Our Opinion

A top selling resort that is popular for weddings and honeymoons. Also family oriented with a great kids program. Like most Bahia Principe Resorts, you generally get excellent service. Transat holidays has a representative on site which is convenient. Beach is a bit rocky so make sure you bring your water sandals. Highly recommended. Also check out the sister resorts next door, Grand Bahia Principe Coba and Grand Bahia Principe Tulum.

Needs updated.

Just spent 3 nights at this hotel with my husband and two other couples. The grounds, pools and beach were beautiful. Grounds were immaculately kept. There were constantly people out raking and cleaning up the beach and gardens. Pools were clean and well maintained. My biggest problem with this hotel was that there was no air conditioning in most buildings. The lobby is open air, which I understand, but the buffet and seafood restaurant did not have any air conditioning and the windows were closed the entire time. We spent meal time sweating balls! I mean literally the sweat was pouring off of us and our clothing was soaked after 20 minutes in there. We asked our waiter to turn the over head fans on and were told that they were broken. We went to a restaurant in the sister resort-Tulum on our last day and couldn't believe that there was working air conditioning and working fans! The room was old and needs updating. We were in room 6312. The toilet was overflowing into the hallway and out the door when we checked in. Called maintenance before we left for dinner, and when we got back several hours later, it was flooded out the door again. They had not responded to our initial request. Found housekeeping and she got someone up there in about 20 minutes to replace the valve. Air conditioning in the room did not work, even at the highest setting, and due to the high humidity everything in the room felt damp and gross. After spending the day in the sun and dining in the heat, it would have been nice to at least sleep in cool air. There was a ceiling fan, but it only had one setting and did not provide much relief. Bedspreads were dirty and had visible stains on them upon check in and were obviously very old.The did not have any of the reservations we placed from home or in the resort. Our first day we tried to make reservations with the staff in the lobby, and there was nothing left until 9 or 10 pm. Complained to a manger and he got us in two restaurants for 6pm. When we arrived to those locations at the designated time, the staff claimed to not have our reservations both times. After some hassle, they finally sat our party. The restaurant was half empty the entire time we were there, but they claimed to be full. On the second night there was a family in line in front of us having the same problem. The restaurant had about 5 tables full and was still refusing to seat this family. My husband also made a reservation for me at the spa before we departed for our trip. Surprise! When i showed up to the spa they did not have my booking. They did however take me for my massage. Very unorganized and the lack of English speaking staff made the whole process even more confusing. Drinks and buffet were good. Most of the staff was pleasant and accommodating. Next time I'll spend a little more and go to a newer resort.

25th Wedding Anniversary

Visited the Luxury Bahia Principe on 26th April for 2 weeks, from the UK and travelled with Thomson. FANTASTIC.I’m not a fussy reviewer who will moan about the smallest problem, I try to give an honest review to help other TA users. I won’t bore you with the details about a 2 hour delay with my flight as I’m reviewing the Bahia Principe, not my airline. I also won’t bore you with the delay with the transfer from the airport to the hotel (please people, if you have transfers with your tour operator and decide to take a taxi, please tell the rep at the airport. Else you will have 20 couples sitting on a bus for 1½ hours waiting for you!).Arrival and check in was smooth and quick, we had welcome drinks whilst our cases were sorted out by the bell boys. We decided to make our own way to block 57 as it wasn’t too far from reception. Fantastic room with a 4 poster bed overlooking gardens. Our friends that we were travelling with were 2 doors away with a similar room. Yes, the room smelled a little musty but the humidity is a factor but the air-con and ceiling fan were a welcome blessing.FOOD – there’s lots of it. Buffet has plenty of choice for all ages, if you can’t find something that you can eat, you’re a fussy eater. Booking the a la carte restaurants was not a problem, on the first day we were able to book 7 different restaurants for the 4 of us. Yes, the times were early, but we were happy with that (if the food in the a la carte is not to your liking, you can always go to the buffet). Towards the end, we did book a couple more and this was no problem. Our favourites were Alux, Arlequin, Mikado (if you can get a show table its great) and Fruit del Mar fish restaurant. STAFF – there are loads of them. From gardeners, train drivers, waiting staff and bar staff. Reading other reviews here (even when we were out there) seemed to indicate a lack of staff, not something I saw. Just because a staff member isn’t there to serve you at a particular time, doesn’t mean there’s a lack of staff. If the pool waiter/waitress doesn’t bring you a drink (as they’re out collecting glasses left behind) it’s not too difficult to get up and get a drink from the bar yourself (there’s one within 2 minutes of wherever you’re sitting…..even on the beach!).TRIPS – we went to Chichen Itza with the tour operator (which included a swim in a cenote and loads of Tequila). Xel-Ha is well worth a visit if you snorkel, swim or even want a day out, we booked this online and got a taxi from the main gates (taxi was only $10 each way). Loved the day out there even though it took me outside my comfort zone (I don’t like deep water). There are plenty of floatation vests and even I felt safe. Got to swim above a stingray, which was amazing. We also got a taxi to Akumal beach to snorkel with turtles. There are excursions, but it was only $10 each way in a taxi again. At the beach, the “guides” will try to sell you a guided trip, but we only paid $5 each for a floatation vest (….that deep water again) and got to swim near the turtles (do not touch them, they are a protected species). Our trip was for our 25th wedding anniversary and we had let the hotel know. They arranged a bottle of champagne and chocolates in our room on the day, which was nice. All in all, a fantastic stay at the Bahia Principe. Would I go again???? YES, without a doubt! In fact, I look forward to returning to celebrate my 50th Birthday.THANK YOU BAHIA PRINCIPE AKUMAL

Lovely relaxing trip so far.

We are on day 10 of 14 and having a lazy day so thought I would write a review!Every day has been very relaxing so far, our room is large with a four poster bed (block 58 top corner room) staff are very friendly. Food - The food is good. I'm a big breakfast fan and haven't got bored yet! We've breakfasted at the infinity pool restaurant, our lobby and also Sian Kaans which had a nice but different atmosphere, live music etc. Buffet lunches and snack bars are fine, pastas, chips, pizza, salads, Mexican tacos and dips / guacamole etc lots of choice but I'm often too hot to have too much.Dinner - we've only had two buffet dinners as we were lucky enough to book an al a carte for all the other nights. Frutos del mar was very good, it's gourmet. Our favourite so far is Arlequin which is French, the food was fantastic and we have booked it again tomorrow! The Brazilian ones are fun if you like your meat, there are two over the 4 hotels so careful not to book both if you aren't fussed with the same food twice! Nikkei Mashua was our least favourite only because it was very hot and service was slow, we were there for over two hours with large gaps between courses which isn't so good in the heat. Last night we had Mikado Teppanyaki, where they cook infront of you. The food was very lovely though because they cook infront of you it was uncomfortably hot, I got through two glasses of ice and I'm always fine in the heat! The lady next to us fainted with the heat. Chef was great and we enjoyed the food and show. Don pablo was nice inside but food wasn't as good as expected seeing as it's named after the owner. We are yet to try Le Gourmet, Alux and Tequila.Beach - reserve your loungers early, we get good loungers on the beach before 10am but holiday makers here seem to prefer the pools! They have towels laid on them at 5/6am! We prefer the beach as the water is beautiful and there are lots of fish. If you take some bread from breakfast and break it in they'll surround you and it makes a great photo! Sunrise is beautiful, at 6am on the beach.Staff are very good - we tip £2-6 at each dinner, our cleaner a few times and a few drivers of the trains. A little goes a long way so we like to show our appreciation.Negatives:The only negative that really put me off was Day 2, we were excited to settle in to our holiday but were approached by the "Premier" staff in the lobby, we entered a free raffel of which he has said we'll win a bottle of tequila either way and just had to come to the lobby at 8am. We are early birds so we did, we were asked to follow a lady and got in one of the hotel prams, it was only when we asked where exactly we were going we were told we are going to Coba (the sister hotel) to hear about the premier club and their offers and sit a 90min presentation! I was disappointed but it was too late to make a fuss so I went with it. We didn't leave until 11:45am. So nearly 4 hours later. We had questionnaires for marketing, lots of Q's about our previousholidays and budgets etc then taken to a conference room with loads of other couples. To cut a long story short we were sold RCI for several hours, of course we were open to considering it and did the maths, they had targets to reach so we got the price down a lot from the initial price given. It personally wouldn't have benefitted us so after hours of being talked at in a very salesy environment we asked to leave. We understood the concept but felt it was incredibly cheeky that we had no idea it would take up half our day of our first full day in Mexico of which we were just exited to explore and as a young couple in their twenties RCI / timeshare just isn't something for us. We did get our tequila though! Though it probably won't fit in our case ! Drinks - drinks are good, nice range of cocktails. They are eco friendly here so don't use straws so it could be a good idea to bring a re-usable one or we have seen loads of people with thermos flasks to keep their drinks cool with a built in straw. The alcohol strength is hit and miss and some drinks taste non alcoholic or very weak but they are still nice regardless.I'll write another review when we have finished our stay!

Disappointing experience

Just returned from the Akumal resort. I will begin on a positive note. My son was married here on the 15th May the wedding was a lovely affair and all involved were very professional and we all had a lovely day.The tale was very different on our arrival on the 6th May. We checked in at reception and were taken to our room number 8024 the gentleman who assisted with our luggage immediately informed us on entering ur room our air conditioning was not working and to report it immediately to reception. My husband endeavoured to telephone reception to find out the telephone was not working. He immediately walked back to reception to report the faults. He was reassured this would be sorted asap as there was a problem in the block and to ring if there was any further problems. He then reminded the reception staff our phone was out of order. The reply was this would not be repaired until the Monday 8th (2 days time). After that day with still no A/C we returned to reception to request a different room and to speak with a manager to be told there was no empty rooms at the hotel, After talking to at least 3 reception staff getting no where we returned to our room as we were extremely tired following our flight from the UK.That night it was impossible to sleep in our room even with the patio doors open. My husband return early the next morning to reception to be told the A/C would be fixed immediately. On returning to the room there was a maintenance man in the roof space attempting to fix the problem he informed us that the system needed to be topped up with water, he left ensuring us that it was now ok. Many hours later and another two attempts to move rooms as A/C was still not working we were informed by 3 members of staff that block 80 and 81 were continually having difficulty with the A/C and the systems were to old. We were continually told there were no managers to deal with our problem. Our butler also was informed and was no help.Following the second night with little sleep we return at 7am to reception and refused to move until something was sorted. By this time i was so tired and flustrated i was planning on returning home and missing my sons wedding. The reception staff then spoke to a supervisor who inform us we could be moved to another room within the block which we refused and insisted on a different block. We were reassured that this would happen later in the day. We then spoke to our Thompson rep (only then were we aware of her presence at the hotel) who was horrified at our treatment she ensured the hotel gave us another room. This room was not allocated to us until 4pm on the Monday. Thompson ensured they would would speak with customer services and we would be compensated for our experience. We were met by a customer service representative who was useless, offer us a free bottle of wine as compensation. This offer was improved on to a free massage, when we refused numerous other offers. We were requested to sign to state that we would not pursue our claim with a solicitor or post anything on Trip advisor on our return. We declined to sign and will be reporting our experiences in full. Minutes after returning our keys to room 8024 we were informed by a reliable source that the reception were allocating his room to another unfortunate couple. To conclude there were issue throughout the resort with A/C in numerous restuarants either not working at all or partially in use. Beware of the Japanese show restaurants if you want to eat in an oven be my guest! The Arlequin at The Akumal was a pleasure and food was great. This hotel is in a lovely location and the majority of the staff are lovely people. The management of this hotel need to wake up and spend a some of their profits on renewing their older rooms services. We will not be recommending this hotel to anyone..LikeShow More ReactionsComment

Disappointing

First room given was horrendous, moved after two days into 83118 which was much better, although had to ring Reception everyday either for right amount of towels, cups, etc, as there where three adults sharing but was only given two of everything. The resort is huge but is easily accessible by golf buggies, and the gardens and surrounding areas are very clean and well maintained. The infinity pool was nice although not enough parasols so had to get up early or go without for the day. Their were many other pools to use but again not enough parasols. The beach was lovely and very clean. The hotel had many weddings throughout our stay which meant parties of American and Canadians who drank throughout the day, using fowl language both in and by the pools and also on the beach, maybe the hotel should of monitored this, as there were families with children near by. The food was plentiful and varied but was always lukewarm, and quite a few people had upset stomachs. During our second week the pool with the swim up bar was very slimy and murky, not sure it was cleaned enough with the amount of people using the pool that week.
