Our Opinion
The food at the Valentin Imperial is very impressive. The Japanese sushi restaurant is particularly good because it can be hard to find good Asian cuisine in Mexico. The food areas are super clean and there are no reservations required for restaurants. The property itself is quite nice, although maybe not quite 5 star in terms of first impression, more like 4.5 stars. The beach is nice but can get red flagged if the weather is windy. Good bar service on the beach. 20 minutes from Playa del Carmen which is about $20 by taxi each way.

Our home away from home

Just returned from our 10th 2 week vacation at the Valentin Imperial Maya Resort. We are always pleased to see a lot of the same staff still here after all these years. It shows us that this is a good resort that looks after its employees, which is important to us. We stay in the Golden suites to ensure that we get lots of walking in as we need to work off all of the wonderful food here. We also enjoy eating outside at the Mar Tiera Restaurant for breakfast and lunch, but were a little disappointed that they had moved our favourite waitress for the past 9 years, Melina, over to the main restaurant. We enjoyed seeing Angel for breakfast and lunch along with Kevin and Omar. Our beach concierge Francesco was great as was the beach waitress Thalia and waiter Alberto, always will a smile no matter how hot it was out. The resort does a great job of getting the seagrass cleaned up every morning and the man driving the tractor definately deserves a thank you. We enjoyed a martini each evening before dinner at the Martini Bar and made a visit each night to see one of our favourite girls, Yvonne, at the cigar bar, even though we don't smoke. The girls at the Indonesian Restaurant are wonderful and we enjoy spending time with the hostess Serena, and the waitresses Neillaly, Maricella, Gabriella, and Mary. The concierge for building #2, Armando, was a great help while he filled in for the main lobby concierge and assisted us several times during our trip even though we weren't in his building. He is a great asset to the resort. Jose Luis was fantastic. He has been at the resort for many years and looks after the pool, beach,, shows, bars, and weddings. Despite being one of the busiest men in the resort he always took time to say hello and give a hug. He is really a wonderful person. The beach here is one of the best on the Mayan Riviera, and if you are a pool person they have a huge pool with fun activities as well as a lazy river for floating around and relaxing. There are bars throughout the resort and if you are at the pool or beach they have great wait staff always happy to bring you your favourite beverage or the ;drink of the day'.While at the resort they had started construction renovations on the Indonesian and Mexican restaurants. We will be returning in September and look forward to seeing the improvements. We also hope to find Melina back at the Mar Tiera Restaurant so that we can enjoy her company again each morning. This is a beautiful resort and we can't wait to come back.

Awesome! Read below for suggestions!

My sister and I did a one week stay here and had an incredible time. We were so happy we chose this resort! The highlights for me were the excellent customer service, amazing food choices and overall beauty of the resort grounds/pools/beach. I will cut to the chase and put some suggestions, advice, tips for those planning a visit below:Pool/beach: I read on many reviews to bring an insulated cup/thermos. I did not do this but then ended up buying one halfway through and would highly suggest it. Not only does it keep your drink colder for longer, but the cups that they use at the swim up bars are smallish in size and if you hand them your large insulated thermos they will fill up it for you..: so less trips to the bar!For the larger pool, I would recommend going down to the pool by 9 o'clock, before breakfast, to put some towels down. After 9 o'clock most chairs are taken especially in the shade. For the lazy river pool, we found getting chairs was not really at issue at anytime. This pool is more quiet and peaceful. It was nice to take a break every few days and try out this one but I definitely preferred the fun at the other! NOTE: this pool has a little snack area where you can sit and get lunch and the nachos are amazing!!!!On some days the beach had big waves but if you walk to the left you'll see an area where the flags are usually yellow (as opposed to red) and you can swim. I also suggest to get there by 9 AM to get chairs. However, we noticed that on days that we went in the afternoon there were plenty of open chairs so if you wanted to do the pool in the morning and then head to the beach after lunch you would have no problem.Every night a pamphlet of the activities for the next day go out and I would recommend reviewing it because some of the activities are really fun!Restaurants: for breakfast I would recommend Le Marche. What a spread!!!! Mar Tierra had a similar spread but for some reason Le Marche seemed better ...maybe because the food was kept more indoors in a cooler area. Lunch- Mar Tierra buffet by the beach is the only restaurant option and is decent. However, don't forget the lazy river pool has a small area where you can sit and they had Panini's and again really good nachos! Also, at the big pool they would have snacks like tacos and paella by the bar. Some days they came around with a little cart and served mini sandwiches which were delicious! Now, do not forget there's 24 hour room service. Many mornings we ate breakfast a little bit later and so we weren't hungry for lunch and so we would get a room service snack when we got back to the room before getting ready for dinner. We got the veggie quesadilla and it was so delicious.Dinner- in my opinion #1 is French restaurant! I suggest the onion soup, filet mignon, and creme brûlée. Shout out to German (pronounced Heremann)!! #2 the Italian restaurant. I really liked the Caesar salad and all the different pasta options were good. #3 Ginger Japanese for sushi****note, we did not do the hibachi because we didn't have our act together enough to make reservations (hibachi is the only thing you need reservation for) and we tried regular menu and did not love it. Food was just okay. BUT the sushi was awesome and the sushi chef was really great and would basically customize the rolls to make whatever we liked! #4 the Mexican restaurant. The fajitas were really good. We did not try the Indonesian restaurant and we did not go to Mar Tierra because we heard they were just okay. NOTE: guys must wear nice shoes and a collared shirt with pants to most of these restaurants. We met guys who missed out on being able to have dinner at the majority of these restaurants because they did not pack the appropriate clothes. Very important! General tips: I brought $100 in ones and about $40 in fives and I'm glad I did because the customer service was the best I've ever had at any resort and it made me want to tip every time I was serviced. The employees work so hard and they deserve it. If you get a massage I would recommend doing it at the spa versus at the pool because at the spa it's like a whole experience where you get a bathrobe, a warming neck thing and can use the sauna and steam room. Also, there is a little bit of wiggle room with negotiating the price. If you get a massage please request Yuri she was amazing.Buildings 2 (silver suites) and 3 & 4 (deluxe junior) are very centrally located. Do NOT feed the iguanas ... they will not hurt you unless you're dumb like me and try to hand feed them. I injured my finger quite bad, it was 100% my fault but I can't stress enough not to feed them. Which segues into my next point that there is an on-site Doctor who is wonderful if you run into a problem. Bring plenty of sunscreen from home at least SPF 30. You will need it! Sun screen is very expensive to purchase in Mexico whether on the resort her off.We did an excursion that was three parts: the morning was a tour of Tulum (Mayan ruins) mid day was snorkeling in a cenote cave and afternoon snorkeling at a Lagoon followed by lunch at a beach club. I would highly recommend this excursion it was a good combination of activities and very fun. That sums it up! I hope you choose this resort and that you enjoy your trip!!

10 Year Anniversary Trip

Overall, great resort, definitely 5 stars. Would come back if we decided to do another vacation to Mexico. We reserved an Emerald Junior Suite near the beach. We learned that you can't see the ocean from the room because of the trees. So if you are looking for a room with a view of the ocean, it really doesn't exist here, which is okay. Our vacation started with being offered to upgrade to an Imperial Suite on the lazy river for $400, which included the "Privilege" package. We jumped at it and it was definitely the right decision. The room is enormous and although we don't spend a ton of time in the room, it is nice to have the space. Plus you get an outdoor jacuzzi tub and a deck with lounge chairs. Gives you the ability to be outside in a lounge chair, but keep some privacy. The Privilege package allows you to make reservations at any restaurant. We ended up making reservations at a different restaurant every night for 8pm. We had no problem getting a table immediately, but others without reservations were waiting for 30-45 minutes.Privilege package also allows you to reserve a cabana at the pool or the beach. Nice to have a comfortable bed and shade to hang out in, plus a place to put your stuff. When we checked in, we asked how full the place was and were told that it was at 96% capacity. We were concerned about the pool / beach being overcrowded, but that was never a problem. The resort is so big and spread out, that even when the place is full, it never feels crowded. The downside to that is that you do a fair amount of walking, which we enjoyed despite the heat because it allowed us to walk off the great meals we were having. They do have bellman riding around in golf carts and are happy to give you a ride if you don't like to walk or are not wearing the appropriate footwear. One thing that we were not expecting was the tipping. We have stayed at other all inclusive resorts in other countries, but this is the first time in Mexico. Other places we have been to, tipping was not expected and many times if you tried, they wouldn't even accept it. Mexico is different, which is fine, I was just not prepared for it. I would recommend that you bring at least a few hundred dollars in small bills (1s and 5s) because you have to tip for drinks, dinner, cabanas, bellman, etc. The front desk had change, but often ran out. We had to use the ATM while we were here because we didn't bring enough cash, which gives you USD, but charges you a very high exchange fee. If I come here again, I am going to bring $500 in small bills. We did not have a bad meal while we were here. They definitely spend money on the chefs and it definitely shows. We ate at the French, Italian, and Mexican restaurants. All the food was excellent, hard to pick a favorite.I was not a big fan of the house wines. All Chilean wines, which I normally like, but not this time. For dinner we bought a bottle from the wine list. Good selection, but not so huge that it is difficult to make a choice. Was happy with all the wine we bought. We spent a couple of nights in the Salon Partagas, the cigar bar. Great, comfortable atmosphere, met a lot of nice people. I enjoy a good Cuban cigar, a little pricy, but as expected for a resort. They also have hookahs with flavored tobacco, which we did not try, but others seemed to really enjoy. The La Plaza Espana was a great atmosphere for after dinner. Always had good bands and good DJs. By that time of night everyone is feeling pretty good and having a good time dancing around. Good if you like to dance or people watch.

50/50

Not really sure how to rate this one. It has pluses and minuses. First the good. Very clean, food in all the restaurants very nice (however see the minuses on the food.) Decor not bad for a 10 year old resort. (Age was told to us by one of the staff). Activity staff great fun. Now the not so good. This place is mosquito city. There is lots of standing water and tons of foliage around. Too much foliage especially around the bedroom areas. I bought repellent whilst I was there and still got bit to death. One night I had to walk back to the room because I forgot to put it on and we were eating outside. I really do think each restaurant should have some at the counter for emergency use. I also think the hotel should spray all areas much more thouroughly. The food like I said was very nice however, the wait staff were mostly useless. By the time they got the food to the table it was warm/cold. The manager in the Italian restaurant needs to learn a thing or two about customers. He was adamant we weren't going to sit together even at 9pm. My husband physically took him to four empty tables and asked why two couldn't be put together to accommodate the 8 of us. His answer because we're closing that part of the restaurant... The only restaurant that was the exception is the French. There is nothing but praise for everyone working there. Now it's good news that there is no need to book in the restaurants however we were a group of 8 and could not get a table before 9-9.30. No way no how would they book us in unless we sat separately. I think the hotel should make exceptions for groups of 8 or more. Poor grandma couldn't join us because it was too late for her to eat. You also have to wear the correct attire for everything... We didn't mind dressing up at night but wish it had been made more clearer on the website. Men must wear the correct shoes for the restaurants no open toed or crocks or tennis type shoes. Women they were pretty easy on but make sure you dress correctly because it can be a lonnnnnng walk back to your room. The other reviewers are correct. If you can't or don't want to walk far this is not the resort for you. Yes they have golf carts but you may end of waiting a while for them. If I could suggest one more thing. The foyer area is very large and I wish they had an area where there was a designated "coffee shop". An open themed French Patisserie coffee shop would look fantastic there. Somewhere where you could sit inside with a pastry and a coffee and just chil. There was an outside bar that made coffee but take it inside and your back to paper cups. So in summary would we go back..... 50/50 but certainly with tons of bug spray and walking shoes.

We would definitely go back!

My husband and I stayed at the Valentin Imperial Maya to celebrate my 40th birthday. We arrived April 29, 2017 and stayed for six nights departing May 5. Our flights, transfers and hotel were booked through Vacation Express. I'll just speak to the hotel experience here. We traveled with my childhood friend (who was also celebrating a 40th birthday, just three days after me) and her husband. The trip from the Cancun airport is about 30 minutes if you don't have to stop anywhere else. Upon arrival we were greeted with champagne, a cool damp cloth, and offered heavy appetizers. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and the lobby was deserted so we didn't lounge long until we were escorted to checkin. My friend and I had emailed the hotel prior to arrival and they placed us in adjoining rooms in Building 5 on the ground floor. We didn't have a pass thru door between rooms but that was perfectly fine. Rooms were very nice and extremely clean. I enjoyed the toiletries and used the body wash, shampoo and lotion every day. The only complaint I have is that the sheets were old and pilled - one night we had great sheets but the others were rough and worn. Each day the room was cleaned and the towels replaced, the mini bar was restocked daily as well. There was also a turn-down service each night, if you miss that you dont' get a copy of the daily schedule for the next day - but you can find it by your building concierge each day. We got the cheapest but most basic room and did not upgrade anything. We had zero issues with noise being on the ground floor. It was very private with all the jungle and landscaping around the property. Building 5 is near the beach and the main pool! It really was a great location. Most of the restaurants except for Mar y Tierra are up toward the front of the property. Food was very good, the staff here spoils you to death. I cannot say enough about how wonderful all the staff are, no matter what their job may be. They work hard to keep the grounds perfect and the visitor happy. Be sure to tip everyone you interact with (including your housekeepers) because they bust their butts to give you a perfect experience. I've never been so spoiled at an all-inclusive before. Plenty of top shelf alcohol, drinks are as strong as you want them to be. Beach is absolutely incredible, make sure you spend some time out there. There are tons of chairs and plenty of palapas to get. Out at the beach they don't play the reserve and disappear game they do by the main pool - if you don't reserve chairs at the big pool by 8:30 AM then you're out of luck. Beach itself is wide with soft white sand, the water is crystal clear and we saw plenty of fish in the water around us. One end of the beach is rocky but the other side is soft and perfect for playing in. There are lifeguards on the beach during the day. People will walk up and down the beach selling cigars, jewelry and other souvenirs but if you politely decline they keep going. I never felt harassed like I have it other countries. Hotel never seemed crowded, even when the pool was hopping. The dress code for dinners is super strict - you will not get away with improper attire so be sure you read and understand what the requirements are before you go, especially men! You may have to wait if you arrive for dinner during the rush, but there are tons of things to do while you wait. Music and activities every night, excellent entertainment. It can be a lot of walking but it's a lovely property and worth it. If you don't want to walk you can call a golf cart to escort you around. We have been to Jamaica and Cozumel before, this was a much better experience than Secrets Aura Cozumel. The staff, food, property, and overall experience would cause us to go back again as soon as life permits.
