Our Opinion

A medium sized all inclusive resort in a good beach front location close to Playa del Carmen. At the Ocean Maya you will find great service, excellent food and lush grounds covered in tropical flowers and foliage. The beach is nice white sand but there is a barricade to protect from beach erosion, this may be removed in the future. One of the best 4 star values in Riviera Maya.

Great time

Just finished a 2 week holiday at ocean maya...On arrival we was greeted with a tasty cocktail, and the check in process was quick and pleasant, we was then taken by the bell boy to our room on golf buggy (ocean view 906) and shown around. The view was amazing, and was everything we asked for. The restaurants were great, we ate at them all, the blue moon and Italian was our favorite, but the buffet restaurant served below standard food, it wasn't great, and nothing seemed to match together food wise! But the staff were amazing, and really looked after us, especially Sergio the front of house and Willy the waiter. The pools were clean, and the foam parties were brilliant, and definitely had a fantastic atmosphere-dirty grandpa was a legend! The beach was man made, and the staff worked incredibly hard day in and day out to sort the sea weed issue out, the smell some days was unbearable- but you can't help Mother Nature. The waiters on the beach always made sure we had a drink- Carlos and victor done an amazing job at that! The entertainment of an evening was phenomenal, the acrobatic show definitely got my vote, along with the Caribbean show. The bar staff were fantastic and always made sure we always had a drink (tipping somewhat does get you better service) Naming some of the bar staff- yukkivanni and and tiger. The hotel does certainly need a lick of paint and some care and attention, but the grounds were amazing. The wildlife at ocean maya is brilliant, and all animals are friendly and don't bother you. Would I return to the hotel?? Probably not, as the food in the main buffet and the beach really let it down for me, but is it worth a visit? Why not, they do look after you! Thanks for having us!

Fantastic value for money!

This was an unexpectedly phenomenal vacation. From the food to the hotel to the atmosphere, it was fantastic. Starting right at the airport, the Expedia representative (Carlos) was a delight. Then, at Ocean Maya Royale, all of the employees were wonderful. In particular, Ismael at Yookoso was lovely and funny. The food everywhere was delicious! The whole team at Blue Moon (Carolina, Minerva, and Conrado) were fantastic. Moreover, we were so impressed by the team who cleaned up the beach after the storm. They worked all day in the heavy heat to make everything pristine again. Huge kudos to them. For the hotel experience: The foam party was very fun. The nightly entertainment was extremely impressive. The drinks were very well-made. The rooms were spacious and clean. The beds were very comfortable. I don't have a negative word to say. Thanks, Ocean Maya Royale!

Ladies Trip

The drive from the Cancun airport is about 40 minutes. The airport is a bit hectic, and it took nearly an hour for everyone to get on the shuttle. You could purchase a beer on the bus for 5 American dollars. Check in- Upon arrival, our phones immediately connected to wifi. No password was necessary. We were advised our rooms weren't ready until 3pm- and they stayed true to their word. As a result, we missed most of the foam party as we arrived on a wednesday- it started at 3pm :( Kinda sad that the check in and foam party are done at the exact same time (this is only a problem if you'll miss Sunday- which was the day we were going home). Unfortunately, they were unable to get us in the same building, let alone in the same area. There were 8 of us , and we had booked so far in advance- but they said it was impossible, so we were scattered around the hotel grounds. If you're going with a large group- perhaps try to email or arrange something prior with them... maybe that would help. Room- we had a room on the first floor. I appreciated the first floor because ...stairs and luggage... enough said. The room was very clean, no smell and had a magnificent air conditioner. Fridge was stocked everyday. Everyday I left a tip for both the cleaners and fridge refillers. There was a very sadly powered hair dryer (not like there was a point in drying your hair in that heat haha) and a great safe to lock our passports in. The outside patio had a swinging chair, and a place to sit and have coffee if you wished. The bathroom had a very slow, weak flushing toilet. We plugged that twice within our first 12 hours. Absolutely use the garbage can beside the toilet to deposit your toilet paper or anything you'd flush down the toilet. It will save you some embarrassment and hassle. The lobby bathrooms seemed to be better.Beach- the beach was covered in seaweed. The poor men worked on that day in and day out trying to remove it with wheel barrows. The one side did get better and you could go into the ocean- but because of the state of the beach- it wasn't a place to lounge. There is no bar on the beach- so we mostly stayed by the pool. There is a lagoon- turn left out of the hotel- walk through the very very scary sea weed and continue on for about 15-20 minutes. The lagoon is a cold water ... river? Anyway- it's very deceiving, because it shoots you out to the ocean with it's strong current that you absolutely cannot swim against. It is pretty fun, but only worth the walk once. Just be careful. If you're going when it's going to be a million degrees like we did- bring a bottle of water- it's a hot walk!Pool- the two pools were very very warm. They are relatively shallow, so of course the sun heats it. We also visited in August, so i'm sure the 47C weather everyday didn't help the pool temperature. The only cooling off to be had was to use the pool side shower! The pool wasn't extraordinarily clean- but with the amount of people in there and the heat, what can you expect? To get a lounge chair, I do recommend getting out by 630am. There is pretty much zero shade, so scoring a chair under an umbrella (which cannot be moved), or by the trees by the DJ booth is a must. There are lots of activities and things happening at or around the pool. The foam parties happen Wednesday and Sunday.Dining- overall, the food was fantastic. I didn't have one bad meal. The buffet had limited choices, but they were good choices! The mimosa station in the morning was awesome. The only restaurant with AC is the Blue Moon- fantastic food, nice ambiance, and great service. Regardless of where you choose to eat- you'll be happy. Also room service- took just under an hour at 5pm. We enjoyed pizza, fries and caesar salad. Definitely a great option if you've spent a little too much time in the afternoon at the swim up bar ;) Snacks are out pretty much all day long. You won't go hungry here. I've never eaten so much guacamole and chips in my life!Drinks- I drank Skyy vodka most of the week- just be sure to name your alcohol of choice. We ended up having to pay extra when we ordered the booze from the privilege shelf (mostly the gin and tequila) - I think i paid 20 US dollars for 6 shots of don julio tequila? Anyway- consider how much you want the premium booze- it might be worth it. Going out- we took a cab down to playa del carmen one evening. It was 22 american dollars and maybe 20-30 minutes away (depending on traffic). It's a giant alley full of great shops and restaurants. It was very busy and crowded. We played tennis some mornings. There is a great tennis court. The rackets have a very large handle- so the grip isn't ideal. Book your court time the night before with the front desk :)Like all the reviews say- the wildlife here is pretty amazing. Walking out of my hotel room to see a deer standing right in front of me was pretty crazy. Oh, (and obviously) don't leave your room service plates outside your door- those animals will eat it all night long and wake you up with the plates clanging on the ground..... every single hour. Overall, this place is quaint and caters to a variety of ages. It wasn't quite the "ladies trip" we were looking for, but it didn't disappoint. If you like good food, a sunny place to lounge, enjoy pool games and cocktails- then come here, you'll like it!

Holiday

The moment we arrived we had our luggage taken over to our rooms and we were shuttled across in a golf type buggy, our room had champagne on arrival which was a lovely touch The rooms are clean and the beds comfy with plenty of pillows, we slept really well There are two pools one was an activity pool and one more relaxing Each week there is a foam party which was good fun even for us oldies I made sushi one afternoon which was great The sun loungers were always taken with towels put on so never managed to sit round the pool maybe needed more putting out but loads of beds on the beach so wasn't really a problem for us The restaurants all good we particularly liked the Japanese and Italian the blue moon which was a romantic dining experience was good but very slow service The entertainment good the fire show and the trapeze show, excellent The highlight of the holiday was Holbox a must, paradise and the best trip we have ever done, Hilary the rep was lovely and well organised Staff always smiling and helpful around the hotel We did have some illness and not sure what it was due too with sickness and diarrhoea 24hour thing think we were just unlucky Felt very safe around the complex We did suffer a hurricane whilst we stayed and it lasted one day, our room felt secure as it hit over night and never woke us, after there was a lot of seaweed left on the beach which caused some sulphur smell but the men on the beach worked tirelessly to clean up the site after, some people might find it off putting The worst part of the seaweed came up to the left of the beach the other side to the right didn't seem to be affected and for most part you could swim no problem A short walk to the left was a lagoon which was worth the walk There is limitless cocktails and the bar staff worked really hard to keep up with demand All in all a good stay would go back

  • Olga P :
Enjoyable stay (overall)

Positive: 1) rooms clean and overall in good condition2) all staff, except Reception, very friendly and helpful. Reception, in opposite, cold, indifferent and useless when you need help3) buffet and Mexican restaurant food was good4) if the weather is bad, there's entertainment in the lobby with various table games5) every night different show, all except "carribean night" dancers were great (band was great, only dancers were pathetic, reminded me of those cheap dance shows in Egyptian hotels). Mexican night, magic show and fire show were great6) hotel for adults. No kids in the hotel = can relax and swim in the pool calmly7) beach is cleaned regularly8) hotel territory is very well maintained9) received a piece of cake from Room Service on my birthday - nice touch10) good security control, feeling safe11) not too big hotel territory = fast and easy access to the beach/lobby/restaurantsNegative:1) rooms are not sound proof, you can hear neighbohrs above your room and, if your room is next to the lobby, such as block 5, you hear the music from the shows perfectly well2) water pressure in shower is weak, difficult to clean long hair. I understand they try to save water, but I observed water running non-stop in the sink in the lobby bar as the staff cleaned there hands/tools from time to time, so they don't bother to close the tap. So I wonder why guests have to save water and staff no?3) hairdryer is a joke... why hotels never think of women with long hair? Ladies, I recommend to bring your own hairdryer if you plan to look nice at dinners4) no racks in the room / on the terrace to dry your swimwear. There's 1 towel rack inside the shower cubicle, which is not enough even for 2 bath towels, not talking about swimsuits. It's humid and smelly in the shower room, so it wouldn't dry inside anyway.5) pest control needed. Not too many mosquitos in the room, but other insects - yes, including one small and one really big fat black spider... have seen big cocroach next to the room. There were other insects inside the room too, no idea what you call them..6) higiene at breakfast is concern, as staff don't use gloves. Lady at the hot station, arranged pancakes on the plate with her hands without wearing gloves. And this after touching/breaking eggs with the same hands. Diana at the smoothie station (who is by the way, unfriendly, not smiling and unhelpful) cuts your fruits generously grabing them with her palm AFTER peeling them off. Super unti-hygienic. I made the comment to the Chef, he said "sorry" and ... nothing changed. All the following days staff continued to touch through the peeled fruits with her hands as she cut them.7) kind of negative experience in Japanese restaurant - according to the offered menu, dessert was included, however after finishing main course we waited for a long time, some of the guests started to leave, but dessert was not served. When asked, the waitress was genuinely surprised: "you want dessert????" she asked and looked bothered. After making us wait, the staff finally took the order. The stewarding staff didn't wait until we leave and started to clean the show kitchen pan in front of us with smelly chemicals. A very clear "get out!" message. The table next to us didn't get any dessert, so it's quite normal there, I guess. By the way, dessert was the best part of the dinner, I'm glad we fought for it :)8) shuttle to Playa del Carmen is only available at 10:00-13:00 or 12:00-15:00. The hottest time of the day, plus some of the restaurants/bars are still closed. Why not arrange one shuttle in the evening so that guests enjoy their walk when it's less hot? We would love to have dinner outside one evening, and continue in some bar in Playa del Carmen9) no European power plug adapter available in the hotel, you need to buy it in the lobby shop. First time I see a 5* hotel that doesn't offer such a basic service. Reception said "we have many American guests"... well, there were many Spanish guests too, and they have to charge their phones in the bathroom as the only European plug is at the vanity counter.
