Our Opinion

A top selling resort that is popular for weddings and honeymoons. Also family oriented with a great kids program. Like most Bahia Principe Resorts, you generally get excellent service. Transat holidays has a representative on site which is convenient. Beach is a bit rocky so make sure you bring your water sandals. Highly recommended. Also check out the sister resorts next door, Grand Bahia Principe Coba and Grand Bahia Principe Tulum.

6th visit still amazing.

We normally go first 2 weeks in December, but this time went for 2 weeks in November. After an 8 hour delay from Manchester, we arrived around midnight, this is our 6th visit to this resort and we couldn't have been happier with the resort, room, food, drinks or the staff. We stayed in block 53 which was great for closer access to the lobby, not that we minded walking, we only caught the buggies when going to Sian Ka'an or Tulum. We love this hotel, 5* all the way, loved the now adult only infinity pool, drinks service was brilliant, our favorite restaurant was the Alux we went twice, also gala night on Saturday was better at the Sian Ka'an than akumal but that is our opinion. The entertainment was brilliant, loved the Jersey Boys and the Divas. We recommend a trip out to Akumal, caught the collectivo cost 20 pesos (£1.00) 10 min trip, recommend Lol-Ha restaurant for lunch, amazing food and drinks, not expensive. We will definitely be returning.

Family Wedding

I wouldn't recommend this resort at all. Suite at adult only building was okay but extremely loud at night. When we complained several times to front office, only then after two hours they able to get it quiet. My comment is where was our twenty four Butler services?Overall Service is okay. It's Definitely NOT five star. I do have to recommend Corals Restaurant Manager. He went out of his way. Breakfast was fine.Lunch and Dinner was a disappointment.Overall Food is three out of ten.Just my opinion.Overall I would research other places in Mexico if you really want to stay there.

Amazing holiday, hotel and people - already recommended to ALL my clients!

First time at this resort, amazing from start to finish. Anyone complaining has nothing better to do. Things can and sometimes do go wrong but hand on heart we had a wonderful time and did not want to go home. Infact everyone heading home that day felt the same. We went with Thompson and the reps were fab and very informative. The food was of a high standard and the choice was immense. We stayed at the Akumal and had the option of visiting the other sister hotels - we definitly chose the best for our needs. The hotel staff were welcoming and very helpful. The evening entertainment could have been better in that it could have gone on until at least 11 pm and for some people thehotel bar closed to early (11pm) I am not a drinker so it did not bother me - although there is a 24hour bar that could be used. More entertainment in the evening and everything would be spot on. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED :)

Absolute paradise!

Wow, what a place. This was the best hotel we have ever stayed at. Everything was just perfect. Arrival: Flew with Thomson on the Dreamliner, best plane we've flown on. Plenty of leg room, comfy and was well looked after by the crew members. Complimentary alcoholic or soft drinks throughout the flight, a chicken dinner with wine and afternoon tea later in the flight. Good films and tv programmes as part of the entertainment on board. Crew also gave good advice on what to do when you arrive at Cancun. Upon arrival at Cancun airport the bags took quite a while to come, but the pilot did say there was 3 other international flights arriving at similar time to us, so we were given a heads up. Other than that, straight through customs and security onto our transfer coach. The journey took about 1hr 30mins but well worth this transfer time to this gem of a hotel. Greeted by friendly staff who offered us drinks when checking in. Glass of Cava for my girlfriend and a beer for myself, but you could ask for anything. Rooms: Prior to travel, we emailed the hotel asking for a room on the top floor and with a sea view. This request was acknowledged and was exactly what we got. We stayed in Villa 55, room 22 and was pretty much right in the middle of the Akumal complex, so wasn't much of a walk to anywhere. The rooms were very spacious, with a decent sized balcony which was nice to sit out in the morning looking over the palm trees towards the sea. The bathroom had a jacuzzi bath with shower over it, hair dryer and complimentary toiletries. There was plenty of storage, free to use safe, iron and ironing board, seating area, table and chairs and a very very large 4 poster bed. The mini bar is also free to use and was stocked up every day without fail. Air conditioning and fan worked well. Room was cleaned well everyday. We ordered room service a few times via the app and was very good. Didn't take long to arrive. We also ordered an aromatherapy candle which was lit for us, a very nice touch.Grounds: The Akumal hotel itself is very large but not too big that you can't walk from one side to another. However, when you add the other 3 hotels and the Hacienda into the equation, it's massive! The carts that take you places are very good and regular. The grounds are very well maintained and you always find someone looking after them, or cleaning something. There is plenty of wildlife just walking around: Iguanas, Coati, Racoons, Birds. They're harmless and you get advised not to feed them as it messes up their diet, but some people did and the animals swarmed around them. There were 4 different pools at this hotel. The main pool, with the swim up bar and located just outside the lobby. This got quite busy and hard to get a sun bed with a brolly. Then there was the activity pool, which was our favourite. There was music playing, plenty of games going on with the fantastic animation team and was easy to get a sun bed with brolly. This was closest to our room and was located right next to the 24hr snack bar. There is also the adults only infinity pool which was by far the busiest. Wayyyyy too many adults 😂 haha. The final pool is like 3 little jacuzzi pools linked together. This was nice and peaceful with its own little bar. The beach was very nice and well maintained. The wave breakers in the sea are much needed as the current is very strong. The Hacienda is good for shops, sports bar for the football and there is a casino here. Service: Wow... The service here is impeccable, proper 5 star. The staff here can't do enough for you and treat you like royalty. Everyone has a smile on their face and always give you a friendly 'hola'. No matter where you are in the resort, someone's always there to ask if you need anything or would like a drink. The carts sometimes just randomly stop and ask if you're going to the same destination and you can just jump on. Food/Drink: The main buffet is outstanding, great service, so much variety and something different every night. Never got any cold food as some people say. Always a seat in the huge dining area. Make sure you go here on Saturday for the lobster. The 24hr snack bar was perfect for a spot of lunch. They have premium drinks all around the hotel with amazing cocktails. We booked 5 a la cartes via the hotels app which was easy to do with no problems. 1) Rodizio. This was sooooo good with the skewers of meat that they bring round to your table and are cooked to perfection. We enjoyed it that much we booked it again for later in our stay. The service was excellent, make sure you try the raccoon and monkey 😉. This is just a joke by the waiters obviously. 2) Tequila. Again, this was an amazing Mexican restaurant and located at the Tulum hotel. As soon as you arrive, they offer you their signature drink which was a margarita (so nice). Food was amazing, soup in a stone bowl and lovely Mexican mains. There is a mariachi band that goes round playing and give you Mexican hats to wear as they take your photo for you. Tequila shots are obviously given out with so many flavours. They also gave us a special dessert of a chocolate mousse kind of thing shaped in a heart, which was a nice touch. 3) Dolce Vita. Again, wonderful food and service. Salmon for main was amazing and the white chocolate dome with ice cream in the middle for dessert was lush.4) Medditeraneo. This one was at Coba and upon arrival, they told us they had a special table for us which we thought they'd say to everyone. Went round the corner and there was rose petals scattered on the table which was a lovely touch. Marcos, the waiter was excellent and recommended the Lamb. What a recommendation it was, the Lamb was amazing and cooked to perfection. 5) Arlequin. This was the poshest a la carte with a 'no shorts' dress code. The food here was again impeccable. They gave you a special appetiser of a caviar dish. Lobster soup was very good and the mignon steak and Lamb was amazing. Creme brûlée and apple pie for dessert... Yum! Activities & Excursions: We booked all our excursions before we went and so glad we did. We booked Xplor, Xcaret and Xel-Ha as a package through there own website. This is so much cheaper than booking through Thomson and you just get on the Collectivo (local bus) from the highway. These buses are really, really cheap and very safe. Just tell the driver where you want to go and they'll drop you off there. Xplor was the best, very well organised and we got some amazing photos and videos from our GoPro. Xcaret was also very good, and is a long day so don't worry if you don't get there early. The animals here are amazing and well looked after. Xel-Ha is a lot more relaxing and more for snorkelling. We also booked Coco Bongos and transport through Thomson and went for the gold ticket which is highly recommended as the dance floor gets very very busy. Unlimited premium drinks from your own waiter and you wont have an empty drink all night. Best night out ever. Just be prepared to get back at 5am! Chichen Itza is another trip we booked through Thomson and again highly recommended. This is very interesting and the tour guides were very knowledgable and fun. You stop off at a cenote and town after the ruins. On the way back they bring round massive bottles of tequila and keep your drinks flowing. Kind of turned into a party bus for some people which a good end to the day. We also took the collectivo to Akumal beach to swim with the turtles. This was amazing. Ignore all the tour guides, you don't need one. We hired a life jacket and locker from the dive shop and went into the sea ourselves. Saw a barracuda, sting ray, loads of fish and turtles! We also took the collectivo into Playa Del Carmen for shopping. Only costs you 80 pesos for 2 people. Which is about £4. Very cheap for a 30 minute journey. The evening entertainment is very good, shows every night. Make sure you go to the Hacienda on a Thursday night for the fiesta night, amazing. Games, rodeo, show, candy floss, drinks, food. Such a fun night. Overall, we cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. It is truly amazing. You won't be disappointed.

  • Miguel A :
Great resort!

The resort has great instalations, the pool is pretty big and with a bar on top of it. The several bars that are all around the resort, provide with everything we need in this resort. The customer service is reasonable, and the rooms are also reasonable. We has some problems with the bathroom sewers, because it clogged up and the water started to come out of the toilet, we had to change the room. The foid has a great variety, and it was very good. In geral this resort is a great place for who wanys to relax, and enjoy the warm waters and the lovely beach tgat Akumal has to offer. Thanks for the experience.
