Great time at Sonesta Great Bay

My wife and I loved our stay at Sonesta Great Bay. The staff was very professional and friendly. We stayed on the second floor in an Ocean Front Junior Suite. The room far exceeded our expectations (and I set very high expectations). I would also like to note that the pool access and buffet restaurant as well as beach access is on the second floor. We chose Sonesta Great Bay because of its ideal location in Philipsburg. It is close to everything, without the overcrowded beach and noisy airplanes of Maho (Someone actually died at Maho Beach the first day we drove through it). Sonesta Great Bay's beach had more than enough activities to keep us busy for the week, but we did choose to explore the island several of the days that we were there. I do recommend renting a car to see the French side beaches; however, Sonesta Great Bay is the best option, especially if you are looking to stay at an all-inclusive resort.

Enjoyable Vacation!

We had a great time at the Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort! We visited early July, 2017, for a week. My first impressive upon arrival was great! I looked out to the ocean and it was beautiful! Esmond greeted us, carried our bags and got us registered pretty quickly. We weren't offered a champagne drink on arrival but my husband had already gone to the bar and got us a drink--no problem. We went to the 6th floor to see our room (don't use the teeny elevator--there is a nicer one) and the room was okay. As other reviews and pics, I knew what to expect. It isn't luxury but is clean and acceptable. I LOVED the balcony. I spent a lot of time on the balcony looking at the water. GREAT VIEW from 6th floor. Problems with the room... water pressure is poor. First day a pipe broke but in their defense, it was fixed by the end of our beach day. Still, don't expect a strong, hot shower--it isn't happening. Moisture level in room is high--you can't leave balcony door open to listen to ocean. If you do, the floor is a slipperty mess and moisture is everywhere. The bed was comfy, the drinks were nice. The door to bathroom and room were both hard to close--maybe due to moisture issues? Again, the room is dated but I had read and expected. As others posted, the sand is not a fine white but rather fine shells. I liked it. The water was pretty most days but after a storm--the seaweed was a mess. Two days we couldn't swim in the ocean. In addition, there is a canal type issue next to the resort. I called it a swamp but manager replied explaining it was clean and run off from mountains. Honestly, I thought it was nasty and we could see "things" swimming in there at night. We did see a couple of barracudas and a large sting ray on beach and I think that is what swims in the "swamp". Did make me a little nervous swimming in the ocean but I'd only go out when others were near. We thought the food was good. I mean, it's not top of the line--but there was always a good variety of food, lots of it, and a great staff. We ate at the seafood restaurant but if you wanted really good seafood, I think it was extra. We had a reservation for the lava rock restaurant but got rained out. Each evening they had some type of cookout and the bbq was great--especially the jerk sauce. The drinks are fine--again, as others wrote--they don't use fresh fruits--it is a mix for drinks--but they were good. The best part of the resort--the people! We enjoyed meeting and talking to RAUL. It was so nice! He worked in a variety of areas. The service by Angella in the restaurant was excellent and the bartender Rehanna was so sweet. Everyone works very hard to make your vacation the best. We enjoyed watching the cruise boats come in and out of the bay. We walked to the market once and I have never seen so many watch stores and jewelry stores. It was fun to look. I would walk the beach every morning and a few times felt uncomfortable as there are some rough buildings between nice areas. I walked alone so would usually cut it short if I felt uneasy. They are opening a new place next door and they had a "soft" opening when we were there. It was loud and crazy! Glad it only lasted one day we were there. We chose this resort based on reviews that it was quiet and older crowd. We enjoyed playing the games in the casino. They are only automated games but we enjoyed. Most people I met felt that the resort was a 3.5 rating. I gave it a 4.0 because of the staff, and I knew it wasn't going to be the best resort we have visited nor the worst. But, we had a GREAT TIME! Thanks to all. Especially our buddy RAUL! One more thing--they gave us chocolate covered strawberries in our room for our anniversary and invited us to a social, but we had a dinner reservation and was unable to attend. Again, very thoughtful!

Perfect Vacation!

This was the perfect place. Not too big and not too small. Had all the amenities you could want. Staff was wonderful and the food and beverages were tasty and plentiful. Rooms were clean. The pools and beach area great. There were activities going on all the time. You could participate or just relax.

Where do I begin? I will say , I originally was set to stay at the Sonesta Maho. When I arrived there was an issue with no water and a super angry group in the lobby. After speaking to Laura at the front desk at Maho, she kindly moved us to Great Bay. WHAT AN UPGRADE!!! This place was beautiful. My room fully renovated and clean. The restaurants do need to be booked in advance via a kiosk in the main lobby. The Waters Edge was the only one we could get into for our 6 day stay and it was amazing. Cooking your own food is a cool concept. Just slice the meat up so it will cook evenly and completely and you will have no issue. All the staff members were very kind. Upon leaving Vicky at the front desk was very nice as well. Top notch staff from the cleaning crew , towel staff, bellmen, casino workers. I thoroughly enjoyed my interactions with all the people here.My only complaint here was breakfast. If you arrived after 9:30am it was slim pickins. I think I was only able to get bacon one morning out of 5 :( Lunch: Burgers were good, fish tacos so good, fish bites and wings yummy. Dinner buffet was like any other buffet, find something you like and eat it. The fried fritters were also a hit. Gym: The gym is ok -if you know what to do with limited weights-. There's only a few 5,6,9,10- then it skips to 35-40 lbs dumb bells. Theres 2 treadmills, but only one was working during my stay. There are a few ellipticals and bikes and machines for upper body and lower body. The gym is clean there with water, towels, and Lysol wipes TO WIPE YOUR EQUIPMENT DOWN AFTER YOU SWEAT ON IT.**SNEAK TIPS***There are pool noodles by the swim up bar if you want to float in paradiseThere is also a food truck to the far left of the property with very good options included in your stay!!!Fish tacos are AMAZING HERE. ** Getting around** $20-per way for a cab ride anywhere. $2 on the bus if you can figure them out. (Took us the whole week to get the hang of it)Overall a friendly & beautiful island.

Not a 4 star!

Despite being well located, the Sonesta Great Bay resort is run down and in much need of repairs. It is advertised as a 4 star but is nothing more than a 3 star at best. The room in which stayed for our first 2 nights was extremely disappointing. The handle on the toilette was broken and would not flush, mold and rust in the bathroom, the shower/tub combination made it difficult to get in and out of the shower (we are tall and had to duck our heads to get in and to fit under shower head). After 2 nights and many complaints we were given a new room. It was better but was situated next to a lagoon which was unsightly and smelled like sewage.Due to heavy rainfall prior to our arrival, the lagoon had been opened and was flowing directly into the ocean. The smell and the look of the lagoon water did not make the beach appealing to sit by or swim at.Although the food is tasty and the hotel has 3 eating areas, there is only ever 2 choices of places to eat directly at the Sonesta Great Bay hotel (not including Maho); buffet or 1 restaurant (Il Pescatore and Water's Edge do not open on the same nights...). There are other restaurants available at the Sonesta Maho but you have to find your own way there.This is a quiet hotel and is good for adults who want to turn in early. If you are looking for lively evenings, this is not the place.If you are ok with staying at a 2.5 -3 star hotel, then this is the place for you.
