Our Opinion

This resort is well known for its beach area. If you're looking for a resort that has a beach with super soft, white sand and plenty of places to lounge, then the Reef Coco Beach is for you. The resort itself is small, but is well maintained with friendly and attentive staff. There are good buffet items to choose from, but only two a la carte restaurants. While this is a smaller resort situated away from the main strip, it is only a few minutes walk to the city center.

This secluded tropical paradise provides easy access to the many fabulous attractions in the area. Enjoy the beautiful views, personalized service, and the best nightlife the Mayan Riviera has to offer.

Location: On the beach 45 minutes from the airport and 45 km. south of Cancun within walking to the picturesque village of Playa del Carmen and the ferry to Cozumel.

  • Beautiful sandy beach
  • Intimate boutique-like atmosphere
  • Family-friendly, with kids club and pool
  • Close to Playa Del Carmen's 5th Avenue
  • PADI 5 star dive center on site

Vacation getaway

This is s very nice quaint little resort set on the beach! The reef is only 30 yards from the beach so bring your snorkeling gear! The staff is very friendly and eager to please. There is a melting pot of nationalities here! Wonderful place would definitely go back!!

Best Vacation Ever

I took my 21 and 18 year old sons to Mexico this June to celebrate their milestone Birthdays. I am now a single mom after 20 years of marriage so taking this vacation was kind of a big deal for me financially. After all of the places we could stay I am so glad that I chose the Reef Coco Beach. I have stayed in the Cancun and Riviera Maya areas years ago in larger resorts but my first was at a smaller resort that was so comfortable and I truly fell in love with Mexico. This was the experience I wanted for my boys and that is why I chose Reef Coco Beach. I am so glad that I did! We loved the beauty, the special feeling of knowing the staff. Being so comfortable wherever we were in the resort and being treated so incredibly! It was truly the best vacation we ever had.

Great food and pool

The pool is amazing and the food was terrific. Their staff was great. I wish they monitored the swim up bar a lil more. I really like that the buffet area had an indoor air conditioned room to eat. I really liked the Italian restaurant as well. I didn't go to the Mexican restaurant because I'm probably the only Texan alive who doesn't like Mexican or TexMex food. The beach has boats in the front so use the gigantic beach to the side or upgrade to premium for the day and use the Playacar's location beach. The seaweed in this region has been bad for 5yrs and the hotels are just constantly cleaning it off their beaches. I feel so bad for the hotels, but I think tourists who frequent this area are pretty used to the algal blooms. The hotel is walking distance from 5th avenue for shopping. It's safe by city dwelling American standards to leave the resort. Plenty to do at the resort if you're worried including nightly entertainment. All inclusive resorts have plenty of security surrounding the hotel including the beach part so you're safe. I've never been the type to upgrade to premium but I will definitely do so from now on! It's so worth the private beach, private bar, free shuttle and use of the Playacar location amenities, as well as the BEST part: Hibachi dinner at Samurai!!! It was my fave! You get better alcohol, but it all tastes the same to me and I never get hangovers so that part was a non issue. Guys! Just upgrade one day and if you love it then do it for the remainder of your trip. It's just $18. I didn't like how hard the bed was. The pillows were nice, but the beds need some upgrading. The other negative, and keep in mind these people do not represent the hotel, were the Leading Vacation group. Ugh! It's so not worth the free gift. Only do the 90min presentation if you 1) want whatever free gift they are offering (trip to Tulum, premium upgrade, etc) or 2) vacation more than 3x per year. They offer worldwide deals, premium upgrades, and terrific amenities for $500/yr so it's really only worth it if you vacation a lot. Two things I didn't like about the presentation: you're required to eat breakfast in front of them even after trying to tell them that you'd rather eat away from them and the final closing guy does not like any questions, not even one, to be asked. It was pretty weird. I adored our guy who talked to us for a little over an hour, it was his boss that gave off a weird machismo salesman type vibe.

Week at the Reef

We chose this resort because of its smaller size which we seen as a plus. It has everything the larger ones have but in a smaller footprint. We loved the pool and pool side games that went on daily. We loved the Latin and Mexican restraunts. The beach view was awesome, we loved the boats anchored there. The food was delicious, the rooms were large and clean, staff was good and friendly. The only problem we had was that the swimup bar didnt function well. Nobody manned it on the pool side. You had to get out and go to the walk up side to order your drink, might as well take the stools out of the pool and not advertise it. All i all we had a great time and loved the stay here.

Vacation at Reef Coco Beach

My wife and I stayed at The Reef Coco Beach from 24-Jun through 04-Jul-2017. This was our 4th time to Mexico and Riviera Maya. All previous times have been with a different hotel chain so we knew what to expect from a “budget” All-Inclusive resort. We decided to stay at Coco Beach because of the location and close proximity to Playa Del Carmen. The location of Coca Beach was absolutely fantastic for us. Quinta Avenida is within walking distance, about a 10 min walk to get there. There is a 7-11 right on the corner as you get to the resort so you can get snacks, smokes or sun lotion for a reasonable price instead of using the resorts gift shop. Coco Beach also provides complimentary bike rentals (with baskets) for the guests to tour around on. This is by far the best way to get around Quinta Avenida, just bring plenty of water. The Reef Coco Beach was not a large hotel at all, very quaint and VERY laid back. Laid back to point of almost boredom. The same pool music was recycled day after day and the daily activities seemed dull. There were not too many gardens but the ones that were there were very well maintained. The sandy part of the beach was also very clean with plenty of sun chair throughout the day. As many have mentioned before many boats are anchored off shore which can detract from the ocean view. We did not mind it very much but it could be a problem if you would like to see open ocean while sunbathing. We upgraded to the Exclusive package and were very disappointed with this experience. We were promised certain amenities in our room upon check-in like a bottle of wine, bath robes and a full fridge of drinks. These only came after I called the front desk saying there were not there. Yes, this is minor but our expectation for upgrading was that they promised these items they should be there without us having to ask. We continually had to ask for our fridge to be stocked with water and soda as it was not even after a turn down service. With the Exclusive package you are also provided with top shelf liquor with no surcharge. This did NOT happen! Each time we ordered a drink the bar tender would immediately reach for the well liquor. This even happened at the private exclusive bar, which is way out of the way to get to. I would expect at the Exclusive bar, there would be ONLY premium liquor and not the cheap stuff. Our expectation was the server would see our bracelet and ask what our preference was but that is not how it works. I understand the staff is very very busy and can’t proactively check each bracelet, so to have premium liquor you need to ask. This is something we were not aware of and with the issues in the room and the low quality drinks we did not experience the Exclusive Package for half of our trip. We brought this up to management and they promised us compensation but as of now we have not seen that.Another perk with the Exclusive package was the ability to visit the sister resort in Playacar. This was very nice as we spent an entire day there. The beach in Playacar is absolutely amazing, no boats crystal clear waters and hundreds of sunbeds. We were very pleased with this experience. The food at Playacar was much better as well as we stayed for buffet lunch and dinner. The food at Coco Beach was simply average at best.We mostly went to the buffet for all meals and by far breakfast was the freshest and most appetizing. Lunch and Dinner was just not that good, not many options and pretty stale. We also ate at each Ala Carte restaurant and enjoyed both the Mexican and Japanese. We did not have a surcharge for these dinners due to upgrading to Exclusive. The Italian restaurant was average at best, the chicken parm was very dry and the cream soup did not taste very good. Also if you wanted a premium coffee it is very had to get, like a mocha or latte. They will charge you 3 bucks for this at the lobby bar OR walk down to the buffet. Just a little inconvenient and something worth noting. In general we enjoyed our stay because the location and the staff. Each of our issues with our room (stocking drinks) was addressed in a timely manner and the service was very good. I also want to acknowledge Milton at the pool bar as his smile and attitude were off the charts. He also made very good drinks. Thanks a ton Milton! Sadly, I do not believe will stay at Coco Beach again though as we will stick the hotel chain we stayed at previously.
