This is the hotel for a peaceful and spoiled break. Lots of positives, but couple of areas for improvement. Firstly the room, we had the ocean suite which overlooks the beach with great views out to sea. For us this was perfect, we are not great sun soakers so the ability to sit on the patio outside the room in shade and privacy watching all the activity was ideal. Not for us the grabbing the sun loungers early, yes it does go on as we saw and heard though why I cannot understand. As the management have said when commenting on previous reviews there are plenty of sun loungers on the beach, set in pairs, with a bamboo umbrella. For some reason most people seemed to want to be on the beach on the North side of the restaurant, leaving the South quite empty. If you have one of the bungalows, most of the accommodation, then they are spread out in in the large and very pleasant gardens, but varying distances from the beach. The pool, more central to the property, is also very enjoyable with a swim up bar though in reality, as it is help yourself, most people get drinks and sit on the loungers. The water sports team were efficient and safety conscious. The snorkelling, kayaking and sailing were all good fun. The sea was a great temperature for swimming though beach shoes are recommended for swimming due to the reefs with a large number of sea urchins. The food was very good with a surprisingly large selection given there are only 30 rooms. The menu was different for each of our seven days and the accompanying wines also changed. We had two BBQ lunches and one BBQ dinner all very good, prawns excellent. There was different musical entertainment every evening which added to the atmosphere. The Monday evening champagne cocktail reception was a bit of a dressing up occasion though generally a relaxed atmosphere. Clearly, a lot of returning customers the majority of whom, while we were there, were British. The staff overall were very friendly though the Head Waiter seemed to have some favourites when it came to seating and showed displeasure when we asked to be moved.Areas we thought could be improved. The gym – I don’t suppose many guests will use this, but for the price of the hotel one would expect some decent equipment, not pretty much the cheapest available. Some equipment wasn’t even working, do it properly or don’t bother. The cruise to the Pitons (most of the day) was via transfer from the beach in a small inflatable tender with worn and missing grab handles to a yacht designed for about 6. The transfer was difficult for some of the less agile guests and the boat far too small for the 10 guests and 3 crew on the trip. Getting below decks to access the washrooms was a real trial in the swell. I have researched the other Piton cruise offerings on the island and as far as I could see all were cheaper and used catamarans which offered more space and more stability. The Eastwinds tour seemed to be the most expensive for the least return, which compared poorly to their sunset cruise offering which was on a catamaran, 12 of us and plenty of room. Of course the Caribbean weather was fantastic which helped but, overall this is a great hotel for a relaxing holiday. The space and low number of guests, to us, was hugely better than the concrete equally expensive and overcrowded resorts.
It has been 6 years since we visited EW for the first time. We have had wonderful holiday on other Caribbean islands in the interval but EW was calling us back. We had read on TA about the new management and the enhancements, especially around the pool area and the bar, so travelled with high expectations.EW is a delight. Many of the staff we recognised and they even remembered us despite thousands of visitors in the interim. Debbie even remembered our lunchtime dining preferences, just amazing! The location of the hotel is just perfect in spite of the long drive from the airport, but that fatigue soon disappears when the warm welcome embraces us. Check in is done when we are ready, the first task is to settle us into our accommodation and make sure we are comfortable and know where key places are. Cool drinks in the fridge made unpacking a breeze and we were soon on our way to the bar and dinner. The location of the bar/restaurant surrounded by the beach and at the waters edge is so atmospheric at twilight and beyond. The bar team have no hesitation, they get you to feel the vibe immediately and make sure your preferences are remembered. Their weekly cocktail competition is a scream! The restaurant, table service in the evenings except barbecue nights, is elegant without the slightest hint of stuffiness. You hear more laughter than anything. The menus have interesting choices and even then if there is a tweak you want to make, they will try to accommodate you. Four courses, 3 choices on each plus an amuse Boucher to start and ice creams always available as an alternative to the menu choices. Evening entertainment is good and varied, catering for a wide range of tastes. Special mention to the Friday night band and to the young man who charms all of us when playing the grand piano. Lunchtime is buffet style and you can construct the meal of your choice (this may get smaller and smaller as your holiday develops as afternoon tea isn’t far away!). Breakfast is also a challenge to the weak willed, especially as Paula wields her whisk and pans. The gardens are a dream. Planting schemes, the medicinal use of plants and the bird life will keep you interested for hours. Special mention of Sylvanus the head gardener, what this man doesn’t know isn’t worth knowing! He even put a hummingbird feeder on our terrace as I was fascinated by them.I may have mentioned three names but there are many more. Every single member of staff goes out of their way to make your stay perfect. Nothing is too much trouble, in fact it is not trouble but an opportunity for them to leap into action. They all respect Judith, the conductor of this particular orchestra. The only tiny cloud during our stay was the shameful behaviour of a fellow guest but others have mentioned this and Judith’s response was measured and diplomatic. Every resort in the Caribbean will be jealous of the staff team at EW.I’m sorry if this review is overlong without any quibbles but if we felt something could be improved, we mentioned just the once and it was sorted. What more could one ask for?
We chose Eastwinds as the venue for our wedding after reading all of the glowing reports on Tripadvisor and are extremely happy to say it managed to exceed our already high expectations. As a couple, we have friends and family in many countries and so, to avoid the logistical nightmare of a 'big wedding', we went completely the other way and opted for something much more intimate - just the two of us. And intimate is what we got!! The accommodation, with its sunken shower, was stunning. The beach, with the pagoda where we exchanged our vows, was truly beautiful. The restaurant overlooking the ocean was fantastic. But, on reflection, it was the staff that made our stay at Eastwinds so special. Everybody was extremely friendly and really went that extra yard to make us feel welcome. Although it's slightly unfair to pick anybody out for special mention, we really must extend our thanks to Glenda, who assisted with all of the planning and helped made our 'big day' so memorable; to Sylvanus, the Head Gardner, who arranged our decorations so beautifully; and to Titus in the bar/restaurant who always made us feel so welcome. We are both well travelled and so are able to say with confidence that, as an intimate wedding venue, Eastwinds is the real deal.Olga and Michael
We are a young couple, in our early 30s, and arrived back from Eastwinds today - and are now definitely in a post-Eastwinds lull. We could go on and on about what makes Eastwinds so special - the beautiful gardens, stunning beach, relaxing ambience, clean and large rooms, fresh food and thought-out selection, etc. There are no particular highlights for us as it is hard to distinguish, but a few things that stand out include the cooking demonstration (really made us appreciate the knowledge, finesse and effort with a focus on fresh local ingredients), massage (Theresa obviously has an instinct - a downside is that her massages can get addictive!), pilates and yoga (highlighted the real route of issues we've both been to figure out with tailored exercises), etc. However, what really make this place so special has to be the people, both the guests and the staff. Nothing was ever too much effort for the staff - they all go out there way to meet your needs, organise ad hoc excursions at the drop of a hat, make sure you're always well fed and watered, talk about the local way of life, the gardens and the food - and always with a smile and a personal touch (e.g. knowing our names almost immediately). The guests also make this place special - there is very much a community atmosphere where everyone is happy to say hello and we certainly enjoyed many a laugh and interesting conversations. As with all elements to Eastwinds, the ambience is very relaxed and easy-going so you can join in as much or as little as you like. Completely agree with the earlier review - the downside to Eastwinds is that it is difficult not to go back! Hats off to Judith and the entire team.
I'm outraged at just reading a review titled "Hearty Croation Cooking"The strength of my outrage should be understood by knowing that I have never written a review before about any hotel, but after reading the review that I have mentioned I felt driven to defend my St Lucian family who I'm sure were nothing but polite to these people & provided extremely professional service as they always do to everyone. If they had said the hotel was quiet I could agree, but we love that as it gives us a chance to talk to the exceptionally friendly staff & learn about the St Lucian culture whilst being served with the upmost professionalism, it allows us to sit on a table with clean tablecloths, polished cutlery & sparkling glasses the like of which you would only experience in a Michelin starred restaurant, many of which we have eaten in all over the World, it means you don't have to fight over a lounger or swim around others in the pool.We are repeat visitors who have returned many times with grand parents & teenagers alike, our sons girlfriend actually cried when she first arrived at East Winds & declared it to be Paradise! The staff & the managers are all without exception of the highest standard & make you feel pampered as soon as you arrive. If you want to really experience Paradise visit East Winds, If you want to visit fake Paradise go somewhere else. We can't wait to return again this year, thank you Judith & ALL of your team.
