My husband and I (we’re in our late 20’s) stayed at this resort from May 21st-May 28th, 2017 for our Honeymoon! We booked the resort, flight, transfers, etc through Cheap Caribbean. Here are the things I think make a trip and my opinions of each:Check-In:We had to wait about 15 minutes in line, but a guy came around with champagne, so that was good. When we booked the resort, we chose “Grand Ocean View” which means Floors 4-7. When we checked in, the rep told us there were no rooms available in that section so we were a bit annoyed, but they upgraded us to a suite on the second floor on the other side of the main floors. We were a bit weary because we wanted a higher floor to get a better view, but the receptionist told us the room and view is even better so we decided to go check it out.The Room:We were in Room 262 at the end of the “apartments” side of the resort. Yep, the receptionist was right, the view was awesome! We were directly over top of the water and could hear the ocean lapping against the rocks. The room was a one bedroom suite with a tub/shower, kitchen/dining/living room area, and a king size bedroom. And we had not one, but TWO balconies! The appliances, furniture, and general décor were a bit outdated, but that’s not really something we are on vacation for. The bed was comfortable and I had plenty of space to unpack everything in my suitcase. It was very quiet on this end which was great, because we don’t like staying at a resort where you can hear everyone and everything in the halls or rooms next to you. The room was like our own little oasis away from everyone (which is pretty much what you want during your honeymoon)! My only complaint is I wish they gave more than 2 waters per day in the fridge. We had to keep going to the bars to get more every day. The Resort:This resort is on the smaller side compared to ones we have been to in Cancun, Punta Cana, etc but it makes for less walking and you can’t really get lost. There are two pools (one is infinity with a bar) at the front of the beach and one kind of hidden near where our room was. The grounds were kept clean. The Staff:Everyone we talked to was pleasant and polite. Our favorite person was the breakfast hostess, Melissa! She greeted us every morning and asked how our vacation was going and offered a lot of helpful suggestions for exploring the island. There was also a younger guy at the pool bar that made excellent drinks for us, but I can’t remember his name. Oh, and shout out to Nicole, who tirelessly gets everyone drinks on the beach – she’s awesome! The Food:There are three restaurants: the buffet, the waterfront area/Lava Rock, and Pescatore. I was pleasantly surprised by the buffet. The food choices changed every day and the food itself was excellent, lots of variety. They even have theme nights for dinner like French, Caribbean, BBQ, etc. We ate dinner at the Pescatore twice and it was great (4 course meal). I must say I was very disappointed in the “Lobster Mac and Cheese” – it only had 2-3 very tiny little morsels of lobster. Boo! The lava rock was a cool concept, although my fish stuck right to it and I had to scrape it off. Also, during lunch the waterfront area served pizza, burgers, salads, etc. Let me tell you about these chicken wings though…SO GOOD. They’re moist on the inside, perfectly seasoned, and crispy on the outside. I don’t know how you guys do it, but they are amazing! The waitress probably though we were crazy because we ordered plates of them and devoured every last bit, haha! The Beach:Beautiful! We had no issues getting a chair or umbrella. The sand is more coarse than I had imagined, but it gets more fine towards the water. There is a very slight decline once you get into the water, but nothing crazy. You can walk along the beach and be in Philipsburg after about 15 minutes. Overall a very beautiful and relaxing beach.Overall:I would definitely recommend Sonesta Great Bay. If you’re looking for a mega party resort this is not it, but if you’re looking for something relaxing, quiet, and friendly this is your place! The views are gorgeous, food is great, and people accommodating.
First impressions can be deceiving. Walking into the lobby of the Sonesta Great Bay, we were disappointed at first. The outward appearance of the place is not as lavish as other resorts we've been to. But that impression soon dissipated. The ocean view was beautiful. Nice beach, interesting activities such as yoga and early morning guided walks and a relaxing atmosphere. The food was a highlight - delicious with a good variety daily. The staff at the spa made each experience there so much more enjoyable. Kudos to Jardin, Audi and Stephanie! All restaurants on the property were open-air with spectacular views. We met many friendly, genuinely nice vacationers who were fun to visit with. Minor issues: housekeeping staff were very thorough but slow with getting our rooms cleaned on several days. A couple of issues of miscommunication and a cranky employee or two. All in all, we left the Sonesta happy that we chose it for our vacation destination and would gladly recommend it to others looking for a relaxing island experience.
Absolutely love the resort and staff. They are all extremely curtious and professional greeting my wife and I each day. Two of the staff in particular were outstanding going above and beyond. Esmond is fantastic and whatever he is being paid it isn't enough. The same can be said of Melissa at the Bay View restaurant. Thank you so much!
When we arrived we were a little concerned as we usually stay in larger properties. But once we were there, we really liked what we saw. The pool and beach were nice. To be honest, the beach sand is a bit coarser than most of the Caribbean beaches I have been too. But back to the property. The property is not new, but it does look like they have updated it recently. Our room was on the 6th floor facing the bay and was nice. The staff was friendly and helpful. We were close to the boardwalk and shops which was nice. The foods was average. I found the breakfast buffet to be good (fresh made omelates), but my wife thought if needed more fresh fruit. The luch buffet was ok, but not great. They also have a grill for burgers and pizza if that's your thing. The dinner was more problematic. The lava rockrestaurant was good, but the seafood one was not good at all. We chose to eat in town one night at the Holland House it was fantastic, but you will pay a bit extra for it ($150 for 2 with a couple drinks). All in all we had a really good time. The food was average, but I would recommend the property as a whole.
The good - Reception, Restaurant and Cleaning staff was excellent. Vicky from reception ensured we had everything we needed. Rachelle from the buffet was also lovely and very helpful. All the staff in the buffet restaurant was very helpful. Juliette, from the cleaning crew left our room impeccable every morning. We first git a room that we didn't like on the sixth floor and got switched by Landa and Vicky to one that was much better on the 7th floor.I loved having the pass for its sister hotel, Maho. Lived that bay.Breakfast was excellent. I'm still wondering what the reviewer that complained about lack of choices meant. With the exception of smoke salmon or asian breakfast, they had absolutely every food I can imagine for thhis meal. Fresh omelette station, fresh fruit, hot oatmeal, french toast, pancakes, bagels, cakes, etcDrinks at the bar could be requested with ok brands such as Absolut, Baccardi, CuervoBeach waiter and pool bar at Maho, both outstanding. The not so good - Guests totally smashed. Food in il Pescatori, the a la carte restaurant was terrible.Meals other than breakfast were not great at the buffet either. Unavailable beach/pool chairs. Daytime activities on the skinny side. Waiters at daytime restaurants in Maho. Lack of transportation to move between hotels. To be honest, this hotel is so overpriced for what they are offering. Think all inclusive for drinks (yes, some brands available), bad food (even for all inclusive) and no activities whatsoever (no animation team whatsoever so any classes are depending on if you are in luck or not)
