OverviewDiscover complete rejuvenation at this natural refuge, where serene beaches meet lush rainforestsjust a short drive from Panama City.
We spent 5 days here with a large group so I am unable to comment specifically regarding restaurant meals other than room service and the main restaurant in the lobby where we had brunch. The resort is situated in a lovely setting with 4 large swimming pools and a narrow beach which overlooks the Pacific Ocean. The hotel has a fresh, clean, appearance which was enhanced by guest rooms that have been recently renovated. The King room in which we stayed was large and had a modern bathroom. Other amenities are a refrigerator and excellent Wi-Fi service. We only ordered room service one evening (pizza), which was delivered promptly and was very tasty. Other than an excellent brunch in the large lobby restaurant, all our meals were provided by our group's host. Our stay was very comfortable and relaxing. Unfortunately, there is no real beach. At low tide the ocean recedes and leaves only a muddy sea bottom. If a beach experience is key to your vacation, the WPB is probably not your best choice. However, if you are happy relaxing by several very large swimming pools, you will not miss the beach experience- at all! The pool setting is wonderful and the Pacific ocean acts as your backdrop as you as you swim or lounge. This resort is not situated on a golf course. A decent (not championship) course is located approximately 30 minutes away.WPB is a solid no-apology 3 star resort that families, couples and business travelers will most surely enjoy!
We stayed here for three nights as a change from our city hotel, The grounds were nice and overall property was well maintained and clean. The staff were professional and courteous. The restaurants were fantastic and the offering was vast. We purchased the all inclusive option for one day and did not find its worth. The breakfast offerings were weak, maybe because of the time of year and hotels occupancy rate. But overall was a great place maybe a little high cost for offering but we enjoyed our stay
The website looks lovely, with the typical beach pictures you often get in these types of resorts. What they don't point out is the dilapidated state of the property and the photo angles used to gloss over some of the more unsightly parts of the hotel. While I came here for a business conference and not for the beach, a quick stroll around the pool and beach area, even on a Sunday, tells you everything you need to know -- lifeless pool scene, lack of adequate sandy beach (yes, there technically is a beach, but it's narrow, dirty and not picturesque). The restaurant at beach level also leaves a lot to be desired. The main breakfast buffet was quite good however, and the rooms were decent, modern, but lifeless.
My husband and I stayed here after our original hotel (Secrets Playa Bonita, located right next door to the Westin) closed and the Westin took us in. We've stayed at 7 Secret resorts in Mexico and were a little apprehensive about staying at a new hotel brand in a country we hadn't been to. There were a lot of reviews that complain about the all inclusive of the hotel so I was worried. There was nothing to worry about. Everything they said was included, was included and we had no issues on transferring over. There were a few pros and cons and suggestions on what they should do to improve the place. The rooms were very clean and seemed to be updated. The a/c made an awful noise when it turned on, but thankfully both me and my husband sleep through anything. The amenities included with the hotel were not replaced as they were used. I had to request more conditioner because they never replaced it and one day they didn't give us more coffee (we made a pot every morning). I also used the lotion and they never replaced that as well for the whole week. Our package came with a free mini fridge that was filled on Wednesday (we arrived Sunday). They never came back to fill it either. The room lights were only on if you had your key card in the slot by the door - great way to save electricity! The balcony was small, but had two chairs and a table to lounge out on. The pool area was great - there were a number of pools with different depths. The large pool was about 5 feet deep which was nice. They had people in the pool cleaning it a lot, but I never saw them go through with a vacuum. They need to do something about all of the leaves/debris that's accumulating on the bottom of the pool. The pool temp was fairly cold, which was welcome after being out in such intense heat. We've been to resorts where the water is so hot that it isn't refreshing. The hotel was very empty for the first couple days until a conference showed up. This meant some things weren't open, which was fine since there weren't a lot of us there. The pool service was excellent. We barely finished our drinks when a server would approach us to offer us more drinks. The drinks at the hotel were made stronger than other all inclusives we've stayed at. There wasn't a lot of options for meals. Breakfast was a standard buffet with freshly made omelettes. For lunch they always had a buffet and an a la cart. We chose the a la cart each day finding it a welcome break after sitting in the sun all day. The Starfish was the restaurant available which we went to for dinner one night and found out that the same menu was used for lunch and dinner. We were disappointed at that since the only other dinner restaurant open for the first half of the week was the Terra Fuego (steak and fish place). Terra Fuego was excellent, but it really only offered red meat and fish. Finally towards the end of the week Asiana opened which gave us the option for sushi and thai dishes. The sushi was good, but there was nothing too impressive with the rest of the menu. The meals at the Westin were full sized instead of like a normal all inclusive where everything is smaller. Just be aware because two courses is a lot of food. The service throughout the resort was really good. All of the employees wanted to greet you and offer any help. We had a lifeguard offer to get us fresh towels when he saw us trying to sun dry them. They all just went a little above and beyond to help. Another great thing about the resort is they weren't trying to up sell or get you to try a timeshare. The Secrets brand has gotten a little worse with that over the years. At one resort in order to get a table to see a show you had to buy a $50 bottle of wine. Here, everything was included. One con was the towel situation. You get a towel card and you get one towel each at a time. You have to get your card back by returning your towel or you can get charged a $25 fee. It's nice that they're being green, but it was a little frustrating to only have one towel especially because they use wicker chairs (no padding on them) so you really needed a towel to cover from digging the wicker into your skin and another one to support your back.Overall, we enjoyed the Westin. We got a great price on Secrets that transferred over to the Westin. I'm not sure what the package we got actually cost at the Westin. We would definitely stay at an all inclusive Westin again for the right price.
The Westin Playa Bonita is a Beautiful Resort, with Excellent food, Service and spacious Rooms. We had an event over the course of four days and the staff was friendly, attentive, and happy to severe their guest. A special thanks to Joyce Mines our event coordinator who made sure everything went smoothly. From reservations adjustments, decorations, staging, food menu's etc. She did an excellent job. I will tell everyone about Panama and to stay at the Playa Bonita. We had a great time. Sincerely Victor Banks
