Our Opinion
A fun, family oriented resort located across the street from the RIU Yucatan. Not beachfront but in a beachfront complex; overlooks the golf course. Good food and services. Has a disco and a lively crowd. Good for families. Walking distance to Playa del Carmen. This resort is perfect for vacationers who want the Riu all inclusive experience, but don't have it in the budget to stay at one of the beachfront resorts.

This splendid resort offers all the fabulous RIU qualities with great value, friendly impeccable service, and fun filled activities. The RIU Tequila borders a 18-hole golf course located in elegant Playacar, and it's beautiful Spanish Colonial architecture, welcomes the feeling of charm & comfort.

Location: A short walk or 3-minute shuttle to the beach, 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen, 60 minutes to Cancun, 45 minutes from the airport.

  • Large outdoor pool and lush grounds with monkeys
  • Kids Club with playground and pool
  • Good selection of dining choices with great buffet
  • Walking distance to white sand beach (free shuttle available)
  • Close to downtown Playa del Carmen

Alreday booked to go back!

What can I say about this hotel..... other than perfect! The Tequila being one of three you can use in my opinion is the best out of the lot. OK, maybe not quite as posh as the other two but what it lacks in chic more than makes up for in every other department. The staff and entertainment crew were brilliant and every night was something different on the stage... admittedly the prize giving and kids disco before got a bit mundane, but were kept amused by the variety of animals that wanted to eat off your table in the duration. By this time though I would be on the tequila which is free flowing and manages to keep the pain down from the mosquito bites! ( Yes you are in a jungle and YES the humidity is a killer) Thanks god for Aircon!.The hotel itself is ideally situated with a 5 minute walk to the beach, but you can get the buggy from outside reception which can be an experience depending on which of the drivers you get... Speedy Gonzalez or Driving Miss Daisy. The Beach..... to die for! and great fun nicking the bread from breakfast to feed the fishwho love it which then attracts the bigger fish... beware. There are the usual beach activities including Jet-ski's and ParaSailing for about £50The beach brigade off anything from Silver to Canabis but are no hassle and soon get to know when you are interested or not.The hotel itself is spotless and the rooms are done daily with a new towel animal courtesy of Horatio who must have studied origami at some point. (only downside was lack of power sockets and because of the forest you are in little sunlight so drying your pants is a problem. We did think at one point attaching them to the ceiling fan... but we thought that would attract more mosquitos, so passed it up.The drinks cabinet (or personal bar) is re-stocked when empty... so every two days in our case (tequila, Vodka and whiskey) which makes a pleasant change from the Travelodge. The restaurants are what they say! 5 STAR and have the choice of Mexican on the beach, Chinese and finally the Steak House which you do need to book for from 7.The main restaurant caters for all... but stay clear of Lurkio the big waiter... miserable sod!Getting into playa is 90 pesos from the lobby but you could walk it in about 15mins if you are mad. If the wife likes the retail therapy she will be in heaven with all the main brands on the strip. Here though you do get hassled, but not in a Turkish dragging you in the shop by the hair approach. This is the main ferry port to Cozumel which unless you do a trip while you are there isn't worth doing as it is a smaller town and more hassle. I do however suggest you get the ferry (600 pesos return) just to enjoy the live bands and wind in you hair.Trips.... too wet and hot so didn't bother, but from all accounts the Pirate ship is worth a look and great fun.Hope this helps! one other thing chocolate martini's

Great location

This hotel is amazing, went for my 50th birthday, group of 15 family and friends. Still the old fashioned hacienda type of decor, lovely and traditional, perfect. Checking in was painless, very organised and very fast. Food was amazing every day with loads of choice. We had a large group and the restaurants catered for the large table needs every time we all ate together, even if that meant shuffling tables around, we did try to give them notice when this was going to happen but if impromptu, it was no problem, nothing is a problem for the staff at this hotel. The bar staff are amazing, I have no idea how they keep up but they are so efficient and no waiting around for an age. There is a small disco/club on the hotel site, opens at midnight when the other bars close. Rooms were lovely, clean and large, the cleaning crew are very thorough and clean towels daily. The hotel is in a gated community so very safe, all people in and out of the hotel are checked with wrist bands or passes. It is close to town centre, taxi ride but cheap. Taxis are outside waiting to take you to wherever you need to be. The entertainment staff were great, we had some younger people, (18-30) they took them out as a group and made sure they were safe and catered for. This is my second trip to Mexico (first was cancun) this one was the best.

Terrible rooms

We arrived on a Thursday evening and were very unhappy with the room. This hotel has a nice lobby and good food variety. But the rooms are terrible and outdated - with old plastic hangers, old telephones, very worn bedsheets, pillowcases and bedcovers. The beds themselves are definitely very used with the springs being very noisy- should seriously be replaced. I called reception to change our room from double beds to a Queen in hopes of getting a better bed. The absurdity of the reception was to tell me that all rooms have double beds - when that is a lie. This is my first impression of the hotel - a disappointment. We were expecting better level of rooms from Riu.

Fantastic holiday in an authentic hotel

Second visit to Mexico and can honestly say this holiday was far better than the first. The hotel seemed basic at first but that was part of the charm, truly authentic Mexican style and decor. We visited the sister hotels (the Riu Playacar and Riu Yucatan and both are very nice and modern but a little soulless. there's no beach at the hotel but you can use the beaches at the Playacar and Yucatan, both around 10 minutes walk away - both breathtaking and well worth the walk,.. Playa Del Carmen is only a 25 minute walk and well worth a visit, the only downside are the people hassling you to buy a trip, we went in the day and it felt very safe, not sure about walking there at night though, probably better to catch a taxi, having said that there's little evidence of any crime and its probably safe to walk there at night - it is a gated community after all with plenty of guards at the entrance gates to keep out undesirables. The accommodation consists of blocks of four or six rooms; none were greater than two storeys, the rooms were clean and spacious and the air conditioning was a blessing, the rooms also have a cupboard with optics but as it is was an all inclusive hotel we didn't feel the need to use them, perhaps different if you have kids and you have to go back to your room early. Some people complain about the toilet / shower area not affording privacy because there's no door; only a curtain, not a problem for us as a couple but I can see that it could be a problem for families. The hotel pools (there's two) had plenty of sun loungers and were clean / safe (no cracked tiles etc) . The hotel only has two restaurants and a buffet (and two bars) and you can use restaurants (and bars) in the sister hotels but the food was so good at the Tequila we never felt the need to do so. The animation team has to be the best we've ever seen, it was worth staying here just to see them. As other travellers have said don't book trips through the Thomson reps, they're really expensive, take a 5 minute walk to the shops (turn left at the hotel entrance) and you'll find 2 or 3 places that sell the same trips at a far more realistic price. There is a rumour that the hotel is going to be modernised, hopefully that doesn't happen the fact that it has an authentic Mexican feel and atmosphere is part of it's charm. I don't like long haul flights but would definitely make an exception for the Tequila; can't wait to go back!
