Our Opinion

This is a great resort for couples looking for a romantic getaway. The property itself is incredible. Unlike other major resorts within the Riviera Maya strip, this one diverts away from the large style properties. All of the service staff are eager to please and are incredibly helpful and attentive. There are plenty of activities offered both during the day and night, so there is no shortage of things to do.

Another royal vacation in paradise!

My boyfriend & I spent 7 nights at The Royal Playa del Carmen from March 8-15. We had a wonderful stay at another Playa Resorts property, Hyatt Zilara, in Cancun last year and wanted to stay at The Royal PDC because the resorts are very similar. We had in a lovely central garden room on the third floor, with a view of the main hotel/restaurant area in one direction from the private balcony and the pool & main beach area in the other direction. There was apparently a storm right before we got there which left seaweed on the beach for a few days, but the hotel staff brought in equipment to clean it up and the beach and water were clear after that. There were always plenty of chairs available on the beach, where we spent most of our days where Maria our beach server tirelessly kept us supplied with cocktails. But we headed up to the main pool on several occasions in the afternoon when there was an interesting activity going on. One afternoon the chefs cooked up a huge wok full of delicious paella for lunch at the pool. We also enjoyed a fun foam party in the pool one afternoon, and another afternoon we were serenaded by a talented young man who played all the latest pop songs on an electric fiddle. There always seemed to be some kind of entertainment or games going on poolside. We ate at all the restaurants – Pelicanos, Asiana, El Mediterraneo, Maria Marie, Spice Buffet, and Il Pescatore (across the street at Gran Porto) – and the food was superb at all of them! I also loved the chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate truffles, and coconut milkshakes at the coffee shop. We really enjoyed the different shows in the main lobby in the evening, especially The Jersey Boys and all the talented dancers & aerial artists. Afterwards we relaxed outside at the Tequila & Cigar Bar where you could sip cocktails and smoke Cuban cigars. We cannot say enough about this beautiful resort and the entire staff who are all so accommodating and helpful and make you feel right at home . . . and we would like to send everyone a big heartfelt THANK YOU for making our week in paradise so fabulous and memorable!

Can't beat the STAFF!!!

This was my fourth trip to The Royal. Honestly, the staff MAKES your trip! Mario (my longest friend), Angel (Sharky), Magdiel and Silvia are so fantastic. My friends forever! Love Israel, Edwardo, and missed Juan at the pool. Such a great entertainment and workout staff. The food at this resort is spectacular. If you can't find something you like you're not trying hard enough or you are way too picky. Stop into Pelicanos and have a shrimp cocktail at noon. In the evening, reservations are suggested, but you can get into any restaurant you would like at almost any time. The pool staff is so awesome! Look for Luis at the resort bartending too. He has some fun tricks to show you. I will spend a lot of time in Playa Del Carmen as the years go on. Can't wait to make more memories at this top notch resort with my 2nd family!

The ROYAL Experience!

Having just returned from our trip to The Royal Playa del Carmen, I can easily say that this was by far our favorite resort at which we’ve stayed! Each and every staff member greeted us with a warm smile and was extremely helpful and friendly. Every request was greeted with a “Certainly!” The check-in and check-out process was a breeze. On my birthday, I returned to the room to find that our bed had been decorated with balloons and flowers which spelled out “Happy Birthday, Mrs. Jodie”, and there was even a mini birthday cake for me. That evening, the turn down service included a filled Jacuzzi tub that contained rose petals. The Royal went out of their way with all kinds of special touches that will provide fond memories for years to come. Our junior suite oceanfront room (#356) had a beautiful view and was spacious and comfortable, and the daily housekeeping and turndown services were amazing. It was fun returning to the room to see the cute towel art that they had left for us! The mini-bar was restocked daily with drinks and snacks. The food and drink options at all the bars and restaurants were plentiful and delicious, and I loved that we didn’t need any reservations. [I believe the only restaurant that requires a reservation is the Chef’s Plate, but we chose to skip that formal option.] The 24 Hour VIP Lounge always had tasty snacks and drinks available, as well as a couple of ping pong and pool tables, and an outside patio deck for fresh air. Room service arrived promptly (within ~30 minutes) and the “Magic Box” was a clever idea if you didn’t want to be disturbed. The hammock on the balcony provided much rest during the day, and the sound of the waves provided the perfect lullaby at night! We were always able to find a cabana in the afternoon, either by the pool or on the beach. You could see towels reserving some of the chairs, but it never got to the point that we couldn’t find a spot. The entertainment staff offered fun games poolside, which were a hoot to watch regardless of whether or not you participated. The pool staff was excellent about coming around and taking our drink requests regularly. We also took the bike tour at 10am on a Wednesday morning with Motto, which turned out to be both entertaining and educational. It was a fairly easy 7 km (~4.3 mile) path along the streets and sidewalks of town, and the guide provided pointers of how we could return if we wanted to further enjoy the area on our own. We stopped near the beach at Playacar, and we made another stop at a park to view some Mayan ruins. A final rest was taken near a city “jungle” to spot a few of the local animals within the trees. From start to finish, the tour lasted 1 ½ - 2 hours and was a pleasant way to spend the morning. The location of the hotel is so convenient! It is situated right in the heart of all the action, yet when you are actually on the resort property, you would never know that there was so much hustle and bustle right outside the front doors. This made it easy to do a little shopping without having to pay for transportation to get there. When we did choose to leave the resort to visit a local attraction (Xenses Park), it only cost us a $15 cab ride and took only ~ 15 minutes to get there. A variety of music was provided in the lobby, starting between 8-8:30 every evening. That was followed by a show, which started at 9:30pm and lasted between 30-60 minutes. We listened to a mariachi band, dj music, a violinista, and a local Latin band. The shows which were presented on the evenings we were there (M-Th) included “Welcome to Mexico”, “Show Country”, “Chocolate Party”, and “Show Street”. They all included some amazing dance moves and impressive coordination! It was a relaxing way to end our evenings and we never had a problem finding a seat. Staff members were always nearby, bringing us refreshing cocktails to keep the fun flowing. The bottom line: you will THOROUGHLY enjoy your stay at The Royal!

A romantic anniversary getaway

My husband and I had taken our children to the family friendly sister hotel of Grand Caribe, Cancun a few yrs ago. We stayed in a presidential suite which gave us access next door to The Royal, Cancun (Renamed the Hyatt Zilara) which we explored and dined at while our children enjoyed room service in our suite. We found both hotels to be exceptional so when we were deciding were to celebrate our 20th anniversary it was hands down going to be The Royal. We decided to try The Royal Playa del Carmen instead of Cancun and we were not the slightest disappointed that we did. Loved the location right on the beach, view or Cozumel and just blocks from the shopping strip of 5th Ave. Being just blocks from a Mega (Mexico's Walmart) made easy walking to pick up left behind supplies and cheap Mexico liquor to be brought home (don't buy it at duty free airport). Catching the ferry to Cozumel (walking distance from the resort) and renting a vehicle to tour the island was easy and highly recommended. We splurged on an Beach Front Walk-out Swim-up Suite. Our room was set with bubbly wine and treats upon our arrival in honor of our anniversary, free of charge. All food and restaurants were above expectations. Took advantage of the Coffee House for my iced Latte every morning. Only negative that is not well noted is dress codes are enforced. All evening dining requires no beach attire and The Chef's Plate requires men to have collared shirts, dress pants and shoes. Service was above & beyond. Our beach waiter Erik was always there to fetch our drinks when we were at our room pool or private beach cabana. Maid and Turn Down service was amazing. Our room was always clean with every amenity that we might need such as dental and shave kits. Our bed was turned down nightly with Hershey Kisses and towel animals. The bed was a bit hard for our liking but made having to go home the only thing to look forward to. Our fridg was restocked daily. We only asked once for extra bottled water in our room and got extra daily. There is fantastic Wifi service which made keeping in touch with our kids easy. Lastly, the evening acrobats/dancing entertainment shows were top notch! We are already planning our return. Can't wait to go back to this paradise!
