Our Opinion

Much like its sister resorts, Secrets Capri and Secrets Maroma, the Secrets Silversands is luxury all inclusive at its finest. Top notch service and excellent rooms and facilities. The beach is nicer at the Secrets Capri, but all in all this is still an excellent resort. Like all Secrets, this resort is adults only, so families might want to look at the Dreams Resorts which are also related to the Secrets properties.

Good and Bad

We just returned from our stay at Secrets Silversands. Our room was the disappointment of our stay. The first morning I discovered the glass mirror panel (bath side) was covered with mold. Also our drapery at the top was broken allowing morning light right at the bed. We called and they did clean the panel of mold, but two days of calling and stopping at the front was needed to repair the drape. The housekeeper didn't leave the correct products or towels after cleaning. Chairs were stained. Rooms needs to be refreshed. I should not be required to do QC for the hotel. The food and bar service was excellent. I want to comment on the The Englishman's review. Yes, it was lively at the main pool (staff conducted games) , but plenty of areas to go if you wanted a quieter experience.

Very nice resort

The resort was very beautiful and very suited for couples. I traveled with a group of single friends and so we didn’t get the opportunity to meet other singles. The restaurants were ok, some lacked service and others the food was ok but not something to write home about. The best eating experience was the breakfast buffet, the service was excellent and the food was great with an excellent variety as well as the French restaurant whose staff went out of their way to make our last night’s meal a true experience. The rooms were very comfortable and elegant and the service was exceptional. The channels provided were very limited to Latin programming so even that lacked variety. The shows were great, the crew was very talented and exceptionally gracious. The games at the pool were very fun but the crew didn’t mingle much with the guests. The music at the pool could have been better, they lacked equipment so at time there was no music at all. The pool and pool bars closed way too early for my preference, but the locations of the pools were very accessible. The night life was lacking, the live music was great but played very little Latin music which we expected since we were in a Lantin country. The location of the live music would be more desirable if there were fans for ventilation and comfort. The “disco” was located in the sports bar while there were people trying to watch sports – that was very inappropriate and the music lacked variety.I would return but only with a significant other or for deep relaxation and not necessarily to meet new single friends. I expected better food and better service for the price paid.

Great hotel but a few annoyances

Our second visit to the Yucutan peninsula and Riviera Maya, but our first time to an Adults Only resort. It may sound risqué but the most risqué thing about this hotel was the Moulin Rouge-esque entertainment show. You'll find from this review I seem overly critical of the resort, however I also really enjoyed my stay here despite the frustrations. We arrived at around 1330, via a hire car, to the hotel. We had checked out of our previous hotel in Cancun at midday and were driving past Secrets on the way to Playa Del Carmen, so thought we would see if we could check in early or at least dump the bags.Secrets Silversands is located not far south along the coast from Cancun International Airport and the Zona Hoteleria itself. It is well signposted but as the resort is quite a drive from the main road it's turn off is shared with a Breathless resort as well as an Azul resort, meaning you won't see a grand Secrets entrance from the main road like many other resorts along the stretch.Luckily our room was ready so the check in process begun. We were greeted with a cold refreshing towel and a glass of bubbles each and ushered to sit down at a desk with a receptionist, thus removing a traditional reception desk as expected. It was good to know we wouldn't have to wear wristbands like other all-inclusive resorts removing the need for tan lines! As the check in process was completed and as we were about to make our way to our room, we got passed over to someone from VIP services who took us to sit on another sofa. We thought this was just to explain about the resort and what it can offer, but it seemed to be an introduction to a timeshare meeting as she was giving us information about a lot of offers she could give us, as long as we go and have breakfast with her team in another Secrets resort or the Breathless up the road (another AM resorts hotel). She also made out that these resorts were better than the one we had chosen! Isn't that nice to hear when you've just arrived!I can understand the want of a hotel company to sell timeshares, but I feel that there is a time and a place for this sales patter and it's certainly not when you first arrive. If she had explained there is the option to discuss this at another time then brilliant, but it felt quite a hard sell. We didn't even know if we liked the brand of hotels yet!As we were finally allowed to go to our room, it was a nice touch to see they had tastefully decorated our room with rose petals and balloons, as well as leaving a bottle of bubbly for us to enjoy as we were celebrating my wife's birthday and our wedding anniversary. Little touches like this really are appreciated and really make you feel special. It was also nice to see our names listed in the celebrating section of the daily 'sundial' resort info sheet. There are a plethora of excellent dining options to choose from. Breakfast had one option of the World Cafe buffet where you could choose any type of cuisine to devour. Lunch times you could choose from either Oceana or Seaside Grill a la carte by the pool, a poolside BBQ or again the World Cafe buffet. Dinner options range from the Rattatouille Mediterranean, Portofino Italian, Bordeaux French, Himitsu Japanese, El Patio Mexican or the two poolside restaurants that also opened at lunch. A lot of these restaurants were closed on different days of the week which was listed on the 'sundial', but it was quite hard to plan when you would like to go as you would only know closures the night before. Perhaps Secrets could have a board that publishes what days each restaurant would be closed over the course of a week? It may be we were staying at the hotel during off season but seemed surprising. At the Himitsu restaurant they have 2 show tables with  'Benihana style' cooking and a set meal. There are 3 sittings for this 1830/1930/2130 and can only be booked in person from 1530. The queuing system seemed odd for this as when the doors were opened to book, the staff didn't seem to go by line order. Frustrating if you had waited. The rooms were very comfortable and nicely decorated. The hotel is only around 9 years old but you can tell work needs to be done on the rooms. I'm not usually overly critical of dints and dents in room as wear and tear is expected, but when you walk in and it looks like something has been dragged along the width of the cupboard only to be touched up by grey paint, it doesn't shout luxury. The bed was very comfy and air conditioning worked very well. We had a jacuzzi bath and double shower, separate WC and a double sink. A coffee maker was located above a fully stocked minibar with fruit juice, Coca Cola, Diet Coke, Sprite, Fanta, water and Coronita beer. A couple of times we had to ask for the bar to be refilled and instead of saying "right away sir!", we would be met with "someone came at [insert time] to do this". They clearly hadn't or I wouldn't be calling you!Sadly we often found this kind of attitude with the front desk/concierge staff. Instead of trying to find a solution they would always have an excuse or say they didn't know. I'd go as far to say that most of the staff in that area were some of the most unhelpful or unknowledgeable ones I've ever come across in a hotel. Some times they didn't even want to know. After our first night all the water coming out of the taps and shower smelt very strongly of sulphur/eggs/sewerage - you pick. After waiting for nearly an hour since calling 4 times and being told maintenance was on its way, my wife went to reception and was told that we could change rooms. This was a highly inconvenient solution as we had already unpacked and seemed to be a cop out as there was no apology or no reason for why we had waited so long. However it worked out great for us as we were moved to a king size bedroom overlooking one of the many pools. The only staff member who I found at all useful on the lobby level was Luis on concierge who sourced some headphones for us as my wife had lost hers. It's sad as it really doesn't give off a good light of what secrets are clearly trying to aim for.Another aspect of pure irritancy was the fact you could not go anywhere without a member of the Spa team trying to sell you a massage. Every single day there are 2 tables set up by the Lobby bar and restaurants with staff asking you, every single time you walk past, if we knew about or would like to visit the spa. We also found this quite amusing as the hotel is known as 'Secrets Silversands Resort & Spa' so I'm pretty sure most people know there is a spa in this hotel. Maybe the fact the treatments are so ridiculously overpriced that they feel the need to 'heavily discount' or hard sell to attract customers. Another uncomfortable aspect of the hotel was at every dinner time when dining a-la-carte, when taking your seat and being presented with the menus, you would also be presented with a wine list. On our first night we thought 'this was nice' as we may be able to choose from more than one house wine as it being AI. Oh no! These were all priced, ridiculously high (I might add), with waiters continuing the hard sell and the sheer look of disappointment we got when we decided to stick with house wine. Don't even get me started on the "free photoshoot" sales girls roaming the beach. It's such a shame as it felt like you really couldn't relax or go anywhere without a hard sell. Even at the bars where apparently all liquor is top shelf, some of the liquor displayed is only available to purchase as a bottle at an additional cost. Now I understand that hotels and resorts have to find other revenue streams, but to have it all shoved in your face constantly is very annoying, especially as staying at Secrets is not cheap! Last year we stayed in a Riu family resort and apart from the odd 'Coco Bongo' or beach activity seller (out of the hotels remit due to the public nature of the beaches) we were never hassled or felt pressured into purchasing anything extra in that resort. Shame really. We found the hotel room areas to be very noisy. I can understand marble floors won't have much insulation but from around 0630 everyday we would have a plethora of guests to hotel staff banging and slamming doors, dragging furniture and talking very loudly in the corridors. Add to this once a week the groundsmen mowing the lawns outside your rooms from 7am. Maybe this is Secrets way of dragging you out of bed to enjoy the weather?!However, as I said at the beginning, the negativity comes with a heavy heart as I really did like the resort. The food quality in each restaurant was exceptional and all of the hospitality staff were brilliant. Lying on the most beautiful beach daily being served drinks by brilliant waitresses, servers in the restaurants always willing to go the extra mile so you would enjoy your dinner, housekeepers ensuring our mess of a room was looking clean every day, groundsmen tending to the most beautiful hotel grounds every day and entertainment staff working long hours always making sure you're smiling. These are the staff who make the resort. We went on a very enjoyable 8 mile return bike tour from the hotel to Puerto Morelos with the excellent Jonathan from the entertainment team and we were also able to take out kayaks from the beach. Funnily enough we weren't sold these as these were inclusive activities as part of your stay. There are plenty of pools to choose from around the resort with many being on the doorstep of your room block. The main pool had music and activities all day and a couple of hot tubs perfect to relax with a beer or cocktail in. At the front of the resort there was a nice stretch of beach with sun loungers laid out. We never found the beach to be overly busy and we may think this is because you couldn't really swim in the sea due to the shallow waters, reef and sharp rocks. Great for snorkelling though! There were 4 main bars around the resort with our favourite being the Baracuda that overlooks the sea. Sitting there sipping a G&T watching the sunset is just devine. In the lobby bar area there was a 24 hour cafe serving delicious coffee and all types of snacks throughout the day. Another option for food is the 24 hour room service option, a nest way when you can't be bothered to leave your room! The resort has a large outdoor theatre located next to the main bar but it really seemed under-utilised. Stand out performances were a brilliant Rock Show and authentic Mexican Show. There were other shows put on but not every night which seemed odd. It was a shame really as watching some good shows with a drink after a lovely dinner would be really suited. The hotel advertised a sports bar where the latest games would be streamed from American Football, baseball and football. Sadly it looked and felt like a dingy room with some screens, a projector and lots of chairs. I think it would be much more appealing if they turned it into a sports bar with good atmosphere, great bar snacks and lots of beers on tap (ala Hooters). The best sporting nights the resort did was when it set up an outdoor area to watch Monday Night NFL on a big projector! All in all you will enjoy your stay at this resort, if you can look past the same frustrations we had. I would quite happily stay here again but I would prefer to try another Secrets resort before returning. I feel if the company thought about some of the practises in its hotel it really could be exceptional. Sadly they're quite far off from the perfection the advertise

Secrets silver Sands

This was our third time there, we were a little put back this time, although all the food was good and staff as well, the rooms were aged, we had our handle on the sliding door fall off as well as the curtain rod, told the staff, didnt seem to care, the sliding door also seemed like someone tried to pry it open. The ground is very slippery around the pool seen numerous people wipe out as well as the bar tender behind the bar, even saw a women wind up in a wheel chair. Over all we still love this resort and will go back it is in need of some refreshing on things

Amazing honeymoon

We visited for 10 nights for our honeymoon. On arrival we were greeted with a cold flannel and champagne and were accompanied to our room by a friendly young bell boy who told us all about the hotel. Our swim up room was located in block 6 and was decorated with a honeymoon banner on the door, rose petals on the bed and an ice bucket with complimentary champagne. On our first full day we noticed our sun beds outside the room (for our personal use only) were in the shade which was not ideal as we wanted to enjoy the afternoon sun away from the main pool. We asked if there was the possibility to be moved and the front desk were only too happy to accommodate so the next day we moved to block 5 where we could enjoy the sun into the late afternoon.Rooms - spacious with a sofa and table and chairs for in room dining. The beds were huge and bed linen good quality. It would have been nice to have had beach towels in the room to use on the sun loungers outside our roomRoom service - quick service and tasty food - definitely recommend nachos! Pools - limited shade and you had to be up early to get a bed under the canopy at the main pool. The waiters and waitresses were fab - a special shout out to Leonardo!! There were several pool floats but these were collected back in c4pm which seemed a little early. Entertainment team - friendly and welcoming. We didn't watch any of the shows as we tended to have dinner c8/8.30pm followed by drinks Restaurants - our favourites were the French and Italian - great tasting dishes and the snails were delicious! The lunchtime buffet was fab so much to choose from. The bbq near the beach was good though the food was a little repetitive. Breakfast was equally as good and I really enjoyed my daily omelette. We were greeted daily by Stephany in the buffet restaurant and she is such a happy lady and always had a smile on her face! Bars - I did feel a little disappointed with the drinks. We are big gin and tonic lovers but sadly the tonic was not fizzy at all. The champagne and Sauvignon blanc were both good and became my drink of choice in the evenings. Cocktails were very slushy and it was difficult to drink as the hotel have a policy of no straws. Concierge - we felt the communication could improve as we asked several times about the TVs channels in the room and no one returned to us answering our query.Sip and save - we visited NOW sapphire as we had family members staying there. We felt the food was better at SSS but did think the decor at NOW Sapphire was more luxurious even though it's considered a lower tier hotel within the Secrets chain of hotels. Overall we had a fabulous honeymoon and this is one of our favourite hotels in mexico
