Our Opinion

A medium sized all inclusive resort in a good beach front location close to Playa del Carmen. At the Ocean Maya you will find great service, excellent food and lush grounds covered in tropical flowers and foliage. The beach is nice white sand but there is a barricade to protect from beach erosion, this may be removed in the future. One of the best 4 star values in Riviera Maya.

Go Some Place Else, We Do Not Recommend

My wife and I went for our five year anniversary. I wouldn't go back. We expected a lot based on the reviews and to say the resort fell flat is an understatement. When we arrived we were greeted and introduced to the Concierge who would take care of us. After getting us our hotel room keys, we were asked if we'd have about an hour the next morning to discuss the hotel's customer loyalty and points program as they were opening new locations. We agreed. What we got was a three hour sales presentation and the option to buy into their hotel chain starting at $10k. You can finance the option over five years at 8% interest, so it's a good deal. Then the hard sell, when we told them we weren't interested we got "You're going to spend the money ok vacations, why aren't you buying our program? Oh so you like to spend more for less? What do we have to do to get you to sign today?" It was terrible and three sales agents doing the same to multiple customers. The food was lacking to say the least. The buffet was more often than not cold. Not a single authentic Mexican food option in the resort. We tried the hibachi and the chef over cooked everything. We tried the Italian one evening with two other couples and we all ended up back at the buffet. The food portion was incredibly small and wasn't hot. We finally got so tired of the resort we left the last night and bought dinner off the resort because we wanted a hot fresh meal. On a side note, El Fogon in Playa is amazing and has awesome food. We started with incredible homemade guacamole. The tacos el pastor and the beef fajitas were amazing. You could tell it had all been made fresh. The last night there, we wanted to go out on the town with the other couples. We asked the front desk about a taxi for six and were told it wasn't an option. They could only get four in a taxi at a cost of $44/taxi each way. We were looking at $176 to get six people eight miles each way. As we discussed it, a taxi pulled up and dropped off five people. We looked and the taxi would hold six people. We asked the driver to take us to town and no problem, $35 each way. As we rode to town, he explained the hotel had an arrangement with a local taxi service to not allow more than four at a higher rate. The taxi driver gave us his number and when we were ready head back to the resort we called him for the return trip. We had bugs in our room that were all over once we lifted the coffee tray and found them. The sliding window on the ground level didn't have a lock as the window was broken. The sliding door was off the track more than it was on making it hard to walk in and out of our patio and keep the cold air inside. If you're thinking about heading to Playa, please please pick another resort. Multiple couples we talked to and spent time with had little good to say about Ocean Maya Royale.

AMAZING HONEYMOON!!! 😁😁😁

Wow what to write about this hotel... myself and my husband came to Mexico on our honeymoon and my husband was in charge of sorting it out and he couldn't of find a better hotel. On our arrival the staff was very welcoming and kind. Our room was well presented, clean, tidy and very spacious. The only negative is the shower leak and when having a shower you needed an extra towel on the floor to clear it up. All the staff was very nice and always greeted us. Any problem they would sort it out straight away. The pool area and day and evening entertainment was brilliant. Bar staff were very caring and helpful. We really enjoyed joining in all the entertainment, our favourite was the foam party and the magic man. Aranza and Erick were the heart and soul of the entertainment crew. They both were very happy and fun to be around, they both made a great effort to get the know everyone and make everyone have a brilliant time in thier present. I always noticed when they were not around. The only criticism I would say is we stayed for two weeks and it would be nice if the entertainment was different each week as we got a little bit bored on the second week. It's lovely to be at a adult only hotel and have great fun. The staff spend a lot of time caring for the hotel and making sure everything is clean, tidy and cared for. The food was amazing!!! Five brilliant restaurants!!! Our favourite was blue moon and the Italian. Such amazing service and fine dinning food!! I would highly recommend this hotel and will definitely come back in the near future!! Elliot and Charlotte Taylor 😀😃😄😁

AMAZING!

I had a wonderful time at the Ocean Maya Royale while visiting with friends! The activities were great and fun. Food was magnificent! really fresh and tasty. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Beverages were amazing!! All restaurants are really high-scale. Their Italian restaurant was superb, with a great selection of wine and brandy. We will definitely visit again.

Ocean Maya Royale Surprise

We went to OMR to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary and had a great time. The staff is one of the friendliness that we have encountered at an all inclusive and we have been to alot of them. We really felt like this was a resort that offered ALOT of value for the price. We know that 5 star in the Riviera Maya is not 5 star in New York City so our expectations are always with that in mind. OMR would score quite well in our book compared to many other resorts in the area. Food was very good in the Ala Carte restaurants and that is where we eat most of our meals. The privilege restaurant is a great benefit if you prefer to sit in a quaint area with an ocean view for ala carte meals. We really like the size of the resort as it is much smaller than many in the area. Consequently the walk to the lobby is not far which was nice. The grounds are well maintained with alot of interesting little seating areas and photo ops. The shows in the evening were very entertaining and the atmosphere in the courtyard really added to the ambiance. Rooms were clean and the A/C worked perfectly. Bars were good and I definitely think the privilege upgrade is worth it. What we did not think was stellar was the frozen drinks that came from the machines. We felt those were not that sweet and somewhat blah. So, we did everything on the rocks or had them blend the drink fresh and they were tasty. Even though we are very impressed with OMR and would return, there are a couple things that I give a knock to. The first is the boardwalk. We knew this was there so it wasnt a surprise. I completely understand why it is there as the beach erosion would be bad if it wasnt. I wish they had a staircase in the middle of it to access the water because the sand underwater in that area is still nice. The beach area near the party pool is fine and there are not any huge rocks in the water there. (you will run across a small rock here and there but that is not unusual) For many, and that includes us, the boardwalk is a bit of a downer but it isnt the end of the world. There are plenty or palapas in the area and this is the first resort that I didnt see a significant issue with getting one. The privilege area is nice with the padded loungers but the beach access on that end is not good at all. They have had ALOT of erosion there and it looks like they are doing what they can to keep it from going further by using sandbags. There is a small area near the dock that looks like you could walk into the water. Also, the way this area is set up with the jetty, it collects ALOT of seaweed. (There was some seaweed present at the other end by the party pool but it was nothing like 2015 and was cleaned up daily by the staff) NO ONE was ever in the water in this area which is a bummer given that the Privilege area is there. The pools at OMR seem to be the place most people hang around. We have a pool at home so that is not our deal. I have read that you could never get a chair around the pool but we always some chairs open in the morning when we went to eat. If your wanting a chair under an umbrella in the party pool area it might be a bigger task. All in all, we really liked OMR and will def consider returning. What you get compared to the cost is very high. I compare it to one of our favorite All Inclusive's in Jamaica which is close to 3x more expensive and we now think we would go to OMR instead.

Absolutely AMAZING!

My stay at the Ocean Maya Royale was absolutely amazing and I will never forget it. The room was great I do recommend a room on the second floor a bit more privacy. The food was incredible from each restaurant we went to and had so many options to choose from. Most of all the entertainment staff was amazing! Super fun and great to talk to me and my friend got to make some lasting relationships with each one of them. The staff included Alexis, who taught me how to salsa for the first time and was great to talk to while teaching me some Spanish, Brayan very friendly and did a great job instructing water aerobics while we were there and lead the kayak tour as well, Aranza, Pamela and Erik (amazing dance skills) were so great to get to know too and last but not least was Margarita she was so kind and truly made our experience memorable. The activities offered made our stay fantastic as well as the unique foam parties the hotel has at the pool were amazing! Overall A+ and I know me and my friend will be back!
