Our Opinion

Sandos Playacar is an amazing luxury resort for those wanting quality experience and service. The resort area is huge, meaning there are plenty of things to do. From beachside activities to the nightly theatre entertainment the quality is reflected in all elements of the resort. If you are looking for top-shelf liquor, opt to be more of a premium traveler when staying here. There is a wide array of food items, which could get a bit overwhelming. However, they are all good in quality.


The Sandos Playacar is simply, a stunning resort, set on one of the nicest stretches of beach in Playacar. This quality 5-star resort features excellent cuisine, immaculate service and offers such generous inclusions as such as 24 hour room service, a stocked in-room mini-bar and a great fitness centre. The Hacienda section creates the atmosphere of a Mexican village surrounded by beautiful tropical foliage. Each 10-unit building has its own solarium and private pool. Enjoy luxury at its best!

 Location: On the beach, 5 minutes to Playa del Carmen, 60 minutes from Cancun, 45 minutes from the airport.

Nice resort, not real plush

This is an average resort in Riviera Maya area of Mexico. Food was average, service was good along with entertainment. Lots of vendors to buy cigars, jewelry, souvenirs at night in the courtyard. Not too far from Playa DelCarmen which is a fun visit.

Worst Front Office & Reservations Service EVER

I made a reservation for a colleague coming to Playa del Carmen to work with a local customer. I made a reservation for Saturday and Sunday nights, but our work got extended one more day so I went to the Hotel's front desk to ask for a one night extension (Monday night, usually a slow night). Nuria, at the Front Desk, took my request and went over to ask who apparently was a supervisor, his name is Benjamin. He was on the phone for about 10 minutes while I was still waiting, so since I had to go to work, I went over and asked Nuria if there was someone else she could ask, since I had been waiting for a while. She said there wasn't...I kept waiting and finally Benjamin got off the phone, so without any apology or sense or urgency, took his time to check if the reservation could be extended... he said that the reservation could be extended one more night but in order to do so, I had to call Expedia or the reservations department, I could not just simply extend a reservation as I was standing in front of him and ready to pay for the room. So I called Expedia, who thanks to the hotel keeping them on hold, took 35 minutes to finally get the response that the reservation could not be extended, we needed to make a NEW reservation so my colleague could stay in the hotel. The inefficiency and lack of customer service at this hotel's front desk and reservations department will definitely keep me and any friend or colleague of mine away from ever staying there again.

OK Stay at the PlayaCar

Just came back from Sandos Playacar Resort (Mar 8-14). This is our first time visiting this resort and I must disclaim I had the luxury of having Elite privileges due to the generosity of a friend’s timeshare purchase. However, all of the Elite accommodations were full so we had to stay in the renovated family section. The room itself was quite nice with 2 double beds and fold out couch, nice bathroom and Jacuzzi tub. However, the distance to the Elite pool and Elite beach was about a 10 minute walk. It was disappointing not having access to Elite accommodations though.PROS- Beach and ocean, this is the main reason to stay at this resort- The Elite check-in- Accommodations at the family section- Main Buffet for breakfast was great- Oriental alla carte- Mexican alla carte- Steak House alla carte- Brazilian Rodizio alla carte- The evening Elite bar was amazing and best service ever- The ceramic paintings for kids- Location to Playa del Carmen- Cupcake café- The Crepe café- The Disco- Lobby Bars- Elite Beach service was greatCONS- The Elite Restaurant for breakfast has the worst service sever- The people at Guest services are useless if you require assistance with lost and found items- Even though we were wearing Elite wrist bands, the elite sales personnel were still pushy on trying to sell upgrading- Teen club was difficult to get on games- Main Pool is crowded- Elite Pool is small- Room service was slow and got the order incorrect

Disappointing second visit

We stayed at Sandos 3 years ago with 3 of our children and were very disappointed at the the way things had changed including food, drinks, and service. We were traveling with no kids this time. We paid extra for an early flight to be able to enjoy the day at the resort. The line was not very long for check in, only 3 people being helped at the desk and 3 people in line in front of us. It took us over an hour to check in! EXTREMELY SLOW. The person who helped us was very rude and condescending to my husband who smiled when she greeted him and gave her our last name. She repeated the greeting in a very unfriendly way until my husband repeated it. He wasn't rude in the least and didn't deserve to be treated that way. That was the beginning of the terrible service by her. The first thing she did was laugh in our faces because our reservation had a honeymoon package on it. She acted as if we trying to pull something over on someone because we are almost 50-year olds, and she didn't believe we were honeymooners. We just booked the only beachfront room available online on the Funjet website that happened to come with a honeymoon package. We paid for it. We were supposed to received a fruit basket, a bottle of wine and a free upgrade, which was ironic given the escapade we went through just trying to get the room we paid for. We received none of those things. Then we asked for a room that was not on the second floor of the ocean front beach section because we have stayed there before and we know that the trees block the ocean view. She proceeded to tell us that ocean front did not mean we would get an ocean view. WHAT? Isn't that why we paid all that extra money?? Then she said that there was only 2nd floor left. We were among the first to check in as we arrived at the resort before 10:00am so we knew that was her second lie. We asked if we could get moved if a room became available, and she said they were booked for the week. Third lie. We asked for a supervisor and she said he was busy helping other customers. We finally gave up and went to the beach. We decided to try again at check in at 3 with a different person.Two of the things I loved about this resort 3 years ago was their food and drinks. They used to make their mixed drinks from scratch complete with fresh coconut cream and juices. Now they use mixes, together with the gut rotting liquor they use made mixed drinks a huge disappointment. They must really water the liquor down because I am a 1 or 2 drink lightweight and I could drink Tervis cups full of drinks all day and not even get a buzz. My husband requested Bacardi rum which helped the taste a little but definitely watered down, even at the select club beach bar. We did enjoy the Dos Equis beer that was an improvement over corona. At 3:00 we went back up to reception to get our keys. We again stood in line for 30 minutes. We made sure to talk to someone else this time. When I asked her about getting off second floor if a room became available, she said she didn't know and went and got her supervisor, Mario, who was most kind. He said we could get third floor the next day and that he would put us in the computer right away and have our bags moved the next morning. We were without a room from 10 until 3 between checkout and check in but we said it was worth it. That was all the person in the morning had to do! The second night we were very tired because of the long day the day before. We went to bed at 10:00 pm. Not long after we were woken by pounding. They were building a shelter structure right outside of our room and started the pounding and sawing after 10:00 pm. They didn't stop working until almost 2 am! I understand it is hot there and they don't want to work during the day, but it is certainly cool enough by 6 or even a little later, but being kept awake that late was more than an inconvenience. Then 2 nights later they started again. My husband called the front desk at 11:30 wondering how late they were going to work. They told him 2am again! He informed them we could not sleep, but they didn't say they were going to stop. More people must have called because a half hour later they stopped. They worked on it late afternoon after that. The food at the al a cart restaurants was just ok. The buffet was so good when we were here last. The fresh bread used to be amazing. Now it's all dried out and crumbly. It tasted like it had been in the freezer for 3 months and defrosted. If they ran out of something, ketchup, maple syrup, hash browns, bacon, ice cream they would not put more out. We were just out of luck. If we asked they would just shrug and say there was no more. It didn't seem to matter if we came late, or were among the first served, they were always out of things. The food, especially at breakfast was almost always cold. We stuck to fresh cooked eggs for breakfast . That was the only warm food there most mornings unless you were lucky enough to stumble upon pancakes or French toast while they were cooking it. One of my favorites was the coconut ice cream and I was only able to find some twice out of the 8 days I was there. The fresh fruit was as delicious as I remember, my saving grace. The restaurant behind the pool bar (the French restaurant in the evening) was supposed to be open for breakfast and brunch. It never opened for those times the entire week. This area was under construction when we were there last and we were looking forward to that convenience of not having to get dressed and go all the way up to the buffet for food as we were in the beach section.We loved Sandos last time we stayed, and that's why we returned. We love the beach and beautiful ocean, the beautiful, well maintained grounds, our howler monkeys that served as our alarm clock every morning, the clean public areas, at least in the select club section, we can't speak for the rest, the friendly staff (who like you more when you tip), and the activities and entertainment - there is something for everyone. Our beachfront room was spectacular. We never had a problem getting beach chairs. Just a note- the chairs in the select club section were brown and they got EXTREMELY hot in the sun. They only give you one beach towel so bring your own to cover the entire chair because the one they give you does not. We love the location of Sandos as the southernmost resort on that stretch of the beach. It is fun to walk south where there are rocks along the shore that are so beautiful when the waves hit them, and wild untouched shoreline with fun little coves between rocks to swim in. We are sad that Sandos has gone from 5 star to 2 star in our book. We would have been repeat visitors. Our friends were going to come because I recommended it based on our first visit. I'm glad we experienced it again before they booked as we can't recommend it now.

Sandos Playacar is absolutely wonderful!

The resort is clean & beautiful. Wonderful beach and great food. We did need to change rooms initially due to a musty ordor - but the second room fine. The staff members were truly top notch! Zayas - the young man that set up with the spa - was so friendly - and spoke great English! He really does a wonderful job! Also, the waiter named Daniel - was great! He remembered our names and drinks and was amazing!
