Great resort, Great food, Great people

Spent a week in Sept 2017 with my wife and 5 year old son.I'd say exactly what you would expect from a resort of this type. A variety of things to do, food to eat and excursions to experience. The hotel itself is very nice, sprawling and in great shape. Beware that some of the "ocenaview" rooms are obstructed by the design of the building and leave you with a very obstructed "oceanview"The food is a solid four star. What it lacks in 5 star quality and preparation, it makes up for with sheer volume and options. We stayed at the Paradisus La Esmeralda the year before and although there was less, it was by far exceptional. It felt like the Royalton had more line cooks in bigger kitchens whereas the Paradisus had top notch chefs working with a smaller menu. The weather was amazing all 7 days. Barely a cloud and if it rained, it was barely noticed. The beach is typical of that part of Mexico with a fair bit of seaweed, but very warm temperature. My big problem was with the sheer volume of trash both in the water and on shore. It seems like over the years, this problem has been compounding and the carelessness with which hotel guest and the locals throw trash all over the place is disturbing and depressing. Trash, plastic bags, plastic cups, straws and anything you can imagine. Let's all try to do our part. I think about my 5 year old going back with his kids in a few decades and being confronted by a heap of garbage which will make this beautiful place a very distant memory. A tip to the hotel management. Throughout the resort there are countless staff serving drinks and food, poolside and on the beach. I know us North Americans can't go 2 mins without being waited on (sarcasm), but how about taking just one or two of those staff and have them pickup garbage. Not just change the garbage bags in the bins, but actually walk around the property and beach and do their best to negate our impact on this beautiful part of the world. I for one won't mind having to wait 10 mins for a drink, but will greatly enjoy a cleaner atmosphere. Great vacation was had by all with Hunter's Steakhouse, the kids splashpark, and the coffee/gelato bar being the highlights. Come on fellow travellers, let's all be mindful that we put a huge strain on these ecosystems and let's think about future generations when we casually treat our garbage as if it's going to pick up itself. Probably wouldn't go back as nothing was that exceptions, but definitely worth a visit if you like the "more is more" approach to doing a 5* vacation.

Royalton Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa, Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, Mexico

We booked the Royalton Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa, Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, for our 4th visit to Mexico for us because it offered so much value for money. We opted for the Diamond club as we wanted that little bit of luxury offered with this upgrade, this included a butler service to help in booking restaurant’s, having a point of contact and for making things happen, so we decided that was the one for usWe arrived here on the evening of the 13th September after a six and a half hour flight delay in Stanstead UK so arrived much later than planned tired and somewhat grumpy but glad to be here.Louis in the Diamond Club reception booked us into the hotel offered us an upgrade to an ocean view suite with access to the Hideaway section – adults only, this comprised of two Jacuzzis one inside one outside, a good view of the Caribbean Sea, an offer we didn’t want to refuse but the only issue was the room had two Queen sized beds, not something my wife and I wanted to have, so Louis offered us the same suite one floor above with a roof top Jacuzzi but that wouldn’t be ready for 3 nights due to the room being re-decorated.Our butlers Eduardo and Julio kept us informed when we would be moving and were fantastic getting our restaurant reservations booked and keeping in touch to make sure everything things was okay for us.On the Saturday when we were due to move, we were informed the room wasn’t habitual due to the smell of paint but we were offered an alternative room, Julio came to inform me that the room wasn’t available but said we were being moved to an Presidential suite and proceeded to take me to the room 4301!Wow, what an upgrade, it is huge and it is luxurious, we have been spoil and it has prompted me to write this review before leaving, we still have one week left of this fabulous holiday and want to tell the world, when you come to Cancun, book in the Royalton Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa, Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, Mexico you will not be disappointed! We have enjoyed a variety of restaurant’s but the one that stands out to me is the Culinary experience, this is chargeable but OMG it is fine dining at its best, a 2.5 hour dining extravaganza with the best Chef on the resort and the resorts head sommelier who both explained about the food and then why the wine we were drinking was being served with the course we were eating, it is an experience I will never forget! The staff, especially Louis and our Butlers Julio and Eduardo have made this fantastic holiday exceptional, they are a credit to the Royalton Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa!I am now going to enjoy my evening with my wife and prepare to go and eat in the Italian restaurant at 19:30.Enjoy the pictures and don’t hesitate to come here and if you can upgrade to the Diamond Club or Hideaway section, do so as you will feel like you are Royalty in the Royalton Riviera!Steve & Helen

Second trip to Mexico - HAPPY with our choice.

(For those that want the summary, skip to the part just before I list the pro's, con's and suggestion's)This was our first long-haul holiday in 2 years, and we had debated about going back to the RIU Palace Peninsula (the hotel we went to 3 years before) or to the Royalton Riviera Cancun. Although both have their pro's and con's we were more than happy with our choice to stay at the hotel. We were a party of 4, consisting of young adult twins, mother and grandma. The moment we got to the hotel there was a drink and cold flannel ready for us. Check-in was nice and quick, and we were promptly given a ticket to give to the bell-boys who picked up our luggage to take to the room. The amazing part was NO KEY CARDS! The bracelet you are provided with is your key to the room, which meant you didn't have to carry around additional keys with you everywhere you went. Rooms:We booked 2 interconnecting swim-out junior suites in block 9, near the splash pool and the beach. Initially we were apprehensive that it was too far from the buffet and main amenities (as our grandma struggles to walk long distances), but soon found short-cuts. The rooms were big, featuring either a king size bed in one room and 2 double beds in the other. The rooms were beautifully decorated, having an open bathroom space (that could be privatised with the curtain) with a hot-tub bath, shower, toilet and 2 sink spaces, a flat screen tv with lots of choice tv and films in English, a sofa, desk, minibar (stocked with crisps and canned drinks (coke, diet coke, sprite, water and beer)). We spent most of our time at the splash pool as it was so close, but enjoyed having our own swim-out room and using it to our own pleasure. We had considered upgrading to Diamond Club but were more than happy with the room we chose. The maid came daily to clean the room, washing the floors and cleaning every nook and cranny. The turn down service was also provided every night (despite other reviewers saying this was inconsistent). We ordered room service for breakfast once and a late evening snack a few times. You order from your tv and then wait for a call to confirm your order (if you have any particular requirements or wanted anything else you could add it over the phone), this service did take between 45 minutes to an hour, however considering the size of this hotel it is understandable. It was our mum's birthday during our stay and they beautifully decorated the room with modelled balloons, tissue flowers, birthday banners, cake and sparkling wine - such a lovely touch! SPECIAL MENTION TO Lucy and Deysi who looked after our rooms for us in block 9, ensuring that our rooms were kept nice and clean and topped up with enough soaps, shampoo and conditioner and turning down our beds in the evening.Food & Drink:This is not our first all-inclusive stay, but we were really impressed by the choice of restaurants, cafe and bars (and the fact that you didn't have to reserve a table, unlike many other hotels). We mainly ate in the buffet for morning, lunch and dinner, but enjoyed eating at the Nibbles Snack Bar for snacks at lunch and Grazie, the Italian restaurant, for lunch and dinner now and again. The buffet provided great choice from morning to evening. In the morning, the food ranged from every kind of eggs, crepes/pancakes/waffles, pastries, fresh juice, made to order smoothies, meats and cheeses, fruit, cereals, bagels and more. A BIG SHOUT OUT to Pedro who made my spanish omlette every morning, Zayana who made the nicest Nutella, Strawberry and Banana Crepes and Julian who served us pastries with a smile every morning. We didn't get the name of the team that made my grandma's smoothie's every day but she absolutely loved them and is extremely thankful. A HUGE SPECIAL MENTION to Carlos our morning/lunchtime waiter who treated us like 'Royalty' (a gentleman, and a true asset to the Royalton brand) every day, making sure we didn't wait long for a table, or getting our table ready for us and greeting/serving us attentively, knowing our drinks order as soon as we got to the table, and surprising our mum with a cake and happy birthday song on her birthday. Another MENTION is Mariana, who looked after us with some guava that my grandma was craving, and also for kindness and friendly conversation during our stay, Eduardo and some of the morning greeting staff who always greeted us with a smile and friendly conversation, and Claudia who looked after my grandma when she had cravings for fresh ginger. The evening buffet catered different foods from the various restaurants: there was a Mexican food section, which my brother and I LOVED and visited most evenings. we want to give 'Flor' A SPECIAL MENTION who was at the Mexican counter. She would always serve us with a smile and happily made us tailor made burritos/tostadas/wraps, we are having withdrawal symptoms from her amazing cooking. The other sections consisted of vegan food, Italian dishes (pizza, pasta, cannelloni, calzone's), Mediterranean food (Couscous, hummus and pitta etc..), Sushi, Indian food, Cheese's, Meat's, Salad's, Kid's section, Desserts and Ice Cream and more! For those that aren't fussy vegetarian's you will not be bored of the choice of food this hotel offers. We tried the Italian one evening and enjoyed the freshly made pizza and pasta, however 'Misael' our waiter was not very accommodating when we asked for some vegetables to be added to our pizza, and was rather pushy on us buying wines. We preferred the choice of food and service at the Italian at lunch time and a SPECIAL MENTION to Miguel our waiter who knew our food and drinks order every time we sat down, and offered us great service with a smile. Our last day Miguel was unfortunately not working, and we were disappointed with the service from Rolando who kept ignoring us, attending the other tables around us and forgetting to serve us our food. We even tidied up our table for him. We rarely complain but it got to the point where we had to go up to the bar to order our drinks and see if we can order dessert - incredibly disappointed in the service by him. The cafe was great, my mum and I visited a fair amount of times for our milkshake/frappucino/tea/coffee fix and enjoyed the choice of pastries and ice creams on offer. The soft serve machine was also in the coffee shop so you could just go and help yourself whenever you felt like it. There was a lot of high-end and branded alcohol at all the bars which was nice for an all inclusive. at peak times it would get busy and take a little bit of time to get your drink but the bar staff worked tirelessly with a smile and friendly banter. We want to THANK Amador and Filemon at the Splash pool bar for looking out for my grandma, providing her with friendly conversation and serving her when she needed some water or a sugary drink. A SPECIAL MENTION to Rodri and Felicitas around the Splash pool who took time out of their day to talk to our family, especially my grandma who they adored and loved talking to and providing us with great service when we were thirsty - they became like family and my grandma is already missing them a lot! Also special mentions to Francisco and Roberto at the Martini bar, who swiftly served us every time we were there, and always made us smile and laugh!Amenities & Entertainment:Wi-fi is accessible in every part of the hotel; it is hit and miss in some areas and does go down slightly during peak times, but for a hotel so big it's nice that the wi-fi zone isn't restricted to the lobby area! The tv's in your room's and a board near the Royalton pool display the daily entertainment for the Royalton/Splash Pool's, fitness activities, kid's/teen activities and the night entertainment. It was nice that the tv displayed this so you could check in and dash to an activity that was starting. As a suggestion (We have listed below) it would be nice to add these schedules to the Royalton app so you could just check your phone throughout the day. The fitness activities were great fun, we particularly loved the aquafit and aqua zumba with a SPECIAL MENTION to Dani, Katia and Isabela who were so energetic, despite the heat, and danced away with big smiles on their faces, which made us enjoy the gruelling routines. The gym was nice and big split on 2 floors, and a studio space on the 2nd floor for spinning classes/kickboxing and TRX classes, and the tennis courts on the 3rd floor. On every holiday we always participate in water polo, water volleyball and volleyball. It was great fun to play, and Luis Antonio, Marco, Hasael and particularly Xavier always invited us to come and play and get involved. Huge shout out to Xavier from the entertainment team for adding a special touch to our holiday; always coming over to talk to us and get us involved, chatting to our family in the evenings, and contributing to a great holiday. Another asset to the Royalton brand and the entertainment team!It was disappointing sometimes that some activities didn't go ahead as there wasn't enough interest, and as activities were limited during the day (hadn't played water volleyball), this is a real shame. However, if you want to go on holiday and just relax, this is a great place to do so, as there is plenty of space to relax, drink and chill. For those looking for a bit of easy reading here is a list of pro's, con's and suggestion's for the hotel.PRO'S:- 99% of the staff were incredibly friendly and more than happy to help; we befriended a lot of the staff. - The buffet caterers would always try and help accommodate as best as they could, although the vegetarian food choice did get a bit tedious after the second week (pretty much the same choice every day). If you want something in particular, just ask! They were very happy to try and accommodate requests or to have a particular dish made.- The range of activities were great, although there was more choice for kids and fitness fanatics. (Suggestions for this below) Highly reccommend aquafit and aqua zumba with Dani, Katia & Isabela, and water polo and volley ball with Xavier, Francine, Hasael, Luis Antonio & Marco. - A great choice of restaurants that you can just walk into without reserving (which is a pain at other resorts), apart from the Zen restaurant which you do have to book (reservations open at 3pm daily; try and get there at around 2:30pm). Great range of bars with branded and high-end spirits, and even a coffee shop which is popular for ice cream, coffee, pastries and frappucinos.- Some of the best entertainment we've seen at an all inclusive. Loved the fire and light show, Michael Jackson show and the white party entertainment was great too. - Despite being a big hotel, there was a lot of convenient access, lifts and ramps for wheelchairs/prams and those who struggle to walk up stairs.- Lot's of pools to choose from, main activities are in the Royalton or Splash pool.- For those wanting to see turtles, the hotel has a turtle conservation area, and release turtles early in the morning when they have hatched. This is not all the time, but we were fortunate enough to see a release - and it's nice to see how much they care for them. CON'S:- The room minibar staff were a little inconsistent and didn't always replenish drinks. There were tea/coffee making facilities in the room however they rarely left any tea bags or coffee. (request these from room service if you require them)- Seaweed on the beach, and the sea isn't clear like other parts of Mexico, but it is nature so not the hotel's fault. (The staff worked tirelessly throughout the day to try and remove it all) - If not enough people were interested in an activity, i.e; water volleyball, then this activity would not go ahead. Most of the entertainment team would just announce on the microphone the activity that was about to start, and not bother going around and interacting with the guests to get them involved (suggestion below).- Room service at any time of day will take 45 minutes to an hour, however considering the size of the hotel, this is understandable. Room service choice is also a bit limited.- The hotel is situated by mangroves, with no shops or villages within 10 mins away. It is a long route just from the main gate to the hotel. We didn't go out the hotel this time, but others we spoke to either rented a car or paid (expensive rates) to go out of the complex.- Guest services situated in each block - You had to go and see them regarding a welcome pack and regarding other things. They were often not at their desk, so you were unable to sort these things out.SUGGESTION'S (For the hotel and guests):- Entertainment team need to have more interaction with the guests - this will encourage more people get involved with daytime activities, in addition to creating a more personal touch with the guests. (aside from Xavier, who always took time to come and greet and talk to our family and get us involved in the activities, which was a great touch to our holiday) RIU hotel's encourage this, and this is one thing we missed during our stay. Perhaps more activities could also be run during the day. - More lighting in the evening around the splash pool area; we had to use a torch to get to the block we were staying in (mainly to avoid stepping on cockroaches that came out at night).- Offer a free bus shuttle from the hotel to the main road or to local areas, so guests can go out and explore outside of the hotel. - Include activity timetables on the Royalton mobile app so that people are able to check what's going on. - More vegetarian options at buffet and speciality restaurants to accommodate for other dietary requirements (although the current vegetarian options are good).- (guest suggestion) When eating in the buffet, as you come in, we found the wait staff were more friendly and attentive on the left side than the right side. - (guest suggestion) Bring Mosquito spray, the hotel is surrounded by jungle and no matter how many precautions you take, you will get bit! We bought a mosquito plug and repellent but it didn't work. Many people had the mosquito bands but they didn't work.

Beautiful Resort

I have been to many all inclusive resorts in Mexico and DR. This was one of the nicer looking resorts. The grounds were kept up well, the restaurants were decorated well and the service was great. The restaurants were fine for an all inclusive, had better had worse. The buffet was fabulous for breakfast and lunch (never tried it for dinner). The customer service at the front desk was not the best. All in all, a great trip.
