Holiday Inn Panama Canal
- What's Included
The hotel is located in a good spot if you want to be detached from pretty much everything. Although you can see the locks....it is not feasible to walk to them. That being said..it is conveniently located to the local bus stops. And I would truly recommend taking one of the very local buses during rush hour...if for nothing else for an adrenaline rush and and experience of a lifetime driving during rush hour!
It is a good hotel, however, the location is not so good. In my case, I had to go to Panamá Channel for work, so it was fine. You need to rent a car, taxi, or Uber to move around. Even for lunch or dinner, you have no choice: Hotel restaurant.
We visited this hotel firstly as part of an exodus tour group and then remained an extra three nights as a couple. Our stay got off to a terrible start in that our first group meal was a disaster. We waited 1 hour for a drink and then over the course of the next hour the food arrived sporadically. My meal clearly forgotten about was delivered after two hours after the other 16 members of my party had finished eating. They all cheered when it arrived and I had to endure eating when everyone had finished. This is the event my friend referred to previously on this site. Not one apology or explanation.I waited half an hour for the bill so that I could join my party at the Irish pub next door. The bill didn't arrive so we left after telling the waiter. On return an hour later we presented ourselves at the bar to sort the bill. The duty manager was called and he was the most arrogant ignorant and useless excuse I have ever endured. Because at check in they had forgotten to take a credit card copy this useless idiot seemed to deem that as our fault.Anyway because of this I would never return or recommend the hotel as some of the miserable staff are ignorant imbeciles. However there are just as many good friendly staff to compensate. The rooms were good and clean and an acceptable standard.
My husband and I had booked a 5-day stay, but left early because of a lot of issues. I am a Spire Elite member and booked on my corporate rate. According to the IHG website when I booked the room, the rate included breakfast, as is typical. It seemed like a good value, and the reviews mention that it is supposed to be a quiet hotel. However, we had nothing but issues from the moment we checked in. When I checked in, the front desk rep (Anisha) said breakfast wasn't included, but I pulled up the website on my iPad and proved to her that it was indeed included. She said that other people have been having the same discrepancy. She requested that I send her a screenshot then agreed that breakfast would be included for my stay. Also, I asked for a quiet room. She assigned a room on the top floor facing the jungle (not facing the Panama Canal, where you can hear the traffic and train noises). That was fine, except the room was also next to a service elevator, where the staff continuously went in and out, slamming doors and making lots of noise (e.g., talking loudly and rolling carts over the hard tile floors). When we arrived in our room, we noticed the air conditioning system was extremely loud. We called downstairs, and despite the heavy static on the phone, I was able to ask for maintenance to fix it. Maintenance came and said that they would need to "get some equipment." However, they never came back. On the 3rd day, we complained about the loud A/C again because we weren't able to sleep for 2 nights because it. They sent maintenance again, and this time they replaced the A/C unit. We could clearly see that the old one was rusted and had fallen apart, so at least this was fixed now. However, once the A/C was fixed, we then heard animals (I believe howler monkeys) howling throughout the night, which also woke us up.Other issues included:- Often no A/C in the common areas- With no notice, our water was shut off for several hours. Afterwards, the water was brown.- The food quality via room service and dinner was awful. There were no options for a vegetarian (me), and my husband's new York strip was fatty, VERY salty, and overcooked. They had a couple of vegetarian items at the deli, but they were poor quality too (I actually became ill because of it). - Breakfast quality was poor. The fruit was often frozen in the middle, and the items available were mostly just salty, fatty meats- Terrible service at breakfast; I had to flag someone down every morning just to get a glass of water, and everyone who worked there seemed miserable,- The room was dirty (e.g., dried blood on walls, stains on sheets, jewelry beads and hair on the floor). When housekeeping came in, they did a less than thorough job and even missed emptying one of the full trashcans. - The water temperature of the shower & sink was barely lukewarm.- There is only one nearby decent restaurant (La Taberna), and that also had limited vegetarian items, and again their expensive steak was fatty and salty (and they had no steak knives). All other restaurants were at least a 20 minute walk away, except for a filthy "Irish" pub across the street. On the 4th day, at the end of breakfast, we were told breakfast wasn't free. I said it was free, and they escorted me to the front desk. I spoke with Jonathan who again said breakfast was not free for me. I said I had already proven breakfast was included and was told it was, so I should not have to pay for my breakfast. He said that Anisha (who checked me in) was wrong and that my breakfast was not included. I asked to speak to a manager, Dioris, who agreed that I wouldn't have to pay for previous breakfasts, but going forward that are no longer free... despite what the IHG web site said. At that point, I checked out of the hotel immediately. What an inconvenience to have to book a different hotel on such short notice! After nothing but issues, and now this issue of "we're changing our mind... we don't think breakfast should be included in your rate, even though the IHG website said it was included" I was completely fed up. Obviously I will never stay at this hotel again. For the same general price, I recommend higher quality, quiet hotels such as the Aloft. For a bit more, I have also greatly enjoyed the Sheraton, Waldorf and the Hilton Panama.
Just off the Miraflores locks a little lonely, not much to do without a car.Very friendly and helpful staff.Clean rooms, comfy bed and good shower.Small pool.Non smoking hotel like all hotels in Panama.Small bar and good food at reasonable prices.Take a room with even numbers for Canal view
