Our Opinion
On the lower end of the RIU hotel scale, the RIU Lupita is still a good hotel as long as you understand what you are getting. This hotel is not on the beach, it is smaller and does not have as many facilities as the other RIU hotels in the area. However, the service, food and rooms are still up to par with the other RIU resorts. The package price on this resort is often very attractive.

Nestled in a lush, tropical forest by a championship 18-hole golf course in the Playacar area, Riu Lupita offers all the excellent Riu food and amenities and an exciting program for activities, entertainment and fun!
Location: In Playa del Carmen, 10 minute drive to the beach, 45 minute drive from the airport, 60 minutes to Cancun.

  • Good food and drink options
  • Quiet location near golf course
  • Large pools, including one adults-only
  • Private beach club with sun loungers and transfers included
  • Renovated rooms with liquor dispensers
  • Features rooms that can accommodate families of 5

WE loved it despite the 10 min bus ride

Well, this summer prices went up to go for a cheap get away but we found this deal and booked it very last minute with zero regrets! The resort is small and inside a garden/golf course area. The entertainment at nights was average but do NOT miss the water show!!! beautiful!!! Nothing to do with people who are looking to meet others or dance or ... Our purpose was to show my friend why I like Playa Del Carmen (Mayan Riviera), it was his first time in Mexico from Ibiza. One day we went to the beach, after breakfast took the bus to Private VIP beach for our hotel. PERFECT beach!!!!!!!!! White soft sun! Palm trees, many chairs and a free, all inclusive bar. Drinks, and lunch included (unlimited). There is also a swimming pool and WC good clean facility. It's at the bottom of Palance Riu hotel. We used bobcat (small catamaran) every day as it was available and free. Next day we took an excursion (booked via spanish website, so it was in spanish and on our small tour bus everyone was European and young(thul). The price was amazing for what we got! No where we could find a better deal! We got picked up at our hotel and went to Coba, Chi Chen and Cenotes. The lunch was: OK :( We got home very late. In time for dinner. Next day we were beach bumps again. The following day we got off the bus in the Playa Del Carmen Center and walked the main strip! That was different and informative. We were looking for a diving tour (no luck due to timing). Tons of restaurants, bars, patios, live entertainment etc.. We got lucky as one guy in spanish was promoting a tour and my Spanish friend made a deal with him. We walked miles across the main strip and then went down to the beach and walked along the beach to our hotel. It was MUCH further then we thought but we were happy we had a chance to see the other hotels located right on the beach. They were more $$ and many areas had rocks, or seaweeds and smelled badly etc... It only confirmed what a great choice we made :) The entire beach is unbelievable... miles... of white sand... and water you can walk in and clean and shallow for a long time. Next day we got picked up early and went through the city itself and Zona Hotelera with all the giant hotels to a port where we took one of many huge catamaran and sailed to Isla Mujeres. It was fun (again for me). The party on the boat was non existent for my friend from Ibiza but drinks were included, weather was amazing and we had each other :) to admire the views all around us. We stopped for snorkle by the museum to see the underwater museum and some fish. We got dropped off on the island and had couple hours to eat and be beach bumps. Got home very late for dinner. Next couple days we enjoyed taking our bus to the VIP beach and took advantage of our amazing trip.

HiCan I please advise please don't listen about the negative reviews I have been to Mexico seven times and stayed in larger resorts but for me Riu Lupita was the best hotel that I have stayed in, It is more personell you don't have to queue for hours at the bar etc...The food is amazing and it is not repetitive please don't listen to the negative reviews about the food being repetitive. The rooms are cleaned to the highest standard I have ever seen. The entertainment staff are amazing especially Robert also known as Roberto he is friendly attentive gets you to join in all the fun they work very long hours and always have a smile on there faces, the shows are brilliant Elvis and Michael Jackson. The Management were at the resort every single day and were approachable spoke tot he guests you don't see that in the larger resorts, Again as everyone says you get the bus to the beach which is always on time and the beach is the best. But thanks again to the colleaues at the hotel we had a great time and will be returning next year. Thanks

Just OK! Good for price.......Not on the beachfront. Not the best RIU by RIU standards.

My complaints (only 3 really): 1: The location was about a 12 minute free shuttle bus ride from the beach with one stop in between to allow people to get off to shop in Playa del Carmen's 5th Ave. stores. (Picks people up on return from shopping) 2: alcohol drinks (Not beer) were ALL lesser quality domestic products. Not one international brand even for purchase! Very untraditional for RIU Hotels.3: Smoking was not allowed in the bar area but was not enforced. (I guess smoker's have more rights than non-smokers sometimes!) my own personal gripe as a non-smoker.The pleasant: 1: Instant hot water in the room at any time. 2: good A/C in our room.3: Pleasant staff in every department(Daniel at reception, Carlos and, and on bar service, the daily maid, Caesar on breakfast, lunch buffet, Cynthia in entertainment just to name a few outstanding ones) 4: The mini-bar was re-stocked every other day religiously5: food quality was good every night. Quite often I made a meal of schnitzle and lasagna at the Italian restaurant from the appetizer buffet bar. The Saltimbuca was also very tasty. In Mexico you had better like Mexican food. It was on the main buffet menu every night and each day was a wonderfully different themed menu. The buffet also served plenty of international choices daily.6: Go into the pools early in the day to feel refreshed, by afternoon they are like bath water (really!) unless it has been a cloudy day or after a day of rain.7:The towel hut also serves as the book exchange/library as well as a small one in the Gym.8: Excursiions. There are a wide selection of choices to pull from. We chose Xcaret and just loved it. There is a lazy river, a Mayan area with some replicas, a bird sanctuary, a butterfly sanctuary, butterfly area totaly interactive, a fantastic live show at night near the revolving tower will charm you. Plus much more. You must bring your children to this attraction. We also booked Ek Balam and the Maya Cenote. Again a great tour with Alltournative tour group and a wonderfull Austrian guide who was fluent in several languages. Thank you Tamara! We saw the Mayan ruins at Ek Balam and were able to walk to the top of the pyramid. (coming down can be challenging....CAUTION....go slowly). At the cenote you could repel down or walk the stairs. Tubes and lifejackets are available to those who feel they need them. There is a rope bridge to challenge your balance and a zipline where you hold your own weight and release yourself int the ice cold, refreshing water before you get to the far end.Our third trip was to Isle Mujeres. this involved sunning, snorkling, bar service, lunch on beach (tasty) with bar service, beach time, return to boat, more bar service, sunning, dancing and a little entertainment. Home by 6:00 pmOur transfers were quick (about 45 minutes) and for the first time ever for us Cancun airport actually moved freely.Great trip. If the beach, smoking and lack of premium brand liquors doesn't bother you, you will have a great time. Just not for me. There are 4 other RIUs in the same area. I would choose one of them on my next trip to this part of Mexico

Not a five star

This hotel was not a five star but good us a three and a half.the reception staff were nice and friendly upon arrival, rooms could do with a bit of an update we were looking over the quiet pool area never heard any noise at any time.thefood was okay plenty of selection, they kept your glasses full a d water.however the cocktails were not very good mainly all ice.entertainment was okay the staff kept kids entertained and shows on for adults .the hotel was in a nice location nice beach where you got the bus about ten minutes ride stopping off at shops first then onto the beach.we enjoyed our break but they need to improve on cocktail making and need to update rooms would we return maybe.
