Our Opinion
A fun, family oriented resort located across the street from the RIU Yucatan. Not beachfront but in a beachfront complex; overlooks the golf course. Good food and services. Has a disco and a lively crowd. Good for families. Walking distance to Playa del Carmen. This resort is perfect for vacationers who want the Riu all inclusive experience, but don't have it in the budget to stay at one of the beachfront resorts.

Overview
This splendid resort offers all the fabulous RIU qualities with great value, friendly impeccable service, and fun filled activities. The RIU Tequila borders a 18-hole golf course located in elegant Playacar, and it's beautiful Spanish Colonial architecture, welcomes the feeling of charm & comfort.

Location: A short walk or 3-minute shuttle to the beach, 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen, 60 minutes to Cancun, 45 minutes from the airport.

Highlights
  • Large outdoor pool and lush grounds with monkeys

Lovely hholiday

The room was basic, no kettle or tea making facility's but we knew that before we booked, cleaned every day and no problem at allThe pools were lovely and very inviting, the swim up bar was efficient and well stocked and staff were very friendly, lots of sunbeds so no problem getting one but you may miss out on the prime positions which annoyed me a bit as people were leaving towels on the chairs reserving them. The food was really nice and plentiful and a massive variation and could not knock it. The entertainment was a bit hit and miss some of the shows were naff others was quite entertaining. As most of the guest were British and American please cater more for that need like quality music bands. The beach was amazing and stunning although not on the hotel site a short walk across a road and down a lane gets you there quite quickly. Thomsons day trips were quite dear so get a bargain down the road.£50.00 tax per head to leave Mexico is a rip off and unfair tax and would prevent me going back there which is a shame as the resort is really good and would highly recommend this hotel to everyone. As a RUi customer you can use surrounding RUI hotels and there on beach facility's

Average Resort, Great Service (mostly)

So.......Stayed here from 6-2-17 to 6-9-17. The resort is well kept, but tired and outdated. 90% of the guests are European, we liked this because it gave us the ability to talk with people from many different backgrounds. The food is GREAT! The service in the restaurants is good. Be advised....for breakfast you will probably have to get your own water, coffee, etc. The staff is excellent, helpful and courteous, but they don't bring you water or coffee at the buffet. One morning I was alerted by the person that cleaned the room that I had left the safe open. THANK YOU for being honest! Not a single dollar was taken. The pool is OK, but you are not allowed to smoke next to the pool, or eat dinner next to the pool?! This was a little strange. You are on vacation (Holiday) it would be nice to leave the rules behind. Also, there is a film of nastiness floating on the surface of the pool.BE ADVISED - if you have other friends going, do not think you can book them at the Riu Lupita to save money, then just meet up with them everyday. The Tequila has access to the Playacar and Yucatan, and visa-versa. But the Lupita is an island unto itself. We made the mistake of buying a package to the Lupita for a friend during the same time since we looked at an older review that said that Lupita guests could use other facilities. This is not the case. And no one is going to help you change your reservations. We talked with Priceline, and Riu. No-one could do anything for us. I ended up spending an extra $700 for my friend to stay at the Tequila while his room sat unused at the Lupita for 5 days. Riu's inability to do anything for us really soured me to this company. Probably the last time I will stay at any Riu resort.I am a huge Karaoke nerd. One of the nights (I don't remember which one) they had Karaoke. I member of the Entertainment staff came aound asking if anyone wanted to sing. I of course volunteered, being a complete ham. I picked a song from the list they provided me and gave my name to them. Then I waited, and waited. Until the announcer said that the last song of the night was next. By this time I'm getting amp'd up about singing in front of a large crowd. But much to my surprise, they didn't call me? I went to the DJ and asked what the issue was. He said that they didn't have the song I put in for (the song I picked from their list they gave me?????). So I had some words with the Entertainment Manager about this, he said he was sorry. Evidently not sorry enough to ask me if I wanted to pick another song. I realize that to some of you who do not care for Karaoke, this seems self indulgent and petty. But to someone who was looking forward to singing Karaoke on vacation in Mexico, it was a big letdown. If your restaurants don't have food specified on the Menu, take it our of the menu. Like wise, if you are going to ask people to sing Karaoke, pass around a list of songs to pick from, have the song, or take it off the list. Rant over. The Disco was OK. The service was once again very good. The bartenders were quick and courteous. The music...Latin dance and 80-90s hip-hop. Allot of drunk kids trying to cause trouble. Smoking on the dance floor, we witnessed 1 fight while there.Overall, an OK vacation. My thanks to all the staff for excellent service. The property is nice, but outdated.

1St time and absolutely amazing

Loved this hotel so much, it's still in the old Mexican style and authentic which adds to the attraction for me. Food staff and location absolutely incredible. As an added bonus with Riu Hotels you can use the facilities at all the other hotels, except the palace ones which require a gold band (ours being a red band).Would definitely return beaches and ocean amazing, never had a day around the pool.Truly fabulous.

Excellent Choice

This was our second trip to the Riu Tequila and it was an enjoyable experience again. The Hotel is clean the housekeeping staff and groundsmen work very hard constantly to keep the Hotel clean and tidy. The restaurant staff are very attentive and remember your preferences if you sit in the same area. Yes the Hotel has not changed much in 10 years but unlike some other reviews it does not feel dated and yes because of the size I would imagine it is like painting the Forth Bridge keeping it looking fresh but I think they do a fine job. If you want modern boutique style stay in the Riu Playacar or the Yucatan but I can guarantee you will be wanting to come over to the tequila for the night time as we were told that the other 2 are very quiet at night, and we felt no need whatsoever to use the facilities in the other 2 Hotels which are part of the package. The food is amazing, the staff are amazing and the holiday experience is fabulous. We could fully understand why many people return here time after time. You are made to feel very special as a returning guest and if you have something to celebrate. We were there for our 10th Wedding Anniversary as this was our Honeymoon Hotel, the room was decorated for us on arrival and we had 2 nights booked in to the Steakhouse one as a returning customer and one for our Anniversary and the food was wonderful, but even the normal menu looked delicious so this is well recommended. We are not beach people so did not go there only to take a look but I am assured it is wonderful down there. Our flight home was delayed but they never attempted to prevent us from using the full facilities after check out which from past experience in other all inclusives is not always the case. I would like to say 2 special thank yous one to the Animation Staff for the shows and the daytime activities and a particular thank you to the Aqua Fit boys David if you wanted a quiet workout, Ricky if you wanted to work harder and to the absolutely adorable Marco who made every session funny, energising and just what I needed on Holiday to counteract all of the lovely food and drink and lounging around relaxing. You can eat and drink 24 hours in this resort if you wanted to and my final huge thank you was to the bar staff at the Pavillion Bar where we sat every night particularly Victor, Juan. Luis, Silvero, Ramiro, Felix, Rosie, the wonderful David who has been there for over 10 years and the daddy of them all Jose who looked after us whenever he was on duty with the personal touch of always noticing when our drinks were nearly empty and refilling them without asking, these guys really made our holiday they are entertaining enough on their own and work extremely hard during the night never stopping till the bar closed and always with a smile and a willingness to mix your drink just how you like it. Anyone who has said anything different about this bar has not sat at the bar and spoken to them and a few guests are just plain rude since thank you costs nothing to say. I have to say I had hoped the hotel would be similar after 10 years and that we would enjoy it as much as on our Honeymoon but I was more than happy with the holiday and hope the Tequila stays the same. We try to go to different places but I have to say when my husband said we would return every 5 years I was over the moon and like the people that return time and time again I am looking forward to our next visit. Don't listen to the bad reviews experience the Hotel yourself, it is not perfect, the weather is tropical so it sometimes rains, things break or do not work properly with over use, you might not get served straight away because the staff are busy, but I can guarantee that you will enjoy the experience and if you ask for something politely you will get everything you need, you will never be hungry and you will definitely never be thirsty. Tipping the staff is appreciated as they do not get paid big wages and politeness and patience is free to give. I hope this review helps and that if you have booked you will have a fabulous holiday just like we did.
