The first Riu Resort to be built in Mexico, the Riu Yucatan had an extensive $20 million renovation in 2013. Fantastic Honeymoon

Me and my husband spent our honeymoon in this hotel for 11 nights. The staff were amazing, they were helpful and friendly, the hotel is modern and very clean. There is so much choice on the buffets and I recommend eating in the steak house as the food was really nice. The beach is lovely too and so close to the hotel, the swimming pools were pretty cold but warmed up after a while of being in them. The entertainment throughout the day was good too, my self and my husband had a laugh watching the funny entertainment around the pool and in the evening. The drinks are filled up ever other day in the hotel and the towels everyday, our cleaner would make towel animals for us everyday which were amazing. Sometimes we saw monkeys in the trees outside our room and loved listening and seeing the birds and small animals around the hotel.Overall we had an amazing time!

Lovely hotel with a superb beach

My wife & I stayed here to celebrate our 50ths.I would first like to thank the hard working staff at the hotel,Nothing was to much for them & all polite & helpful-They are all a credit to the hotel.Check in was quick & very well organised. Our room was clean/tidy & was perfect for our needs. The pool area had an abundance of sun beds & we never struggled to get two.The beach is out of this world ,Many a time my wife & I sat on the beach early morning & watched the sunrise. We enjoyed all the meals we had there & could not fault the choice.Something for everyone. The hotel reception bar area was a busy area at night with various forms of entertainment,Casino night was a favourite & was enjoyed by all. They also had singers on & the staff encouraged all persons to get involved dancing. We never found a problem with the drinks at the bar-Spoilt for choice. One thing I will say is the staff all had hand sanitizer at various areas around the hotel.I witnesssed individuals leave toilets without washing there hands & then refuse the sanitizer.People even refused sanitizer at the restaurant entrances,Some people’s hygiene left a lot to be desired. The staff also decorated our room for both our birthdays-Nice touch. My wife & I thoroughly enjoyed our two week stay in December & have decided to book again which we have done today.I will end my review thanking all the staff at the Riu Yucutan-You are a credit to the hotel & deserve all the praise you receive -Well Done.Ps-If you like a cup of tea in the morning take a travel kettle with you.If anybody has any questions please feel free to ask.Regards Daz

Great stay

If you want to completely feel relaxed without worrying about anything this is the place. Very relaxing resort with not too many wild activities happening. Very family oriented, children of all ages should feel great here. We went with family and it was amazing. The service they provided was awesome, the food is good. The rooms are okay, could use some updating but whatever, the balcony makes up for it. Im more of a pool person but the beach there was so nice and clean that i forgot the pool and spent time by the beach my entire stay. Overall, no complains. I will be back if i want 100% relaxation but if you want little bit of action maybe try Riu Cancun.

  • AnywaysGuys :
Great family resort right on a beautiful white sand beach with plenty of entertainment.

We stayed at the Riu Yucatan from December 22, 2017 - January 02, 2018This resort offers a great family all-inclusive experience in Playa Del Carmen. Check-in was easy and we stayed in a standard room about halfway between the main lobby and the beach. The resort is extremely clean and the staff work very hard to keep it that way. They were always friendly but at the same time respected your privacy. Whenever we asked for room service they did a great job and even left us towels folded in animal shapes while restocking our fridge with beer, water and soda. The resort is big enough so that it doesn't feel overcrowded but you never have to walk more than a couple minutes to get anywhere. The beach was beautiful with palm trees and smooth sand. There were no rocks anywhere so you didn't need water shoes. The water was clear and the waves were large enough to enjoy without presenting any danger to small children. The food was pretty good for an all-inclusive. I am sure foodies might be a little disappointed but then again they probably shouldn't be staying at an AI. The buffets tended to get a little busy at times and sometimes others would forget that they weren't the only ones staying at the resort :-) But sit-down restaurants provided a nice experience. I highly recommend making reservations at the Mexican Restaurant since the food is great and you eat outside near the beach. The room itself wasn't anything special but comfortable and clean. Some people complain about the bathrooms as they don't have doors but if you are traveling with a family this is not an issue (the toilet is in a separate room with a door). It had a nice balcony and our daughter loved watching the sereques play in the garden area.Highlights* The kids club was a life-saver. Our 8 year old daughter would beg us every morning to take her there. We can't thank Rosalia, who operated the club, enough for going all out and making our daughter's vacation special. Rosalia would hug her every time she saw her and she treated her like her own daughter. It was great seeing our daughter make friends with kids from other countries.* The Yucatan has an outdoor stage and held a kids disco every evening followed by an adult show. Sipping a coconut mojito while watching the mariachi band was very enjoyable.* The bars were great. The menu offers plenty of types of drinks but the bartenders were happy to make custom drinks. The alcohol did not taste cheap at all, which is sometimes typical of AI's.* That beach. One of the best that I have been to. Large enough to not feel too overcrowded even on busy days. You have a nice view of Cozumel as well.* The resort went all out for New Year's Eve. There were ice sculptures and employees with costumes everywhere. The buffet dinner had just about everything and champagne was served. Il Divo performed early in the evening and they were spectacular, and a DJ kept the crowd dancing to all hours. They also passed out noise makers, balloons, and hats. Tips* Get to the beach early and then take turns grabbing breakfast. Don't just leave your towels on the loungers as it is not only rude but not allowed. And some people may just pick up your towels and toss them aside (we actually witnessed an attempt at this). * If you don't get into the Mexican restaurant, eat at the Steak house right next to it. You still get a nice sit-down meal next to the beach and don't need reservations (it is first come first served). * Order your mojitos with coconut rum. They make them the old-fashioned way with real mint and a muddler. Yum. * Eat lunch at Riu Tequila. It is a short walk and the buffet was way less crowded and much more enjoyable. We were told that people staying there often go to Yucatan for lunch so they can go to the beach (Tequila does not have a beach on the resort but guests can cross the street and access the beach area at Yucatan). ConclusionThere are plenty of resorts in the area but if you are traveling with a family this is one of the best places to stay. Super clean, great beach and the wild life reminds you that you are near the jungle.

Great hotel, on a lovely beach

We stayed here May 2017 - and had a great time.Hotel was lovely, and rooms were nicely spaced out - quiet a small resort, but a nice walk to the pool and beach - we had a room up by reception, which was handy in the mornings for breakfast and dinner! Food was great - nice selection all day - egg stations, cooked breakfast, and cereals, fruit and yoghurt options at breakfastLunch was at the pool bar - great selection of cold salads and bits - I dont like eating hot food in the daytime, when I am already hot from the sun! - so great for meDinner again was good - we didnt get to go to any of the Al a carte restaurants except for the asian (which seemed silly as there was an asian night most weeks) but from other guests, not worth booking for anyway - so we stuck to the buffet. - Sushi bar was a highlight for me!Pool was nice and clean - there was a pool foam party once a week which did muck the pool up for a day or two, but it was soon cleaned.there were 2 pools, we didnt use the smaller one near the lobby as it was very warm to sit out away from the sea breeze! - did have to get up early to get a job spot on the beach front - one day we were up early with jetlag and went for breakfast and at 6am, beds had been reserved! We get up early anyway, but always managed to get a spot if we came down by 9amRooms nice and big - strangely no door on the bathroom, but as a couple that didnt bother us. - might be strange if travelling with friends! Cleaners did a good job cleaning the rooms - no issues and we were topped up everyday with fresh water, cans of drink and beer - and a nice surprise to have some 'champagne' (it was sparkling wine) in the mini bar - which we enjoyed one evening! Overall a lovely hotel - and would come back if we came back to Mexico!
