Wish we stayed longer!

I just returned from a short stay at Secrets Maroma Beach and had an overall amazing experience at the resort. Check-in: 5 stars I was traveling with a group of 4 other girls and we took a red-eye flight arriving in Cancun at 7am. We got to the hotel around 8:45 am and the front desk staff was very accommodating - they gave us a buzzer and told us to return when it went off. We wandered off to have breakfast and we had just finished eating and were just lounging around when both buzzers went off. It was great timing because we had a tour guide picking us up at 11:30am. It gave us all enough time to shower and get ready. We did not get pitched about any memberships (I think because we were a group of girls - not a family or couple) Overall, check-in was smooth and we were happy to receive our rooms hours before the official check-in time. Building/Concierge: 5 stars We were all on the 3rd floor of building 12 and really loved the location. It was close to all of the restaurants, far from the noise of the pool, and best of all, we had an amazing concierge; Alberto. He was so kind and accommodating and willing to go out of his way to make sure our stay was amazing. Amongst other things, Alberto helped us book car service to PDC, spa appointments, and checked on restaurant reservations for us. He would pop up around the resort and walk over to make sure we were having a good time. I am not sure if all concierges do that, but it was really nice to see a friendly face taking care of you and making sure everything was perfect. We were also able to communicate with him via email during our stay so that made planning even smoother. There was some noise coming from the room below us because they were fixing something, but it was minimal and only during the day when we weren't in the room, so it didn't make much difference.Restaurant:We dined at a few different restaurants during our stay, but these are the ones that stood out. I'll rate them from lowest to highest.Portofino: 2 stars Our experience at Portofino was horrible to say the least. On Saturday night, we had a car picking us up at 9:45PM to take us into PDC. We arrived at Portofino around 7:50 PM and were told that it was a 30-40 minute wait to get a table. This didn't make sense because over 60% of the restaurant was empty. I tried to explain to the hostess that we were only here for a short stay and didn't want to have to go to the buffet since we were celebrating our friend's bachelorette party. She said there was nothing she could do and we should just go to the buffet. We started talking amongst ourselves to decide on a POA when I saw her manager walk up. I went back to the hostess and she started to say again that it was 40 minutes, so I said 'Excuse me, one moment' and ignored her to speak directly to her boss. I explained the situation to him and at first he said there was nothing he could do, so I said "I am sure there is" he finally gave in and said that he would have a table for us in 5-minutes. Once we were seated, we waited 5 minutes for our waiter . There were a total of 5 other tables in the inside of the restaurant. Once he finally came to introduce himself, he took our drink order and disappeared for another 10 minutes. We never saw him again and had to rely on various other staff members to take our food and dessert orders. The food was mediocre at best - my fish was undercooked even though I requested well done. My friend ordered a pasta dish and it had way too much salt in it. If you're staying at SMB, I would recommend skipping this restaurant. I am giving it a 2 stars only because the manager finally gave in to accommodate our request for a table - now I wish we had just gone to the buffet.Himitsu: 5 starsWe made a reservation for a Teppanyaki table at Himitsu and it was AMAZING. Our chef was Jesus and he was incredibly funny and entertaining. The food here was the best we had during our whole stay and I would definitely recommend making a reservation here.Beach: 5 starsBeach food/service: 4 starsThe beach is absolutely gorgeous. Hands down the most beautiful beach ever. We walked along the coast and ventured into the beaches of nearby resorts and the sand felt rougher - not sure what they do at SMB, but the sand feels so amazing. We noticed that beaches at the other resorts were full of seaweed, but at SMB there was a tractor going around cleaning the coast of seaweed. During the day they have workers pickup seaweed to make sure it was clean at all times. The food and drinks at the beach are great, but the service is very slow and the servers only come around ever 30 minutes or so. Servers are friendly, but it's just slow service, so maybe they should have at least 2-3 people working each side of the beach.Entertainment - We went to the "nightclub" and were a bit disappointed at the music, but it's understandable since the visitors at this resort are a bit older. We came to relax, so it didn't really bother us as we had gone out clubbing in PDC the night before - it was fun to watch middle-aged men and women try to dance. We requested a few hip hop songs from the DJ and the dance floor cleared up because none of the older people knew what to do. I won't rate the entertainment since this was the only experience we had with it.My massage experience- 1 starOverall spa: 3.5 starsThe water circuit is really small and it's outdoors which was a bit strange to me. The steam room was wet and drippy - we could see each other across the room because it wasn't steamy enough. Ice plunge pool was nice. My friend's had amazing massages, but mine was a whole different story. Our sessions were all set to begin at 2 PM, so we were in the relaxation room at that time. One by one, my friend's went into their sessions, but my therapist didn't arrive until around 2:03 PM (when you're sitting alone waiting, those 3 minutes seem like forever) to take me to the massage room. Once we got into the room, I got under the covers and she returned to the room and started the session - around 2:07, she put a warm pad on my back and excused herself from the room. I peeked at the clock to see the time. She returned around 2:13/2:15 to begin the session. I had asked her to focus on the right side of my back, but she forgot and didn't treat it any differently than the other parts. The massage felt super rushed and she had fast short strokes - I didn't feel relaxed at all! Before I knew it, at 2:47, my massage was over! Barely 30 minutes! I returned to the locker room, took a shower, and as I was returning to the relaxation room, my friends were emerging from their sessions, a good 10-15 minutes after me. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. I didn't want to be a complainer and get the therapist in trouble or anything, but next time I return I will make sure I don't get her again. Staff - 5 starsThe staff is so friendly! Everyone remembered us and would come over to say hi and make sure we were doing okay. Rooms: The rooms are spacious and clean. We didn't spend much time in them, so there's not much else to say. They were modern, clean, didn't smell strange and were well stocked with beverages and toiletries.

Outstanding 10 day vacation

This resort offered the same outstanding experience as the first time we visited. Relaxing, accomodating and beautiful. Staff including Ivan and Dario at beach cabanas (great bargain at $50 per day), Henry at pool, Genesis (hostess at World Cafe), Hugo at excellent el Patio who makes terrific Tequila drinks, Regina who talked us into a special tablle at the Mexican Dinner at the pool and Flavio at the water show dinner were the best. By the way, reserving a special table at the restuarants with an order of wine is very attractive because wine prices were reasonable, seats were great and enhanced the atmosphere. We aren't big late night entertainment buffs but the dinner shows and the "Idol" presentation were fun. Glad we returned.
