Our Opinion

The Occidental at Xcaret Destination is a great location for families and couples who want to explore the Riviera Maya. It is located right next to the Xcaret water park where you can snorkel amongst thousands of fish, swim with dolphins and much more. The biggest downside to this resort is that the beach, while nice, is man-made and fairly small. Clean facilities and friendly staff.

Overview

The Occidental at Xcaret Destination is a magnificent resort designed as almost a town unto itself! Its international character is reflected in the culinary variety on more than 20 restaurants & bars to choose from, 5 swimming pools, numerous shops and a lively disco. The extensive facilities and activities also include a Turkish spa, archery court, ecological and cultural hike, and bike tours.

The Occidental at Xcaret Destination offers each guest a greatly discounted day pass to the breathtaking natural wonder of the eco-archeological Xcaret Park. Located adjacent to the resort and within walking distance, travelers with a taste for eco-touring and adventure can explore the remains of a Mayan village, snorkel through ancient caves and underwater gardens, swim with dolphins, or observe jaguars, butterflies, tropical birds and other indigenous species in their natural habitat. Discounted tickets for Xcaret Park may be purchased at the resort's front desk.

Location: On a man-made beach, next to Xcaret Eco-Park, 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen, 50 minutes from the airport.

Highlights
  • Located with an ecological and historical preserve, with easy access to Xcaret eco-park
  • Lush hotel grounds, home to native animals
  • Friendly service
  • Nice, large pools with loungers
  • Lots of restaurant options

Amazing Family Winter Getaway!

We just returned to Minnesota from the Occidental Xcaret.... and WOW!! Loved it. I am like so many others and I read the comments from others and let me say, we had NO problems! The main thing I saw people complain about was the smell, food and how people bother you to do timeshare presentations. Well, the smell... this is Mexico people. Most of the time wherever you go, it is fine, but you do walk through pocket areas of sewer smell. It is not all over, but random. But again, this is the humid jungle, and it's Mexico. So I didn't find it to be excessive. The food, loved it! Is it 5 star quality, no.... but we found a great variety and honestly, loved the main buffet best. We booked at the Sonoma Grill Steakhouse, and our group was large, so it took over an hour to get in. The food was very good. We mostly got the ribeye steak, which was tasty. The only other ala cartes we went to was Pachos Tacos and Hacienda Mexican resteraunt. The Tortilla soup at Hacienda was the only thing we really liked. but Pachos Tacos was fun and the kids loved it. The best was the quesadilla. The service was outstanding everywhere we went. You are treated like gold, but remember to tip.... even a dollar goes a long way to tell these hard working folks you appreciate them! Lastly, timeshare people. We stayed in building 12 which is honestly to cheapest rooms. We loved it. The beds were comfortable, the AC will freeze you out, and cleaned nicely everyday. But remember to put out the towel replacement card if you want them changed. We didn't realize that until late. We had one phone call the first morning after our arrival to stop down and talk to David. He was respectful, not pushy and told us our options and activities for the week. That was it! No one else bothered us the entire time. However, our friends staying in building 19 in the nicer rooms, their main entrance had a guy who bugged them randomly, until they told him firmly they were no interested. So just be firm if you have that situation. Otherwise, we would absolutely come back here!! LOVED every minute and the Monkeys are crazy cool. They come up and take food out of your hand!! Lastly, the beach was gorgeous, and the staff did everything they could to keep up with the seaweed. But the winds were strong bringing it onshore, but I was able to find a nice spot to enjoy the ocean waves and it wasn't smelly where I sat. Thanks for a perfect week!! I guess the only request would have been for queen size beds instead of doubles!

Good trip but wouldn’t return

Overall we had an amazing vacation and glad we went. Our children (ages 19,17,17,10) absolutely loved being here and two of my kids took full advantage of the unlimited xcaret however my husband and I would most likely not choose this resort again even with the good deal we got thru Costco travel. Mainly because of the food in the buffet and just a lower overall quality compared to other mexican resorts. Food- we’ve stayed at many resorts and the food at the buffet was the worst. However you won’t go hungry there was a lot of selection and we could find things to eat (fresh fruit, salad, salmon, coffee ect). Steak house wasn’t good and only the steak and dessert was good. Chinese was hit and miss some things were delicious and others were horrible. We liked that we didn’t have to make reservations and it was fairly quick to get in. We would have rated the resort much lower had we not tried the Seafood specialty restaurant. The seafood restaurant was amazing, we really enjoyed it. So much so that my boys all had seconds. Beach- it was unfortunate with what happened with the lagoon, from the look of their progress I wouldn’t be surprised if it never gets fixed. They were using wheel barrows and pumps and the sand seemed to come in faster then they could move it. The noise from the pumps didn’t make sitting in that area very relaxing so we didn’t stay. We are not huge beach goers so this didn’t impact our tripRoom- we rented two rooms and felt they were great, building 22 rooms 22319 & 22318. Our room was a corner room with an additional side window and our kids room next door had amazing high ceilings. The monkeys, birds and coatis would come right to our balcony and they loved the bananas. There were a few house keeping issues (stained sheets, dirty mirror) that got corrected quickly and items needing repair (door locks and shower head) which didn’t bother us and over all it was still good..... if you’re staying here I’d still suggest those rooms.Honeymoon- We had gotten married the day before arriving and had called the resort in advanced of our special occasion. I absolutely loved the surprise when we got there. There was a banner on the door, balloons, a congrats card a bottle of sparkling wine. We loved it. Kids club- I dropped our 10 year old there one day. They have a pool attached to the club and there were some electronics for them to play. He didn’t mind his time there and seemed to find someone his age to hang around. Being that he’s older I wasn’t too concerned with the lack of care however for a younger child I would not leave them there. When we were headed back to pick up our son the kids were just getting out of the pool. We saw this little girl (she looked maybe 2 however the allowable age is 4) wandering out of the kids club half undressed and her underwear around her ankles (there’s no barrier to prevent the kids from leaving, just a swing gate that any young child can push) As she saw us she ran back in. My husband and I stood at the front for a bit without being notice and could have easily left with our son without the staff member noticing. The kids had just gotten out of the pool and were changing creating a lot of work for one adult to manage. We were signing out my son when that little girl left the centre again. The child care worker didn’t notice and it was my husband and I that said something. The childcare worker had to leave the kids in the centre relatively alone to run after the little girl as she was steps away from the adult pool. Had that been my child I would have freaked. Shows- they were well done and highly recommend them. Our family enjoyed the resorts entertainment even more then xacrets.Xcaret unlimited package- we bought the unlimited xcaret. I liked that we could come and go freely when ever we wanted. When we arrived the ticket centre it was closed and so we got the tickets the next day. First thing in the morning is super busy and was a long wait. Couple of tips, take a picture of the bar codes just in case they get lost. Make sure you have the whole group with you to pick up the wristbands. They don’t like giving them without putting them on. Tip: We discovered if you check the prices of the dolphin swim with the reps at the resort or just before you enter the park you get a better price then in the park. We paid for one adult and a child is free. When we went to the counter inside the park to ask about those promotions they were not offering any discounts and wanting full price.Diving center- two of my kids (17,10) tried diving, the staff were extremely patient and made my youngest first experience memorable. Definitely recommend them. The test dive was only two minutes however if you’re interested in diving it’s $129 and includes the theory, pool and diving in the ocean.

Just OK.

Property was gorgeous but the food and service fell well short. I don't recommend. I've had better value elsewhere in the Cancun/ Playa Del Carmen area. Bar staff was not friendly, even though we were tipping, which I found odd. They also kept 'running out' of call brand liquor, which was never replaced. Food was basic. Not good. The dinner restaurants were not good at all, and were not worth dressing up and waiting in line for.

Another amazing time 💜

Second time at this resort and STILL not disappointed! Great views, tons of wildlife. AMAZING people! Otilio at the buffet, Luis and Alfredo at lobby bar, Miguel at swim up, and Alma make the trip! The staff are so friendly and always willing to help. They worked day and night (literally) to try to fix up the lagoon (neighbouring hotel dumped a bunch of sand for their beach and it ended up stopping the water flow from ocean) but they allowed people to be on the ocean beach which some people liked better. Lots of walking, which we loved to walk off all the food and booze! They do have little carts going around picking up people if you do get tired of walking.Great alcohol selection and restaurants for everyone. Rooms were clean and fridge was stocked. Can’t say enough great things about this place. Quick taxi ride to Playa del Carmen, and central to some good day trips. If you get the chance, GO!

Very clean

Rooms- Some of the reviews I was reading before I left, I thought I should upgrade to the Royal level but I am glad I did not. All of our rooms were extremely clean and no problems. I would suggest a pool view and not be looking at the river that runs through the resort. Breakfast- We went every morning to the restaurant by the ocean and very much enjoyed it. Lunch- We ate at the swim up bar restaurant and they have the most AMAZING chicken wings and the food was always hot. Supper- We ate alot at the buffet as it had something for everyone in our group. We did eat at the Italian 1 night and yes they are very strict on the dress code for men. Long pants and closed shoes but woman can wear open toe and don't need to make any reservations for any of the restaurants. Food was alright. The resort is very big and lots of walking, which is good because you always over eat on holidays. There is lots of choices to lay by 1 of the pools. We found the cleanest pool was the one that was partly used by members.Pools were cold but you got used to them fairly quick when it is hot out. We did not have to go down early hours in the morning to reserve chairs either which was a nice treat. The lagoon that they have by the beach is so beautiful but too bad no one could use it as it smells bad. Very limited space by the beach to sit down there.Shows on the stage were ok but we really enjoyed the music in the lobby. 1 night they had a rock band with a female singing cover songs, amazing! Watch out for the time share people sitting in each of the buildings.I personally would not go back because I like to see the beach from where ever I am on the resort and to enjoy a large beach to sit on. I would recommend this hotel as it is clean and very friendly.
