Nice resort, great staff, strange rules

We decided to spend a week over new years eve in Mexiko and since we are a big fan of the Riu-Chain we decided on going to this resort. Overall I must say that we enjoyed it, there were just some minor issues that we found somewhat strange.- rooms: we had a very nice room in the block number 4 and I must say that off all blocks I think this is the best situated on: Very close to the beach and beach restaurant (so you can quickly pop to your room while having lunch, in and out in 5 minutes), but also quite close to the reception. Rom was very spacious, well cleaned and in good maintenance. Just one thing we did not like: In the room there was a cabinet with 2 bottles of Tequila, 1 bottle of rum and 1 bottle of Vodka - the kind of bottles where you just hold your glass under it and you get your poison. Our kid is old enough not to take any of this, but what happens if you have a 5-year old that says "Hmm, that looks like a nice lemonade, let me try it"- beach: Very nice, very spacious, a lot of beach chairs, we loved it. Also great for hiking, if you go north it only takes you 30 minutes to be in Playa del Carmen, if you walk south, it only takes you 10 minutes to be in the wilderness.- food: Ok, nothing special (apart from the breakfast ,which is to die for - what a great choice, with a special mexican corner, fresh juices, fresh omelettes,...). Lunch was usually in the beach restaurant with not too much variation, Dinner had different themes, but the variation also was limited. One big exception: The New Years Eve dinner - that was nothing short of fantastic, incredible choices, great food. They have speciality restaurants, where you do not have to reserve (apart from the mexican), the food there is good, not great (one simple example: We went to the steak restaurant and my kid had a burger. The burger itself had a great patty, but we had no gerkhins, no mustard, not tomato etc; might have been possible that that stuff was at the salad bar, but this is something that I expect on my plate when I order a burger.- staff: Very helpful, very passionate. They all really tried to help and support us as much as they can. Best of the best: Jonathan - he is always in a good mood and he always has helpful hints. We decided to do a small excursion on our own and he gave us such great tips. He is fantastic. So why only three stars? Up to the last day I would have given it 4 stars, but when we checked out, we found out that the hotel has really strange rules. On one hand their locker room is around the corner, unsupervised and unlocked, so when we left our luggage to go back on the beach we just had to hope that no one would sneak in and steal our valuables. On the other hand, when i wanted to have some towels for the beach, they told us that, since we had already checked out, I would only get towels if I leave my passport behind. I found that dichotomy very strange: It is ok if my luggage with my valuables is unsupervised, but the hotel is worried i might steal their towels, 10 $ a piece. Weird.Alltogether we are happy we selected that hotel, just those last quirks somewhat spoiled the mood

Brilliant holiday!

This was our first visit to Mexico and we were not disappointed! We received a very warm welcome from the minute we got off the plane to the minute we arrived at the hotel where we were greeted by a very friendly receptionist. The hotel is situated in a gated community amongst a number of other hotels, many of which are also 'Riu' hotels. We were informed that using our all inclusive wrist band, we would be free to enjoy the facilities in any of the other surrounding Riu hotels. The hotel's decor was very modern and was completely spotless. The buildings were situated amongst beautiful tropical trees which housed lots of monkeys which were always roaming around freely. There are plenty of pools, all clean but could do with being a few degrees cooler. The room was bright and clean with strong air conditioning. All of the housekeeping staff were incredibly efficient. We were provided with fresh towels and sheets daily and the fridge was restocked with soft drinks and beers every other day. Strangely, the room was completely open plan, this meant that the bathroom was completely open to the bedroom. This wouldn't have been a problem had it not been for the shower which had a glass door and no shower curtain. As a group of three friends this was not appropriate, so for the first night we covered the shower door with a beach towel. The housekeeper did provide a shower curtain the next day which was thrown over the shower door. All in all, showering was a bit awkward but not a major problem. One thing we did notice was the smell of sewage which would often come up from the drain and toilets. The food at the Riu Yucatan was average. Plenty of choice in the continental buffet restaurant and a number of other restaurants to choose from in the hotel also. For lunch, there was a barbecue on the beach, this was lovely. Entertainment was great most nights and the bar's all served a variety of delicious cocktails. All in all our stay was brilliant. The staff made us feel so welcome and are a credit to the hotel.

Good resort, phenomenal staff!

We came to Riu Yucatan for our honeymoon and we found the resort itself to be nice, but the service and staff was what really impressed us. A big shoutout out to Julio & ChaCha for doing an outstanding job in ensuring we had a great stay. Here is what we liked and didn't like about Riu Yuctan:PROS:- Staff; everyone that worked there was so kind and friendly. The wait staff were so attentive and made sure you had everything you needed.- Food; the hacienda buffet for breakfast and dinner was fantastic and had so much variety to choose from. There's tons of places to sit and always someone to fill your glass and take your plate. Quality of a la crates were great too!- Beach; you can't beat the beach on paseo Xamen-ha. It's white sand and turquoise water is what brings us back to the area- Access to other Riu's; I like that you have access to go to Riu Tequila or Riu Playacar- Proximity to Playa Del Carmen; you can get to all the action with 90 pesos, it's very close to all the amazing restaurants and bars in PDC- In Room Liquor dispenser; thought this was pretty cool and was great for having drinks before going out- Live music in lobby; I loved that they had singers and saxophone players in the main lobby on a few nights, was a really good vibe- Transfers; the Nexus shuttle drivers were amazing. On the way to the hotel my husband left his phone in the car, and with the help of Ulleses from the front desk the driver Manuel turned around and returned my husbands phone within 20 mins.- Wildlife; having monkeys around and hearing the different wildlife was so amazing and really added to the atmosphereCONS:- Wifi; There is no free wifi in the rooms and you can only access wifi on 2 devices per room. If you want to get wifi in your room, you have to pay for it. I find this ridiculous for a 5 star resort. - No Room Service; there is no room service at this hotel therefore between 10pm and 7am, you have no quality food to eat on the resort. They have an after hours snack bar that really only has refrigerated hot dogs and hamburgers that you have to microwave, and are pretty terrible.- Limited options at A la cartes; the quality of the food is great but there are very little choices to choose from - Housekeeping; we told the front desk that we were there for our honeymoon and they said that they would put something nice in our room. Nothing was done so after a couple days I went back and they said they would take care of it. We only received something on the 5th day we were there. The maid didn't always clean our room even though we had a sign up to do so, and when we ran out of water we were told to get it from the lobby as they had no one to send it up to us.- Beds/pillows; not very comfortable and low quality for a 5 star resort- Beach entertainment; not a lot is going on in the beach and isn't as lively as the pool area- Atmosphere at restaurants; i was surprised to see that the two a la carte restaurants (Mexican and steakhouse) are basically sectioned off areas of the lunch buffet/cafeteria. It would be nice to see some decor to make you feel like you're actually eating at a restaurant.- Reservation at Mexican restaurant; for some reason the only restaurant you have to make a reservation for is at the Mexican place, and you can only do so between 7-10am that same day. They should make this more accessible or have a bigger window to make a reservation.Overall I liked Riu Yucatan but expected more from a 5 star resort and for the price we paid. If they had less restrictions/policies, it would be a lot more enjoyable.

First time in Mexico and certainly won't be the last!!We were a group of 8 travelling to the Riu Yucatan for two weeks and left for Mexico just after Christmas. On arrival I was blown away by the entrance and lobby, just amazing.Speedy check in and we went to our rooms. We were in Block 7 which is located to the front of the hotel. All accommodation is set away from the lobby and bar that also houses the buffet restaurant for breakfast and dinner as well as the Italian and Asian restaurants. Our room was 7324 and we had a garden view that also overlooked the walkway provided for guests staying at the Riu Tequila across the road to access the beach. Our room was lovely. Ok they are a little bit tired but clean, spacious and comfortable. The rooms are open plan so you can see into the bathroom. The toilet is separate and next to the shower. Unless you are physically going stand near the bathroom entrance and watch someone showering, it really isn't an issue. The fridge is located in the bathroom and gets restocked every other day with water, beer, soda water, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi and 7up.The optics are above the fridge and ours contained gin, vodka, tequila and brandy. Whilst not 'top shelf' spirits they are more than drinkable. The location of the hotel itself is great. You have the beautiful beach on your doorstep and can see for miles.A few times we walked along the beach towards the Cozumel ferry terminal which then winds into Playa Del Carmen. You can also walk outside the hotel at the front, turn right and head into Playa that way, as well as pass the Tequila and Playacar hotels which you are free to use. The hotels ask that you only use their restaurants for lunch. We did visit the Tequila on one day to go to the sports bar so can't comment on the lunchtime food.Apart from a few excursions we felt no reason to leave the hotel, it had everything you need and more. The main buffet restaurant served breakfast and dinner whilst we were there and lunch is served in a buffet restaurant adjacent to the two pools by the beach.Food is in abundance and cannot be faulted. There are various cooking stations to choose from and I for one never got bored.Breakfast - oh my good! Stations serving pancakes, pastries, eggs cooked how you want, made to order omelettes, crispy bacon, baked beans, hash browns, sausages, fruit, cereal, porridge, juices, meats, you name it, it is all there.Lunch - again amazing. The buffet restaurant down by beach has an amazing selection for lunch. Soups, salads, pizzas, chicken, fish, burgers, chips, paella, even steak on some days. Desserts are plentiful and there's also ice cream as well. You can help yourself to beer and soft drinks in this restaurant. We also experienced an outdoor BBQ for lunch everyday, which was amazing. How the chefs manage to cook outside in the heat is beyond me. Burgers, hot dogs, chicken, steaks, chips, salad and fresh fruit for dessert.A warning - do not leave food behind if you eat outdoors or the gulls will be down on you in a flash! There are two outdoor bars available by the pool which start serving at 10:30am. Every single drink you can think of is included. I tried most of the cocktails and all were delicious. For the evening meal you have a choice of the main buffet restaurant in the lobby or the Italian, Asian, Steakhouse or Mexican restaurant. The only restaurant that requires booking is the Steakhouse. We ate at the Asian, Italian and Mexican but found the buffet restaurant to be more than adequate. Food selection is outstanding with variations each day. If your food isn't hot by the time you get back to your table then you've obviously been wandering around looking at all the other food on offer for too long!!!The staff here are impeccable and cannot do enough for you. We heard that they earn the equivalent of a McDonalds Meal each day but that doesn't make them downcast. Always smiling and on hand to refill your wine or water glass. We spent most days lazing by the pools by the beach. The towel station doesn't open until 8:30am and we never had a problem finding sun beds. There is also a chill out pool located near the lobby that is more relaxed and has a mini beach area with hammocks and cabanas.Weather was fabulous for us despite a couple of downpours in the afternoon. The entertainment team are fab and there's always a fun game to be played round or in the pool. There's also yoga on the beach each morning as well as beach volleyball during the day.The beach and see are lovely and whilst the beach doesn't have a dedicated bar it's only a few steps up to the pool bar for drinks.I cannot recommend this hotel enough. Having been on many European holidays to hotels which I thought were good, the Riu Yucatan has reset my expectations!!!

Toooo loud

To start with: very friendly staff from reception to catering to housekeeping. Buildings are situated in nice tropical garden. But for the rest we were disappointed by the quality of our stay. The bed rooms are in need of updating. Beds are aweful. The food is reasonably nice presented, but lacked quality, taste and diversity. The music around the main pool area was too loud and going on all day and all evening. Bar areas were OK but nothing special. This is a place for family and friends but not for relaxation and a bit of luxury. In that case go for the 'quiet pool' away from the beach. There it is a little bit better, depening on the crowds. We like a lively yet elegant place, and this resort did not deliver. We would not go back here.
