Our Opinion

A top selling resort that is popular for weddings and honeymoons. Also family oriented with a great kids program. Like most Bahia Principe Resorts, you generally get excellent service. Transat holidays has a representative on site which is convenient. Beach is a bit rocky so make sure you bring your water sandals. Highly recommended. Also check out the sister resorts next door, Grand Bahia Principe Coba and Grand Bahia Principe Tulum.

Disappointing sweat box with poor service!

-broken air conditioning in our room so slept in unbearable heat. Apparently there's major issues in block 81 (our room was 8122). When we complained we were told we could change rooms 6days into our hol. - air con and fans nor working in dining rooms or theatre (for 2wks with no assurance they were being fixed). We were told the ceiling fans weren't wired up (see picture of them switched off during unbearable heat). Meal time and evening entertainment were at best uncomfortable. -shortage of sun beds & parasols (you won't get a bed or parasol unless u are prepared to reserve one with your towel at 6am)-poor & very slow service (wait on average 20mins for drinks at meal times with no facility to serve yourself). Waiters treat you like you were a nuisance if you wanted your glass refilling. Often had to sit down to tables that were full of the previous guests leftovers and wait for the table to be made. Guests were pushing in and fighting at the bar in an evening due to having to wait so long (only one bar member serving)-grand lobby looked like a building site the whole time we were there (see pic)-everyone who we spoke to who are part of the premier club said standards have recently dropped dramatically & they believe the hotel is trying to cut costs -I left a dress in my room, as soon as I checked out I remembered and requested at reception that it be returned to my friend. Despite having friends staying 2 days after we left who were able to collect the dress it never materialised & my friends were just fobbed off by reception & told to keep coming back or that there was no record of the request. - al a cartel restaurants were full waiting list of 3days before you could book into them- food was very average I would not recommend this hotel, you don't get what you pay for, I've stayed in much better 3star hotels.

Didn't meet expectations

This is our second time staying in a Grand Bahia hotel, the first time was in the Dominican at Cayo Levantado. If you want luxury see my review of there. The complex is huge granted but wasn't an issue as the train service they have connecting everywhere was brilliant! We stayed in block 83 which was the adults only block. Other than being close to the pool and beach there is no real benefit of staying there. As everyone else in the hotel are able to use the beach and pool area. If you weren't up early you had no chance of getting a sun lounger. The room itself was nice and clean, plus the A/C worked brilliantly. However we are the sort of people who like to relax and aren't heavy drinkers. On multiple occasions we got woken by groups of people screaming and singing as they went past at 3am. The input we got was we have lots of wedding parties at the moment. I get that but people should have a little respect and the hotel do nothing about it. We used the butler service multiple times in the Dominican. Here though we didn't once have the butler come and introduce themselves or check-in with us. The food at the hotel is nice, we didn't have issues booking the al carts as I used the app. Something I knew from previous experience is book on the app as soon as you arrive. We like earlier meals so could manage them no problem.I would say this hotel is average but not luxury. We asked to be transferred half way through over to the Sian Kaan. That was a massive effort to make happen but it was worth it. Will write a separate review on their page but was far better and quieter.

Fantastic

Came here for a family holiday and after hearing so much about it from friends and family who had been here the year before, it fully lived up to expectations. Rooms: Large rooms, with quality beds, all the fixtures were nice and the bathroom was large, nothing really to complain about. Well, apart from one thing, which is the bizzare issue of sound proofing, or lack thereof. It seems like it's an issue with how the extractor fans are set up, as if you have your bathroom door open and the people in the room next to you have theirs open then you can hear absolutely everything that's going on nextdoor. Other than that, brilliant rooms.Food: Oh my god, where to start. There's the main buffet itself which has an amazing choice, and I found myself going back for more than one plate as there was so much to choose from. Then there's the smaller buffet round by the adults only pool, which while it doesn't have as much choice still has quality food. But as you're staying at the Akumal, you can use the buffets at all the other hotels in the resort, regularly we'd head upto the Sian Ka'an to get the buffet up there in the afternoon. Then there's all the different restaurants you can try which are all included. There's a lot to choose from and all were nice, but the best for me were the Maiko Japanese restaurant, the Rodizio Brazilian and the Tequila Mexican. Drink: Again, as you're at the Akumal you get all the quality brand name drinks, even when you goto the Tulum or Coba. Never had a problem getting served and trying the selection of cocktails was great, even I did end up just getting a Miami Vice everytime as it was so good.Entertainment: Plenty of entertainment, both at each individual hotel and down at the main entertainment area which would have a band on and then a disco which was on till the early hours. There's also plenty of stuff going on each day, from fitness down at the beach, to the dolphin area, to games at the activity pool. You're not going to get bored. As you're staying at the Akuaml you'll also get free Wifi throughout the entire resort.Pool: So many choices of pools, from the main one which is probably the biggest, to the activity pool to the adults only area with the infinity pool. There was also a little mini pool area near to our room which was virtually empty most days but had a bar there. So any day you felt like chilling out with nobody to bother you but have virtually your own personal barman then that's where we'd head.Overall: Fantastic resort, with so much to do and choose from. We were there two weeks and there's plenty we didn't get round to trying or seeing. The only downside to most of the holiday was the little golf cart/bus things that take you around the resort. For some reason, if you were staying at the Coba you were sorted as every one seemed to head there. But getting back to the Akumal at times meant waiting for ages till one turned up that was heading that way. Great two weeks away though and I'll definitely be going back, in fact I almost booked up again while lying by the pool.

Update on previous review

So, the final day of our holiday....Week 2 solidified the weaknesses of a huge resort - Coba, akumel, Tulam and sian ka'an are all interconnected. The economies of size show in the service levels. Food in main buffets leaves something to be desired in terms of variety and heat. But they do the very best that they can, the Bain Marie's need to be checked as to the water level to avoid lukewarm food. More staff in the restaurants at peak times to ensure clean table availability.Rooms - ac worked excellently in block 2b, cleaned every day . No issues with room service.Mainly to Coba lobby for food and entertainment- what do you expect on holiday? Premium acts to concert level? Have reasonable expectations..,.,,Beach bar service at akumel beach (where we went daily) - excellent! Freddy, Ivan, car Melinda and deviluz - fantastic. Breakfast in premier lobby - excellent - staff exceptional. British. So still not got the hang of tipping- but did not feel that we had any loss of service please tip - staff work so hard! All in all- a pleasant stay, but too big a hotel FOR Us. We would have preferred a smaller complex, we are a n older couple who want a complete chill - expectations must be factored against where you are going. It's not the ritz, but then again, you're not paying their prices!

A wonderful resort and a great family vacation

We stayed in VIlla 67 on the 3rd floor. It was a bit noisy because it was overlooking the adult pool, but it all resolved after about 6-7PM and was quiet at night. The beach was nice if you like it to be relaxing. There are barriers to prevent waves from coming in so I was a little disappointed, but it was great for families and snorkeling. There were plenty of fish to see also. The beach was kept clean and enjoyable. The buffet was awesome. We enjoyed all of the different options especially the Mexican section and the fresh fruit. There was an option for omelettes at breakfast which was replaced by a grill for lunch and dinner. The a la carte restaurants were enjoyable also. We didn't enjoy the Arlequin too much because it took forever to be served and they seemed understaffed. The Frutos De Mar restaurant was pretty good also. We really enjoyed Dolce Vita with Florenciano. At MAshua the food was excellent and Zacarias was an excellent server. Los Corrales was awesome too for grilled meat lovers. It was a bit of a hassle making reservations at the restaurants online with the horrible WIFI. Although free wifi was enjoyable in the rooms. The butler service was great. The maid service was awesome. We enjoyed the pillow menu and scent service also. The room service was also used and they were great too.I would highly recommend this resort to all.
