Our Opinion
A fun, family oriented resort located across the street from the RIU Yucatan. Not beachfront but in a beachfront complex; overlooks the golf course. Good food and services. Has a disco and a lively crowd. Good for families. Walking distance to Playa del Carmen. This resort is perfect for vacationers who want the Riu all inclusive experience, but don't have it in the budget to stay at one of the beachfront resorts.

This splendid resort offers all the fabulous RIU qualities with great value, friendly impeccable service, and fun filled activities. The RIU Tequila borders a 18-hole golf course located in elegant Playacar, and it's beautiful Spanish Colonial architecture, welcomes the feeling of charm & comfort.

Location: A short walk or 3-minute shuttle to the beach, 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen, 60 minutes to Cancun, 45 minutes from the airport.

  • Large outdoor pool and lush grounds with monkeys
  • Kids Club with playground and pool
  • Good selection of dining choices with great buffet
  • Walking distance to white sand beach (free shuttle available)
  • Close to downtown Playa del Carmen

Yet again another fantastic holiday.

Arrived on the 14th September for 2 weeks (not long enough) and this was my husbands 16th time and my 8th time, so we don't like it much here lol. Yet again lovely choice of food and drinks. Room fridge restocked every 2 days. Our room was always clean and fresh and Pedro did a brilliant job and was so happy and polite, pleasure to know him. Love the coati and their babies this year. Leave them alone they leave you alone, they are wild animals and we are in THEIR ENVIRONMENT, they will knock over your drinks, we learnt this so bought bubba cups with lids on, the drinks stay cooler longer and don't get nicked by them lol. You are told that they will go in bags if they are left open, etc, best thing to do is hang your bag under the wooden brolly and it will be safe enough. Big shout out to all the staff who always make us feel like royalty every time we arrive here. They work very hard and it shows, they should all be proud of themselves. The place does need some TLC but IT DOESN'T NEED TO LOSE IT'S CHARACTER, that's why we go to the Tequila because it has the Mexican feel, the other hotels are bland and they can be anywhere in the world. Pet hates lol: Ignorant people that smoke in the no smoking sunbathing area, you know who you are, they read the sign on the wooden brolly and then choose to ignore it, if you say anything you just get abuse. I sunbathe there mainly because I have asthma, there is the other 3/4 of the sunbathing area to smoke but they are just to lazy and don't care about anyone else :( they are the nearest to the swim up bar so they can just smoke, then roll into the pool to get a drink!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! People also shooing away the coati even if they have no food or drink on them, they will just walk away from you, if you constantly waste your time to shoo them away they think you have something hahaha I have lay on the sunbed watching these idiots doing it and they then have watched me ignoring the coati as they just sniff our area and then walk away, no mither from them no problem. People being rude to the staff, they do not deserve this, a simple please and thank you goes along way. Ignoring them like they are not there is not nice and it's a good feeling to do it. Wifi: I had no problem with it and we also got it in our room as well. But unlike most people wifi isn't life or death for us on holiday, we actually like to go out and explore this wonderful country not just sit on our phone/tablet etc and talking on snapchat so that everyone can hear your conversation lol.

Superb friends holiday

Just returned from the rui tequila and what a great hotel ,it is very traditional in style which is in keeping with mexico ,the hotel is very clean and the staff are lovely ,friendly and polite, all the bars and restaurants are super with drinks and food to suit everyone ,we never had one bad meal in all our stay , with the rui hotels you are allowed to use sister hotels which are of the same star rating as yours which was brilliant because the yucatan across the road was also super ,this hotel has a modern and more up to date decor which again is spotless , again great food and drinks in all areas but with the added bonus of the beach , all animation team during the day was slightly better than the tequila but the night entertainment the tequila was brilliant with great shows to entertain all , both great hotels of a good quality standard . Only one snag in the tequila we found the abundance of coati running about a bit off putting especially round the pool area so beware if you have food or drink as they appear from nowhere and try and steal anything they even raid your bag when your back is turned , but apart from that a super place to spend your holiday to do as much or as little as you like, will certainly be back !👍oh plus good WiFi but only in certain areas not in rooms .

So Little To Complain About - These Are Only Suggestions

This is only our second trip to Mexico and Riu Tequila resort was a happy surprise with very little to complain about. We had a wonderful experience (I gave it 5 stars), but review readers are most interested in pit falls and problems. So here are the things I would change about the resort if I could. I like to stay in a hotel room with a deadbolt. Our room only had a keyed passage set and while there is a security "peephole" in the door, there isn't any interior security lock or brace. The rooms have a simple keyed lock. If you are picky about room security, you may want to consider bringing your own door security device to secure your room while you are sleeping. That being said, at no time did I ever feel unsafe in my room. Our biggest complaint is something that is very difficult to resolve and that is the swarms of coati (Mexican raccoons) that surround the resort. We were literally driven out of the Lupita snack buffet closest to our building by these endearing little guys. If the eating area is relatively empty, they encircle your ankles while you eat and, heaven forbid, if there is a crumb of food left on an adjacent table. These critters crawl all over the empty chairs and table tops (and their feet have been all over the resort grounds). I would recommend that you pump some of the readily available hand sanitizer on a paper napkin and give your granite table top a wipe down before you decide to dine there. These little guys are on the prowl day and night. I will say, they eat lots of crawling critters so there is likely fewer ants, flies and grasshoppers because of their presence.I also echo the concerns of others who have posted to this site about cigarette smoke. There are, however, lots of non-smoking areas at the resort but the air is sometimes heavy, still and humid so the cigarette smoke really can hang in the air. The resort is large, however, so if it is too much for you, just relocate to fresh air space. There are also non-smoking areas that seem to be respected by the hotel guests who smoke. On the plus side - there are so many great things to say about this place. The food was interesting, plentiful, safe and delicious. I loved foraging through the buffet. As others have commented, the staff are welcoming and truly helpful. No one pressures you about tipping, so for me, that makes me MORE inclined to tip those workers who give personalized, outstanding service. We stayed in room 2117 which is at the back of the resort. This may seem like “a downer” for some but for us it was great . The room was quiet and being at the back of the resort forced us to walk off our food and drink. Everything in our room worked and the air conditioning provided a welcome respite from the sun. The mattress on our bed was perfect and the linens clean. We also enjoyed visiting the beach and using the services at the Riu Yucatan. We felt just as welcome there as we felt at the Riu Tequila. Hope you have a great experience too.

Lovely hotel, fabulous beach

Am sat in reception waiting to be picked up by the coach to go home after two lovely weeks at this hotelGood bits:The grounds and the hotel are kept wonderfully clean and tidy, the pool area is a mix of sunny and shady places depending on what you likeFood is ok, nothing exceptional, steak restaurant and bamboo Asian are also goodThere is a regular shuttle bus to the beach and sister hotel Riu Yucatan, this stops at siesta time of 1-3pm but is still only a ten minute walk along a private pathIf you like animals you will love this hotel, loads of birds, South American guinea pigs and Coatimundi, Coati's: they can be a bit snappy so take care if you do feed them, if you have a ground floor room they raid your terrace looking for food, they also are prone to tipping over drinks if they see them unattended, but apart from that they are cuties especially the babies All the staff are friendly but a special mention to Dalia at the bar near reception and Laura our waitress for breakfast both top class ladies always smilingNot so good bits:The hotel is dated and is in need of a refurb which I believe is happening August 2017, the ground floor room we requested was as dark as a cave most of the time and at night we kept the loo light on to find our way about, there is no light in the shower cubicle which makes it a bit dim and on my last shower this morning before leaving the shower control handle came off in my hand, I had to leave it running until maintenance arrived, which was quite quickly I really do hope that in next years refurbishment they keep the lovely 'colonial' feel of this gem of a hotel although the Yucatan and Playacar are very shiny and new looking they have lost some of the Mexican soul that the Tequila has

  • Elainesilver :

stayed at Rui tequila hotel for 10 days the hotel was fantastic the rooms was cleaned daily fresh towels left out daily with a animal towel left on the bed . the surrounds was very nice they worked every day to keep it spotless. you could change your beech towels daily. the staff was very helpful with a lovely choice of food from English ,Asian, Chinese, Mexican was spoilt for choice. the waiters were very friendly and helpful the entertainment was out of this world. You have a beach buggy to take you to the beach which was 5 mins away or 10 mins walk . you have little coatimundis that were running around but very friendly and harmless and funny to watch their little antics.i would well recommend this hotel there was a bar in your room with a safe for your valubles. and you could use all the other Rui hotels. didn't want to leave and would certainly go back.
