Our Opinion
On the lower end of the RIU hotel scale, the RIU Lupita is still a good hotel as long as you understand what you are getting. This hotel is not on the beach, it is smaller and does not have as many facilities as the other RIU hotels in the area. However, the service, food and rooms are still up to par with the other RIU resorts. The package price on this resort is often very attractive.

Swimming pool

Lovely hotel. Came away for a quiet break but dissapointed that the pool that is advertised as adult only has had several families with young children appear it in this afternoon and none of the staff are saying anything to them!

Our second visit to a really nice hotel

Recently returned from a 14 night stay at the Riu Lupita in Playa del Carmen. This was our second visit having stayed here about 4 years ago. We liked it then and like it even more now! The hotel has had a major refurbishment since, and is a very pleasant place to stay.As other reviewers have noted, the staff here are superb. Everybody we dealt with was friendly and professional and did their best to make us feel welcome and valued. Its a comparatively small complex and there is only one bar (apart from in the disco which we didn't use), and some reviewers have moaned about that. But the bar service is absolutely tremendous and the bar area has a friendly and vibrant buzz to it. There is a wide range of drinks available - but, of course, most are local brands. We are experienced travellers who have stayed in numerous hotels, including other All-Inclusives, and have not had better or friendlier service anywhere. If you sit at the bar you will usually be offered another drink even before you have finished the one you've got. There is no table service - and that's fine by us. The food is very good indeed with a wide selection of options - including specials. Considering that the hotel is catering for customers from many different countries (Canada, USA, Mexico, Sweden, Argentina, Germany, UK etc.) it does a very good job. The standard of cleanliness is high and, as in the bar, the waiting staff who bring wine or other drinks, are friendly, attentive and efficient. The entertainment varied - but there were some very good shows over the course of the holiday. Sometimes, there was a singer or band before the main act. One thing that has changed since last time we visited is that the tall French guy who made the presentation of certificates for winning at Bingo, darts, or whatever, last for about 30 minutes has gone. This used to be a very tedious interlude every evening. Now it done very quickly in just Spanish and English and takes about 5 minutes. A big improvement.Quite a few reviewers seem to think that the fact that the hotel is not by the beach is a negative. For us, it's a positive. It means that when you do go to the beach on the free bus, its a complete change of scene. And you can eat and drink there too. Also, you can use the bus to get to town for free - something other out of town hotels don't offer. A further advantage is that because many people do go to the beach complex, there is less crowding around the hotel pools. We like the quiet pool, and could ALWAYS get sun loungers. Indeed, once you're by that pool there is a sense that you could be on a tropical island as there are no tall buildings overlooking it. Nice and peaceful.Just a few points regarding tipping:1. You don't have to. You will be served in the bar or restaurant with a smile whether or not you tip. The staff do not 'angle after' tips or make sure that only those who tip get served.2. Having said that, tips are very much appreciated. We tipped from time to time both in the restaurant and at the bar. Get a supply of 20 peso notes (reception was happy to change bigger denominations) and tip when you want to. I know some Americans tip every time they get a drink, but the rest of the world doesn't, and it isn't necessary. Once or twice an evening seemed average. The Lupita usually comes out a fair bit cheaper than other hotels in the area. In our experience, it is terrific value for money and we are glad we returned to it.

would go back tomorrow if I could! awesome trip!!!

We were in the 2100 building the rooms and grounds were very clean,The beds were hard but we called down and ask for mattress pads and they supplied them no problem . The staff were friendly especially our server Beguida she was always smiling and took care of us. the food was excellent with a lot of choices, handing fruit skewers and ice cream out at the pool was a great added touch. Would definately return.

Great Week at the Riu Lupita!!!!Cant wait to go back

We arrive December 28 stay through January 3 had an amazing time! food was great perfect amount of variety love that they have fish dishes daily entertainment was good some nights better one others the Maya show was fantastic, but overall their chemistry and including the guest was great got to know them on first name basis . All servers at the dining room and at the bar were great, they went the extra mile for my husband's birthday on the 31st and made a real magical table for us went above and beyond thank you May Tay for that. The shuttle to and from the beach was always on time loved the beauty of the beach , we did the steak dinner which was really nice as well . we stayed in room 3130 close enough to everything yet far enough to not hear all the noise. I really loved how It felt far away very secluded place but yet five minute drive down to the beach. We will be back!

Good value resor

This is our first time to Lupita having previously stayed at Tequila and Playacar several times. The reason we chose Lupita over Tequila was the recent renovation which Tequila will not get until this summer. If you are looking for 5 star luxury on the beach book elsewhere. If looking for value for money in a safe comfortable environment look no further. The resort is on par with the beach front rius just minus the direct beach access. The Lupita is clean and well organised, the staff work hard particularly house keeping and restaurant staff.I was very disappointed that I emailed the hotel several weeks prior to arrival to notify them we would be celebrating my daughters birthday. I provided full details of the date and asked for a special meal to celebrate. On arrival we were declined a booking on her birthday to the steak house as it was full. No attention to my request or past loyalty to Riu resorts, they also declined to make an exception to book us in. The Tui rep tried her best to help but no success. Really poor. The food is of a good standard, nice selection to meet all dietary needs. The steak house is particularly good.5th avenue is a 25 minute walk which is ok as long as it's not too hot, the beach club is around a 50 minute walk and probably a bit too far for most to consider. The hotel provides a shuttle but the buses are not frequent enough and can be over filled at peak times with people having to stand in the aisle. Not a relaxing experience. The pools are good the best being the main pool where you have access to the bar, restaurant and snack bar. The main pool is well maintained, clean and not over crowded. We never had a problem find a sunbed which were also of a good standard. There are no facilities at the quiet pool and kids pool needs updating. The rooms are modern and comfortable, but sometimes a little damp. We were on is ground floor and apparently this is a common complaint. The beds are firm but comfortable and a/c works wells. The fridge was always cold and well stocked. Shower in bathroom which always worked well. Overall for what I paid this was a great value holiday. I would probably not return to Lupita as tequila is having a facelift and this will be my next trip if returning to playa del Carmel.
