Our Opinion

A good resort located away from the main Riviera Maya strip. Great food options and the staff is incredibly helpful and attentive. A great set up for kids, as there is a play room and a kid's club available for families. The beach is situated in an OK location. Definitely opt for a more central resort if the quality of the beach is something that you're looking for.

Great stay

This is our third trip here in 5 years. We love the elevated walkways and paths throughout the property. We felt like we were nestled deep in the Mexican jungles at times. Be prepared to do a lot of walking. There is a shuttle service to take you around if walking is not your thing. The whole resort is well maintained and the housekeeping staff is supreme. Tried some of the activities offered by the Joy Club, great bunch of kids! We don’t dine out much, bought groceries in nearby Morelos and prepared our own meals. We will definitely be back.

Would give it a 5 BUT....

My daughter and granddaughter joined me on this trip to Vidanta Mayan Palace. It is a lovely resort with great food and waitstaff. I've been to timeshares before with no problems. I knew to expect them to want to give me an ownership update. What I did not expect was the complete disregard for my well being and emotions. After checkin the concierge tried to schedule me for my "update". I told her several times no thank you. She then called someone else over who said they wouldn't try to upsell and I told her several times again no thank you. Then she tried to make me feel bad by saying it would help the Concierge because she was new. My daughter stepped in and told them no as well. We walked away without scheduling. Next morning Vanessa called offering all kinds of discounts so I agreed to give them one hour (my mistake). We met for breakfast and then into the sales office for the "update" which was the typical upsell. I had a new sales rep and an experienced one at my table. I let them tell me about new things coming to the resort and then the pressure started. I told them over and again as nicely as possible no thank you. Then another person stopped by with his pressure tactics. Again, no thank you over and over. I didn't want to disclose my personal reasons for having no interest in any changes or upgrades to the ownership my husband and I have because it's none of their business. Unfortunately I felt it was the only way to get them to listen. I felt forced to share that he's battling with cancer and I burst into tears. The new sales rep was sympathetic, the other just pushed in with her pitch while I sat there in tears. No one even offered me a tissue and I felt such humiliation. She just kept on pressuring and I kept on crying and saying no. Finally I just shoved her papers away and said we're done here. I told her I would never refer my friends to this resort through their ambassador program for this very reason. I told her I would never renew my ownership. I had told them no thank you probably at least 30 times. And she just looked at me with disbelief. This young woman was the most appalling, heartless individual I have ever met at any timeshare resort. I know that I should have just got up and walked out but I was raised to not be rude and sometimes it's a curse. It's even a struggle to write this review when so much is nice about this resort and the staff. Had that young woman shown any sympathy, had she even acknowledged that she pushed me over the edge and was sorry I wouldn't be writing this but when you have no empathy for others I feel compelled to speak out.

Beautiful resort with jungle atmosphere

We traded a Marriott week for the Mayan Palace in February. The resort and pool are gorgeous. Yes, they try to get you to go to a presentation, but since I NEVER go to any, including Marriotts, I just firmly and nicely said no thanks, I want to enjoy my vacation and I don't want anything free. No problem after that. The staff is amazingly nice. The restaurants, especially Azur and the new Quinto steak house, are 5 star truly, with great service. In each restaurant, including Havana moon as well, the manager came to speak with us to ensure we were satisfied. The prices are a bargain if you are used to paying for 4 or 5 star services. The golf is excellent, especially if you like a quick round of a challenging 18 hole par 3. We loved walking through the resort. The bakery food at the Jade shop is wonderful. We reserved a bed on the beach one day and enjoyed great food and drink service while looking out at the water. The beach is rocky, but you can walk it. The pool area gets crowded, so you need to get chairs with some shade early, or wait till 4 pm when people start to go back to their rooms. The hotel is perfectly maintained, but if you want something fancier you can look at the Grand Luxxe and Grand Mayan. However the Mayan Palace has marble floors and very comfortable beds. One thing to know, if you have a trip out of the resort, you need to get to the front gate, sometimes early in the morning. You simply ask for a ride to the front from the bellboy staff. I was happy to give the staff member a 50 peso tip for taking us to the front for our trip to Tulum. However there are a couple of tour operators also working out of the resort if you want to book after you arrive. If you are going off resort after 8 am, the carts take you to the motor lobby or even easier, you can go to the golf resort stop and walk 5 minutes to the front. For those who cannot easily walk, it is still possible as there are handicap accomodations, but this is a large resort for those who can't walk around. For kids, they have a kids club and some fun pool games every afternoon. For a peak experience, go to Joya, the cirque du soleil, for a show and dinner that are first class.

Worse vacation decision we ever made

One of the worse decisions we ever made for a vacation. It started the day we arrived and never got better. We got there later in the evening and had to rush to find an open restaurant. The check in was slow. When we got to our room we had a very strong musty odor which affected our sinuses. the next day we talked to the front desk and asked to be moved. Instead they place what they called a machine in our room which ended up being a dehumidifier. Within 6 hours it was full and had to be emptied. In fact this process was repeated 3 times daily for the rest of our stay. It never really got rid of the smell and they didn't want to move us.On the second full day there we had the sales pitch. That same morning we had no hot water. Had to take cool showers. When we met with the reps of the resort which ended up being three of them we told every one of them about the lack of hot water and each of them told us they would take care of it. Needless to say it did not happen. They instead told us well if you sign on we would put you in a nicer place. So if you are a guest and not a member they treat you like a second class citizen. They never did anything about the hot water. By the time we got to the third sales person we had gone from $58,000 + down to $10,000 to buy in. The third person started to get rude and even started to infer that we were stupid for not taking the deal when we are paying a maintenance fee on a time share we already owned. They claimed they had no maintenance fee however every time you made a reservation to go there you have to pay $1,100. Now they claimed you got that back but it was in what I will compare to Kohl's dollars. You had to spend it in the resort and you could only spend it on certain items like clothing and such. You could not use it to pay for example dinner or food. I finally ended it by telling the guy we will spend our money how we like and the answer in NO! The guy was actually pissed off at us for not buying in.At dinner my wife asked to switch out the mash potatoes for tostones. Well she wasn't allowed to do that even though they had tostones on the menu. By the third day my wife started to get sick from the room and we also found mold in the cracked tile in the shower area. We also go to experience a power outage in our building.Getting around the place was a royal pain in the neck. We were placed in one of the farther out lying buildings you need to take a tram to get to anything or else walk a long way to get anywhere. There were no vending machines in the buildings so if you wanted to get just a bottle of water you had to take a tram out and back which was a 30-40 minute ordeal as that was the only way you were going to get anything. The place itself was not all that busy yet you had to wait excessive amounts of time to eat dinner. Restaurants with a 30-40 minute wait with empty tables because they were understaffed. When I made a tee time at the golf course I was told to tell the concierge that I needed my golf clubs taken to the course and it would be taken care of. When I asked the concierge I was told I had to take the clubs myself to the course. If you got to the pool after 9am you had a hard time to find even a chair to sit in. You could reserve a cabana however you could only do it the day before and you had better get there early (by 7am) or you were out of luck. They had a rule posted that if you didn't show up by 11am to claim your reserved cabana you lost it and another person could have it. They last day we were there I noticed a cabana was empty and it was after 11am so I went over and asked about getting it and I was told I couldn't have it. The people who reserved it didn't arrive until after noon. So much for the rules. We were ready to leave by Wednesday, our third day there but could not get a flight out until Saturday. We were supposed to leave Sunday. The airline we used was booked solid Thursday and Friday. We asked for a coffee maker for our room since it had none and was told if they had one available we could get one. The room we were in had no coffee maker or even a microwave. We did get the coffee maker so I guess they had a spare one. How does a outfit not even have enough coffee maker to provide one in each room? Their beach was big but not friendly. The water was beautiful but with all the rocks and stuff it made it difficult to get into the water. When I checked out the night before we left I was asked to fill out a questionnaire about our stay there. Of course my ratings were not exactly on the high side so we got a call from the front desk asking why we were leaving early and why our rating was so low. I could not believe they had the gall to ask and then they offered to move us to another room and the damage was done. My wife ended up being sick from Wednesday on and we had to take her to the doctor when we got home.Overall a terrible experience and we could not make a recommendation to anyone to stay there. I spoke to several people who happened to be members at another of their resorts on the West coast of Mexico and a couple of them told me members have been complaining about this site. They also sneak a charge on your bill of $300 pesos for what I was told was a contribution to the less unfortunate people in Mexico. Of course they don't tell you about this charge so if you don't check your bill you automatically pay it.

Update 2018

Everything I said last year still applies . . . Great staff, service, rooms and food. Same problems, too. Too many people, not much of a beach, and the endless sales pitch from Vidanta. The way to avoid the crowds at dinner is to make reservations in advance at the concierge desk. My favorite breakfast place remains Cafe del Lago. Now the new stuff. These people never stop expanding! They are building a whole new shopping area, pseudo-Mexican village style. Looks nice and should be ready for the fall. There was also talk of a water park buy fall! They are working to improve the beach by putting large wave breaks about 200 yards off shore. Makes wading easier, especially for kids and seems to be adding sand to help cover the rocks. But the best new thing is the Quinta restaurant. This is without doubt one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten in. Not cheap, but really exceptional. The service and atmosphere are flawless. My waiter was probably the best I’ve ever had, and includes both in New York, LA, Chicago, Paris and London! His recommendations were all right on, my first meal was a steak of Wagyu (Kobe style) beef. Perfectly cooked! Outstanding. The second time I had duck breast ina wonderful chili-based sauce. But the hit of that meal was the passion fruit tart.Don’t miss this restaurant if you go to the resort!
