Our Opinion

A medium sized all inclusive resort in a good beach front location close to Playa del Carmen. At the Ocean Maya you will find great service, excellent food and lush grounds covered in tropical flowers and foliage. The beach is nice white sand but there is a barricade to protect from beach erosion, this may be removed in the future. One of the best 4 star values in Riviera Maya.

Smaller All Inclusive but Enjoyable

I've stayed at a handful of AI resorts in Mexico. For the price, this place ended up being a great stay. Because the property is smaller, you aren't having to walk a long distance to get to the beach. We loved our stay as a group of late 30s gals here but I will say the property does cater more to couples...there were plenty of lively folks and groups here as well. The beach front has a board walk and the beach/ocean part is smaller however it was still nice. The property is a less than 20 minute walk to the north to a beautiful lagoon where you can swim and hang out. South of the property you can walk past several resorts to gorgeous vacant beaches to hang out if you prefer. The plus about this resort was that beyond the buffet, there are 4 restaurants on site to choose from and you don't need reservations or to get up at the crack of dawn the day of to put your name in to be able to dine in any of them. That was a surprise as most resorts this is not the case. One thing I found frustrating was that this resort doesn't want you putting any toilet paper down the toilets. To me this is gross especially when the rooms are only given a tiny trash can. It makes the room stink and the public bathrooms stink. I've never stayed in a resort in Mexico where this has happened before so it struck me as odd. The resort has daily activities and around 3 each day they had some sort of activity around the pool to get everyone pumped up. Most of them were cheesy but we really enjoyed the foam party event. I will say the negative to the pool is people lay their towels on chairs and they won't ever sit in them or touch the towels all day....80% of the pool loungers were never occupied but towels were draped across them which was frustrating. The other huge negative to this resort was the massage/spa folks. Every day wherever you went they were trying to sell you some over priced spa packaged which apparently changes in price every day. They constantly harass people at the pool and I was pissed when at breakfast one morning three of them sat outside the buffet and harassed people to come to the spa. Maybe if it wasn't so overpriced and you didn't have folks harassing people to come to the spa people would actually come. This was the most frustrating thing about this resort...the spa people. I even had a guy tell me if I bought tickets for coco bongo he would come back and give me a spa massage discount. Huh? We went into town one night for dinner and it was great. About $22 to downtown playa from the resort. Be warned though that the end by Coco Bongo is a tourist trap where people selliing stuff prey on tourists and harass them. We even had guys coming up to us seeing our arm bands pretending to be from our resort saying they remembered us and we must come to their uncle's store. What a scam. Stay further down the street where it's less market type stuff and more higher end restaurants. The concierge in the resort lobby can assist in where to go and calling you a cab. Overall we really enjoyed the Ocean Maya Royale and I would recommend again....but the harassment by the spa folks needs to be something that the resort really figures out. This was the only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars. They're horrible.

Beautiful Vacation

Our group of 6 stayed the week of January 27th to February 3rd, 2017. The weather was great with temperatures ranging between 26 and 29 degrees Celcius during the day and down to about 20 at nights. I would recommend you bring a light sweater or long sleeve shirts for the evening and early morning. The resort is very clean and the grounds are pristine. We found the resort staff to be very friendly and it was especially nice that there wasn't the usual language barrier like you experience in some other Carribean destinations. The food was outstanding! The buffet food was always hot and had plenty of taste and seasoning. The Mexican restaurant provides a nice lunch and has an outdoor grill where you can get hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken wings, fajitas, etc and plenty other items from the buffet inside. We went to the Japanese, Blue Moon and Mexican a la cartes. Our favourite by far was the Blue Moon. The food was absolutely delicious; especially the salmon, carrot ginger soup, short ribs and prawns! The best part of the a la cartes is that no reservations are required and there is not much of a dress code requirement. Men can go with shorts and sandals if they wish. The resort is spacious yet quaint and you never feel overcrowded with the exception during the evening entertainment outside the main courtyard. Even still, the staff were always bringing more chairs out to anyone who was standing so that everyone could enjoy the entertainment comfortably. Throughout the day, there is always more room than needed for everyone. You do not have to get up at 5AM to "claim" a spot on the beach. There were many mornings that we would head to the beach around 9AM after breakfast and there were still 50+ chairs and huts available. The beach is your usual beach for lounging and sunbathing. If you want to swim in the ocean then you will have to walk to the end of the boardwalk (towards the "Party Pool") and you can get into the water there. Although not the best swimming, it serves it purpose. You can also keep walking down the beach about 5-10 minutes and there are plenty of places to swim off other resorts. If you walk down the beach in the other direction (towards the Italian a la carte) for about 10 minutes you will come across the lagoon. A lot of people go here to swim and it's quite nice. The only negative point, and it really wasn't too big a deal for us, was that the noise from the entertainment at nights was quite loud in the rooms. We had ear plugs so it didn't bother us much and it was usually quiet by 11PM or 11:30PM. Our group was in buildings 5 and 6 so we were pretty close to the courtyard and I'm not sure if you would have heard the noise if your room was further back by the pools. Overall a great trip and we all said that we would definitely return. Between everyone in our group we have been to Dominican Republic, Cuba, Antigua, Cozumel, Grenada etc, and this spot was one of the nicest yet.

Nice place to stay

We stayed here for 1st two weeks in February. Overall we liked the hotel and thought it was good value for money. As others say the grounds are lovely and the layout is spacious. We had an upper floor room near the Mexican restaurant and whilst the location was good and we had a nice view the noise from the extractors in the restaurant was a little annoying. The room was large and kept very clean. On the whole the food was good but we did have a couple of meals that were not up to standard. Hacienda Buffet breakfast and lunch was very good but disappointing in the evening. The Italian and Blue Moon were our favorite al a cartes and we ate at the Mexican one evening which was ok. Japanese not really our thing. Was disappointing and we have seen it done a lot better. It would be a good idea if the al a cartes had a weekly menu change.Bar service was good and never had a problem getting served. All staff were very pleasant and hardworking.Plenty of sunbeds so no early morning towel run necessary and pool/beach areas very pleasant and well kept. The pool with the swim up bar was always busy and got very rowdy in the afternoons.Nice beach walks and not to far into Playa Del Carmen for a look around.

Really nice place to stay

Great place to stay. Nice contrast of jungle and beach! The wildlife on the hotel grounds is humbling to see. Especially the dears. The grounds of the hotel are well tended to with lots of beautiful gardens to walk through. The choice of restaurants to eat at is good, there is an Italian restaurant on the beach, a Japanese teppanyaki restaurant, the buffet hall, the Mexican hut by the pool and also a little quiet restaurant near the main lobby. Note that you have to book the teppanyaki table. The choice of food in the buffet hall is great and of high standards. Especially the breakfast. When ordering at the bar I would recommend tipping the bartenders a dollar as the bar can be really busy with rowdy Americans and it could take a while to get a drink. When you tip the bartenders they recognise you and serve you before anybody else. As it's all inclusive what's a dollar per round? The rooms are just as great, you get a mini bar filled with drinks every day. The room service is quick and helpful for those lazy evenings. This place is perfect if you like to watch the world go round and do next to nothing. You will develop the Caribbean pace of life and walk very slowly!

Seaside Paradise

We would highly recommend this resort based on the price we paid for our 10 day vacation. It was not too big and every inch of the property was finely manicured and offered a variety of wildlife for our viewing pleasure. All of the restaurants were very clean, the staff were very attentive and there was a wide variety of food which was very good, overall. The beach had some seaweed which workers cleaned up day after day (in the heat, raking and hauling the seaweed away). You could walk for miles on sandy beach and a 15 minute walk to the Blue Lagoon was worth the walk, very pretty. Although we didn't attend, they offer a walking tour to the Lagoon. I wish I had of participated. The entertainment staff were great. They had daily activities by the pool and offered a wide variety of day trips and tours. Every morning at 9:30 by the activities center, you could paint pottery, make bracelets or paint t-shirts. Something different every day. Jennifer, Mario, Martha, Alex, Rodrigo, Margarita, Tarabay were great at keeping visitors involved in the activities at the pool and especially Mario, he worked the pool activities and the evening entertainment. This young man was very good at what he does and worked very long hours. Absalon (Absoute as we called him) was a very attentive bartender, by the pool, friendly and he remembered every drink I wanted at different times of the day, morning, afternoon and evening. The "Beach Boys" kept the pool clean and were at their jobs very early in the moring. There was a "party" pool and a more quiet pool, both were sparkling every day. A recommendation to management would be to offer Canadian Club Whiskey within the regular drink selection, as it should not be on the "premium" selection. This would make many more Canadians happy with their bar experience. I also believe that the H10 Hotel staff for upgrades, etc, should perhaps not hound patrons so much. If you want to go to one of these presentations - fine, if not just leave patrons alone. Although Monica was very pleasant, we felt like we had to dodge her. I would also like to say that cleaning staff and even the grounds keepers were friendly and always said olah. A great experience and I would definitely recommend this "adults only" resort. Thank you to H10 Hotels.
