Our Opinion
A fun, family oriented resort located across the street from the RIU Yucatan. Not beachfront but in a beachfront complex; overlooks the golf course. Good food and services. Has a disco and a lively crowd. Good for families. Walking distance to Playa del Carmen. This resort is perfect for vacationers who want the Riu all inclusive experience, but don't have it in the budget to stay at one of the beachfront resorts.

It was ok

We have stayed in quite a few all inclusives (all price ranges) in mexico and Dominican. As with all resorts there are pros and there are cons.Pros: The entertainment staff were amazing and worked tirelessly from morning until late at night. Always had a smile and tried to create fun. They were fabulous! The buffet food was good and always a ton of variety (when it was stocked). Playacar is a gorgeous little gated community with walking trails and if youre willing to walk some stores for whatever knick knacks you could want. The beach is stunning and body surfing the waves was a wonderful way to spend the days. The walk to the beach is short and welcome after all the food. The restaurant (Lupita) for lunch was fantastic and always clean, props to the poor fella grilling paninis in the heat and keeping a smile on his face. The pool was clean and fun to swim in with lots of activities from the staff. Also there was never any problems getting a lounger (beach or pool). The room was comfortable, safe was included and the AC worked.Cons: Like others have said the shower is awkward to get out of and theres no light. There was also some mold growing throughout it in the grout...but I guess what can you expect in a humid country? Our toilet ran constantly. The fridge in the room did not chill any of the drinks. The main buffet the staff were lukewarm at best. We tipped and used manners so I'm not sure why we always seemed to receive a frosty reception, however what could you do. Usually there were no clean tables available if you came 30-45 mins after it opened. They ran short on cutlery and servers never offered to refill or even get our party drinks, we were constantly self serving. Having stayed at other resorts with fabulous service, this was honestly disappointing and frustrating. Also as one other person commented, when you checked out it was honestly a disheartening process. As soon as you showed up they were short and unfriendly and immediately cut off your wrist band even if you still had a few hours to wait (this is new to us as most resorts have always let you keep the bracelet to enjoy the amenities until you get on your transfer). Checking out? Yes? Keys? Wrist? See you next time, and please fill out a trip advisor review! And they were gone.Overall I am satisfied as it is very cost effective to come here in comparison to other resorts, however I would not list it close to the best and probably will not return.

Riu Tequila, Playa del Carmen (Playacar)

Great hotel well maintained with everything you might need. Located just a few minutes south of 5th ave, it'll cost you 90 Mexican pesos for a taxi ride.To get to the beach or the hit pool at Riu Yucatan, you'll need a 5 minutes walk since the hotel is just cross the street. As for food, nothing amazing but still very good, much better than what you would find in Cuba.

Best holiday ever!

I cannot praise this hotel enough. Myself and my partner stayed at the Tequila for 10 amazing days and it was an incredible experience. The rooms were clean and welcoming with a spacious balcony. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The grounds were beautiful and the animals made the hotel extra special. This is not a hotel for people who like the modern clinical feel, this hotel has a wonderful Mexican vibe and makes you feel at home. Our waiter (Jeremias) was such a lovely man. He was so friendly and looked after us every day in the buffet restaurant, can't thank him enough! The people that moan about the Coaties need to realise that they were there first. They will only bother you if you start feeding them, so don't. I cannot express enough how strongly I feel about the pending refurbishment of this beautiful hotel...just a lick of fresh paint and maybe some new furniture in the rooms is all it needs. Please don't ruin the vibe of this hotel and make it look like all the others! To sum up...if you like good food/drinks, amazing service, friendly animals and you want something a little different with it's own personality, go to the RIU Tequila. You won't be disappointed :-) :-) :-)

Awesome experience and value

Absolutely one of the best AI experiences. This is my 10th stay in an All-Inclusive, ranging from low to mid-high end. Two years ago at the RIU Palace in Puerto Vallarta. I'll present a balanced review, but recognize that everyone has their "must haves", so take this into account when reading reviews. Food: The Tequila had the best buffet food of all the resorts. They covered the staples and had enough variety so you didn't get bored. A few of my favorites…. Huge vats of guacamole every day, every meal (this was not available in my recent visits, including the Palace). Grilled mussels (wow!) and I'm not a fan. Calamari, vegetarian dishes, tons of desserts, including an item that was being made fresh (doughnuts, fritters, crepes..). Wine and beer at all meals. Steak restaurant: You no longer need reservations!!! They have two seating times, so just pick one. The steak had good flavor, but we were advised to order rare because they overcook it.... wrong! It was too rare, but that was our fault. Flavor was great. Asian: No reservations, just show up. Buffet style. Sushi, curry, hot-spicy… you name it. It was a favorite of two of us and average to others. Best part is you can then go to the buffet if you need something more.24 hour food in the sports bar: A few sandwiches, burgers, hotdogs, fruit, chips, occasional Danish and a microwave. Ok in a pinch, but I’d suggest a few additions to the choices or have the main restaurants cross over in times, without a gap. Drinks, all the typical drinks and even made me a brandy old fashioned. Suggest that the tequila shooters not be allowed during the performance due to the noise and disrespect to the performers. Alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks in coconuts on Wednesday afternoon, poolside. Entertainment: Hands down the best entertainment of any AI. My experience in the past was that the entertainment staff was the same as the pool and had a summer camp quality. Not the case at the Tequila. They had a few nights where the dancers came in and the quality was amazing. A real production. The costuming was gorgeous and high quality. The Mexican night had a feel of the Lion King (feather costumes that stretched 8 feet across and 5 high. Michael Jackson looked amazing, right down to his nose and dance moves of course. I can't say more. Go to the shows and go often. You will not be disappointed. Even when the staff performed, they had guests that came in and did a few performances/skits. Stilts, fire, and areal performances. Best part of the vacation. The disco is great to have onsite. We took three kids 18-22, they enjoyed it and we felt safer than had we gone to Cancun. One night they went into Playa with the staff for a fee of $35. They enjoyed that too and it gave us parents piece of mind. Pool side activities: There are two pools, one with the swim up bar and one that had staff activities. It was nice to be away from the all the noise. We didn't participate but others looked like they had a blast. They gave out awards and gifts for all of the winners prior to the nightly show. Pool could use a little TLC with the tile. Plenty of seating, sun and shade. People are not on top of each other as in the other beach resort. New chairs were nice. Coati, animals that are in raccoon family. There are plenty of them, but if you just leave them alone, they will leave you alone. However, leave a cup with fruit or alcohol, you will be sharing it. Also, if you think you’re tricky and put a doughnut in your bag, they will smell it and try to open your bag. Bring a beach bag with a zipper and hang it from the palapa. Do not feed the dang animals. One will turn into 30 in seconds. Room: I suggest one that is on the outer ring if you want quiet. It’s a bit further to walk, but you also get to see the coati feed at 6pm. The inner ring is closer, but the pool music may wake you up if you like to sleep late.Yes, the room is dated. Very dated. In desperate need of upgrading the bedding (brown blankets), towels (old and rough) and bed (hard, but I liked it). Our bed was HUGE, bigger than a king. It could sleep three adults or two adults and two kids easily. I’ve never seen such a huge bed. Our kids had two full beds pushed together, with another portable bed. My biggest gripe is the lack of toiletries. They have hand soap and in the shower a dispenser with shampoo and body wash. I prefer to have upgraded, personal products. I have long hair, which after a pool or salt water was hard to wash. So, bring your own. Mini fridge with assorted water, beer, soda and optics (booze). Replaced every other day. Nice choice. Beach: Very short 7 min. walk or take the shuttle (driver has a siesta from 1-3 and so not available then). A ton of chairs, water is breathtaking and you have full use of their sister resort. We ate lunch and had drinks at the pool. In contrast to our resort, it is very modern and not to my taste. Their pool was also too crowded. We loved the ability to be able to go to the beach, spend the day and then go back to our resort. Spending the day at the pool bar of the Riu Tequila, was a favorite thing to do. Wish it stayed open beyond 6pm. In summary, this was one of my favorite resorts and I’d suggest it to anyone, especially if you like a good value, want your adult children close and like entertainment. I wrote mid-range, but we received a super value by purchasing separate air. We purchased through Hotel.com and also monitored the site with tripadvisor. When the priced drooped we booked and then cancelled the first reservation.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place.

I think my title says it all but will go into a bit more detail. Our 4th time there with my family (2 kids under 5) April 12-19. My husband and I feel like home when we go there. The staff is amazing. Samuel at front desk is super helpful and very friendly. He remembers us and calls us by our names. Hotel very clean (did not see one bug in our suite). The food is great. So much variety and very tasty food. The entertainment staff very nice to my kids and the shows are very professional. Both my kids had a blast. So much activities to do. Shooting, pingpong, volleyball, soccer. The play night was lots of fun, almost every night something is going on. You are NEVER bored. We have been to different hotels to try something else but end up being very bored or food not as great as Tequila or something else. Tequila has never let us down, and we already said out next trip will be there again. Thank you for such giving my family and I such a great vacation. Looking forward to coming back very soon!
