Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino

This is our third trip back to Sonesta Maho. We love it there. The staff are friendly, food is good, hotel is clean, environment is relaxing, watching the planes arrive and depart us always awesome, beach is clean, water is clear and warm, what's not to like? Mind you, you need to get to the pool early if you require shade to sit in. I love the sun, but hubby needs the shade, so we did the hunt early in the morning. No problem though. Always found a spot and could move if needed. I found this time that the wait staff were significantly slower than usual - let me clarify, the younger wait staff. The older ones, were terrific! I get and appreciate the whole "island time" thing, but honest to God, if some of the younger staff worked any slower, they'd be moving backwards. St Maarten never disappoints - weather is terrific, there's lots to do and see (if that is what you want), but most importantly it's the best place to simply rest, relax and re-charge.
Had a fun , relaxing time at the Sonesta, excellent location, close to airport and shopping, some awesome employees, like Ramon at the swim up bar, Eduardo at the pool stand/towel stand and Tomita, and Dorin, at the Palms Grill was fun, made our last day awesome and she made us a special ice cream desert
Very nice resort - clean; well-kept... seemed like there was always someone sweeping/raking the grounds; washrooms on the property also very clean. Great service at the buffet; bartenders at The Palm Grill were awesome.... bartenders at the pool bar seemed to have alternate good days and moody days..."man"opause maybe?? lol. Ate at three a la cartes - Palms Grill; you finish cooking your meal on a bed of hot coals - our server was AWESOME! Meal - FANTASTIC! Jings - the Chinese place - also great - they cook your meal tableside - also excellent service. And The Point - awesome meal - small portions; but very tasty! Excellent service again! We did one excursion - the sunset cruise aboard the Tango. GREAT crew; friendly service - nice meal. $87/person and well worth it. Beach was small; but did make for nice walks in the morning. Rooms nice and big, very clean; and the mini fridge gets re-stocked daily. Biggest complaint - AVOID a room that overlooks the casino and what seems to be a garden.. VERY LOUD!! We were on the 8th floor and the Karaoke bar starts at 8; and then a disco plays very, very loud music till about 2am. The A/C does drown out the disco; but it is also loud. No real issues - friendly check in/check out; buffet food could have been slightly hotter (It was pretty much luke warm) but, hey it is a buffet - everything was tasty. All in all we did enjoy ourselves, but it is over-priced. We would not hesitate to go back if the price were to go down a bit!!
This is not a large resort. It is not like in Cuba, or Dom Rep, where you have these huge resorts, several pools and lots and lots of people... This is almost like a private resort, good for relaxing... 8 floors, about 40 rooms per floor. There is one very nice pool, a small beach area on a terrasse, 1 buffet restaurant and one restaurant by the sea. But you will have access, for free, with your bracelet, to 2 other restaurants on the strip, right outside the hotel, and for the price of a taxi cab (or rental car) you will also be able to go to the Great Bay Sonesta (18+)... at 0 cost: its the sister, pricier Sonesta resort, more elegant maybe, with slightly better restaurants, buffet and a Jacuzzi, a superbe view of the bay (Philipsburg) but, honestly, we found that the sand is nicer at Maho :) Also, note that 10 minutes walk from Sonesta Maho you have another a-ma-zing- beach!! called Mullet bay beach, right by the golf course.Ideally you rent a car on the Tuesday morning for one or two days to tour the island. there is so much to see and do, (driving is easy, safe enough with minimum normal precaution) + Tuesday night is ''Mardi gras'' in Grand Case on the north side of the island... worth the trip and cheaper to go by car than to go with the hotel.Sonesta Maho all inclusive is a nice place, where you will get all the basics you need.... sun, beach, sea, good food, and a permanent airshow... throughout the day planes land by the hotel, (check photos) at the airport... quite interesting. People are friendly, our rooms were very clean, the staff did everything to help us with our requests and I had champagne, balloons and nice plate of fresh fruits waiting or me in my room when we arrived, since my travel agent mentioned it was my b'day.Love this place.... was the second time... and probably not the last!
The resort is in an excellent location, and has such scenic spots over looking the ocean. The rooms were very outdated however, but it didn't bother us as we were never in the rooms. The staff were helpful and welcoming. The only complaint I have for our stay is that the bars close so early and therefore do not cater to the younger crowd. The only option is to travel about 20 Minutes away for a decent bar/nightclub and being ripped off by taxi drivers there. Otherwise we truly enjoyed our stay and we will definitely be back. Also the restaurant is WAYY better than the buffet food options.
