away-from-home feel. Featuring a Kids Club, refreshing pools, specialty dining, nearby golf, a luxury spa, honeymoon bonuses, and a picturesque beachfront location, this Riviera Maya hotel is ideal for families, couples, and groups.
Location: On the beach, 5 minutes to Playa del Carmen, 60 minutes to Cancun, 45 minutes from the airport.

Highlights
  • Lush, tropical grounds with birds and animals

Standards have dropped

Just returned today from an 14 day enjoyable holiday at Iberostar Quetzal, but sorry to say the standards have dropped. It is our 5th time at this hotel and we have seen a vast difference. The Americans seem to use it as a holiday to try and drink more than each other. They smoke and drink in the swimming which is full of young children, I thought that was the idea of the swim up pool. The Mexican restaurant is awful now and the menu is pathetic, hence the reason you can get a booking there at any time. The entertainment is good but at the end of the show the lounge clears within 5 minutes, it possibly be that the play the same Mexican music every night.

Good experience for 1st time all inclusive

We stayed at the Quetzal in October with my family. It was an overall good experience, we had our room in building 21 which was very close to the pool and beach but unfortunately a little bit away from buffets at main restaurants but the daily walks, through the beautiful jungle with animals of all kinds, were worth it. The beach is perfect, it'a that kind of beach you get on your mind when thinking about the Caribbean Sea. The food was good enough it was not perfect but we always found something to eat. The best restaurants for us were the Mare Nostrum and the Steakhouse. The animation team in the hotel is the best, it's incredible how good they work. Special thanks to Gilberto, Itzel, Jefe, Alan and Dani Boy, we really enjoyed every activity with you from bingo to Zumba. We will definitely come back to Iberostar Quetzal.

AWESOME BEACH

This was a great girls trip. Check in was easy. We arrived before check in time and they stowed our luggage until we could get our room. We had lunch in the buffet and then received our keys. All of the staff were professional, friendly, and courteous. The pool area is crowded with chairs and hard to maneuver, but who cares because the beach was awesome!! Very large beach with white sand and plenty of shade for those of us who are fair skinned. The ocean was so clear you could see the bottom all the way to shoulder deep. The room was nice and clean with a sitting area and balcony, but the bathroom was small. It only had a one sink vanity, but a good walk in shower. The a la carte restaurants were good with Italian being the best. You only get 3 reservations ahead of time and have to make reservation daily thereafter. We actually got in the restaurants without a reservation later in the week. The buffet was small and didn't change much all week. Overall, great atmosphere, staff, and beach. Would recommend.

Great resort overall

My husband and I stayed here from Oct. 13 - Oct. 20. We had a lovely visit and really enjoyed many things:Beach - Palapas are amazing, lots of seating though people put their towels down early in the day so if you want a shady spot, get there early. Volleyball, Zumba...tons of activities for adults and kids. Great wait staff and food options if you want to bum all day on the beach.Food -- Medicore. The food at the beach bars was pretty good but limited selection. The Japanese and Mediterranean a la carte restaurants were our favorite. The buffet food was fairly bland, overall. Not bad for the many tastebuds they have to please but not as good as other resorts we've stayed in. Food is always served at a good temperature though and changed out promptly when things run out.Grounds -- Best part by far. Nowhere else offers the jungle atmosphere and wildlife you get here. The jungle walk is lit up at night too, which can be a beautiful way to cap off your evening. Rooms -- Always kept clean and restocked well, from towels to the minifridge. There are not liquor dispensers at this hotel but that's OK. The rooms are a bit dated but cozy. Great balconies with terrific views. We were in building 22 so it was close to the beach but far away from the lobby and restaurants. Still loved it. Beds were firm (my preference!) but the pillows were, too.Drinks -- I'm not a big drinker so a cocktail or two is plenty for me but I felt they were a little weak and bland. Don't be afraid to ask for extra liquor if you like your drink strong. All the bartenders were accommodating and friendly. Wait staff was great, from the lobby to the theatre to the beach and pool.Pool -- Great for kids and families. Plenty to do, great places to sit. We didn't do the pool bar but sounded like a lot of fun. Watch the steps! They drop off quick into the 5 foot area.Entertainment & Activities -- So much fun! If you have kids, they'll never be bored. Star Friends keep everyone active. There is something for everyone -- yoga, water aerobics, Bingo, archery...If you like being active, you'll find something that interests you. But you don't have to participate either! They're all free and optional so it's great to have them available. Staff -- Friendly. Accommodating. Love the entertainment team -- they always check in to make sure you're having fun. Did have someone help us book our a la cartes upon arrival but it turned into a bit if a sales pitch and we politely declined. Getting around -- There are plenty of taxis outside the lobby if you want to hitch a ride to 5th Ave or do some shopping or eating off the resort. Don't waste your time in the gift shop -- so overpriced. You can always walk about 6 or 7 minutes down the Playacar neighborhood to the Plaza where there's a little mall and lots of local shops, too. All in all, we enjoyed our stay. It's a great fit for families and couples and anyone else.

Wonderful getaway

We have stayed at larger resorts and this time wanted to try this smaller one as the nature and beach really drew us. When we arrived (around noon) we were created by Roberto who was very friendly and wanted to get our dinner reservations after we checked in. We checked in quickly and were in building 21 top floor(I had requested a building by the pool/beach upper level) and this was bang on..loved it. We were able to get our room right away which was fantastic! Now for Roberto...as nice as he was, I informed him I had our dinners prebooked (via email) do he got our tickets then came then sale pitch. (We have heard this at other resorts, different chain and even went to one in Jamaica) after telling him we were not interested and why he tried telling us Iberostar isn't the same and it would only be an hour or so (a waste of our time as we weren't interested) he said we'd get 2 fee massages or iberostar cash or 2 day car rental and he gets points if we sign up. We again say no and his mood changes from extremely happy/friendly to almost pouty. Asked us if we changed our mind if we'd come to him. (Not happening but ok) Room: great, clean. Well decorated, loved the shower, iberostar creams/shampoo and body wash great. They also have pump soap/shampoo on wall in shower but not as good. Towels replaced..beds made and chips and nuts left each day. Fridge stocked with pop/beer/water/orange juice *first 3 days only. 2 big bottle in cupboard with coffee maker. No issue with air conditioning and huge fan over beds. Beds-ok for laying on but we found them hard after sleeping night after night. Staff-amazing. We were always greeted with a smile. Had our regular servers at buffet (Dante and Jesus) awesome gentlemen. Star team really active..Jefte sat with us on our first lunch and we got to know about him and he us. Staff there are always working... wait staff at the pool working all day carrying trays with drinks all up and down remembering each order kudos to the two ladies we ment working there. Activities: star team always have something going on..iron man competition/ninja warrior etc. You get get basketballs and ping pong equipment from then towel hut. Pools are awesome..there is the big main one and a smaller one. The big one is deep so we took noodles and a float ring. Cheaper to bring your own but floaters can be bought there. You do have to get your chairs early but not at the crack of dawn. Beach: 🌴beautiful..amazing! Clear water...soft Sand. Chairs here can get filled up epically if u want shade. There are some days there was waves that Were fun to jump in other days it was calmer but still fun.Food: I read a lot of reviews about this and a lot saying it wasn't good. Was it the best? No...was it the worse? No. We have been to larger high end resorts that of course had huge selections etc but here we found having the right server made a huge difference. There wasn't a huge selection but there was more then enough choices and flavours were really good. Our son loved the ice cream bar or soft serve at the 2 restaurants by the pool. They also cook hamburgers/hotdogs/fries outside by the beach so you can go from pool/beach to lunch and back again. We ate at the Japanese (really enjoyed it) Mexican (enjoyed that too) and Steakhouse (it was ok but I found my steak had more chewy pieces then it should have) Room service-we had twice and it arrived within 30mins or less. First time the order was wrong(hotdogs instead of hamburgers and 2 orders of chicken nuggets instead of 1 but we didn't care. 2nd time it was cotrect. You can order bottles of wine with your food too. Jungle: explore it. Loved it. Go over to Tucan side and see the monkies that hang out on top of building 14. Peacocks and other wildlife roam the grounds. Shopping: there's a small shop in lobby. You can also go to the gate of the resort and go to the right...down a way to the left is a small shopping area and Starbucks. Barter with the little shops you will get a better deal. Over all we really enjoyed the resort. It wouldn't be for people that wanted to party (no disco but sports bar) or a really high end experience but if you want a friendly, warm resort with great staff and a super beach I'd try it out. We ment people that have been going there for years. Would we go back? Yep 🐒😁🥑
