Our Opinion

Great choice that has the makings and elements of a luxury hotel. Amazing food options and great service offered by all staff members. The music and noise level tends to run relatively high at times. Despite it getting relatively busy around the beach during the day, staff members have no problem accommodating guests with extra beach chairs.

Overview

The 'royal treatment' is not just a phrase - the signature service of the incredibly luxurious Royal Hideaway by Occidental is a place where service & style come together with complete, grand fashion. Very Relaxing. Quiet.

We stayed at the end of April, first week in May. Greeted nicely by staff with champagne and wash cloths while we registered. Maybe a bit much for us. The grounds are "mostly" gorgeous but the huge pond water feature in the middle of the property takes away from the beauty. It needs some serious work! Unattractive, concrete, no greenery and appears broken in places that have rocks covering large holes. The size of the grounds also means constant work by landscapers, so there is mowing and noise if that matters to people. We enjoyed the quiet pool areas which we had to ourselves some occasions, but there is no regular butler service to them, so stock up on drinks at those pools. A little disappointed in not knowing that the poolside seating is reserved, and difficult to get, so we spent most of our time on the beach. Beach space is beautiful! We had our choice of shade or sun, but the wait staff does not visit often enough. We loved Luis, though. When he worked, we were taken care of! The "Hideaway" is no longer that, however. This resort is stuffed between two very large resorts with noise and music from both sides. It is clearly a very old resort that they are working on updating, and there are definitely areas that show its age. Christian was another staff member who really took care of us and also in charge of entertainment. Poolside entertainment was appropriate and fun. The theater show was tons of fun and quite impressive really for what it is. Kinda of reminded me of a cruise ship theater show. Evening time was quite mellow, so if you are going to stay here to party, expect to be disappointed. We really enjoyed the singing entertainment outside one of the bars(Bar Allegra I think) one evening too. The food, excellent!!! Absolutely no complaints and our favorite restaurant was Azia. Really, really good food. The beef tenderloin at the Grill was as good as any filet mignon I have ever had! Least favorite, Las Ventanas. The food a little too off the wall for us. The rooms, were clean and fresh. Nice furnishings and incredibly comfortable beds. A drippy broken air conditioner was fixed within the day it was reported. The refrigerator really is virtually useless, but if you keep the cabinet door open and the fridge not too overstocked, it will chill the drinks that are provided. This could easily be solved with ventilation in that cabinet, lattice instead of a door maybe or just keep the refrigerators out of the cabinet altogether. Also, tipping does get you taken care of better, regardless of this being an all inclusive. Overall a very nice stay and quite relaxing. Hope this helps someone!

Ignore the Bad Reviews

We just returned home Tuesday night.Bad review: "you need reservations to eat at the restaurants". This is because their main goal is to offer a personalized dining experience. If your reservation happens to be later, eat breakfast and lunch a little later to accommodate. The restaurants are a foodies dream, the reservations are worth the time the waitstaff spends with you.Bad review: "there's no pool bar". That's because it's a classier resort and their intent is to keep rif raf out of the resort. The resort spares no expense, so they could've put one in during renovations. No partying, no yelling, no drunken urine in the pool water. All of the pools throughout are stunning and well-maintained, including the infinity pool.Bad review: "the water temperature fluctuates". It does, but if you wait a few minutes while adjusting the temp, it stays consistent.Bad review: "the refrigerator doesn't keep drinks, etc., cold". It doesn't, but if you use the upper top shelf where the cold air flows down, it keeps two cans of beer/soda ice cold.Bad review: "the breakfast and lunch buffet has deep fried food and "reminds me of Old Country Buffet" (I almost changed my mind and cancelled my reservation because of this comment) but that's absolutely not the case. The food is fresh- including 3 different types of ceviche while we were there. The catch of the day was awesome every time we ordered it.The staff overcompensate for kindness and can't do enough for you. If they see you doing something they can do for you instead, they run over to do it for you. Adrian, our butler, was awesome; the staff is awesome and professional and the grounds are continuously cleaned up and gardens being planted or pruned. We also discovered two-story Junior Suites with multiple balconies including one balcony with a jacuzzi. Next time if there are any available. The show "Ooh La La" at the dinner theater was amazing and so was the food. We did the dinner theater twice. We've stayed at several upscale AI resorts in Mexico, but this was our first stay at a smaller boutique hotel. The service is much more personalized and professional. The beach is the nicest beach we've ever seen at a resort in Mexico. The food at all of the restaurants was fabulous. We'll be back!

Wonderful stay at RH!!

We recently stayed 7 nights at RH and had such an amazing time! The resort is small and quiet and perfect for relaxing. The reception is comfy and they offer you sparkling wine or water when you arrive. Instead of sitting or standing at their desk. they invite you to sit in their couches and stuffed chairs which is great after traveling. The room is so very comfortable and nicely appointed. We had a very comfy king bed, sitting area with a desk and table and a beautiful bathroom with tub and separate shower. It had a walk in closet and a separate toilet room. It was always very cool inside the room which is a relief for the humid hot air outside. It had a nice patio with cushioned loungers and a little table. Our room was near one of the private little pools which was very nice. The restaurants/bars were all exceptional! The drinks were tasty and not watered down and the food was 5 star! So very tasty and beautifully plated. I didnt have anything I didnt like! The buffet for breakfast and lunch was always so good and upstairs was amazing as well. Our favorite restaurant was The Palazzo. Entertainment: This resort is made for relaxing in an upscale way. Dont expect to have loud music blasting by the pool or daily pool activites or rowdy noise. We are in the 30-35 crowd so we can have fun but also like to relax and have quiet. There was a nightly musician at Bar Allergo which was nice but was usually playing older music which even for us was a bit boring. The musicians were always very good but the song choice is for a much older crowd. Club Royal is ok. The food was tasty but the entertainment was a bit lack luster. The bartenders at Bar Allegro were great and pour some great drinks. Freddy was awesome!Genero at the pool bar was so great and always was bringing us new fun drinks to try.Angel at the excursions office was awesome and so patient with us. He suggested some great trips and we were really impressed by them! We took a tour to Chicheniza and the guide was just so knowledgeable and didnt make us do all the silly touristy things so we really felt like we were learning a lot about the Mayan history and culture. We learned a few phrases in Maya and used them on the resort since MOST of the people in the area are Mayan. Our concierge Alma was great and she really went above and beyond and helped make my brother-in-law and sister-in-law's 10th anniversary so special!! The beach was nice!! Bring tips for the staff because the deserve it!!!

Amazing resort!!!!

Phenomenal service!!! The beach was clean and gorgeous. Made you feel like you were the only ones staying at the resort. The restaurants were amazing. The rooms are spacious and very clean. I would recommend this resort to anyone going to playa del carmen.

The Royal is truly great!

My husband and I have stayed here on three separate vacations , for a luxury couples getaway this is it!Smaller resort, not as vast as many others, old world Mexican upscale hacienda resortThis hotel has one of the best spots if not the best spot on the Playa beach hotel stretch!NO rocks, NO crowds, great beach service(cocktails)!Food is very good, not perfect but good!Service is good, grounds perfect, very, lush with beautiful palms, lots of small pools around property that are basically empty to use.Infinity edge pool over looking ocean is wonderful!!No parties here, just couples spot!!! Romantic place!Top shelf cocktails, and good beer choices. The hotel has free bike rentals, short bike ride to Playa shopping. This is my favorite hotel in Playa for the price!! We have are very traveled stayed, at luxury resorts in Jumby Bay, Westin Cayman Islands, Vail, Disney so on, and so on! Enjoy a romantic vacation here.
