Our Opinion

The Iberostar Quetzal, is a perfect family-oriented resort geared for families with children. The grounds have a very outdoorsy feel. There is exotic wildlife teeming everywhere, which adds a nice touch to the resort. A lot of the entertainment held are geared more for kids. Great buffet items available. Make sure to check out the Japanese and Steakhouse a la carte restaurants, as they offer quality food and great entertainment. Great pool with plenty of activities to do.

Overview
A stunning hotel, in beautiful natural surroundings, on the white sands of Playacar Beach. Tropical gardens with birds and wildlife, and winding pools complete the picture. The hotel has two distinct halves: the Quetzal, which features colonial-style paintings and furniture, and the Tucan, which has reproductions of carvings from Mayan ruins. The Iberostar offers excellent value and provides travelers with that comfortable home-away-from-home feel. Featuring a Kids Club, refreshing pools, specialty dining, nearby golf, a luxury spa, honeymoon bonuses, and a picturesque beachfront location, this Riviera Maya hotel is ideal for families, couples, and groups.
Location: On the beach, 5 minutes to Playa del Carmen, 60 minutes to Cancun, 45 minutes from the airport.

Highlights
  • Lush, tropical grounds with birds and animals

Excellent again

My husband and I are staying here for the fifth time and it is excellent again. Nice superior room at the swimming pool side, very friendly staff, excellent Star friends animation team, good food. And I discovered in the gym the excellent yoga-, streching- and pilatesclasses from fitness-instructor Luciana! Her classes are very good (as well as her aqua fitness lessons) and she gives good instructionsWe really love this Iberostar resort! Jacqueline (The Netherlands)

Third time and a few changes

Iberostar Quetzal is one of our favorite resorts within Playa Del Carmen. And Playa Del Carmen is one of our favorite destinations. This was our third time as this resort, with the last time being 3 years ago. We noticed a few changes since then…..The Mascara nightclub/disco is now a sports bar. Bummer! We miss being able to go dancing without leaving the resort. The sports bar that took its place is nothing to brag about; it is very small and occupies only a fraction of the building that was once the disco. The bicycle tour was eliminated from the activities schedule and they no longer have their fleet of bicycles.Internet is now free, whereas we previously had to purchase.Otherwise it’s still the same wonderful resort, and these comments are updated from my last review:QUETZAL vs. TUCAN: for some reason it is set up as two resorts….. the Quetzal rooms are on one side of the resort; the Tucan rooms on the other side are identical. Most of the shared amenities (pool, theatre, etc.) are in the middle. If you were asking “which side should I choose”, my answer would be “it doesn’t matter; it’s really all the same resort”.ROOMS: Our room was very nice. We loved our balcony overlooking the “jungle”, and that the balcony was well-covered so that we could still enjoy it on a rainy day without getting wet. A/C was not cooling the room very well, so we called the front desk and they sent someone to reprogram the thermostat, and afterwards it worked okay. Room contains a coffee maker (we didn’t use), and the mini-fridge was restocked every day with bottled water, soft drinks, and beer. There is no clock or alarm clock in the room!! FOOD: the food was very good. We didn’t try any of the restaurants because we were happy with the selection at the buffet. There is food available almost around the clock at various places within the resort. Surprisingly the buffet stays open to serve leftover dinner until around 4am.NATURE/ WILDLIFE: the resort is built around what seems like a tropical rainforest and wildlife sanctuary. So much interesting wildlife…..turtles, flamingos, peacocks, monkeys, and many other little animals. MOSQUITOS: we’ve traveled to this area more than a dozen times, and never one bite. But this time the mosquitos were a problem at the theatre during the evening show, but not during the day or around the pool and beach area. Hopefully this was a just a fluke created by the weather?SMOKING: this resort does an excellent job of maintaining a smoke-free atmosphere, and at the same time having sufficient designated areas for smokers. Of course there is no smoking in any of the rooms, but the balcony is ok. Around the pool, there are various sections in which sand-filled clay pots are placed by the chairs to serve as ashtrays. The Theatre is non-smoking, but there is a separate covered smoking area, from which to watch the evening show. ACTIVITES: excellent activities lineup! You can grab an Activities Schedules from the display right next to the towel shack by the pool, and they are available in 5 or 6 different languages. There is something going on almost every hour……. aqua gym, darts, air rifle, horseshoes, beach volleyball, water polo, bingo, etc. A few activities each day are labeled as “tournaments”, and the winners are presented with a certificate or medal at the theatre, just before the evening show. Speaking of the theatre, the evening shows are pretty good. I really enjoyed the pre-show, which involves guest participation.POOL: The pool is beautiful and spacious, with several different sections of the main pool. There is plenty of seating around the pool, and the BEST chairs I’ve ever seen. The chairs are very sturdy and made of a nice mesh fabric that dries quickly and you don’t stick to the chairs. Most of the chairs are shaded by little thatch roofs and with built-in side tables. Very nice! Also there is a separate “sports” pool for water polo, water basketball. And an “adult-only” pool with swim-up bar is tucked away in a private area that’s like a little tropical paradise. Self-serve soda and juice machines at the pool bar are very convenient. They now serve Coke products instead of Pepsi!!EXCURSIONS: I am pretty sure the Riviera Maya has the best selection of excursions than any other beach destination in the world. Anything you could want…..history, adventure, nature, water, nightlife. PLAYACAR PLAZA: a shopping center is just a short walk down the street, and even a Starbucks. BICYCLES: the resort no longer has bicycles, but you can rent them from a place located just inside the gate of the Riu Tequila (a few hotels down the street). The cost is $5 USD for a half-day, and they provide a bicycle lock as well. A lovely bicycle path runs along the main drag of Playacar and all the way into the town of Playa del Carmen (10-15 minutes by bicycle). There are sidewalks on each side of the street – the narrow side is for pedestrians only and is marked “no bicycles”. The wider path on the other side of the street is marked for “bicycles”. I would not hesitate to recommend this resort for families, couples, or singles. Unfortunately we may not return because we prefer all-inclusive resorts with a nightclub/disco, but those too are getting harder to find.

Animacion Excelente

Its been a few days that we came back from Playa and Im still thinking about the good times I had with my family at this resort. I traveled with my wife and 2 daughters( 5 and 8 years old) .This was our first time here. From the moment we arrived a young man named Angel(front desk) helped us out with a simple check in process and he had a room for us exactly where we wanted. The entire hotel is fantastic. The grounds are well kept. The animals were such an entertainment for our kids and us too ( by the way those are NOT large rats people should do a little research before posting). The restaurants were absolutely incredible for the price we paid. There are many options. I really cant understand people here who said that the food was repetitive. I could make hundreds of combinations of dishes with the same food they served every night only at the buffets. I mean you can chose to have Mexican food or pasta or junk hamburgers and fries or a vegetarian meal and on top of that they feature different cuisines every other night like Japanese or Spanish at this buffets. On top of that you can also make reservations at the a la carte restaurants that are inside the resort. We only ate at the Japanese one and we really enjoyed it. We missed our reservation at the Mediterranean one night but were very happy to attend the buffet again.Rooms were clean by a very nice lady on building 24. She would leave notes and snacks for the kids. very nice of her. The beach was also incredible. blue water , white sand. and the algies well thats part of the ocean and people do pick them up everyday.I think the part we liked the most about our trip was definitely the Star friends team who not only work very hard but were able to keep us entertain day and night everyday day we stayed at Iberostar Quetzal. I really wanted to highlight Gabriel ,Eduardo, Jefte , ,Ivan bingo bingo chocolate , Gilberto , Jesus also all the professional dancers who unfortunately I didn't get to know by name but were phenomenal performers every night and we would see them practicing during the day as well. The night shows really blew my mind. We were not expecting such a professional high level performance. The kids and us loved it every night. My only feed back would be to have a night where all guests could dance as well for a few hours not only at the end. ( perhaps you guys already do that but we missed it)We are definitely going back. Sorry for not remembering other names such as the guys who work the front taking your bags or calling you cabs, the hostess and waiters at all the restaurants .....everyone was really nice and professional. hats off to all of you. We cant wait to go back.

Great Family Vacay

Good hotel with good service. Food/drinks were good. Mexican food restaurant was our favorite dinner. Lots of Europeans, which for us Texans, not the friendliness we like. Beds were good, but pillows were terrible, pack your own! The adult pool was fun, Diego and Santos are great bartenders. Our favorite servers were Ulises and Lucely. We stayed at the pool mostly, it is beautiful. We love the beach, vendors were sketchy, we never felt unsafe, just not a lot of security around beach.Spa was nice.
