Great memories at the Palace!

Family of 4, 2 adults and 2 teens had a great stay at the RPM 16th – 30th July. First and lasting impressions are wow. Stunning reception area. Very plush with chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. After a long flight, we were met by a welcoming porter who took our luggage and showed us to reception. The pleasant reception staff checked us in. It was a very smooth check in and our luggage was in our rooms when we got there. The junior suites are very spacious and modern with a sofa in the lounge area, a hydromassage bathtub, WiFi, satellite TV, air conditioning and ceiling fan, a minibar and beverage dispenser, and a balcony or terrace with views of the hotel surroundings. King size beds or twin bedded rooms, all nicely decorated with power shower and separate toilet. There's also a free in room safe, iron & ironing board, hairdryer and a few toiletries. Our rooms were clean but had a slight damp feel as it’s an open plan bathroom/bedroom. We emailed the hotel before our arrival as we were celebrating our anniversary and an 18th birthday. We were allocated rooms together and top floor which was great but unfortunately no fountain view. Two days into the holiday we did end up with upgraded fountain view rooms as the girls had an infestation of very small ants crawling all over their woodwork in their original room. We didn’t notice it the first night as we were all tired after a long flight but the following day we noticed the problem near the beds, all over their clothes in the draws and items left on the top of the unit so we spoke to reception about moving rooms. Hans at reception was very accommodating and understanding, he assisted us with this and we eventually moved rooms after 2 nights. The rooms were fine after that no issues. There were always plenty of cold drinks in the mini fridge to choose from. We never used the optics. The only negatives which are very minor are if your a light sleeper you might want to bring some ear plugs because the corridors echo and the doors bang so you can hear other guests coming and going during the evening and early morning. We also noticed that our clothes were quite damp and smelt musty on return to the UK. The pool area was of a good size having 4 small pools instead of one big one. It is slightly separated from the main hotel area so a little walk to the pool area from your room and main hotel. It was a nice walk in the mornings. There is a Swim up bar, activity pool and 2 other pools, one bigger and one slightly smaller. Always plenty of beds. If you wanted shade you would need to get up at a reasonable time to get one. We were up most days because of the time zone so never had a problem getting a sun bed. There was a great atmosphere every day by the pool with music playing in the bar and a great entertainment programme to choose from if you wanted to take part. It wasn’t forced upon you though if you wanted to just chill by the pool instead. The foam party was such good fun, it takes place every Tuesday, we loved taking part in that. The entertainment team worked very hard day and night. With the humidity we really appreciated the friendly bar servers coming around taking our drink orders every day and serving us by our sunbeds. Nice touch. The pink fizz was very nice, I can recommend it. The swim up bar looked quite murky most days so we didn’t go in there much. The beach is gorgeous, the sea is so clear and calm, we loved the sea and went in a few times and fed the fish. A few days it was a bit hit and miss with quite thick seaweed in it. Not the hotels fault, but on the days when it was clear it was fantastic. The RIU workers worked extremely hard every day to clear it for us and they did an excellent job. You could walk along the beach to the sister hotels and use their facilities if you wanted. The hotel has a spa and they had cabana's on the beach where you could book and have a treatment in the cabana if wanted also on the beach they had a watersports hut where you could book free watersports such as Windsurfing, catamaran, kayaking, body board and snorkelling equipment. The food was of a very high standard and plentiful in the buffets day and evening. We ate in the A La carte restaurants once during our stay in the Steak house, Italian & Mexican. Wasn’t impressed so we ate mainly in the buffet restaurants. They had themed nights in the buffet most nights. Gala night was amazing, that evening we ate lobster and beef wellington, it was gorgeous. Most evenings there was a carvery, grill station, salad stations, vegetables, rice, seafood, pizza, pasta stations and much more. All food ate in the buffets was amazing and so much choice. We all loved the white chocolate fountain and crepe station for desert we ate crepes most evenings. The service was incredible, the waiters were constantly topping drinks up and taking plates away. On arriving, they always managed to find us a table even at busy periods. Honestly we were treated like royalty. We didnt have to tip but we did most days because the service was so good. Breakfast was amazing too, again plentiful. Omelettes, all types of eggs, breads, cereals, Donuts & pastries. Could even have Cava at breakfast too. The coffee shop in the lobby was a nice touch especially after dinner serving all types of speciality teas, coffee’s, milkshakes, savoury and sweet snacks. My hubby had an iced coffee, both my daughters had a milkshake and I had a peppermint tea most evenings after our meal and all very good. Most evenings we spent in the lobby bar which had a relaxed feel to it and was nice and air conditioned. You can eat and drink 24hrs a day in the PRM if you really want to. The hotel has a 24-hour lounge which has all types of drinks and snacks on offer should you require it, they also provide 24-hour room service menu too. Didn’t need the Thomson rep James but he seemed nice, spoke to him once about the exit tax. Trips with Thomson seemed quite expensive. Didn’t venture far out of the hotel because of the humidity. We got a taxi to Playa Del Carmen and 5th avenue a couple of evenings which was a nice change. Had a good walk around while we were there. There’s lots of designer shops, gift shops, bars, and restaurants with a buzzing atmosphere, we all felt very safe. Mexican people are very friendly. The staff are what makes this hotel very special. Fantastic service from everyone we met to name a few we can remember, reception Hans, Eduardo, the entertainment team, Fernando, Mario, Ana & Cesar, the waiters, Joel, Joequin, Pedro & Raul, bar servers Anmiel in the lobby and Omar by the poolside. Our room cleaner did a great job of keeping our room clean and tidy, the grounds staff constantly cutting the grass and hedges also the toilet maids doing an exceptional job of keeping the toilets by the poolside spotless every minute of the day as they were constantly being cleaned. Overall a fantastic 2 weeks had by all. A beautiful resort with some of the most friendly staff I have ever met. Thank you, RPM and all staff, for some great memories.

Great Resort but not up to Riu Palace Standards

Beautiful resort with great food but if you are an experienced Riu vacationer, I would not recommend this as a Palace because the service levels are not up to par as other Palace resorts you have gone to. There was not a go to person that we could count on. The beach service was very spotty as one day there would be a person waiting on you and then no one the next day, we asked at the bar about it and they said someone should be out there but there was no follow up and no one showed up. Riu has gone to a new policy of no reservations for their a la carte restaurants. You used to be able to make a reservation in the morning for either two times at a restaurant but now you just showed up and if they could squeeze you in then you were fine. This caused you to try to get to the restaurant when it opened or chance it that if they couldn't fit you in then you were going to the buffet. This was a MAJOR problem as you couldn't plan your day or you had to leave the beach or pool earlier then you wanted to if you wanted a la carte. The staff could not handle it as they never knew who was coming in. Again this was still a great trip but this was our 7th different Riu that we have been to and this one falls to the bottom of the list.

Hotel - First thoughts of this hotel absolutely stunning. Very modern outside and inside. The reception area is very grand and very light and airy. The staff are fantastic. On arrival we were given a complimentary cocktail which was very nice, the receptionist was very efficient and explained everything thoroughly, she then gave us directions to our room which for us was great as it was ground level.Room - Junior suite, had two double beds pushed together and was so spacious and bright. There is air conditioning and a large ceiling fan so the room stays as cool as you want it. The toilet is a small cubicle which for a large person could well be claustrophobic, the shower is large and has shower gel in a dispenser on the wall. There are two sinks also with plenty of room. There was a jacuzzi bath too which i didn't use and a curtain that separates this from the actual room. The only thing I would say here is that it's not very private for anyone when you have teenage kids on holiday with you. The tv had a couple of english channels which is cool for background noise. The mini fridge was great. I tipped the wee guy 100 pesos every so often and he filled the fridge to the brim, no complaints. Drinks included water, beer, pepsi, pepsi lite and 7up, the optics were in a locked cabinet containing tequila, brandy, rum and vodka, also available is coffee for use with the coffee machine. The balcony was large, bright and spacious too. The sun was on our side for most of the morning. Our room was right in the middle for everything so we were quite happy.Pools - The pools were lovely, lots of sunbeds and parasols, never a problem in finding a bed. Wasn't keen on the swim up pool, as people were in there all day long smoking and drinking so this didn't appeal to me. The activity pool was great, there is a foam party on a Tuesday and although I wasn't in the pool, it was great fun, lots of foam and balloons and everybody joined in whether they were in the pool or not. More activities required there I would say though. The pools aren't deep so this is great for non-swmmers or kids. The beach was just down a few steps from the pool area and was absolutely beautiful, there was lots of activities going on in that area. The waiter service was second to none, always dotting about with various drinks or you could order your own.Food - So there are various places to eat, the main dining-room I found to be fine at the start of our holiday but then became extremely busy. I think there should be someone on the front entrance all the time to escort you to a table, instead of you wandering around to find a free table. This happened more in the evening. Breakfast was divine and my favourite meal of the day. A la carte's were good too!! We tried the steakhouse and had both the lobster and steak - it was lovely. Fusion was different and the food was lovely. The Italian was ok, nice for a change. We tried the Mexican buffet at lunchtime, this was lovely and the chef made fresh fajitas on request, lovely guacamole and salsa too. The main buffet in my opinion lacked a bit of variety, we stayed at the Luxury Bahia Akumal last year and the variety was out of this world. Although I did enjoy the shrimp (king prawn). The staff in the main buffet were fantastic though and they really did look after you. We used the steakhouse for the lunch buffet and Nelcy was our waitress she was was amazing, hard working lady. Good job!!Bar - The lobby bar was beautiful and you could have anything you wanted. The staff were lovely and couldn't do enough for you. They had a pianist in the early evening which was nice if you just wanted to sit and relax for a while. Also in this area was the coffee shop, where you could get milkshakes, coffee, cakes etc. This was fabulous my daughter loved the milkshakes. Just around the corner was the 24 hour snack bar - this was amazing, there was a small section to sit and eat and also a section to sit on the sofa and chill. This room had internet computers and tv's. Snacks were hotdogs, burgers, nachos, bagels, savoury rolls, cakes etc and any type of drink you could want. BRILLIANT.Entertainment - Where do I start. We didn't find the entertainment to be very entertaining. The main shows didn't start until 9.45 which is quite late especially since you're awake from very early morning and for people with young children. If you're looking for fun entertainment the Tequila is the placed to go!!Location - This is absolutely fantastic, you can firstly use all the facilities at the other RIU hotels, failing that you have a 5 minute walk from the hotel to the local shops - lots of different wee places to go into (supermarket - souvenirs - clothes - food - starbucks). If you want to go to Playa del Carmen this is 5 minutes in a taxi and costs 90 pesos (£4 approx) this takes you to 5th Avenue. We walked back one day and at a slow pace it takes 30 minutes which is nothing. 5th Avenue is fab, shops, bars and restaurants a plenty. All in all a fastastic place to go and I would definitely go back, going to try the RIU Palace Riviera Maya next time.

Great hotel but Riu need to change

This was our third stay at this hotel, having stayed 10 years ago and 4 years ago just after it had been refurbished. We had such an amazing time we decided to go back again this year. The hotel and location is still great. I can not fault the service and the staff. However the entertainments team are very lazy here and did not go out their way to talk with guests, but neither did the management, so what do they expect. Usually Riu palace managers speak with guests on a daily basis, which was not seen. ISSUES1. 4 years ago we were treated extremely well, being frequent Riu palace customers. However beware, all brits are now given the worst rooms in the hotel with rear views. We were upgraded to a garden view, but were told we could only have a ground floor room as no one else wanted this!!!!!2. Having stayed at 6 Riu palaces in the last 4 years, the a la carte restaurants have been the same with the EXACT same menu every time. In Mexico, Jamaica, Costa Rica etc. I have tried to get answers about this issue, however, Riu state that it is looked at every 6 months! This is not good for a frequent visitor and this will be our last to a Riu palace due to this.

Fantastic & Fautless

First time in Mexico and would fully recommend.Check in was quick and smooth, I emailed in advance stating it was our 40th wedding anniversary and we were kindly given an upgrade. On walking into the room we got the WOW factor. We were overlooking the fountains on 1st floor and we were very grateful, albeit we had a high concrete balcony, but these are larger than the glass fronted balconies.Clean towels everyday, with toiletries replenished if required.Even got a turn down service at night, but after a couple of nights we felt this wasn't necessary, as the staff work hard enough anyway, so we put note on door handle!Pools and beach areas always kept spotlessly clean [although can't comment on swim up bar pool - as never used and heard some bad comments about how people were using it]Pools were very warm, towels can be changed daily always plenty of sun beds around the pool and on the beach. If I was to have a suggestion it would be more umbrellas and tables around the pools. The beach is cleaned everyday, whilst there, it seemed to be seaweed issue, but this was worked on every morning, and didn't really cause any problems. Beach staff are constantly working. The gardens and grounds are kept beautiful and spotless, the staff work endlessly. We were fortunate and did not get any bites. Food is always fresh, plentiful and vast variety at lunch or dinner - in fact too much choice - but not a bad thing ...apart from the waistline. We tried speciality restaurants: Steak house, Italian, Japanese & Fusion, but not the Mexican, we only paid 1 visit to each as the Don Julien buffet was so good.Men have to wear trousers to the speciality restaurants, but shorts allowed in the buffet and steakhouse.Although it did seem a pity to see some people in the evening in the buffet with 'very casual' clothesWe did briefly visit the other 4 Rui hotels in the vicinity during the day & evening, but being bias we felt they all had a little something missing and was pleased we had chose the RPM, which had the edge. Met some lovely people, the staff are always smiling and most pleasant, we would have no hesitation in recommending RPM
