Our Opinion
On the lower end of the RIU hotel scale, the RIU Lupita is still a good hotel as long as you understand what you are getting. This hotel is not on the beach, it is smaller and does not have as many facilities as the other RIU hotels in the area. However, the service, food and rooms are still up to par with the other RIU resorts. The package price on this resort is often very attractive.

BRILLIANT TIME

We stayed at the Riu Lupita in June and we had a fabulous holiday. You cannot fault the hotel in any way. The staff are fabulous and work so hard and they are always cheerful and friendly. We enjoyed all the restaurants and the buffet. The bus to the beach was not a problem. The beach club was fabulous with lots of sun beds and the availability of food and drink. We have stayed at the Riu Tequilla previously but if I had the choice I would choose Riu Lupita.Looking forward to returning.

Excellent

Stayed in the Riu Lupita for 2 weeks this June this year & I can honestly say we had a fabulous time. Accommodation was exceptionally clean & well mentioned, serviced every day. Bar & restaurant staff extremely helpful & couldn't do enough for you: food was plentiful and always a huge choice, free bus service every 1/2 hour to the beach or drop off in town. Animation team never ever stopped, they had so much energy and drive both dry & night... & the evening shows we're most professional. Apart from the mozzies... had the best holiday everrrrrrr ....highly recommend.

Small resort that packs a nice punch!

I visited the Riu Lupita for a quick three night trip with my girlfriend for her birthday. The staff was very nice and accommodating and decorated our room for her birthday and I barely mentioned it to them!As for the room it was nice, good facilities no problems there. Overall the RL is a very small resort compared to others I have stayed at but it has everything you need. The entertainment at night was good with multiple shows and contests. Both restaurants had great food and the buffet for breakfast and snacks was also good and I typically hate buffets. Only downside of the restaurants is we were unable to get reservations for the steakhouse as we only had a short trip. Since it's so small they can't accommodate many people. The pool/lobby bar was good and the bartenders there were fun! You have to take a bus to the private beach club but it's very nice. They have a bar and place to eat right on the beach and also a pool there as well. Also you can get off the bus at the first stop and walk downtown to the shopping area and enjoy that as well. Overall I would have liked to have stayed longer nice resort thanks for the good service.

Not BAD, but we won't go back

Let me start by saying we travel to Mexico 2-3 times every year. So we have stayed a lot of resorts, and many Rius, in this area. We traveld with a larger group that included ages from 1 to 70. I will start with the good points of the hotel. The staff are very friendly and helpful. They are happy to assist you, and don't make you feel like your an inconvenience. We do like to tip when we travel, but none of the staff act like they expect it. Sometimes they move too fast for you to tip them, and we had to get their attention to come back for a tip. The food is very tasty, but not always marked properly. No one in our group had stomach issues from anything we ate. They always seemed to have some small, cheesecake bites with the desserts, and those were always good. Resorts in Mexico have not always been able to figure out how to make a cheesecake, sometimes with terrible results, but Riu has it down perfect. Many items are made fresh on the grill while you wait, or in small batches that are constantly refilled. Those items are generally some of the best things we ate. There are 3 alacart places. Steak house is the only one that requires a reservation. The Mexican is the only one with AC. We tried them all and the only issue we had was at the Italian, where we had one undercooked chicken dish. The rooms and hotel grounds are kept super clean at all times, as well as the eating areas. Even at the beach club, there is someone constantly sweeping up the sand that people bring in from the beach, and mopping up the water that drips off people. The shuttle bus to the beach club is a large tour bus, and very comfortable. The driver is punctual for his pick up and drop off times. With such a large group we decided that having the shuttle that will drop you off to go to 5th Avenue, on the way to the beach, was a good trade off for the hotel not being directly on the beach. It was great to not have to have everyone pay cab fare to go into town to shop, or take the ferry to Cozumel. The beach is beautiful, and kept very clean, with food and a bar at the beach club. There is a small gift shop on property with all the things you may want to buy. Some of the items are very reasonably-priced, and some things are the inflated prices of resort gift shops everywhere. Like sunscreen, it's the standard $20+ US, for a bottle. However, you could get a really cute swimsuit for less than $50 US. The shop it extremely small and cramped, so I would avoid taking small kids in there, for fear of breaking something. Now for the not as good. The hotel is small, and I do mean small. It's almost claustrophobic. This was good and bad for us. We had young and old alike, and being on a huge resort would have been hard. However, there are only a few areas for EVERYONE in the resort to gather. So unless you go to the beach club, you are packed in small quarters. The roms, while nice, are the smallest Riu rooms we have seen. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of room for 2, but that's about all. The AC while plenty cold, was very loud. Especially when it turned on and off, it sounded like someone dropped a large metal box outside your door. Every 30 min or so...all night long. And when it ran, it was extremely loud. The food. While the food was good, there wasn't a lot of variation. Having stayed at other Rius we missed some of the things that are staples at the other resorts. Also, everything is open air, except the Mexican place that's only open for dinner. They do a pretty good job of keeping the birds under control, but it's a constant job.The beach shuttle starts around 7 or 7:30, but food and drinks at the beach club don't start until 10 or 10:30. Not even cups are out for water or soda until then. So grab a drink from you fridge and some fruit to snack on, if you want to go early. Or be prepared to bribe the beach bartender to let you have a drink. The entertainment is the standard Mexico resort shows, some better than others, but they start too late. The kids show goes on and on, even to the point where the kids seemed tired of it. The resort is too small for the volume of the late shows as well. Our rooms were at the far end, by the tennis court, and it was way too loud. Sometimes, if we were lucky, the noise from the room AC would drown it out, but not always. Last, but very important to us, was the alcohol. They do have Dos Equis beer in regular and amber, and that's the best thing to drink. All the hard alcohol is bottom shelf. Headache and stomach ache inducing, cheap, rough alcohol. I only saw one bottle of Absolute vodka, and I never saw it used, and the bottle looked old. Like it was only for display. The drinks are made with low quality mixes as well. Very sugary and with an odd taste. We knew, with this being a more budget hotel, not to expect top-shelf alcohol, but this was awful. Did he regret our trip? No, no, no! Would we come back to this Riu? Afraid not.

Had a short trip to Riu Lupita ( 4 Nights) . Staff were most pleasant, food always fresh and tasty. Shows at night were great and full of energy. Shuttle to beech and down town every half an hour. One of the best beeches I visited in long time. Just had a great time at reasonable price. Definitely will visit again if time permits. Thanks to all the staff
