Our Opinion

The Tukan is a resort that is suited for travelers who are budget conscious and are solely looking for a place to stay that is in a prime beach location. The hotel is located very close to a stretch of beach with plenty of restaurants and entertainment centers. It can get a tad loud in this area, so the hotel would be best suited for travelers who are impartial to loud nightlife. The rooms are well-maintained and modern. There aren't many great food choices if you're looking for an all-inclusive deal. However, this is great for someone who wants to explore more of the Riviera Maya away from resort grounds.

Great time

We stayed for a week and enjoyed the all inclusive option. This was a great concept especially since my husband does not like to sit at the resort or on the beach. The front desk people were very nice. Bell Hop came on time when we were leaving. Transfer was great. There were 3 of us in a mini bus when we got on at the airport and we asked the driver to stop for beers - he said no problem. Didn't really eat at La Ceiba as we are not buffet people. Instead we opted to have our breakfast ala cart at Los Tuplipanes. The food was good at Los Tuplipanes -the front desk gave us a coupon for a lobster dinner and it was very good. Portion sizes we found were too large so we started to ask them to give us half portions. You could order anything off the menu here. We ate lunch at Legends - regular bar food, didn't enjoy the pizza though. You can also choose anything from the menu here. Living bar was a perfect place to sit and have a cocktail and watch the action on 5th avenue. Service was slow at first but if you tip well it gets better. You had a choice of about 6 items to choose from here to eat. They were all good. Cocktails were really good. Kool Beach club - the cocktails here were good also - but they only item you could order off the menu was the american breakfast - scrambled eggs, ham, toast. You need to sign for anything your ordered and on the bottom they put suggested tip 19 pesos on all the bills - we looked at the total though and tipped according to what the actual price was. Eating anywhere in Playa isn't too expensive and even though we had the all inclusive we opted to eat out quite often. The pool at the hotel was quite small but the few times I wanted to sit at it I got a chair. The rooms were clean but there was a funny smell from the shower. Don't think the tile was grouted properly. Beds were comfy. Sometimes you could here noise from the street but you have to expect that when you are staying right on 5th avenue. Other than that the only thing that would make the rooms better would be a mini frig.

Beautiful 3 weeks at El Tukan

The hotel is in the center but still in a quiet area. Pleasant environment of almost family nature. It fits well into the local environment against large hotels. Pleasant atmosphere. The staff of the hotel are friendly and helpful. Good room cleanliness. La Ceiba's staff are also very helpful. Especially waiters Sandra and Manuel. The kitchen is visible to Joel and can recommend food. The bar serves excellent Javier.Silvie and Bohuslav

For the purpose of our trip, it was ok

Arrival at 12 pm on April 9... lots of departures and only us arriving. After doing the long line up... they told us we did not need to wait however the room was not available until 3 pm. It was expected, I was prepared and ok with it. We had plans for the afternoon anyway. Not my my first time in this situation and probably not the last. The reception staff were amazing I must say. Very helpful and understanding. They gave us the WIFI password right away so we could reach our Playa friends and gave us a free cocktail at the Legend Sport bar.Back from our excursion at 6 pm.... our luggage was not delivered to our room... I had to go back down and ask for it.... then I found out... no fridge... no ice machine... lolll hilarious isn't it?just to let you know... we did not pick the all inclusive and it was the best decision ever, I believe (for me anyway). The upgraded rooms with all included were complaining all over the place. I am not fussy but saved me a lot of unhappy expectations. The best about this hotel: LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! Beds comfy and excellent spaces for all your needs. Not luxury... if you want to be pampered, do no go there. situated in the middle of the 5th avenue... best location in my point of view for bars and restaurants. If you are on the budget.. do not eat on the 5th avenue... they double their prices... then reduced a little bit if you are Canadian.Now... bars to go... the hotel is between calle 14 and 16th.... most of the popular bars are on the 12th.... 2 minutes walk (including COCO BUNGO). Be aware that the prices changed dramatically in these bars.. before we were paying $35 US for all you can drink all night... we found out it was over.... at Mandala we paid $210 Us + tip for a simple bottle of vodka and pineaple juice... fun but I will never go back there again. We went to the Ambassade... The 3B... The fat Tuesday... and lots more that I do not remember the names.... From last October, La Vaquita and Palazzo were nice too.Where to buy supplies: Walt Mart is the cheapest and has more variety of everything (boose, wine and produce). I do not like to give my money to USA while in Mexico however it helped a lot. 10 mins walk from the hotel... cheap taxi if you go between 1 pm and 5 pm.... (deal with the cab drivers... they can deal with you there... do not take the first price they give you).Taxis are more expensive at night. all shops are closed at 5 pm on Sundays except tourist traps.on the 10 avenue across from COCO Bungo... there is a corner store with ATM ( called OXXO)... ice (necessity with no fridge) and beers or juice or sodas.... reasonable in prices. we bought our foam cooler and ice there all week. you can take your fridge with you to the beach after... how convenient is that!????Fun beaches.... honestly I did not even try the El Tukan beach... They di not tell me where to go... they did not try to sell a day pass... their lost to me. We went twice to Mamita's beach... fun fun fun... music and party place. We walk to Playacar beach where we were located before in the last 2 years. Still as beautiful as I remembered. We had a chance to say hi to our old bodies from all inclusive secluded resorts we were before. we took the local bus and went spend a day at the most Americanized beach on Mexican land... CANCUN, beautiful but was not for me... nothing about Mexico.... absolutely nothing!!!!!! hated it.Excursions: we did only one this time however the best one I ever did on Mexican soil. COBA my friend... an era before Chitchen Itza and located between Chitchen Itza and Tulum. ( I did both Chitchen Itza and Tulum in the last 2 years). You learn so much there if you like history. I climbed the pyramid and it is a big scratch on my bucket list... not to many places you can do this in this lifetime. For me it was the Highlight of my vacation. My second highlight was discovering food everywhere in that city of Playa Del Carmen. We tried all the street food you can imagine and was all excellent. I did not have any stomach problems at all. If you want a great Mexican lunch... brunch... the name is NATIVO. Amazing! It is a sitting place on a top of a fruit store.I gave you all my tips... go explore and enjoy! El Tukan is a nice foot on the ground if you are adventurous and not planning vacation at the hotel or resort.Hoooo bad side... the MAID was hawfull..... I had to leave her notes everyday. She forgot to leave us towels 2 days in row.... then no toilet paper.... then my daughter's watch disappeared from my bag in my suitcase....She never washed my shower I believed... we had body painting on the first night... we could still see paint in the shower on our last day. My room was 213. we filed 2 complaints. One for the missing towels and 1 for the missing watch. She left all her soap and stuff in our room the last day.... but no towels and a missing watch.. I assumed she had to leave fast.... what do you think? It is s secured hotel, all security guards were on duty and amazing to all guests.I will rent an apartment next time, I don't think I will ever go to a hotel again in Playa Del Carmen, at least we will have everything for our buck (fridge, space....friends friendly)

Great location

I loved the place. No luxury but a great location. Easy to go wherever you want in the downtown area within walking distance. The service and food were really good as well. Only problem was that it was too noisy. I could clearly hear the people around me when I was in my room. Made it hard to sleep at time. And I'm not sensitive to noise! Overall, it was a good experience
