Our Opinion

This is a great resort for couples looking for a romantic getaway. The property itself is incredible. Unlike other major resorts within the Riviera Maya strip, this one diverts away from the large style properties. All of the service staff are eager to please and are incredibly helpful and attentive. There are plenty of activities offered both during the day and night, so there is no shortage of things to do.

excellent service

The staff at the Royal are top notch from the bell-hops, housekeeping and waiters. Our waiter Israel was especially great to us and made sure we had everything we needed for a fabulous vacation. Thank you Israel for your hospitality.

Amazing Experience with Exceptional Service

We had an amazing experience at The Royal. The Poolside staff was fantastic. Special shout out to Marco, Jaime and Ruben. The took really good care of my husband who had an injured ankle. We had lunch at the Rincon almost everyday. The staff there again was fantastic and friendly. The food was outstanding! Special thanks to Juan Segura, Juan Carlos and Camara. The best breakfast place was Pelicano's. Every time we got in there we were warmly greeted and they brought a chair for my husband to put up his injured ankle. Thank you to Lucas, Rodolfo, Manuel, Edgar, Israel, Martin, Filipe and Amaya. The food prepared by Chef Rudi Fer was fantastic. Every night there was a show in the lobby. Elpidio served us most nights and after a few nights already knew which drinks we would want and would ask if he could bring us those drinks. I would very highly recommend this resort. We will be back.

Beautiful hotel! Real Club Membership needs a lesson in customer service.

I would like to end on a good note so I will start with the negatives. While you stay at this beautiful hotel you will be asked to go to a breakfast and presentation of all the wonderful things the hotel has to offer. You will be told that if you join the club resorts you will receive all of these wonderful benefits. You purchase nights/credits that you can use at the Royal/Hyatt Resorts, not weeks as they had previously done. The list is just endless.... We go to Mexico every year, what the heck, lets give it a shot. We chose The Royal as our first hotel to visit with our new exciting membership! I made numerous emails to the club to let them know it was my sister and brother in laws anniversary. Eight emails to be exact. Some never answered and some said they sent the request to someone else. Ok, as long as there are flowers in their room when we arrive! We were to receive free round trip transportation from the airport as members, another perk. On our arrival we are to receive private check in with the "CLUB". Awesome!! Let me tell you what we really did get.We arrive at the hotel and go to the members PRIVATE check in desk and get directed back to the front desk where everyone else was checking in. We are asked if we are celebrating anything. They should know by now , but I tell them again, yes an anniversary and it is today. (wink, wink) We finish checking in, we stopped at the lobby bar and go to our room. We have a bottle of wine with glasses, nice. I cant wait to see my brother and sister in laws room next door, they are going to be so surprised. I went over there when we unpacked to see how they had decorated their room.. NOTHING, NOT EVEN A BOTTLE OF WINE like ours. WOW, I thought, they really dropped the ball on this one. I was upset but not going to let it ruin my vacation. Other little things happened all through the week and I was really questioning our decision we made when we spent so much money on this membership. No private check in , no flowers, hmmm. The Club wants us to come review our benefits package the day before we leave. We tell them what has happened and they admit that is bad and say they will forward it to someone?? Then they proceed to try to get us to upgrade and spend more money. Really?? We readily declined that offer. That is when the attitude changed. We asked her for a pen to write notes while we were going over our benefits again and were told not to worry, she would email them to us. It has been 2 weeks and no email yet...At our departure, the complimentary round trip service we were to get, never showed up. We were supposed to be on the way to airport at 11:00am. They called and called, no one shows up. There is a hotel van that is parked in the driveway. Can we take that I ask? No, they said it will take too long to get permission. Really? At 12:00 we are told all six of us are going to be put in taxis. Ok, whatever it takes to gets me there. She then tells us WE HAVE TO PAY $100 FOR THE TAXI. I tell her that it supposed to be complimentary. She says, no, you have to pay. She says they will pay the money back when we complain to the Members Club. OMG SERIOUSLY. Ok we need to get to the airport so I get my credit card. No, she says you have pay cash! First of all it is our last day and we do not have $100 cash and I would never pay cash and try to get a refund. Cash ONLY they said. My brother in law (the same one who never got flowers for his anniversary) had an emergency fund (like guys do) in his wallet. Thank God. Were they just going to let us miss our flight if we didn't have $100 cash??? It sure looked that way. She said to email the taxi receipt to get a refund. We get home and I send a letter and the receipt in. We got an apology letter in return. An apology was not sufficient I said. We ended up getting a $100 credit at a hotel, not a refund, and a ONE way transportation to the next hotel. We also found out that even though you buy credits by the night, you have to use a weeks worth of nights even if you only stay 4 nights. If you stay 8 nights, you have to use 14 nights (2 weeks) of credits. Do not understand that at all. Bottom line is when you do not provide a service that was promised you need to fulfill that promise and beyond to keep satisfied customers. That being said, it is sad that this reflects on our hotel stay. The two businesses are separate but, work out of the same building.Enough negative, its over and done and I cant change it. The POSITIVE!! The hotel is beautiful. The staff are friendly and always smiling. Our room was very nice. German kept our room stocked with extra coffee and chips. He always asked if we needed anything EXTRA. Christy left our room immaculate everyday. The food is amazing in every restaurant. We caught a wahoo while fishing. The chef in Pelicanos ( I apologize, I cant remember his name) cooked it up to perfection for us! The pool activities were fun. The pool was big and clean. (Not heated though) A little chilly. You don't have to tip and a lot of people don't , but these people work amazingly hard and we always did. Any questions about anything feel free to message me

My Great Vacation

My husband and I had a fabulous time. We couldn't believe how wonderful the employees were. At the Maria Marie restaurant a special thank you to the manager Diego. The chef Pastor personally came to our table to discuss cooking options with my husband who has limitations to what he can eat. On the day we were leaving - we went to Spice for breakfast (went there everyday since the selection was wonderful and the service was wonderful. The gentleman who brings us coffee and orange juice (jorge) bought us a piece of cake with the words "have a great trip: written in chocolate. That was above and beyond the call of duty. We are definitely coming back and will recommend this hotel to all of our friends.

Good but not the best

We are still here and leaving tomorrow after a weeks stay. We have traveled all over the Caribbean and would say this is a good resort but most likely would not come back here.. We would rate Live Aqua and Hyatt Zilara in Cancun higher overall. Our room was a swim up "ocean view" room which we upgraded to. That was a mistake as to call it "Ocean View" is a stretch. The room was very nice but you can only see the ocean a little if you stand up, not what I would call an Ocean view. Also the Swim up pool is much smaller than most resorts we have stayed at. I would rate the room as excellent though, just wish we had not paid the extra. The main pool is nice, but far too small for the number of guest that are here. Also there are a number of large groups here that take over sections of the pool. I don't blame them, but just kind of annoying. Everyone puts towels on chairs at 8 am to make sure they get one. The restaurants are above average and I would rate them up there with most high end resorts....no complaints there. All of the staff are Excellent and they work hard to make sure you are taken care of. Being able to walk to 5th avenue was nice and we enjoyed our long walks through the streets. Also being able to jump on the ferry to Cozumel was nice. Again overall it was good but not great to us. Would recommend it to friends that want to come to Playa Del Carmen, but suspect we would not come again unless we got a ocean front room which they really don't have a lot of.
