Our Opinion

The first Riu Resort to be built in Mexico, the Riu Yucatan had an extensive $20 million renovation in 2013. A great choice for families or couples, families will enjoy the wonderful kids club and couples will like the relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. Walking distance to town means you are not too far from the shops of Playa del Carmen's 5th Avenue. Good food and services. Recommended for a great all inclusive vacations. If you want even more pampering and luxury facilities try the Riu Palace Riviera Maya.

Fantastic hotel and staff

Stayed at yucatan for two weeks end June/July and can't praise this hotel enough! Problem free check in with very welcome welcome cold drinks. Allocated a room with balcony looking directly on to resident howler monkeys (early morning wake up call provided by monkeys didn't bother us at all). Cases delivered very promptly to our spacious, clean and well equipped room - optics included for gin, whisky, vodka and tequila as well as fridge stocked with water, beer and mixers.Headed to lovely, clean pool area - plenty beds available. Also used the beach lots of days again no problem getting a sun bed.Buffet restaurant offered excellent choices for breakfast and dinner. Visited Italian, steak and chinese, all really good and nice for a change. The only eating place I personally wasn't keen on was the place beside the pool that hosted lunch - although plenty choices was a bit like a cattle market - guests fault not hotels. We often walked along the beach to sister hotel Playacar for lunch and it was worth the walk, really lovely food served in a well set out restaurant.Staff at the Yucatan hotel is its biggest asset, not a single negative, everyone from cleaners, gardeners, bar staff, waiters etc all lovely and so hard working. Entertainment provided by the team was great fun. We joined in with the games at the beach every day and went to the shows at night. Before dinner there was entertainment provided in main bar, live music and various games - Mickey and Minnie Mouse even put in an appearance for the kids. Overall fantastic team who work their socks off all day and all evening - special thanks to Hosa, Josef and Anthony (and Alfonso from the bar) you made us feel very special.Nothing to fault on this hotel, go ahead and book you won't be disappointed!

Will definitely return!

Just back from a fantastic 11 night stay in Riu yucatan with my husband and two teenagers and will definitely return! The highlights...... the picturesque beach, fantastic staff, great atmosphere and well kept premises. Our rooms in block 8 were very private and not overlooked, I liked this location though it was away from beach and pools as it was tranquil at night. I was initially disappointed with the decor as I felt it wasn't as fresh as the rest of the hotel and would benefit from a repaint but this was quickly forgotten when we unpacked and realised the space inside and on the balcony and the highly effective air conditioning was a major plus in the searing heat. The beds were huge and very comfortable, plenty of towels and a well stocked minibar. Yolanda who cleaned our rooms daily was outstanding leaving lovely towel animals daily with fresh linen and spotlessly clean.Food was fantastic at the hotel both in the buffet and in the restaurants, the Mexican was the only one that required a booking while we were there however as the holiday went on it got busier and there were queues for the stakehouse which resulted in us going to the buffet instead, we were flexible but it would have been disappointing if we had our heart set on it so I think there should be an option to book 50% of the tables and leave the rest to walk ins. The Italian was the only one that disappointed not in terms of food quality but in organisation, the evening we went was chaotic, no one explained the format or gave us a menu resulting in our sons filling up on the buffet and not ordering main courses from the menu, our drinks didn't arrive either so we left after the main course- on that evening there appeared to be insufficient staff there and a big demand for tables, we didn't try it again but heard great reports from other travellers in the resort. The entertainment team are great and made every effort to get you involved in activities, special mention to Joseph who remembered our names and always had a welcoming greeting for us, I admired the determination of the Zumba instructor in getting so many to partake in the afternoon heat though I didn't myself! The evening entertainment was a bit mixed and probably would benefit from more professional acts but everyonegave it their full energy. The beach team were great clearing seaweed, little for most of the holiday until the second last day when a storm at sea washed a lot in, I hope its gone now as our pleasure in enjoying the crystal clear water and powder white sand was a major factor in our holiday experience. They always managed to locate sun loungers for guests at all times of the day as well. Unfortunately many guests still get up at the dawn to reserve beds that they hardly use through the day. We stayed away from the pools though my sons preferred it there as there was lots of activities going on. The swim up pool bar is a bit small as certain guests stay in there all day getting progressively louder which is off putting for others, a pity. The real attraction here is the beach. The resort itself felt very safe and playa del carmen is a walk of 30 mins by beach or road though we did get a taxi back. It's a great location with loads to see and do there and plenty of bars/restaurants if you fancy a change. We went on two trips booked via Thomson which were very expensive - 1100 dollars for three adults and one child. One was outstanding and great value, the other was a little disappointing though we enjoyed it. There is a huge range of things to see here historical, nature and adventure- something for everyone. It would be a shame to go all the way to Mexico and not experience the country, we have loads more to see and do here though next time we will book locally for better value. Finally can I suggest that the hotel does something to help teenagers connect particularly older teens who are too cool to approach people unlike younger kids. My son would have loved to have met some guys to hang out with and there were many his age with their parents also spending time on devices....some forum for them to get together would be brilliant as happy kids make the parents holiday a very happy experience! Resorts in Europe often offer activities tailored for that age group and once they mingle you hardly see them for the rest of the trip. Finally sorry this is so long, to summarise we had a great holiday and even my sons ear infection which necessitated a visit to the excellent medical centre in playcar didn't spoil it. The resort overall is fantastic and the few things I mention are minor and outlined to help you. I am looking forward to returning again very soon and a big thank you to your staff who made this experience wonderful. See you again and Slan.

Nice friendly hotel

Arrived as a family party of 8 (45/45/44/43/22/22/19/17)some family members had been 2 times before so recommended it, check in was fine and I had emailed before hand to see if we could be close together which we were. We were in block one so in between both pools. People said you didn't need to be early for a bed I consider 6.15 early!!! I'm an early riser so didn't bother me but lots of beds were taken and no one would be on them till 11 sometimes. The chill pool always had beds but it was so warm around there and the pool was filthy even though the pools were cleaned all day longDidn't do breakfast much but there was plenty of variety same at lunch, the steak place was lovely but had a waiting time our last night they told us 40 mins but it was over 90 and service this night was shocking only offered water once we didn't rate the Mexican at all and beside you have to be up before 7 am the day you want to go to be able to book it Italian and Asian we okStaff and entertainers were amazing can't do enough for you pool party was ace We did got to the other rius and spent time in the tequila sports bar as it's the only place that had air con all the others bars were open and it was really humid especially on a night it had pool tables live sports on many tv screens air hockey etc and was open 24hour plus they have a night club 5th avenue is a nice place to go for a stroll only 4.00 in a taxi some nice shops and bars we did coco bongos bought tickets from the guy round the pool he was ace having been to cancun before I was open to change but I preferred cancun the beach was cleaner and it wasn't as humid Mexico is amazing and will be booking again very soonAll in all a great family holiday would recommend but not sure why people return time after time when there are a lot nicer hotels out there

Perfect Honeymoon

Stayed here with my wife for our honeymoon. What can I say? It was beautiful the sandy white beach and crystal ocean. The entertainment team were friendly especially Pepe, Anthony and Alonzo. The food is average not quite five star and a bit bland but I'm picky and you can't say there isn't plenty to choose from. The pools are great again plenty to choose from. The TUI staff (Craig) were great and we swam with dolphins which was great and an Overall a fantastic holiday destination. Would 100% recommend and would stay again.

Great first time at an all inclusive

Our first time at an all inclusive and my 7 year old absolutely loved it! Food is fantastic in all restaurants and the staff are super, always willing to help and always with a smile. The pools are fantastic and the beach stunning, well apart from all the seaweed that washed up after a storm but the staff did their best to try and minimise this.
