Our Opinion
On the lower end of the RIU hotel scale, the RIU Lupita is still a good hotel as long as you understand what you are getting. This hotel is not on the beach, it is smaller and does not have as many facilities as the other RIU hotels in the area. However, the service, food and rooms are still up to par with the other RIU resorts. The package price on this resort is often very attractive.

Nestled in a lush, tropical forest by a championship 18-hole golf course in the Playacar area, Riu Lupita offers all the excellent Riu food and amenities and an exciting program for activities, entertainment and fun!
Location: In Playa del Carmen, 10 minute drive to the beach, 45 minute drive from the airport, 60 minutes to Cancun.

  • Good food and drink options
  • Quiet location near golf course
  • Large pools, including one adults-only
  • Private beach club with sun loungers and transfers included
  • Renovated rooms with liquor dispensers
  • Features rooms that can accommodate families of 5

Riu Lupita

Just got back from a week at the Riu Lupita, one of my best vacations. Check in simple and quick, rooms are impeccably clean, although would be nice if the had a small couch to lounge on while I waited for my wife to get ready lol. The resort is very well maintained, staff are courteous and very professional. Animation staff tries hard but people don't participate, they are great and patient. Beach is away from resort, but shuttle bus provided runs like clockwork, actually liked going to the beach this way. Food was very good, liked that the à la cartes at the hotel were on a walk in basis and no limits on the number of times. The steakhouse was amazing, great steak meal. Koodos to sun wing and Voyages David, well organized trip. As for the Nexus rep Nicholas Sanchez, not much to say because he did not have that much to say. I have seen better reps. Thank you Riu Lupita, you may have finally broken my tradition of not going to a resort twice, I will be back.

Spend extra and book somewhere else...

I've stayed at 8 Riu's and this one disappointed the most.Location: Very removed from everything!!! There are no shops, beach, or anything in walking distance. The hotel does offer a free shuttle to the beach every half an hour or so. It's about a 12 minute ride.Rooms: most reviews are correct here, and the rooms appear nice but are VERY musty and smell bad. There's mildew on the walls, ceiling, paintings, and even the mattress. I've attached pictures of the mildew on the "new" mattress. The air conditioning doesn't work well.Food: Not horrible, just the same things for lunch and dinner every single day. A lot of black beans and meat in sauce. I was not a fan. Snack bar has fruit and hot dogs. Hard ice cream is always available. The drinks aren't that great - cheap Mexican liquor with tasteless soda and fruit juices. THERE IS ONLY 1 BUFFET. 1 BAR. NO SWIM UP BAR!! A la cartes are first come first serve (except the steak house - reservation only). It's not worth the bus ride to get there. Food was bad.The entertainment staff try their best, but really aren't great entertainers. The nightly shows are painful to watch. Therefore I skipped them most nights! After the show at 1030 this place is dead. Would I come back - no. It was an average place for the $900 I spent for 7 days.Attention Sunwing/Nexus!!!! The Nexus Rep (Nicholas Sanchez) was the worst rep I have ever had to deal with. Any question i would ask, he would tell me to check with he lobby. He was not helpful at all. I asked to switch hotels and he wouldn't assist at all. The rep has hours posted that they should be available and I waited 3 separate days and he was a no show. I spoke to the lobby and hey said they would lodge a complaint to have him replaced.

The best vacation ever!

We decided to split our 2 weeks away this year and did a week in the Dominican (been before) and a week at the Riu Lupita, this was the first trip to Mexico for both myself and my husband. We really weren't sure what to expect with the location but know that Riu's have a good reputation and we have always enjoyed our stays in this chain. What an amazing surprise with this hotel! It's in a gated community which has a nice mixture of resorts, villas/condos, large homes and shopping and restaraunts and bars. All very safe to walk around anytime of day or night. The resort itself is smaller but is able to cater to all ages and expectations of a getaway. There is a quiet pool which we didn't really spend any time around but there were people sitting here reading. The main pool has the bar all the entertainment. The activities start in the morning and go all day, there really is something for everyone if you choose to participate. The animation team are very friendly and funny and work very hard. The bar staff are all incredible (special thanks to Artemio (in the mornings), Raul and Blanca at night). The bar gets packed at night but all the staff seem to really enjoy making sure everyone has whatever they need and also add to the entertainment! After just a day they knew our orders and did everything to make sure we were comfortable. The shuttle bus runs every half hour with 2 stops - the first one is to get off and go into town and the second stops at the private beach access. We had a couple of days in town which is very safe, the vendors are enthusiastic for you to come in and see their stores but no different than any other town in the south. We took the ferry over to Cozumel for $15 per person return and had a walk around the streets near the ferry terminal, again very safe and people are very friendly. It was night when we got back to Playa Del Carmen but what a great time of day to experience 5th Avenue and all the nightlife. Such a great atmosphere and very safe. When we were ready to head back we took a cab which dropped us right back at the Riu Lupita for $10 USD.The beach is the nicest I've ever seen and there are plenty of chairs. There is a bar and food here all day. Again, the bartender works hard and can remember your order even when we hadn't been back for a couple of days.We tried 2 of the 3 a la cartes, the Mexican was very "safe" with not a lot of flavor or spice but good quality. The Italian has lots of pasta choices and is fresh. The Steakhouse is on the beach and you are shuttled there at night, the menu looked good we just ran out of time....next time for sure.I cannot say enough positive things about this hotel. The rooms were clean with new sheets and towels every day, we did leave a tip on the bed each morning. There was no musty smell as I had read in some other reviews and the rooms are modern. This is the first resort (after visiting quite a few in the last few years) where both of us agreed that we will definitely be back!!One this I would do differently next time is take Mexican currency. We lost out exchanging our Canadian dollars to US and then depending on where we were the exchange from US dollar to Peso varied from 13-20 peso per dollar so it's easy to over pay....lesson learned for next time!

Small but really good.

Small but clean, service excellent, food varied and tasty, not on the beach but bus always on time. The non-smoking section should be larger and you should have service from the bar when your are watching the show.

  • Bonzodawn :
Its ok

I stayed for 10 days; The staff are friendly enough, the rooms was clean and quiet, fresh towels every days and fridge stocked up daily. The buffet was nice enough. I didn't like the fact that you're allowed to smoke at bar, the non smoking section was far away from bar and out of the wifi. But if you smoke your able to get the wifi and closer to bar ! They need to step up for the non smokers ! as you could smoke everywhere! and its disgusting if your trying to relax with a drink by the pool for some one to be puffing away next to you. The in house entertainment was painful to watch and all the evening entertainment started at 9.45pm which I felt was rather late. When they got outside acts it was slightly better. We went to 5th avenue and was mortified at how many times my husband and I were offered drugs! they are very pushy trying to get you to go in to their stores, but ignoring them is the best way forward!. The drinks are all local spirits and taste terrible, but if you go to wallmart you can get named spirits from as cheap as £5 a litre. The food is ok but if you like it hot make sure our their when they allow you in to eat first, as if you eat later the food is cold. Also the staff like to eat with you, which I found slightly annoying as it was my husband and mine honey moon and wanted to be alone, yet felt obliged to say yes they could sit with us !. Lots of cayotis running around and cats and birds everywhere in the resort. I would go back to mexico just not this hotel, you definitely get what you pay for !.
