This is a great resort for couples looking for a romantic getaway. The property itself is incredible. Unlike other major resorts within the Riviera Maya strip, this one diverts away from the large style properties. All of the service staff are eager to please and are incredible helpful and attentive. There are plenty of activities offered both during the day and night, so there isn't a shortage of things to do.
Location: Ideally located on Coco Beach, 45 min from the Cancun airport.
I will share my pros and cons of the resort honestly, but overall, our experience was great - a 4.5. We are an average couple who traveled for a long weekend getaway, and I think the following points will relate to most.Cons - I wish I would have known the following things before traveling: * Many rooms are not ocean-facing, and upgrades are outrageous.* The hair dryer in the room was awful. I love traveling and getting dressed up when I am staying somewhere nice, and I thought there would be a nice hair dryer for the amount we spent to stay there. It was the same type of dryer many 2 star hotels provide (see photo). It sucked a bunch of my hair in through the back and I didn't get it all back... I suggest you find some extra space in your luggage to bring your own.* The bath towels were not soft at all, especially on tender, sunned skin.* The sheets in our "junior suite" seemed old and worn - there was a lot of pilling (tiny little balls you could pick off).* The beach was beautiful, but if you walk in the water 10 feet, you hit lot of large rocks. This prevented us from swimming, which is one of our favorite things to do when we go to the beach.* Walking through the lobby means you'll be approached with 50 different sales offers. The Pros -* The food!!! Literally some of the best we've ever had. The Coffee House was great for iced lattes, Spice had a very large breakfast buffet, and Asiana was our favorite for dinner (the sprimp green curry is to die for). For lunch, visit Miguel at the outdoor bar by Pelicanos. He is incredibly friendly and attentive. While you're there, have the tacos from the walk-up window. They're amazing! Pelicanos was great for dinner too, but the night we ate there, it was very windy. There were also MANY stray(?) cats roaming the restaurant area for food. We didn't have Chef's Plate, but we ate everywhere else, and it was all delicious. * The events planned were pretty good. Decent turnout for the daily dance lessons by the pool, and everyone seemed to enjoy watching, even if they weren't participating. We attended each "tasting" they had while we were there - wine, tequila, and martinis. Each lasted 30 minutes, and we learned a lot. The one thing I'll say about the nightly shows in the lobby is that sometimes we felt like they were trying too hard to appeal to American tourists. They *tried* to play/sing songs like "Sweet Home Alabama," and we found ourselves wanting to hear more native music, like salsa. I think we would have had a much better impression of the musicians if they had played something they enjoyed and were good at. * The service everywhere was exceptional, from the waiters, to the cocktail servers by the pool. We brought $100 in single bills to tip - they were worth it! Even the receptionists were great. Eduardo worked at a desk near Pelicanos, and he answered a lot of logistical questions we had. Most of the housekeepers speak little or no English. * I visted the spa twice, and was impressed both times. The amenities are clean, the service was fantastic (Lizzet and Denis), and the prices were reasonable, compared to nice spas in my hometown.* We loved being close enough to walk down 5th Avenue. I wouldn't advise taking a taxi anywhere, but this is 10 or so blocks of local markets, big brand stores, and authentic local food. Don't fall into the traps some local people try to set. We were offered many deals "just for us" and lots of drugs. Some even pretended to be servers at the resort. It's a great experience if you travel with someone, and you resist their pressure.
Loved every minute of vacation at the Royal, the staff was fantastic, the food was delicious i couldn't find anything that i didn't like!! The rooms were spacious and clean, the pools were spacious and lots of fun events, the evening shows consisted of bands, dancers, trapeze artists, so much fun! This was an adults only resort, very relaxing yet fun, the beach was super close and beautiful! Pelicanos beachside restaurant was my fave and the staff amazing! The forecast called for rain the whole time but we had a shower that last a few minutes and the whole week was beautiful. Shopping on fifth ave was less then 5 min walk! Brand name stores were pricey but tons of souvenir stores.
We went to Playa just a couple weeks ago for the first time! The service was amazing and the property is absolutely breathtaking! Every time u sit down to eat at any of the restaurants they put the napkin in your lap for you and for the ladies they bring a handbag stand so u don't have to put it on floor or hang it in the back of your seat! The food was great at every place including the buffet..sooo much to choose from! The morning coffee at the Coffee bar along w/ the specialty pastries was amazing! We were celebrating our 15th anniversary and my husbands 40th Birthday! Our room was ocean view by the gazebo..maids come in and clean a make the bed perfectly along w/ towel figurines every day and they also turned down your bed for the evening! it was nice b/c if we wanted quiet and down time we just hung out where our room was if we wanted to party we went to the main pool were there was all kinds of fun activities going in! From a cooking class to learn how to make palea to dance contests and volleyball in the pool! The spa was amazing..we had a couples massage together! The staff was professional and the massages were amazing and relaxing..they also had a vapor room, sauna and a huge jacuzzi and cold dip pool. At night after dinner the shows were great entertainment in the main lobby and then my hubby and I would take a walk on the beach or lay on the the white cabana beds just listening to the waves of the ocean and starring in the the moonlit sky! One great thing is this property is right next to the local downtown where u can experience some local shopping and eats..literally steps right out the front lobby...so u get the best of both worlds without having to go far! We loved it soooo much!
We went here for a week during Labor day week. Great service! We stayed in Royal Swim-Up Beachfront Walk-Out room and it was awesome. This is a great area if you like to venture outside of the resort! My wife enjoyed their spa service and room service was always on point!
We stayed @ the Royal in Playa del Carmen October 6-13. We checked in after 1am so we ordered room service which was amazing!!!We went to the gym every morning & was met by Juan Carlos & Regina who made sure we had bottled water & fresh towels. The gym was clean with all the latest equipment. Our breakfast team in Spice, Adan, Reynaldo & Israel was amazing and met us every morning with the energizing green juice & coffee & made sure we were taken care of.We had my birthday dinner @ chefs plate which is in a restaurant setting unlike the Zilara that has one long table for 12. The staff, food & beverages were fabulous. My birthday dinner was perfect!!!In Maria Marie we had steak & lobster that was better than del Friscos & their soufflé was amazing !!!Asiannas doesn't have the cook table but the rolls & saki were amazing, something about eating in playa del Carmen in the sea breeze makes everything so much better!!!Erika made our appointments for couples Mayan messages by the pool with paty & yessica & followed thru with us to make sure everything went smoothly.Rosa Hoil took care of our room & for my birthday decorated the bed with rose pedals & had the hot tub ready for us when we returned for the evening. Every night she would turn the bed down with a towel animal. Our trip was amazing & we thank the staff for making it wonderful!!! We can't wait to return next year!!!
