Our Opinion

A top selling resort that is popular for weddings and honeymoons. Also family oriented with a great kids program. Like most Bahia Principe Resorts, you generally get excellent service. Transat holidays has a representative on site which is convenient. Beach is a bit rocky so make sure you bring your water sandals. Highly recommended. Also check out the sister resorts next door, Grand Bahia Principe Coba and Grand Bahia Principe Tulum.

Excellent hotel

We stayed in block 48 - which is really close to the reception - very handy as my mother has mobility issues. We like the main theatre bar, as from 5.30 -6.30 there was canopies and champagne - help yourself. We ate early around 6.30 and then back to this bar area. You could stand at the bar to be served top brand drinks - or sit down and a waitress would take yourorder. We found this to be brilliant. Anyone who moans about the food has got issues. We ate 13 nights out of 14 in the buffet. Arrived around 6.30, food piping hot and great selection. Wine, champagne, whatever you wanted to drink. We ate at the Mikado once and that was lovely too.We ate lunch at the restaurant by the Coral bar - by the pool marked activities - which actually wasn't, they have exchanged the quiet pool and the activities pool around but haven't changed the noticeboards. You did have to reserve beds about 8.15-30 to get a umbrella - but if you aren't bothered by that, there was always beds. Some on the beach available too all day. We went by taxi - fixed price 350pesos to Tulum ruins - lovely morning out. We also went on a Segway tour of the complex - booked with Carlos in the towel exchange. That was interesting and fun. The Lion King show in the Hicenda was a bit hit and miss. The shows in the theatre were generally good - apart from Michael Jackson - awful. The dancers were all excellent and so was the circus team. We walked around the next door hotel Coba - part of the same complex and I was so glad not to be there - millions of screaming kids. We bought a ring in the jewelry shop $50 - which after comparing the prices in the shops in Playa del Carmen, it was a good price, so don't feel ripped off going there. A few niggles and they are niggles. The free wifi was rubbish - so I paid $69 for 2 devices for superfast wifi or $79 for 4 devices for a week. Sometimes the room was cleaned quite late. Unexpectedly a turn down service appeared and then disappeared. The butler service was super fast - but the butler who quizzed us in the main lobby looking for good and bad points, seemed very distracted constantly looking over my shoulder as if someone better may appear.

Fantastic Stay! Amazingly good time!

Where to begin? The staff, that's where! Loved it, from the moment we arrived at the Front Desk and met Paula. She was super friendly, and seeing such a smiling face after a long trip was wonderful. Very helpful and accommodating! Isaac, our Butler, who always asked us how everything was, and rectified our only complaint within 2 hours. Super service, Sir! The Spa experience we enjoyed was very relaxing and the staff was courteous and professional. Our dining experience was made especially warm and welcoming by Yony!! This good man, was always attentive, smiling and friendly. We always sought out his section for our breakfast and lunch Buffet, and will do so again in November if we can get there. Riviera Maya's will be the first drink on our list, haha! The service you provide is top notch, Sir! The food served at the Buffet was great, and the dining experiences we had at the A la Carte's were awesome. Special shout out to Dolce Vita!! Super romantic atmosphere and service, thank you! The staff at all the bars were quick and professional, and even when busy, the line was moving well. Always gracious in their service, these bartenders got it right. Now...the best for last...The Entertainment Team!! Eric, Jonas, Nancy, Ana, and the others...what a great job you do, day after day, night after night! The whole operation from early in the day with the kids programs, up to the evening entertainment for families and adults, was top quality. Considering the time you put in during your day, to see you smiling and friendly at the end of the evening, is a total credit to your professionalism, and your dedication to this fine Resort. The shows that were brought on were excellent, and your team presented them superbly. We loved meeting you, and can't wait to see you again! Thanks to all the staff at the Resort for making our first stay here a very memorable one, and we would recommend this destination to any and all. Cheers!

Nice resort, but not luxury

There were 7 of us traveling to this resort during April sping break – 4 adults and 3 children – 15, 9 and 5. We’ve been to many all inclusive resorts in Riviera Maya area and Caribbean, and comparing to others, I think that this is a good resort, but certainly not luxury, as stated in the name. A regular 4 star resort.Good things:Reception desk was very helpful and efficient comparing to some other resorts. It is a very beautiful and well kept resort, people work extremely hard to keep it clean. I like that the beach is very safe for swimming, especially for kids. There is an area with very shallow water, where kids can safely snorkel and see a lot of fish. They can see the fish even without snorkeling, and it’s a lot of fun for smaller kids and very-very safe. There are also nice areas for grown-up swimming, the turquoise water is so beautiful.Beds are very comfortable. Not so good:It seams that the resort is severely understuffed, especially in restoraunts and bars. The food is just okay. Especially for meat eaters. Not impressed at all.The pool area is very crowded, maybe because it was a spring break.Rooms are pretty small for a 'luxury' hotel. The trip from the airport is pretty long, even without any stops to drop off other people, it’s more than an hour.We had a nice time at the resort, but not ‘wow’… I don’t think we are coming back – we’ve seen better places.

Good stuff/bad stuff

Just got home yesterday from our first visit to this hotel. Overall not bad, with a few tweaks I could give this resort a 5.Good stuff - 1)Employees are over the top in making your stay great. They work so hard and most speak English well enough to get your message through. 2)Resort is clean. Rooms are older but well maintained. Rooms are cleaned daily and the minibar was also well stocked daily. The rooms are also pretty quiet and no bed bugs! 3)Food is pretty good and the drinks had more than enough alcohol in them.4)Nightlife was pretty good. Always a show or singing,etc.5)Lots of wildlife. I think we counted 62 Iguanas!6)The adult areas had nice beach areas with loads of fish to see.7)Room service was excellent. We ordered late meals, pillows, drinks, toilet paper! You name it, it was quick.Room for improvement:1) More communication at the airport. We used Air Transat and it took some effort to find our bus to the resort. One couple completely missed the bus and had to get another ride to the hotel. (1.5 hours drive!)2)More Chairs around the pool areas. Although there are signs not to, people still play the towel game. 3)Poor A/C in buffet and inside show areas.4)Pool bars closed too early. I think it was 5 or 6. Everyone had to go through the lobby to the inside bar to get a drink and go back out. Pain in the but when you are are soaked and/or comfy in your lounge chair.5)Food at the buffet wasn't always marked well. Not sure what some food was.6)The resort(s) are so large you need a golf cart to get around. So unless you like a lot of walking, you will always be waiting on carts. We were in the 7900 building which was close to the small Chit Pool.7) Free wifi. You get what you pay for. It was pretty slow and you had to sign up daily. They had premium wifi for $70 but no one I asked could verify if there was a faster connection or just more connections available. You get 2 connections per room.8)There is a free dolphin show at the Tulum resort. The dolphins looked like they were well taken care of, but seeing them in a small pool, 100 yards from the ocean was pretty hard to take. We felt pretty sad for them. Would like to see this Eco Friendly Hotel shut this down ASAP!9) The Akumal beach area's were small, but pretty. The Tulum beaches were much larger. If you're a pool person you won't care. A lot of the beaches were closed off by rock formations. Hopefully this helps anyone thinking of staying here.

First Visit to a Bahia Property

My wife and I just returned from a week long vacation to to Bahia Principe Akumal. My rating would actually be 4.5 stars, if given that option. Be advised that it is a good hour and fifteen minute drive to the resort from the Cancun airport by private shuttle. We did not find this a problem, as the time passed quickly. We had reserved a room in the Adults Only section, Building 83. The 82/83 buildings are only a year old and I had emailed a week before our arrival to request a king sized bed on one of the upper floors, which they accommodated. The room was very spacious and had everything we needed. The tv was a little small, but we weren't there to watch tv. The housekeeping staff was very fast and efficient. We returned each day to a spotless room. Our building was located by the infinity pool and restaurant, which was very convenient. The pool area, and the beach in front of it, were beautiful. We don't swim in the ocean, so we found their beach perfect for what we needed. The grounds were vast, but kept immaculate. The Akumal lobby was a very short shuttle ride away, or 10 minute walk if you preferred. The shuttle service was an efficient way for being able to move from resort to resort, within the Bahia complex. We rarely waited more than a couple of minutes at any time.Food was good at the buffets, as well as the ala carte restaurants. We never had a problem finding anything to eat. There was also a 24 hour snack bar close by.Top shelf liquor was available for the asking. A special thanks to our Infinity bar tender, Ernestino, and to Jazmin who always delivered our drinks with a smile. Don't forget to tip. These people work hard and try their best to take care of your every need. All in all, we had a very relaxing vacation and both of us agreed that we would happily return for another visit.
