Room for Improvement - Disappointed!

I recently stayed at the Hideaway Royalton Rivera Resort and Spa in Cancun. Actually, this was my second visit to this resort and it was a huge disappointment. Based on my initial visit (which was great), I recommended this resort  to a group of friends to celebrate a birthday milestone; despite the dissatisfaction we saw in the level of service we were receiving, as a group we were determined to make lemonade with the unacceptable and lemony service seen and experienced on a number of occasions. The resort seems to be tremendously understaffed in many key areas, which I believe contributes to a breakdown in service, we just did not get the exceptional service as sold and marketed by this resort. Like many other all-inclusive resort, the Hideaway Royalton Rivera Resort and Spa in Cancun is a beautiful property; nonetheless, no matter how wonderful a product might be, if the service behind a product is terrible, it dilutes the actual value, period. Case in point, the main lobby bar smells like raw vomit; it carries a stale scent like that of a dirty mildewed old space. Imagine, this bar is the welcome bar, one of the first impression a guest will have upon arrival. It’s like alcohol gets spilled, left overnight, perhaps for days, that smell gets mixed in with the unpleasant smell of aged fruits and juices. YUCK!! In addition, the bartenders seems unpleasant and inpatient, one bartender even when as far as to show his nasty colors, I had to check him. While he end up apologizing, this is unacceptable. On my first visit last year, I used the Spa and had a great experience. As a result, I promoted the Spa as a must have experience as part of our trip. Three of us from the group decided we would check out the Spa, the first day we visited we had a full Spa experience (massage, aromatherapy, the hydrotherapy circuit and the works) we enjoyed it. A few days later, we visited the Spa again, just to do the hydrotherapy circuit. They had one person supporting/attending nine people, we waited and waited before we were attended to and the service we paid for was never fully received. I mentioned the poor service we received to the two receptionists at the front desk; with no apologies, their excuse was that the Spa is just busy. I sent an email to Mirna who I was told is the Spa manager, detailing the unwanted service, it has been weeks and to no avail. I have not received a response. Unacceptable! The staff serving at the desk in Diamond Club Lounge are friendly, pleasant and kind. However, the food stations in this lounge is not replenished often, so beware of fusty and aged food. We ate a few times at the Sports bar, again the service is below standard for what’s marketed by this resort. Staff are unpleasant and seem overworked. We weren’t looking for buddies and friendship, we were hoping to receive exceptional service. That did not happen! I am a This is my home resort as a Travel Smart member; I also have serious concerns with the legitimacy in the promises made as part of selling membership, details of this will be in another post. I would say for now, if you do decide to visit this resort, beware of the Travel Smart sales people and their promises. Unfair Business Practices!! Stay Tuned!!! On a more upbeat note, the rooms are cleaned well. Night time turn down occur as they should on the clock. The Gourmet Marche, International Buffet – the food is on point. There is definitely room for improvement. I know some manager/PR person from the resort might give a sorry explanation in response to this post. Do you really care?

Just amazing

Just returned from the most amazing two weeks of our life. This hotel is just amazing from the rooms, cleanliness, staff etc. I have to mention Rodri who looked after us round the pool who went above and beyond to look after us and Alejandro from the buffet restaurant who greeted us with a smile and excellent service most days. I also want to say all the staff are lovely though. I would recommend this hotel to anyone but especially family's the kids pool is brilliant and the choice of food is fab to.Thankyou all at royalton for giving us an amazing holiday we will 100% be back love the henson family.

Amazing hotel

Where do I start? Could not believe size of place so many different restaurants to choose from and great selection on buffet daily. The staff would alway say 'it was their pleasure to assist you' could not do enough for you(most of them). Just 1 thing as i am a wine drinker I didnt love the wine that was included but they do offer an extensive wine list at a price, if your looking a nice wine be prepared to pay around $50 and ask for toom credit or they have take you to reception to sign and its a pain in the backside ..other than that hole place for both couples or families is amazing great entertainment on nightly and weekly shopping stalls put up in grounds also. Anther tip is defo try to use the spa 1of the best I've ever used i booked couples massage costing $200 and was abs amazing. If you are wanting yo get out of the hotel a taxi into cancun is around $40 so we were happy enough to stay as was a relaxing hol for us. Gym is also great and great air conditioning in all the rooms its just when you walk outside your toom the heat hits you. And make sure to bring mosquito repellent as we got bit alot we bought the armbands they did not work at all! Other than that hotel was great would definitely like to return with the family.

2 weeks in paradise

We stayed at the Royalton for 2 weeks in July 2017 and upgraded to diamond club when we booked. We arrived at around 5pm to the hotel and were met by a lady with a cold flannel who showed us through to the diamond club check in. The check in area is air conditioned and we were shown to a desk with chairs to sit down while we checked in. We were then introduced to Isaac, our butler, who then took us straight to the room. He offered to give us a tour but we said we just wanted to go to the room to freshen up after a 10 hour flight. He said to call him the following morning so we could sort out our dinner reservations. We did so the next morning and Isaac was at the room within 10 minutes. We gave him a list of the restaurants we wanted to try and by the time we came back from the pool that day, the reservation cards were all lined up on the TV stand for the next 8/9 days. Isaac left us his contact information and said if we needed anything to just call or message him. To be honest, we didn't really need anything else from him so we didn't see him for about a week. Then he checked in on us a couple of times in the last week of our holiday to make sure we didn't need any more reservations etc. We saw a lot of the other butlers checking in with other guests everyday by the pool. I think it all depends on how much you want from them - we didn't want to be checked on everyday but if you do, then they will. Room;We had a standard room overlooking the mangroves. We had specifically asked for a room with twin beds which we did get in the end but i had to email them before arrival to get it changed because the room selector was showing our room had a king bed. We didn't use the room selector so we were pretty sure we would be overlooking the mangroves and as we don't spend a lot of time on the balcony anyway, it didn't bother us. However, the smell is horrendous and i don't know how you would sit out there if you wanted to. Our room was interconnecting with next door. For the first week, we didn't hear a thing. However, the second week, and American family arrived who were quite loud. The first night they were there, they woke us up at 5am and continued to be loud so we eventually got up. The beds were very comfortable and was cleaned everyday. We also had turn down service most nights as well. Only issue with the room is that the TV volume is locked to only go up to a certain level (i'm guessing to avoid noise complaints) but when you have the air con and the fan on, you can barely hear it. Of course, you don't go on holiday to watch TV but when we were laying in bed at night we like to watch TV which we couldn't do. We loved the jacuzzi bath and the shower was excellent. Shower door did leak but then there isn't really anything to seal it so is to be expected. We just put a towel down before getting in. Pools; We stayed by the diamond club pool because is was close to our room and because the service was so good. Every day, Carlos or Alberto would come and lay out our towels for us, ask how we were, tell us what entertainment would be on that evening etc. They made a real effort to remember us and we looked forward to seeing them everyday. Another special mention has to go to Cesar by the diamond club pool. He gave us such excellent service. He was by far the best drinks waiter by the diamond club pool and some days we even moved sun beds to make sure we were in his section. He made sure we had a drink at least every 15-20 minutes and if they went warm he would change them without us having to ask. He remembered what drinks we liked and would sometimes bring another without asking. He would go and find us one of the cooler boxes and fill it with bottles of water and ice and would check on these throughout the day to see if we needed more. I know for a fact that this wasn't just because we tipped him either because we didn't tip him until about 6 days in (we don't tip for every drink - we just gave a larger tip halfway through and at the end of the holiday). In fact, one day we were in someone else's section and had 3 drinks all day which only highlighted how quick Cesar was. Cesar was incredible and was a highlight of the holiday for us. RestaurantsArmadillo - we ate here for lunch and for dinner a few times. We tried the fish tacos, the hot chicken sandwich, the bbq ribs, the fajitas etc. It was all hot and was ok but nothing memorable.Agave - this was by far the worst restaurant for us. We both ordered shrimp in garlic and chilli to start. They didn't taste of anything let alone garlic or chilli, they were barely cooked and were half cold. We didn't eat them because we were worried they weren't cooked. I could see the food coming out of the kitchen from where we sat and from my view, a lot of the food in agave isn't being cooked fresh. It all came out too quickly and my suspicion is that they prepare everything in the day and then serve it out in the evening. I had snapper for main which did come out hot but it just wasn't very nice. We walked out of agave and straight into the buffet because we were still hungry. Carribean Grill - We had surf and turf and it was nice. Very limited side choices though and the rice we had just wasn't very nice. Zen - is very hit and miss. We ate there 3 nights. The first night was good, second was VERY good and the third time was awful. I had the same salmon dish twice and my sister had it once too and every time we had it, it looked and tasted completely different. This was so frustrating for us because after our second visit, it was one of our favourite restaurants but the inconsistency put us off. I would say though that this is probably one of the better restaurants overall. Hunters - again inconsistent. The steak is ok but nothing to write home about. The sides are actually quite good, particularly the mash and the vegetables. However, the starters are not good at all. We ate here 3 nights as well and i had the same steak everytime. The steak doesn't come with any sauce so it is very dry. Then one night, it came with a bowl of gravy on the side which improved it a lot but then the next time there was no gravy again. Grazie - this is in our opinion the best restaurant. The starters are nice, and the steak is better than at hunters. The desserts were also very good. It is open air though so hot and sticky to eat at. Buffet - The food in the buffet can be very good. The omelette stations for breakfast are very good and the cooked chicken, lamb and pork were also very good. The meat is very good quality. There are also lots of vegetable options and they weren't overcooked. However, the fish and meat stations where they cook it fresh for you don't work well in my opinion. Everything i had from these stations weren't cooked for long enough and so were inedible. This is where the hotel falls down for me. It was all just very average and a bit bland which was disappointing to us. We have stayed in another hotel in Riviera Maya twice before, which was much cheaper than the Royalton, but the food was much better there. We also both got ill while we were there and are still having problems now we are home. Something i did notice, was that Armadillo was the only restaurant to offer hand sanitiser before going into the restaurant. In the other hotels i have stayed in, they won't let you into the buffet without offering hand sanitiser. I also had one experience in the buffet where a man was walking around eating stuff off his plate with his fingers while he was still putting stuff on his plate. Entertainment - The entertainment team do a fantastic job. Luis walked around the diamond club most days and offered for us to take part in various stuff. There is no pushing though. If you aren't interested they go away which in my opinion is the best way. Luis also let us know about a releasing of baby turtles into the sea which was the first release of the season. It was really great to watch and I was glad not to miss it. We didn't watch a lot of the entertainment by the main pool in the evenings because we tend to eat later which meant we missed a lot of it. Everything i saw and heard as we were walking past was very good and it was always busy in that area. So overall, we had an incredible holiday. We did our best to not let the food taint the experience and the service level far outweighed the average food. I think the hotel does a really good job of making the hotel not feel crowded even when it is at full capacity. We are so glad we got to experience this hotel but I'm not sure if we would return. We both love food and in my opinion, for the price of this hotel, it should be better and more consistent.

Not what I expected

First of all, I have to say that I was hoping to live an amazing experience but things started to go wrong the second that I called to check some things regarding with my reservation. (It was a couple of days before I arrived) When I first called, the people that are in charge of reservations were super rude saying that they couldn’t help me, and the first word that I heard when I said ¿Can you help me? Was a NO (of course the lady never heard what I was trying to say). Second bump in the road, it took more than 2 and a half hours to get the room, the attitude of the staff in the front desk was terrible, they weren’t nice at all with me, my mother and sister except for Fernando, who really try to help us after all that wasted time, but then wen I was chatting with some of my friends that bought a day pass, they were treated exactly the same or even worst. You really need to work on this. While we were waiting at the living room near the lobby we noticed that it wasn’t quite clean and the furniture was worn out. I mean, I understand it is an enormous space, and maybe its complicated to keep it beyond clean, but at the 3rd floor of tower 9 you could see a lot of unfinished food on the hallway, like pizza and soda all over the place. The common areas and pools were good but the beach was full of seaweed, it was a little bit disgusting trying to go through. I really hated that with the excuse of giving me a welcome package (two days late) the concierge was trying so so hard to sell me the time-share, I wasn’t interested but she was pushing me to enjoy “the amenities”. They gave it to me on Sunday and I was leaving on Monday. So, I have mixed feelings because I didn’t had the amazing experience that I was expecting and I don’t think that well return because all of this.
