Our Opinion

Renovations have improved the Allegro Nuevo Vallarta which was starting to appear a bit old and run down. A new modern finish now adds to this authentically Mexican hotel. Many repeat clients love the hotel because the facilities are up to standard, the beach is amazing and the staff are the best! In the lobby, an entire wall is filled with letters from guests, saying what a great time they had and that they would return. There's no doubt about it, regardless of how old this hotel is, it never fails to please its guests.

The newly renovated Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta Resort on the Pacific coast offers the perfect blend of romance, tranquility and fun. Enjoy the vast beaches and lush scenery of Mexico's Bay of Banderas. Savour Mexican and Italian cuisine and feast on the hotel's impressive buffet. Golf enthusiasts can choose from one of three 18-hole golf courses located nearby. Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta Resort is the ideal destination for families and friends looking for a rejuvenating Mexican holiday!
Location: On one of the nicest beaches in Riviera Nayarit, 25 min to downtown Puerto Vallarta, 15 min from the airport.

Royal Club - not recommended

March 11-18 we stayed as Royal Club guests. Our room was beautiful, spacious and comfortable however we were very disappointed in the Royal Club dining experience. The food was average and service was very slow. Our main complaint would be the floor plan of the Royal Club dining area. There is a bar beside the dining tables and we saw many guests gather there and enjoy themselves very loudly with people dining right beside them. This was very annoying to anyone dining in the Royal Club. They need to partition off the bar area from the dining space. Overall the extra expense for Royal was not worth it at this location. As many people have indicated, staff are exceptional and we also enjoy this resort. I agree with the writer who said the buffet has the best food. We also thought the entertainment has really improved since our first visit ten years ago.

12 Days in March at the Occidental in PV

This place was fantastic. Very updated modern facilities, manicured grounds, very clean. The best layout of a resort I have seen for awhile, no stairs to trudge to the beach, everything was in very quick walking distance. Excellent food, service was outstanding. Staff were really really great everywhere, buffet, beach restaurant, pool bar, lobby bar and cleaning staff. We heard it was a time share resort but saw no evidence of this other than people staying there told us they were staying in a time share, and there was a pool we could not go into. But whatever. I'm really rather surprised at any bad reviews of this place. We had no evidence of bad service or bad food, or bad anything. I spoke to another couple from Alberta and the lady was complaining so much I told her that maybe the negativity was bringing more negativity into her life. She didn't like that. I feel sorry for her spouse. So here it is: ROOMS: We asked for a room on the ground floor as they have little patios and it’s so extremely convenient to get to everything. The Front desk clerk tried and after a few minutes of looking had no problem finding us a room that we preferred, and it was great. Good size bathrooms, nice size rooms with a fridge and coffee maker, table and a couple chairs. The fridge was stocked with water, cold pop and Corona daily, as well as nuts and orange juice. Some drawers for your clothes and a nice closet with a weird door that slid open so that you could see the person in the shower from the bedroom if you had the closet closed. We didn't get a King bed but you could push the two doubles together or cuddle. The beds were firm and super comfortable. Our Cleaning lady worked very hard, and always had our room done around 10:30 am. We were extremely happy with the location of this room, I would never have picked one up on the top floors. FOOD: Excellent. Never had anything I didn't like at the buffet, and the a la carte's were amazing. My favorite was the Italian. Japanese was really good as well as the Mexican. You could book the A la carte's all at once for the week and didn't have to get up at 7 am to fight for a spot. Nice. The little snack bar dealio and beach restaurant were a change from the buffet and were delicious. The beach restaurant had a menu that you ordered from, and chips and guacamole and homemade fresh salsa were brought to the table immediately when you arrived. Yum. BEACH: Very nice, never had to fight for a chair, and we usually didn't get out there till 10 ish. Beach service by Angelos (Angie) was fantastic and she just never stopped. She brought us drinks even when we didn't ask. (yes, we did tip) but still. It was excellent service out there. The pool bar guys were also excellent at serving us. The lobby bar staff would come and wait on you while you sat, which was nice, we didn't even really have to get up to the bar. (yes we tipped) OTHER STUFF: They had bikes that you could take out on your own after noon (before noon there were bike tours), and we biked to the Rui hotels from the Occidental a few times on a really nice bike path. Lots of activities going on all day - pool, yoga, Zumba, water polo, kayaking, paint lessons, etc…Wi-Fi - I knew that we had to pay for Wi-fi, (my sister stayed there last yr and there was no charge, my understanding is that it got bought out by Barcelo and no more free wi-fi.) Personally I think $12.00/device/day is pretty steep. However, you could go across the street to starbucks and get the wifi password off your receipt if you buy a coffee. We were there 12 days and the login and password did not change. The only thing I would like to see at the Occidental is that they offer CANADIAN TV Sports Channel in the lobby bar. There were a lot of Canadians there and they only had US programming. And the Oilers are in the playoffs! Otherwise, all around this resort was great. Great Staff, great service, great food, great location. I would return for sure.

Relaxed and enjoyable stay

Stayed March 12-19. 4th floor ocean view not far from stairs straight down to access pool, beach and buffet. Our second time to puerto Vallarta. Very clean and quiet. Beautiful beach that's great for long walks. Enjoyed the food at buffet with lots of selection. Loved breakfast with crepes station and lots of fresh fruit. Chips with fresh guacamole and salsa at the beach restaurant. Would've liked to take food to beach chair, but can't take food out of restaurant. Loved the a la cartes. Make sure to reserve right away. They fill quickly. Have to specify for Japanese restaurant to eat at grill where chef prepares food or separate table ordering off menu. Also loved getting cappuccinos and iced coffees at lobby bar from Carlos. They offer free bike tours every morning to zoo, harbour and the hotel strip. I enjoyed all 3. One of my favourite things was the mariachi band Friday night. They were awesome. I really missed having a balcony. First time without in 6 years, and there was no hot tub except for royal level there was 2 and they never seemed to be used. I found air conditioning very cold at night. Can't control it. I would go back to this resort.

Beautiful beach and boulevard for walking.Hotel is in an excellent location.

Loved the hotel-would give it a 4.5/5. Only negative aspect is that hotel does not have balconies. We missed not able to sit out to have our coffee in the morning or watch the sun set.Our room was very clean and the service was wonderful. Our fridge was stocked daily with water and beer along with snacks. We paid extra for the Royal Club and really enjoyed all the benefits. We found Gerardo the Manager of the Royal Club very helpful. The specialty restaurants were excellent. We did not use the buffet for our dinner at all, so being Royal Club members helped us go to the specialty restaurants more than once. The bar servers were excellent as well. We were there only for a week and hated to leave. The Royal Club pool was great-padded loungers, not busy-always easy to find shade and quieter than the other pools. Vera from Winnipeg.

There have been some changes.

I want to start by saying that this is a wonderful hotel in a wonderful location with a wonderful staff. We were glad we came back. I'll give you my pros and cons. The place is all-inclusive so you can put your wallet (and your watch) in the room safe and just have a good time. There is a tendency to overindulge at first so control yourself and STAY HYDRATED! or you will miss the fun.I found the hotel to be scrupulously clean and well maintained. There is a huge staffand they are conscientious, helpful and pleasant. Very hospitable.Last year I led my review with ,"They have an adult pool!" This was important to me because I am well past my child raising years and look for quiet relaxation in my vacation. The adult pool is no more. It has become the "members only" pool for people who have bought in. The pros; it has it's own bar, The cons; noisy, splashy kids. We prayed for nap time. There was also a clash between parents and a lady who brought her own music which was, well, off-color some times with language you don't want small children to ask you about. The food in the buffet restaurant is very good and quite varied. There is a small section just for kids who are picky eaters and won't try new things. There are also specialty restaurants within the hotel which require reservations but are part of the all-inclusive deal.I met a lot of really nice people at the pool where conversations start with where are you from and where have you been?I stayed in two different rooms this time and liked the downscale one better. The more expensive room had a lot of luxury perks we didn't have much use for (a microwave at an all-inclusive?) What for? It also had a bath/shower setup which was a deathtrap for old ladies. Often as not I did the splits getting out of the wet tub after a shower. And then there was the air conditioning. Too hot without it and too cold with it. Getting up all night to turn it on or off. Couldn't sleep with the windows open, no screens. And the bathroom sink fixture was cracked all the way across. We had no such problems when we moved to the cheaper room. We had a walk-in shower, too.Unexpected special attractions: there is a man who comes around every day with a falcon which flies free around the grounds to discourage smaller birds from being a nuisance in many ways. He doesn't kill the other birds. He just makes his presence felt. It works. Also, there is a combination hospital/casino across the street which I think is an awfully unique approach to funding health care. All in all this is an excellent hotel and we enjoyed our time here.
