Our Opinion
On the lower end of the RIU hotel scale, the RIU Lupita is still a good hotel as long as you understand what you are getting. This hotel is not on the beach, it is smaller and does not have as many facilities as the other RIU hotels in the area. However, the service, food and rooms are still up to par with the other RIU resorts. The package price on this resort is often very attractive.

Wonderful resort, wonderful time

My husband and I stayed here Nov. 14-30, 2016 and stayed in room 1515.We thoroughly enjoyed this resort and while smaller in size, the staff and amenities certainly make up for it.The RIU staff work hard at keeping the resort very clean and ensuring you have what you need or want. Our sincere thanks to Milton (reception desk), Brigida (breakfast and lunch server who helped me with my husband while he suffered a bout of vertigo) and to Noe and Nuri (our evening servers). The staff who carved the fruit for the buffet and the ice sculptures did an exceptional job.We loved that all levels of staff/management work together to ensure a great experience. Kudos to you Riu!Our room was beautiful, and the food selection was very good.Aside from everything prepared, these folks know how to cook chicken and turkey. It was some of the best I have ever had.Thank you to the kitchen staff, who on most days, brought treats/snacks to the quiet pool. What a lovely touch!Even though we didn't have children with us, we think the staff did a good job with the children's show. The fact there is only 1 bar is not an issue as we found it to be well staffed. The coatis are around and are only bothersome if you have food at your lounger or patio/balcony. While we saw many of them, we were not bothered by them. They are as common as birds, not a big deal at all. The shuttle to the beach was always on time and was a great way to travel about. We dined at the steakhouse on the beach and would recommend the rib eye steak. Again, not only did they do an excellent job of presentation, the steak was cooked exactly how we ordered. If I were traveling as a single woman, I would definitely stay here. You feel very safe.If you go on the jewelry/tequila tour, be aware that you are stuck waiting until everyone from your bus is ready to go. We (5 couples) were left waiting over an hour until the last couple finished. If we had a recommendation it would be to enforce the dress code at dinner time. We weren't thrilled to see men coming in with tank tops and swim shorts, or women in bathing suits and cover ups, for dinner. There would be nothing wrong expecting men to put on a shirt with sleeves. Even a tee shirt would be better than what we saw, and ladies, throw on a pair of shorts or sundress. Also, there was one activities member who called people who didn't want to participate in main pool activities, lazy. People take vacations for many reasons, but primarily to relax so please don't call people lazy.Thank you for such a lovely experience Riu staff, we would definitely return to this resort.

A very good hotel complex

In my opinion this is a very good location to base yourself whilst in Playa del carmen. The complex is relatively small and friendly. The staff were very attentive and pleasant at all times. The rooms are OK and could be improved on, however they were clean and well maintained. House keeping were very good. The entertainment team were very good, and their own shows were, for me better that the professionals. The bar staff work hard to please and are constantly on the go-drinks were very good in comparison to other AI hotels i have visited. The beach as many readers will know is about 2 miles away, the bus service is exceptional always on time and stops for 5th avenue which is well worth a visit. If i have one complaint for the hotel please, please get the suspension on the bus looked at!!!The complex is situated within a gated, very secure small village and is perfectly safe to walk around. The highlight for me was the restaurant, i have coelics disease and as such must eat a gluten free diet, on arrival i presented my translated coelics leaflet to the head chef, from then on, every day he greeted me and took me through the full range of what i could or could not eat, many of which surprised me and I'm sure I could not eat in the UK due to contamination. The food and restaurant was exceptional. Huge thanks. In all very good, some areas could improve however on the whole a safe bet with no reasons not to book this hotel

Great resort and service

Riu Lupita is a " small " 5 star resort compaired to the rest of the resorts in Playa del carmen. And they have a second place right at the beach which you can reach by bus ( for free ). The all inclusive is also available here. Everything is there and so clean and tidy and the food is delicious. They even clean the outside walls of the appartments and stairs. The standard rooms are big enough and are fully equiped with a tv , big fridge with water, pepsi and beer ( restocked every day for free ) , airco and a fan. The beds might need some attention but we got a new matress after a call to the receptions. We have met several couples that did pay a lot more money than us( 1000 euros more !!!!!! ) for the same 16 day holiday but they were at the beach front. But there was always something wrong. Airco not working, noisy rooms or even wurse , the food was bad. Riu Lupita is not located at the beach but there is a free shuttle bus that goes from 7 am to 8pm every half hour. And the bus also stops in front of 5th avenue. Conclusion:If you want a great ,stress free holiday with everything the expensieve " beach front " resorts are offering for a lower price ... go Riu Lupita.

Great place for a romantic holidays in Mexico!

I was with my fiance in this hotel during almost 2 weeks holiday in Mexico and It was a great experience. Customer service is on the highest level, as well as a food and attractions. The hotel was safe, room was clear and fridge has ben refilled after every 2 days. It was very close to the bigger city - Play del Carmen where you can find local travel agencies with good prices for excursion into most famous places in Yucatan Peninsula (If you want contact to awesome local agency - send me a prv msg). There were also lots of shops and cozy restaurants. I would like to really recommend this place for people who are looking for lovely place in Mexico to spend their holidays.
