Our Opinion
On the lower end of the RIU hotel scale, the RIU Lupita is still a good hotel as long as you understand what you are getting. This hotel is not on the beach, it is smaller and does not have as many facilities as the other RIU hotels in the area. However, the service, food and rooms are still up to par with the other RIU resorts. The package price on this resort is often very attractive.

Relax and enjoy your holiday

This hotel is not one of those Grand 5* All-inclusive RIU Palace hotels. But if you are looking for a place to enjoy good food & drinks and nice friendly service and just relax during your holiday this could be the Place. RIU Lupita is better than the foreign agents' 3* indicates. Best there were clean recently renovated rooms, friendly service at the restaurants and bar, and good daily evening shows. Good food, in some days even great, and rich selection of drinks at the bar, both with great friendly staff, make up the positive experience despite of the large open main restaurant and one large bar area. In the restaurant, try turkey and marisco! and in the bar Mexican Coffee with barista's special fire show often followed by wild applause! The main pool is infront of the bar and restaurant, and smaller pool area next to the spa and night club. Hotel Buss service to the hotel beach club operates every 30 minutes and takes guests to the Carmen city center and Golf Club, too.Daily program by the animation team, tennis etc are available. Lupita is surrounded by Hard Rock Golf Course (prev. Playacar Golf Club) and we found a way to book reasonably priced all-inclusive Green Fees (incl. cart, breakfast, lunch, drinks and snacks both at club house and on the course) via TeeOff.com and GolfNow.com in the net. There are birds flying in the restaurant and bar, so be carefull. They try to steal food from your plate and table. In the lush garden surrounding the hotel buildings, large number of coates are looming around but they are just fun to look at. Some of them are also eager to share the unguarded drinks with you by the pool.

great affordable hotel

We just returned from 2 weeks at the Riu Lupita & enjoyed ourselves immensely. We were in room 1815 a one story attached bungalow just far enough down the winding street to not hear any noise from the pool, bar, restaurants and disco areas but only a 1 minute walk away. The smaller pool area was much quieter than the large pool. There are plenty of loungers. Buffet was large and had a plentiful selection. Several days a week they also had grills our by the pool. The beach club was a great place with lots of loungers and a nice, smaller lunch buffet. We went there one night to the steakhouse. Good service, large steaks although in Mexico they do not seem to know what medium/rare means, but the side dishes were an odd assortment and not very easy to eat as they were soggy from the steak juice. But it was a change from the usual buffet and such a nice view of Cozumel lights across the water. Our rooms were large and newly renovated. Great bathroom with a large shower and hair dryer. There is quiet central a/c rather than the old window/wall-type units with a thermostat on the wall Balcony-type patio with a drying rack. All the outsides of the buildings as well have been recently painted. The gym had brand new equipment as well. The entertainment at night put on by the animator staff was varied and mostly enjoyable. Exercises in the pool every am. Very clean resort with a homey feel with the winding streets and assorted 1/2/3 storey bungalow units. Hammocks hanging in 2 areas. The coatis were adorable and did not bother you unless you fed them. Do not leave your sliding door open as they can easily slide the screen door open and enter. I was very pleased to see how well the 4 or 5 resort cats were looked after. Food bowls at the guard station and we noticed that a couple of them had surgical scars so were being treated by the vets. There is also a kids club with their own pool. A big thank you to our favorite buffet employee Bridgita. Wonderful lady.

Needs some improvements

We stayed the week of February 4-11. We have travelled extensively throughout the Caribbean and stayed at many all inclusive resorts. The Lupita is one of 3 or 4 Riu properties in the same general area. It seems the Lupita is the lowest as we were not permitted to access any of the other properties. Anywhere we have been where there are more than one resort of the same chain access is allowed between guests. The resort itself was clean, the staff very friendly and welcoming and the food perhaps a little better than typical all inclusive fare. The entertainment exceeded other resorts. You do have to take the shuttle to the beach and walk 200-300 meters to access the private beach club. A bit inconvenient if you love the beach, if you are pool people no problem. However there is need for improvements in the following areas:1. No drink service at the beach, no waiters. You are nice and relaxed and have to trudge all the way back up to a small bar in the corner of the snack area and elbow tour way in to get a drink. By the time you get back to the beach chair your drink is warm. Waiters would cost them next to nothing as guests would gladly tip. Need to address this.2. Our bed was like sleeping on concrete. I have travelled extensively for 30 years with my work as well as vacations. NEVER had a bed so uncomfortable. We both woke up with sore backs everyday. Need foam bed toppers to make the guests more comfortable. If these 2 minor problems were addressed I would go back again. Everything else is quite nice.

5th trip to the Lupita!

This trip was our fifth to the Riu Lupita. The Riu Lupita is off the beach but does offer a free shuttle service that stops near 5th Ave to drop off people and then continues to the Lupita’s beach club (in all it’s less than 15 minutes). Anyone who complains that the resort isn’t on the beach either didn’t do their research or were misled by a travel agent. I’ve never seen any claim this is a beachfront property yet people seem to think it is.Check InAfter the 50 minute shuttle ride, we arrived at the resort. As there were only 4 of us checking in, it went really fast. We filled out the registration form, and were given our room key, and towel cards. Happily they were able to accommodate our building request.RoomI had emailed ahead and asked for building 16. The rooms have the typical set-up, double beds, dresser, TV, safe, etc. The room was clean and ready to go. There is no in room coffee maker nor a clock. Our housekeeping person was good. The room was clean every day and that’s what matters the most. We did notice that the daily towel art didn’t happen. Over the 2 weeks we had 2 of them. Our rooms had a patio that looked back towards the golf course. Very quiet and provided an excellent place to watch wildlife that’d roam around out there.FoodOne of the reasons we keep returning is the food – we both enjoy Mexican food. The buffet is a bit smaller than some other Riu’s but there never was an issue finding something good to eat. Supper was a different theme each night at the buffet so that was good. We tried the Steakhouse a la carte, which the menu is the same as all other Riu Steakhouse a la cartes. Even though the beach had been windy all day (and that is where the Steakhouse is), at night it was a nice light breeze. Hint: If you order the steak order it more cooked than you would at home – I ordered Well Done and it was still quite pink.Snacks – The snack bar is open and stocked between meals. After supper they have containers of fruit or sandwiches to take or you can heat up a hot dog or hamburger. NOTE: Supper at the Buffet: Men can wear shorts but must have a shirt with sleeves but we did see some men in tank tops – for some reason no one was turning them away. For the a-la cartes men are to wear pants, however shorts were being permitted.BarsThe main bar is now 24 hours. As it’s close enough to the room but far enough away to block sounds, we never heard any noise from that area. There is also a bar in the Disco as well as one on the beach. The Beach We made our way to the beach most days. Lots of loungers available regardless if we were down at 10:30 or 2:00 – never a shortage. The animation team were hosting some activities at the beach as well so there are things to do besides soak up the sun. PoolsWe made use of the main pool each day of our stay. The pool is a good size and while the towel game is in use, we normally never had an issue getting chairs so we didn’t worry. The resort also has an Adults-only pool in front of the Disco plus a kids only pool in the Kids Club area. They have a pool on the beach for Lupita guests to use. It’s not big but it allows you to use both the beach and a pool at the same time. EntertainmentUnlike last year, we seemed to have more “professional” shows this year. The animation staff did a couple good shows, including a new Elvis show. There were a couple we’d seen before (Michael Jackson as well as the Mayan show). The “embarrass the guest” nights were limited this year which was nice.ActivitiesSome of the activities were cancelled as the animation team were busy practicing the new Elvis show in the afternoons. We did manage to get most of them chatting with us though and joking around with us. Of the 11 animation crew members I counted, all but 2 were new from last year.TripsThe resort has the shuttle that will drop you off near 5th Avenue – it’s about a 5 minute walk from the drop off. We spent a couple afternoons on 5th Ave doing some shopping and stopping at one of the restaurants for lunch and a drink.GeneralI think the only issue, and I use that term lightly, that I saw was on Survey day (Riu does guest surveys periodically). The staff were out bringing drinks around the pool and serving fruit kabob’s around the pool – something that used to be almost daily. Turns out that night was Survey night. Seemed a bit underhanded to suck up to guests that day in hopes of everyone going to supper with positive thoughts to share.
