Amazing but read for some good tips !!

We came in June 2017 for a friends wedding consisting of 60 plus guests ranging from young couples to older couples in their early 60's the youngest child was 1 and the oldest was 13 and everyone had a great time ,my family was me , my girlfriend my 10 year old son and 13 year old daughter , the hotel is very clean and staff are always cleaning all day long , the food is amazing and there is something from everyone but on a 2 week holiday you do need to use the a la carte restaurants to mix it up a bit , we used steak and lobster house 3 times and Mexican once plus because it is a Riu palace we got to use the other Riu hotels for nights out and you can drink and eat in them and use their pools , because our kids were a bit older than rest of kids in our group they didn't find the entertainment in the day or night that great in our hotel so to mix it up a bit we spent a few nights in the Riu Tequila which is dead opposite and they have a air con sports bar with plenty of pool table air hockey and arcade games. This hotel is a bit livelier than the palace and we enjoyed the atmosphere over there but I am glad we stayed in palace because it it posher better cocktails and better rooms . My tips are to do activities on the poorer weather days , we went to excaret which was amazing and probably one of the best things we have done with my kids swimming in underground caves and rivers snorkelling and swimming with dolphins and we stayed for the night time show which was class it is an expensive day over £500 in English but I think well worth it and swimming with dolphins can be that on its own in other parks but we got a good deal. We also done quad biking in the jungle which we booked in Riu tequila car park for £50 per person for 2 hour tour. The beach is amazing the pools are great , remember to tip the staff because they look after you more if you do we tipped little and offer 40 Mexican pesos is about £2 , bring plenty of high factor for kids because when it's hot it is hot and even factor 50 can be penetrated, we bought mosquito bands and spray and never got bit until the day we forgot to use it. It is hard to spend money in hotel but when you leave it is excursions are expensive but worth it and 5th avenue is good for night out and is safe but you do get pestered a bit by looky looky men , I recommend using all the other Riu in play Del carmen to mix it up a bit and get your money's worth

Perfect stay at the Riu Palace.

This hotel was fantastic - we hadn't initially booked this hotel we were meant to stay at Riu Yucatan but upon checking in the hotel told us that they were fully booked and offered us transport to the Riu Palace.....much to our delight. Staff all around the hotel were helpful and couldn't do enough for you. During our weeks stay we managed to try all the restaurants and the buffet - the food was great and there was lots of choice.Pool areas were not huge but it still catered for everybody with some quieter spots away from the entertainment.

Update on The Riu Palace

We just got back Monday June 19th 2017 after an amazing time. We started out a bit rough with rooms we didn't like, but we got the upgrade with a smooth transition. Our new room had a great view in a great location.Everything about this place was great. It is a 30 minute walk into Playa 5th ave where all the action is or a 15 minute cab ride. The Riu estates has it's own little town with street vendors and a little mall. Very cool. The food was excellent - not one complaint, however the room service menu was lacking in variety.Everything else was awesome. The beach was great with little to no seaweed. The staff are amazing. We met an incredible young lady Dafne, who really helped us out. She was kind and gave us great info on where to go for dancing. We are grateful to her!We will definitely come back and I think this was the first time ever that I was sad to leave a resort. We just felt so at home there. We miss you RIU PALAC MEXICO!

Two weeks of relaxation.

After a long journey we arrived at the hotel and was greeted with a cool drink and a friendly smile from Omar on reception. We were allocated our room, given a map of the hotel and the surrounding area and Omar marked all the key restaurants etc on the map and advised we were free to use the other five Riu Hotels in Playacar and if we were in Cancun we could make use of the other Riu hotels there too. Omar also advised they had allocated me a quiet room overlooking the gardens as they saw I would be celebrating my birthday during my stay. The grounds were kept immaculate by the gardeners, they would be out most days picking up leaves, pruning the trees etc and on the rare occasion there was any litter this would be cleared away quickly. The rooms are spacious and very clean. It had a mini fridge containing water and sorry drinks which were replenished most days and the room also had an optics drinks dispenser for a number of spirits. The open plan bathroom may not be ideal for everyone although it's the bath and sinks which are open. The toilet is in a separate cubicle and the shower is enclosed. The hotel is located in the Playacar gated community so there is a mix of hotels and residential properties, however this hotel is located next to a number of it's sister hotels - the Yucatan, Tequila and Playacar. The service we received from all staff at the resort was fantastic. Employees would always say hola on passing. There is a small shopping centre a short walk away on the other side of the road and the walk into the main shopping area (5th Avenue) is around a 30-40 minute walk depending on how quickly you walk. It's a single road to 5th Avenue or you can walk along the beach to get there also. The buffet restaurant was open for breakfast and evening meals when we visited had a wide variety for even the most fussiest of eaters and regularly held theme nights. The wait staff worked incredibly hard and were really friendly and always smiling. We tended to have lunch at the restaurant near the pool, but there was also a beach BBQ most days. The poolside restaurant had a wide range for lunch including Sushi, Chinese, Mexican, pizza and pasta as well as American items such as hot dogs etc. There are a number of a la carte restaurants, we only tried the steakhouse. You were given both starters to share, a choice of mains and then a trio of little desserts, we also had quite a few glasses of champagne with our meal. The steakhouse food wasn't as great as we had hoped for - the steaks were a bit gristly and greasy, but the service was good and it made a change eating in a quieter and more intimate setting, especially as some of the tables overlook the beach and ocean. There is a pool bar and also a drinks waiter service around the pools which were frequent and the area was kept cleared of used cups etc. There are a number of pools, one containing a swim up bar. There were plenty of sun beds around the pools and on the beach and generally you could find a sun bed at anytime during the day.The hotel doesn't really have any sea views given the location of the building, the gym, pools, pool bar and some palm trees are between the building and the beach. We had a room at the end of the building so could see a tiny sliver of a sea view. The hotel offers excursions through their Scuba Caribe water sports centre - we brought our excursions from Ricky, he was very knowledgable about the excursions on offer so we'd recommend talking to him to book any excursions. All in all we really enjoyed our holiday and are hoping to return soon.

Something missing?

Stayed 06/06 to 17/06. Room 1109,no complaints. Great shower, comfy beds. Optics put to good use! Room kept spotless by cleaners, a credit to the company. Ice machine on all floors had asked for an upgrade several months before leaving, heard nothing? Went to get room card key replaced, told upgrade available tomorrow? To late by then had already settled in? Communications issue somewhere? Beach great, but had to chase the shade to avoid getting scorched! Pool area to hot for my liking, did swim though. 24 hour buffet very convenient. Coffee bar in lounge got well used, strawberries dipped in chocolate a nice treat. Entertainment was ok, typical all inclusive shows? Drinks/bar service excellent, never waited more than a couple of minutes. Ate in the buffet all the time. Did attempt the steakhouse twice, always booked with weddings, shame could have used a change? Grounds immaculate, not a lot more to say? Now the "something missing" bit? Could have been anywhere in Latin America,Spain? Never saw anything in the hotel to indicate we were in Mexico, not even a sombrero? Was a flag on the beach on several days? Was a bit clinical in this respect. Trust me, we did enjoy it. The mariachi band was the only Mexican themed thing in the hotel? Fourth time in Mexico, other resorts have towering thatched bars/restaurants, swing bars etc, made you feel like your abroad somewhere? Would not return because of this. Prefer the more authentic Mexican style.
