Our Opinion
On the lower end of the RIU hotel scale, the RIU Lupita is still a good hotel as long as you understand what you are getting. This hotel is not on the beach, it is smaller and does not have as many facilities as the other RIU hotels in the area. However, the service, food and rooms are still up to par with the other RIU resorts. The package price on this resort is often very attractive.

would go back tomorrow if I could! awesome trip!!!

We were in the 2100 building the rooms and grounds were very clean,The beds were hard but we called down and ask for mattress pads and they supplied them no problem . The staff were friendly especially our server Beguida she was always smiling and took care of us. the food was excellent with a lot of choices, handing fruit skewers and ice cream out at the pool was a great added touch. Would definately return.

Great Week at the Riu Lupita!!!!Cant wait to go back

We arrive December 28 stay through January 3 had an amazing time! food was great perfect amount of variety love that they have fish dishes daily entertainment was good some nights better one others the Maya show was fantastic, but overall their chemistry and including the guest was great got to know them on first name basis . All servers at the dining room and at the bar were great, they went the extra mile for my husband's birthday on the 31st and made a real magical table for us went above and beyond thank you May Tay for that. The shuttle to and from the beach was always on time loved the beauty of the beach , we did the steak dinner which was really nice as well . we stayed in room 3130 close enough to everything yet far enough to not hear all the noise. I really loved how It felt far away very secluded place but yet five minute drive down to the beach. We will be back!

Good value resor

This is our first time to Lupita having previously stayed at Tequila and Playacar several times. The reason we chose Lupita over Tequila was the recent renovation which Tequila will not get until this summer. If you are looking for 5 star luxury on the beach book elsewhere. If looking for value for money in a safe comfortable environment look no further. The resort is on par with the beach front rius just minus the direct beach access. The Lupita is clean and well organised, the staff work hard particularly house keeping and restaurant staff.I was very disappointed that I emailed the hotel several weeks prior to arrival to notify them we would be celebrating my daughters birthday. I provided full details of the date and asked for a special meal to celebrate. On arrival we were declined a booking on her birthday to the steak house as it was full. No attention to my request or past loyalty to Riu resorts, they also declined to make an exception to book us in. The Tui rep tried her best to help but no success. Really poor. The food is of a good standard, nice selection to meet all dietary needs. The steak house is particularly good.5th avenue is a 25 minute walk which is ok as long as it's not too hot, the beach club is around a 50 minute walk and probably a bit too far for most to consider. The hotel provides a shuttle but the buses are not frequent enough and can be over filled at peak times with people having to stand in the aisle. Not a relaxing experience. The pools are good the best being the main pool where you have access to the bar, restaurant and snack bar. The main pool is well maintained, clean and not over crowded. We never had a problem find a sunbed which were also of a good standard. There are no facilities at the quiet pool and kids pool needs updating. The rooms are modern and comfortable, but sometimes a little damp. We were on is ground floor and apparently this is a common complaint. The beds are firm but comfortable and a/c works wells. The fridge was always cold and well stocked. Shower in bathroom which always worked well. Overall for what I paid this was a great value holiday. I would probably not return to Lupita as tequila is having a facelift and this will be my next trip if returning to playa del Carmel.

Good hotel - you get what you pay for!

I didn't pay a whole lot for this resort but you honestly get what you pay for. There's a few restaurants, a buffet, one main bar (that's open 24 hours) and nightly entertainment. All of these things I'd give a consistent 3/5. The rooms are also a 3/5 for me. They're clean, but they're nothing out of the ordinary, there's no "you're on vacation!! ah-ha!!!" moment at all. Other than that, the other drawbacks include the fact that you have to take a bus to get to the beach which in itself (including the actual walk) takes you about 20-25 mins from the time you decide to go to the beach to when you actually get there, and the fact that the wifi is spotty at best in your room. I wouldn't stay here again, but that is because of personal preference. I think i'd much rather pay a bit more and stay in a place where I honestly felt like I was on vacation.

Nice place

While this is a very nice, small and friendly hotel/resort, it is definitely not the 5 stars it posts on the sign at the entrance! Two of those stars need to be removed immediately. We were first given a room in bldg. 13 overlooking the central airconditioner! We were told the view was of the golf course and quiet. Not quite. It would have been impossible to enjoy any time on the balcony at all. On the other hand, that little room had been renovated and was quite nice. We asked to move immediately and the Front Desk were very helpful and understanding. We were lucky to move right then and there. Our new room was near the pool bar and Italian restaurant but we are pleased to say that it wasn't noisy at all in the room. Our room had been renovated in recent years and was very comfortable. Our patio looked out into some bushes at we could see the volleyball net but that was okay. Food - lots of good choices and we never went hungry. The chefs were always cheerful with us and helpful. Breakfast was good but the French toast often soggy and cold. Skip it. I really wish they would make churros for breakfast! We've seen this in other resorts in Mexico and in Spain. Delicious fresh churros with a drizzle of chocolate or berry sauce each morning. Yum. Once in awhile churros appeared on the dinner/dessert menu but they were mostly cold and/or slightly undercooked. Speaking of desserts, the Riu Lupita has some lovely desserts! For example, 'loved the little cake mounds (bundt style) that are actually multiple types of cheesecakes. Delicious! The waiters and waitresses were always very courteous, attentive and helpful. They seem to like their jobs at his hotel. We knew about the need to travel to the beach each day and were not deterred by this. It was a simple process although the transport bus was often full to capacity and sometimes people had to wait to catch the next one 1/2 hour later. The beach was beautiful and there were plenty of chairs and snacks and we really enjoyed our time there. Too bad no beach beverage service. We did not use the main pool. It was very loud, crowded and the pool chairs were taken by 7:30 every morning but remained empty for long periods. If you are a guest reading this, please be more courteous and don't do this. We did use the small, adult only pool. Enjoyed sitting there and watching the coatis and listening to the birds; quiet conversations. Lovely spot. Our suggestions to the Riu Lupita: since this is a small, nice hotel in the jungle/golf course there is no need to have the volume of the entertainment up to the highest maximum as if at a big, big resort. Please consider that. Also, because of the potential for this hotel to become a little sanctuary of tranquility , perhaps Riu hotels could consider making this an adult only small property and really focus on that as a theme. This place would be perfect for that! Finally, is it possible to have the bus run in the evening until at least 10 pm so that we can get in and out of Playa del Carmen more easily? That would be a super bonus! We would certainly not hesitate to recommend this hotel for someone looking for a smaller, nice place.
