First Time in St. Maarten

I do wish the best for the residents of St. Maarten and I try to keep up on the progress of the island.I feel badly in my timing for this review but feel I must be honest to myself and the resort. This was my first visit to St. Maarten and I am in love with the island. It is beautiful and I enjoyed my two week stay there. I liked that the Sonesta Great Bay was a small and intimate resort. I like it when I don't have to walk for 10 minutes to reach the beach. However, I found my room at the Sonesta Great Bay old and outdated. Drawers and closet doors that stick or opened and closed noisely. Having three restaurants and a beach snack bar, while vacationing for two weeks, was a little monotonous, but not the fault of the resort at all. My favourite is the Lava Rock a la carte restaurant, where you get to cook your entree on a hot stone. Cool idea! At the start of our second week, the restaurant staff had a turnover. What a change in service. And not for the better. We were escorted throughout the entire buffet restaurant while the hostess tried to find an available table for us. We were seated at a table that was already occupied with guests that were at the buffet. We had to wait for a table to be cleaned before we could be seated. We waited and waited and waited for our drink order to be taken at breakfast and then were half way through our meal before we received it. Once, I had to go and get our drinks myself as our server seemed to have forgotten we were still there. And then there was the verbal argument that took place in the kitchen that everyone in the omelette line was witness to. The food at Sonesta was amazing! I enjoyed all the fish choices available, the omelette station for breakfast and the pasta station for dinner. My husband loved the curry meats they had and the grouper was out of this world. We give honorable mentions to Smiley (Johnathan) and Melissa for their great customer service. Johnathan was kind enough to take care of us even though we were not seated in his section. Our service was lacking and he saved the day by attending to our needs on more than one occasion. Melissa always greeted us with a smile and kind words. She remembered us and made us feel like she cared about us and our stay at the resort. The entertainment at the Sonesta Great Bay is the best I have seen in the Carribbean. They have an exceptional Michael Jackson tribute show. Seeing it at the sister resort Sonesta Maho Beach is a must. They are talented and work well together. A nice variety of singers, dancers, acrobats, and salsa performers. And there's a live band performing on the week-ends at the Great Bay. I hope this devasting castrophe that has struck St. Maarten will serve as an opportunity for the Sonesta resort chain to upgrade and improve their facilities for their future and returning guests.

My heart goes out to staff....

I was absolutely sickened to watch the CNN report from the hotel site this morning. I pray that everyone comes out of this tragedy and that the Sonesta rises from the ashes to be better than ever!The location of this property is amazing, However, the main structure was built in 1958. Fortunately, building codes have dramatically improved in the past 60 years. This site would be a fantastic spot for a true 5 star property such as a Hyatt Zilara or a Ritz Carlton. A more secure facility with a reinforced shelter area is truly what is called for. Simply repairing the damage to the existing structure would be insufficient at best. Again, our hopes and prayers go out to the Sonesta staff and other good people of St. Maartin!

A Laid-back Vacation Spot.

Had a fantastic time. The staff is really great. They treated us like family and took excellent care of us. Ms. Patricia in the Logo Shop was wonderful. She now holds a special place in my heart. Audie and Nicole and so many others were just fantastic. Chef Dave was great too. These folks are now my St. Maarten family. There were some missteps at the beginning of our stay but the staff worked to fix them. As for the facility itself, it's nice but it could use some updating. A number of our rooms didn't have the security bars/latches. That made me uncomfortable. I also think the entire facility needs to be non-smoking. As one who doesn't really like walking on tile with wet feet, I'd love to see carpet in the rooms. Also, a regular shuttle to Phillipsburg and the other Sonesta resorts on the island would be nice too. I know we visited during the slow season, but I'd like to see more daytime activities available. Amazing Birthday Trip

We had an amazing time at this resort!!! The staff was AMAZING and made my birthday everything and more. Shantel at hotel check in was very professional and helped us with our ocean front room. Rachel the food and beverage management team met our every need when it came to dining. I have no complaints about this resort all of the staff went above and beyond to meet our needs. We got lucky and were scheduled to leave two days before the hurricane. I send love and prayers to the staff while the hotel rebuilds during this time. You all were amazing!!!

Travelled in Feb 2017

I am a bit late writing a review, seems silly now that Irma has done so much damage to this lovely place and resort. Very much enjoyed the area and our vacation. Food and drinks were fantastic. But the place was in a major need of renovations!!! I hope they can rebuild and hope to come back again some day. Sending best wishes for the future. <3
