My wife and I decided stayed here from 1/07/17 - 1/15/17. I am 62 years old and my wife is a few years younger. I am a retired Court Officer and College Professor. We have been to several all-inclusive resorts over the years, spending at least a week over the past 17 years at the Tamarijn Aruba Beach Resort. Because we plan to again return to Aruba later this year, we decided to try somewhere different. Overall, we were pleasantly surprised. The resort is somewhat small, which has its' advantages in that you are not walking all over the place all day. The focal point appeared to be around the main pool area (infinity pool) that abuts a small but useable beach. As usual, people do get up early to stake their claim to umbrellas and chairs on the beach and at the pool, but even if you're late arriving, there always appeared to be something available. We enjoyed meeting different people throughout the week while sitting in the hot tub or in the pool. This usually led to more socializing after dinner while enjoying the nightly entertainment. The resort is "Adult Only" which was exactly what we were looking for. The guest varied from groups of singles and couples in their 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's. Although this is an all-inclusive resort, it didn't appear that many people were overly imbibing. The resort is within a 10 minute walk to the city of Phillipsburg where there are a lot of shops and restaurants. While we were there, we were given the opportunity to dine at the buffet or 2 ala carte restaurants on the premises. This included an outdoor restaurant where the meals were served while cooking on a hot stone and you determine when you are ready to eat. This restaurant was superb. The other indoor restaurant was also very good and we ate there often. Always very good food with amazing service. Bar service was also fabulous. As long as you have patience and realize that sometimes it gets busy and you need to wait your turn. I tipped alittle here and there but I really don't believe it made a difference in the service. The resort has a small gym with a single nautilus, and bench, a few fit balls, three treadmills and a dumbbell rack to 50 lbs. It worked and was enough for me while on vacation. There is an activities desk to book tours and day trips/ cruises. There is also a Spa. I did get a 55 minute massage that was very good for $110. We booked this trip thru Expedia, upgraded to a Grand Ocean View Room, and paid under $3,300 that included R/T direct flights from the NYC area. Although we only slept in the room, it appears larger than we are used to at the Tamarijn Aruba Beach Resort. As stated in other reviews, they might be considered dated, but we felt the rooms were clean and comfortable. The A/C operated well. No bugs or ants. We had a small problem with the mechanism in the toilet and when mentioned to housekeeping, it was taken care of immediately. We took a few drives up to Grand Case and Marigot and other than the scooters that insist on passing on the center line of the road while in opposing traffic, we felt the island was safe and accommodating. If you have stayed at the Tamarijn Aruba Beach Resort and liked it, you will also like this place. If you are expecting a 5 star resort, this is not it. However, this is a very relaxing place where we felt we got what we paid for if not more. I have nothing to complain about. I will return.
I was hesitant to stay at the Sonesta because I saw a few negative reviews about the beach, the food, the location etc. But I am so glad we took a chance because our stay exceeded our expectations in all of these ways!!!!! The food was very good, especially at the two restaurants. Buffet food was decent for dinner, but you can't expect much from any buffet. The location is amazing, a quick 5 min beach walk to Philipsburg which is always so much fun during the day while the cruise ship tourists are there. We could never seem to leave the bars there sober! My boyfriend and I are both 20 years old and were by far the youngest people at this adults only resort but we still had a blast. The beach was amazing, much better than the sister resort at Maho. However, Maho does have good nightlife so a few nights we took a 15 minute cab ride over there. Other nights we stayed at the resort because they had amazing live bands, a DJ one night and karaoke another. Last but not least, the service at Sonesta Great Bay was incredible. Every morning we were greeted with a smile and everybody remembered our names. In particular, Cleopatra , the food and beverage manager was amazing!!!! She genuinely cared if we were enjoying our stay or not and was always there to answer questions for us. She is a hard worker and it paid off because she truly made our stay special. Alfred, the poolside entertainer was another very special worker who made every day and night fun! Thank you both and to every one else who made our stay fun and happy!!! Whether you are 20 like me or 50, this place is an all around good choice!
What do you usually remember about a vacation.... the service and the food. The Sonesta Great Bay Resort truly deserves a 5 star rating. The service by ALL members of the staff was exceptional. The General Manager was very visible and made sure daily to say hello and be sure our needs were met and we were having a good time. The chef and all his staff, again no less than a 5 star. The good was terrific. Every evening there was a different food theme. Kudos to the chef and his staff. I even witness the chef speaking to a guest and she was requesting a special item to be made for her (I assume maybe dietary needs) and he had no problem at all meeting her request. Germaine greated us daily with a warm smile and spoke to us like a family member. The nightly entertainment was great, from the show girls, the singers, etc. All the performers made you feel a part of the entertainment. The only entertainment I personally didn't like was Karoke, BUT many people obviously love it. So on that particular night, my husband and I went in to the very enjoyable casino on the property. Late at night after a few cocktails, we were hungry and Johnathan aka the Rock Man (because he cooks at the Lava Rock Restaurant on site-great experience cooking your own food on the lava rock) made us a delicious burger and fries and took the time to get to know us not because he had to but it was genuine his interest.Adrian made sure daily that we were happy on the beach and brought us our drinks. Adrian always has a happy smile and personality. You are able to walk right from the beach in to town and do lots of shopping all in walking distance. The beach has plenty of chairs and umbrellas. I would highly recommend and would return. The weather was perfect.
Just got back from one of the best vacations I have had at the Sonesta Great Bay Resort. Manager Alexander and his staff are very professional and friendly, always asking if you need anything. The food is very good at the Bay View, Piscatore and Water's Edge restaurants. No bookings required. The bars are great and no long waits for a drink. Rooms are standard, fridge is stocked with Coors Light or Miller Lite. Location is key, only 10 minute walk to Philipsburg the capital on the Dutch side. The sad part was it was only one week.We will definitely come back and this time for 2 weeks.Tom Z
