Our Opinion

A medium sized all inclusive resort in a good beach front location close to Playa del Carmen. At the Ocean Maya you will find great service, excellent food and lush grounds covered in tropical flowers and foliage. The beach is nice white sand but there is a barricade to protect from beach erosion, this may be removed in the future. One of the best 4 star values in Riviera Maya.

Highly recommended

We are just finishing our second week at OMR and are very impressed with the hotel and it's staff. The grounds are beautifully kept and there are always workers maintaining them. It is great to see the wildlife wandering about. The reception is spotless as is the pool area, the beach is small with workers struggling to keep on top of the seaweed but we were aware of this before we came. Never any problem getting sunbeds somewhere and we normally spent the morning at the quiet pool then moved to the shade on the boardwalk. Our room was quite acceptable and our cleaner did a great job every day. Our air-conditioning worked well and we never had a problem with either water pressure or temperature in the shower although you do need a towel outside the shower door as they do leak at the bottom. Our bed was comfortable and we had no problem sleeping the pillows however do leave a lot to be desired. We ate at the Blue Moon, Dolce Vita and Yokosa and enjoyed them all, the Hacienda buffet is probably the best we been to at an all inclusive, there is a wide choice of food, it is of good quality and cooked well. Drinks at both the lobby and pool bar are quickly served and good quality spirits even without being privilege. The outstanding thing about OMR is the helpful, friendly, smiling staff and here I must mention Tila, Yovanetti and Tiger at the lobby bar they are a credit to the hotel. If the hotel reads this I have a couple of suggestions; Please get better pillows,Put moveable sunshades round the pool instead of static ones. This aside we had a great, relaxing couple of weeks.

Great resort... fantastic staff

Lovely week at Ocean Maya. Rooms are ok, nothing exciting, clean. Resort is beautiful and grounds immaculate. Staff are very efficient and friendly. Breakfast buffet was excellent, lots of choice. Really enjoyed the Italian restaurant, although not huge portions, food was excellent. Nightly entertainment a little cheesy. Lovely little market set up one day a week selling local arts and crafts. Pool can be a little noisy, so we spent most of our time at the beach. Some seaweed, but nothing troublesome. The staff really do work very hard here, they are a credit to Ocean Maya

Polite and friendly

Accommodation: rooms were spacious and clean. The shower is poorly designed resulting in lots of seepage onto the floor where the toilet is located and hot water was not always available in the morning. The A/C was the best! It kept the room at a very comfortable sleeping temperature and the noise from the Air conditioner provides an effective 'white noise' for sounds emanating from other rooms or people passing by. The pillows were very lumpy and dense but our friends requested a change of pillows and this request was met promptly. Rooms are slightly musty . . .as a result of the high humidity.Food: The buffet was one of the best all inclusive buffets I've tried. Fresh salad ingredients (make your own), fabulous roast prime rib, flat iron steaks, chicken kabobs, lamb, with a selection of Mexican dishes, cold meats and cheeses daily. Salad dressings were not inspired but a squeeze of lime juice took care of that. Speciality restaurants: Biggest disappointment? The Japanese teppan style restaurant.Air con was broken, sushi was so so, fried rice was tasteless and the teppan meats overcooked. Best overall: Blue Moon - offered a nice selection of entrees and appetizers all of which were well presented. Some of the dishes suffered slightly from being served at a less than optimum temperature. Special coffee was a nice presentation. Good - Italian - best location -lovely open air on the beach though views were hampered by the canvas curtains required to keep the wind down. Lasagna was excellent as was the steak. Unfortunately food again not necessarily served at the optimum temperatures. Mexican: we ate here for lunch on two occasions - it is a Mexican style buffet with other casual food options like hamburgers and fries. There is a nice smoothie bar right beside the restaurant that also offers beer etc. Liquor: As with all Mexican all inclusive the liquor is of poor quality and watered down.I am not certain what is in the simple syrup but the mixed drinks like daiquiris, margaritas etc tasted of saccharine. . .and did not use fresh juices (lime margarita had very little lime flavour). They have a red wine and a white wine but neither was that agreeable. The best is the beer on tap (you will get two cans of beer/day in your room). If you like your wine you can purchase some from the restaurants but beware the markup is in the 300 to 400 percent range for a very moderately priced wine. Entertainment: Here is where this resort really shone. We loved the cover bands: Elvis, the Beatles, the Jersey Boys, Santana, the Three Tenors etc. All great to dance to and the outdoor venue was wonderful. There was some dance and cirque du soleil type entertainment as well as magicians but it was the music that really brought it together.Money exchange: for some reason the hotel offered a very poor exchange rate on US dollars and the disparity in charges between pesos and US dollars meant that you would be much better off bringing pesos than dollars. Activities: Beach volleyball, ping pong, tennis, kayaks and hobie cats are all available. However when one of our party inquired about the hobie cats they were told they had to be arranged in advance and that they were fully booked. We sat on the beach for another 3 hours; although there were hobie cats available all day no one came. Tennis - we are avid tennis players and made arrangements over the internet with an Argentinean tennis pro who uses the courts at Ocean Maya to teach locals. He is not promoted by the hotel so the 3 courts sat empty quite a lot of the time. It might be beneficial for the Ocean Maya to have a pro who can organize matches or lessons for a nominal fee for their guests.Beach: the beachfront at the Ocean Maya is not the best - tons of seaweed removed throughout the day and the sandy shore is not expansive. Better beaches are found elsewhere. If booking note that the rooms are all in two storey buildings and to get a proper view of the ocean you'd need to be on the second floor. We spent virtually no time in our room so found the rooms without a view to be more than adequate - note too that the waterfront rooms will be noisy as everyone congregates at the pool and beaches during the day. Premium 10 - we did not attend the presentation for upgrading your stay - (better liquor, separate beach area etc.)

My greatest treasure for relaxation

Well one more time my two weeks are in and out, but like always the people of this hotel know how to make my two weeks fantastic as always they do.This year they upgrade us to "Privilege" and that was very nice, and in reality the difference from a regular room to the Privilege is not to much, but it is always a nice change to be pampered sometime. The hotel as always is keep extremely clean and perfectly manicure grounds and the staff is so nice and very hard working people day in and day out, and after all the people that they serve every day it is amazing to see how they remember us and our names. it is like a reunion with old friends. The food as always is great the Italian restaurant is one of our favorites, but we enjoy each of the other restaurants, BUT this year we have a little disappointment at the Japanese restaurant when we find out the the restaurant part was no longer in service and was just the Hot chopping tables and that unfortunately is our least liked, but is okey with other people. We would like to see the full Japanese restaurant one more .next year.We like to make a very especial reference to the boys at the bar in the pool, for their super hard work and for always being so happy and helpful with every request, and to the staff that work at the bar in the lobby and the super very special girls Tina, Jojo and Anna that run every night to serve you the greatest drinks ever with the greatest smiles ever. All the staff of this hotel is extremely friendly and they deserve the greatest recognition. To all the staff of the Ocean Maya Royale all my love and respect for your wonderful work and God Bless you All. This year we have a new addition to the local wildlife and was the visit of two spider monkeys that spend one afternoon in the hotel grounds and this was a very nice adding bonus to this year wandefull vacations.

Calm and Easy

Two words sum up this resort calm and easy…… We had been to this resort in 2010 when it was a family resort, now that it is an all adult resort, they have spruced up some things and made some very nice additions. Check-in was a breeze and the front desk at all times were very efficient and helpful. We arrived before check-in, we changed were given our bracelets and towel cards, and went to the beach. We returned at 3:00 and our room was ready, the bellman drove us there in the tram and carried our luggage to the room… When checking in I told the front desk clerk we had been there in 2010 and were returning guests. We got a lovely room with a partial ocean view, a bottle of wine and white chocolate strawberries, which was a nice touch.Food, we thought the buffet was very good for breakfast and ate dinner there a few nights and also thought it was very good. The Blue Moon Restaurant is a “joke” extremely SLOW service and very, very small portions….. my suggestion is to skip that restaurant…..We did not eat at the Mexican ala carte restaurant, we did eat at the hibachi grill in the Japanese restaurant, which was OK, I had a MSG coma after eating there…you need reservations at this restaurant, which I made at Guest Services in the lobby.…Our favorite was the Italian Restaurant which we went to twice, really enjoyed our meals, service and the setting is beautiful, right on the beach……Mike’s Coffee Cafe which opens at 4:00 PM was a great, they had a variety of coffees and desserts. We ate our lunch at the grill/buffet area by the adult pool……it was good and my other half loved the burgers. The beach, we knew what to expect so we were not disappointed in the beach, and honestly, it only had seaweed the last two days of our week. But, I will say if you are looking for crystal clear water and a beach with no seaweed, DO NOT book this resort, or any resort in the general area…..Lounge chairs are very easy to come by anytime on the beach, but were reserved very early in the morning around the pool….. thank god we are beach people. We had great drink service on the beach by Augustin, he was always there when we needed another cocktail……Service was great, everywhere we went, all staff acknowledged us with a hello or a nod. Our maid did an awesome job, and our room was always cleaned with fresh towels, when we returned from the beach. Some reviewers complained about the bed and pillows, we thought they were fine. We liked the entertainment, especially the “fire show”…..If you are young and looking for a crazy all out party resort, I would not book this resort, it was mostly couples, I thought over 30……We would definitely return to this resort…..we paid a reasonable amount and had a great relaxing time.
