Our Opinion

Great choice that has the makings and elements of a luxury hotel. Amazing food options and great service offered by all staff members. The music and noise level tends to run relatively high at times. Despite it getting relatively busy around the beach during the day, staff members have no problem accommodating guests with extra beach chairs.

Our week at Royal Hideaway was exquisite from the time we were greeted by bellhop Bogar’s smiling, friendly face upon arrival until he waved us goodbye. The food was delicious, beautifully presented, and there was plenty of choice. The accommodations were luxurious, and the staff in all areas was charming and friendly. One great benefit was that while the gorgeous beach was right there, the town of Playa del Carmen was an easy half hour walk away. There are activities and nightly entertainment which, sadly, are not well advertised. Ask for a weekly schedule of events upon your arrival. Reservations are required for dinner, and you will be told to book with your concierge. However, if, like us, you are often away touring and unable to connect with your concierge, this can be frustrating. Therefore, we suggest booking your reservations either directly with the hotel staff upon checking in (although they won’t offer to do this for you) or, as we learned from another guest, by email in advance. The restaurants do not take reservations directly. If you want to sit on the balcony at Spices Restaurant, go early. However, we found that depending on the wind and sun, an indoor table was often preferable. Breakfast and lunch were more enjoyable and service was better at Spices than at The Grill. We would definitely return to Royal Hideaway in the future.

Goods and Bads

When we checked into our room, the ceiling fan blades were broken up which made it very noisy. This was important because the air conditioning wouldn't keep the room cool. The jacuzzi tub leaked into the room and outside onto the patio. After way too much complaining they moved us to a new room that was good. The dinner restaurants were good, there's only two restaurants open for breakfast and lunch and they are marginal, probably because they are overwhelmed. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The service around the pool is good but since they are using the bar at the over whelmed lunch restaurant it takes a while to get your drinks. If you're a diver the ProDive Mexico dive shop is AWESOME, great people and great diving.

Beautiful Resort on beach

We loved this resort-beautiful grounds, pools, beach, & great beach service! We enjoyed the variety of meals & entertainment. Always felt safe. Walked the beach to downtown. We enjoyed the Hibachi meal, Mediterranean, Italian, etc. Nice variety. This was a relaxing & fun stay!

Another fabulous week in paradise

This is our second time here and hopefully will continue to come back. We did aqua zumba and aerobics every day with a happy, fun and full of energy instructor, Yuliana Moreno. Also we were in bldg. 26 and our concierge was Fermin Castanade who couldn't do enough to help make our stay enjoyable and so pleasant. We would definitely request his bldg. again. The food presentation and flavor were beyond our expectations, just wonderful. I don't know how the staff does it but every meal, every day they couldn't be more pleasant. The rooms are spacious, clean and fully resupplied each day. It was a pleasure.

Raves for the Royal Hideaway

My husband and I just returned from a week at the Hideaway. I was reluctant to go to Mexico in January, mainly because I was afraid that the weather would not be hot enough for me. However, when my husband started talking about the Royal Hideaway, the trip was booked! I had heard and read many good things about this resort, and it did not disappoint. We spent the week feeling spoiled, having fun, and relaxing. You can't help it at the Royal. Everyone working there goes out of there way to make you feel special. Want 4 beach towels? No problem! Want dinner reservations? Your building concierge will make them for you. Forget to bring a comb? (Yes, I really did!), someone will bring you one. I loved not having to wear a wristband and not having a "towel card". I'm going to continue by breaking this review into categories. Room: We stayed on the 2nd floor in building 24. It was the building closest to the pools and the ocean. We had the most well-appointed room I've ever had at an all-inclusive. Nice, high ceilings with a ceiling fan, huge bathroom with jetted tub, and a big closet (with a safe) with big fluffy robes for us to use. Our room had plenty of plug-ins and storage drawers. Thank you to Graciela our building concierge. What a treasure you are! Pools and Ocean: The pools are great. Very clean. Difficult to get a seat by the infinity pool, but always found seats at the other main pool. I enjoyed the water aerobics. We didn't use the other small pools located around the property. They are really secluded and pretty, but the water in them was too cold for me. The beach is really beautiful. No problem finding seating in the shade. Restaurants: Loved them all, but I was personally limited by my "not very educated" palate. Mind you, there was always something on the menu that I really liked. I try to be adventurous in my menu choices, but I did find myself a time or two missing (dare I say it?) a buffet. I loved the meal at Azia (big shout out to our chef, Natanael!). I also loved the pepper soup at Spices. Our waiter, Fernando Marten, deserves kudos for his service and his kindness. Tea time at 4 everyday was such a nice touch. Entertainment: It was great having a show to go to every night. I liked all the shows, Vegas night was my favorite. What a voice the vocalist had! They have a really nice theater. Resort Grounds: Immaculate, beautiful garden setting. I can't believe I was a happy as I was in our room that did not have a view of the ocean. Also, the resort was the perfect size for us. I much prefer this smaller size because I feel like I am able to get to know the staff better, and they get to know me a little as well. Excursions: We did 3 half day excursions through Cancun Adventures (it was buy 2 get one free). The half day allowed us to have plenty of beach time. The trips were all great, but I'll review them elsewhere. We took a taxi into Playa del Carmen one cloudy afternoon. It doesn't cost very much and we knew that we would do plenty of walking once we got to town. We didn't have any problem with anyone being overly aggressive, just had to say no thank you, and keep walking. We enjoyed a drink called a Tropicool at a place called Tacos & Gin. There is shopping right across the street from the resort, a nice little area with plenty of shops if you didn't want to go into Playa. The Royal Hideaway is a top notch resort. The resort is beautiful, the pools are great and the beach is wonderful. The staff is fabulous. I know everyone says it, but I truly feel like they shine. I will not forget our time at the Royal Hideaway. We will return!
