Our Opinion

Renovations have improved the Allegro Nuevo Vallarta which was starting to appear a bit old and run down. A new modern finish now adds to this authentically Mexican hotel. Many repeat clients love the hotel because the facilities are up to standard, the beach is amazing and the staff are the best! In the lobby, an entire wall is filled with letters from guests, saying what a great time they had and that they would return. There's no doubt about it, regardless of how old this hotel is, it never fails to please its guests.

The newly renovated Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta Resort on the Pacific coast offers the perfect blend of romance, tranquility and fun. Enjoy the vast beaches and lush scenery of Mexico's Bay of Banderas. Savour Mexican and Italian cuisine and feast on the hotel's impressive buffet. Golf enthusiasts can choose from one of three 18-hole golf courses located nearby. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

We stayed at the Occidentals from June 3 to June 10. We have stayed at several resorts previously like Barcelo, Iberostar, Secrets and Playa Resorts. This resort was below our usual price point, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The area where the resort is located is very nice. It is surrounded by upscale condo's, golf clubs and other resorts. There is a small mall across the street that has a pharmacy and market. The resort lobby nice when you walk in. It is very open and a nice breeze comes through from the beach side. It's very nice, but not super fancy, and there is not drink reception as some other resorts have. There are two check-in desks (two actual desks) and It can get pretty busy. We didn't upgrade to Royal level and they gave us a First Club room on the fifth floor. I still don't understand the difference between Royal Club and First Club but regardless, I was told that we didn't have access to First Club perks. The room was on the fifth floor on the south side, directly above the outdoor entertainment stage. If you want to get some sleep for an early rise, this area is not ideal. It is loud at night when the show is going on. The best way I can describe the room is nice but basic. It is set up similar to a hotel room except for a strange glass window that serves as part of the wall between the bedroom and shower. I thought it was cool watching my wife shower until a little later. I had my grim awakening while sitting on the toilet. My wife thought it would be funny to watch me while she was laying on the bed. Not cool! We've been married a long time but bathroom business time should be off limits. So yeah, it was hard to concentrate and I had to hang towels over the shower door to have my precious privacy. The worst part was the bed. If you think sleeping on a slab of concrete is bliss you will absolutely love it. My wife asked for a topper and they were awesome and brought one up promptly. I then became pretty embarrassed when she called and asked for two more. I'm glad she did because, with three toppers, the bed was only slightly uncomfortable. I hope no one else needed toppers because we probably used them all. We sleep on a queen at home and this bed had to be a custom extra wide King (I don't mean this as a negative) because I think I did four or five barrel rolls to get over to her side to cuddle. I was exhausted. The room was clean and everything else was fine except for a light smell of sewage coming from the bathroom (as noted in other reviews). So yeah, the room was similar to a hotel room (the photo on their site must be a Royal Club room) and was not as nice or fancy as the other resorts we have stayed at. But it was clean and appeared to be well maintained.Oh, one other thing about the rooms. There are no balconies for the standard rooms. Not a dealbreaker by any means, but I missed waking up and sitting on the balcony with a cup of coffee or having a door to open for fresh air. Before I sound even more negative, let me say that overall I enjoyed my stay, but I'll get to that later. Now back to my review. The food was absolutely horrible. Very bad. The worst I have ever had in any all inclusive resort. The buffet food was either saturated with salt, or bland. The selection was pretty awful and my wife did not have many options as she has a gluten allergy. The service at the buffet during dinner was horrible. A couple times we never had anyone come to our table for drinks. We went up to the server area to pour our own several times. The servers stared at us, but no one offered to help and we still had no one come to our table. I did like the breakfast selection but the lunch quality was similar to the dinner. Table service was better in the morning and afternoon. The poolside snack/lunch place, that doubles as the Mexican restaurant, was pretty good. We ended up eating most of our lunches there. We tried the Mexican restaurant and the Italian restaurant. The Mexican was good and the Italian was okay. The Italian restaurant brings a cheese bread to your table to enjoy while waiting for your food. It was the most magical cheese bread I have ever had and I asked for a second. Even though my wife couldn't eat any, I thought it was my duty to tell her how delicious it was. I am sure she appreciated the opportunity to live vicariously through me as I completely devoured both single-handedly. I was disappointed with the chicken pasta I got. It was very bland and I saw the same thing at the buffet the next night. We didn't spend any time at the pool so I can't comment about it or the activities. The pool area is pretty small and there are no areas to relax and get away from the music. We spent our time on the beach which was the nicest beach area of any resort we have been at. Clean, plenty of chairs, good drink service and nicely spaced out palm trees. The beach is also great to walk either way. Julio, the beach drink server, was excellent. A genuinely nice guy who appreciated tips but was very professional about it. I got the feeling that he would have been a nice guy with prompt service regardless of if we were tipping or not. I'm not sure how he did it, but I would see him checking on everyone often, and he would even bring my wife ice to freshen her drink without her asking. A hard worker who looks like he enjoys his job and is focused on doing it well. I'm not sure how he is not in a management position or something. We did some boogie boarding, which they provide for free, and had a great time. We only went to two shows. The theater is outside and is a lot smaller than what we are used to. The resort, in general, is smaller and more intimate which can be good and bad. The Michale Jackson show was the best one I have ever seen. Whoever is "Michael Jackson" is amazing. He looked just like him from where we were sitting and I swear he Michael Jackson's better than Michael Jackson. No joke, you wouldn't understand unless you see it in person. I would pay money to see that show again. We went to the Karaoke show and it was fun, but it was entirely in Spanish. This resort seemed more like a locals place and we didn't see many fellow light skinned people with sunburns. It was hard to follow, but we enjoyed it anyway. More incentive for us to work on our Spanish for next time. I also want to thank Carlos in the lobby bar for multiple reasons. My wife left her iPhone 6 next to the coffee station on the bar one morning. An hour later she realized it and we looked all over for it. The wifi was down (more later) and I had no way to call it or use the "find my iPhone" feature. She went downstairs and talked to Carlos. He had turned it into security and she got it back. I have heard horror stories about phones and such going missing at resorts. Losing her phone, and the photos it contained) would have been a huge blow to our trip. Getting that phone back, under those circumstances, was huge. We gave Carlos a pretty nice reward and he didn't want to take it until we insisted. He told us he was just doing his job and was really happy we got it back. Just a classy nice guy. A few days later, I asked Carlos for suggestions about where we should go to tour. After telling him what we were looking for, he hooked us up with his friend "Nacho", one of the taxi drivers contracted by the resort. Nacho gave us a special price, which was really low, to do a private 2-3 hour tour. He knew what we had wanted and first showed us around the area around the resort in Nuevo Vallarta. He showed us neighborhoods in the area, was awesome about taking us to locations to take photos of us, and took us to a nearby area where there are a small assortment of animals in a type of small zoo park. There is a leopard there that will lick your hand if you put your hand up to the fence (but don't stick your hands or fingers in). He then took us to Bucerias and let us walk around while he waited in the car for an hour. Afterward, he drove us around for a tour into the backcountry, showed us some sights, gave us some photo opportunities, and then let us see Valle De Banderas where he was born. It was a small historic village with a 150-year-old church. We took photos and then he took us to Chepe's, a nice roadside restaurant where they cook over an open fire. He took care of everything and we had the most delicious BBQ fish I have ever had. Nacho was so proud of everything and seemed very interested in showing us real Mexico and explaining how life is there. He even showed us Carlo's house. Four hours later we got back to the resort. Nacho had been so busy showing us around, he lost track of time. We gave him over double what he had asked and I hoped that it was enough because it was better than any tour or excursion we had ever done. It will always be one of our favorite memories. Thank you Carlos and Nacho for making our trip so special!Final thoughts. I paid $36 for five-day pass for Wifi. The second day, the wifi, room phones, and TV went down. It was down almost the entire stay. When we checked out, I asked for a refund. They told me I needed my original receipt to get a refund. I couldn't believe that they needed a receipt they had given me 6 days previously. I was told they couldn't just look it up on our account and just like a store, they needed a receipt to do a refund. Really? Luckily I found it crumpled up in one of our bags which we had to take apart in the lobby. Instead of refunding the entire thing for the inconvenience, they still charged me $12 for the first day of use. I couldn't believe they nickel and dimed me after not being able to use wifi, telephone or TV almost the entire stay. Some of the other guests seemed very rude during our stay. I won't go into details since my post is so long, but I honestly felt like we were looked down upon because we didn't speak Spanish, or maybe because we were American. Maybe it has something to do with the perception of current politics. I've never had that feeling before while visiting Mexico but I definitely got a bad vibe from other guests and a few (very few) of the staff. Half of the staff didn't speak fluent English (our fault for not visiting Mexico and not speaking much Spanish), and it very well could have been partly a language issue.Finally- We had a good time regardless of any negatives we encountered. The resort would be a good value for the price but they just need to work on dinner buffet service and the quality of food. Although I am very tempted to return, just so we can say hello to Carlos, Julio, and Nacho, we will want to pay a little more to stay somewhere else next time.

Absolutely amazing experience

The resort is beautiful and clean, the staff are welcoming and generous, and the food and drinks are amazing - what more could you ask for in a resort. Incredible experience, and would definitely go back. Special thanks to Carlos, Nadia, Kristen, Benjamin, Jesus, Erik, and Kristal!! You all were so kind and wonderful, and really made our stay that much more memorable.

Excellent place for the cost of the stay

Very clean affordable place. Food choices could have been better in the buffet as we love Mexican cuisine. No balcony in our room which was odd for a ocean view. Loves that you could take kayaks out or boogyboarding. Clean and all the staff were exceptional! Thank you

First, I would like to thank every single staff memeber. They were super gracious and very nice, everyday we got a "good morning" "good afternoon" and "good evening." My husband upgraded us to Royal Level and it a great move. Royal Level service was impeccable! The private bar tender Agustin L was very attentive, even with the heat, he was go go go. Very hard working staff! Highly recommend You do the scubba diving with Ernesto! Memories we will never forget!
