Riu Palace St Martin

A perfect destination for travelers who want a few days of relaxation, beach and sun, offering tranquility and fun alike.
If you like the blue azure waters of the Caribbean the Riu in St Martin is not for you. Situated at a wide cove, the water is calm but cloudy. Nice view to the north of Anguilla. The resort was fully occupied resulting in a crowded beach and pool scene. We were packed in pretty tightly with the awful waking up at 6 a.m. to "save" a lounge chair / umbrella (you snooze, you lose). The staff is friendly and helpful but there is simply not enough of them. You need to search out a staff member for a glass of water, etc - not unusual to sit down for a meal and not have anyone offer you a beverage for ten minutes or more. The food was excellent, however - only dined at the buffet restaurants. The specialty restaurants require you to wait on line at approximately 6:30 pm to reserve for either the 6:30 or 8:30 seating. Despite trying twice to reserve for the later time slot, was always unsuccessful. The front desk is a disaster - old and tired looking, it is staffed by an inadequate number of personnel. Expect to wait an unacceptable length of time. Despite checking in at a reasonable hour (2:30 pm), we waited over 30 min to check in. The man behind the desk was a dour chap with a stained shirt (same shirt at the time we checked out). No smile. No warmth. No welcome beverage after a long journey. No bell staff to show us to our room or help with luggage.Once we got to the room (a suite on the marina canal) we noticed that there was no lounge furniture on the rear deck. Hoping to enjoy the quiet and canal view - we called the front desk having noticed that the other similar units had furniture. It took three days, daily phone calls, two visits to the front desk, and daily notes to housekeeping to have two chairs delivered. There are quite a few staff members who try their best. The food was better than average for an all inclusive. Unfortunately, that will be not be enough for us to return to this resort.
We spent our week continually commenting on how much we loved this place. The colours, the funky lobby, the friendly staff, our beautiful room overlooking the main gardens (third floor), the delicious food, the excellent bubbly, the gorgeous beach and pool. A two hour massage and facial in the spa was superb. Perfect weather. The breeze. I could go on. We were expecting a quiet scene and were so happy when the first thing we noticed was that almost everyone was reading. And that there was a bibliotheque near the pool. We were very impressed by the multilingual, gracious staff who tried everyday to make our experience the best it could be. Especially Fanny. This resort was a perfect fit for us. Yes, the trip over the mountain is a bit crazy and maybe this isn't the best choice for people expecting to do a lot of sightseeing because it is secluded. But this feature, for us, made it all that much more appealing. It was lovely to see families spending time together, couples relaxing and quite a few older couples feeling the love! You will find people who find fault with every resort. Traveling is an attitude! When you expect awesome, you find it. And we did. Thanks for a memorable holiday in paradise.
We went here for our 30th wedding anniversary. Everything about the place was outstanding. Stunning location, excellent amenities, very good food (superb, for an all-inclusive). Staff was extremely friendly and helpful, room was spacious and immaculate, bed was extremely comfortable, beach was lovely. Only criticisms are very minor -- front desk had trouble providing us with an extra room key, road to hotel is a bit hair-raising in places and could use an upgrade, hotel is in a location that is fairly remote to most other attractions on the island. Overall just a terrific experience. I stayed at two other Riu Palace hotels and this one is easily the best of the three.
We like the Riu Palace hotels and weren't disappointed here. It is somewhat remote which makes it very quiet and peaceful. If you want nightlife and a town, it's not for you. The beach is amazing, beautifully sandy and perfect for those with kids. The pool looked very nice as well, we are beach people and don't use pools. And, bonus, no (gross) swim up bar where you see people sitting for hours and not getting out, if you get my drift. The buffet restaurants had great variety and were very good. Making an ice cream cone after lunch at the beach every day was perfect. Staff there are exceedingly pleasant. Would definitely go back. The nightly entertainment could use some improvement, it was pretty lame. For me, the only thing missing was an in house casino. Took a cab into Grand Case for dinner one night, which was fabulous, if you go try Oceans 82.
This is a really nice hotel for people who want to relax in a beautiful location. The place is small and in a nice secluded area, away from the casinos and hustle of the Dutch Side. If you want to take it easy and just enjoy the pool or beach this is the place for you. It is also really nice for families with small kids. It is in the middle of being transformed to the Riu standard, so it isn't perfect, but they are working on it. New facilities are beautiful, and the older ones are nice and clean. The staff are wonderful. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. Special thanks to Mimi (!) and Mary, who were so quick and kind when my husband had a medical issue at the Steak House. They and the Assistant Manager were amazing. Rolinda - who dispenses the other kind of "medicine" from her cart by the pool was so much fun and very patient with all of us obnoxious tourists! Thanks also to Pepe at the lobby bar for looking after us so well, and to Ivan for having fun with us at show time! The food at the buffet was always very good - there is lots of choice and excellent quality. We had a great time!
