"St. Maarten Vacation"

My wife and I spent a week in our island paradise. For years we have been spending the holidays at the Westin St Maarten Dawn Beach Resort. As we have come to expect year after year, the staff is amazing and make us feel like family. The employees are all genuinely interested in providing us with a great stay. We are met with smiles and a “welcome back” with hugs from the bellman and front desk. The pool staff, waitresses and bartenders are terrific, and the restaurant staff is always ready to start our day off right. The steak and sea food in Aura Restaurant is amongst the finest that we experience in our favorite restaurants in Marigot and Grand Case. Had a fantastic hot rock massage at the Hibiscus Spa.It is truly amazing to see that the service style starts from the top down. The managers are all proactive and check in with us daily no matter where we are to make sure that all is fantastic. Weather was beautiful. We choose not to drive as we wish to enjoy a libation or two ( why not when we are on vacation) so we make arrangements with our old friend Marcel who is the best private taxi service on island. He cares about us as if we were family. This place is highly recommended. It was tough to come back to the snow and cold of New York.

Our favorite hotel in the Caribbean!

After a long road trip (2600 miles) and a couple disappointing hotels in Tennessee with the kids, my wife and I decided to get away to our favorite hotel in the Caribbean, this Westin in St. Maarten. We've stayed here several times before and have enjoyed it tremendously every time. There is nothing quite like opening the glass doors looking out at the sea upon arriving to hear and smell the sea! The staff is very warm and accommodating; I appreciate the little things like the way they open the door for you as you enter the restaurant or go outside to eat. My wife enjoyed their new water aerobics class and I always enjoyed a deep tissue massage at the spa. We love the pool here. From the extra shallow areas, to the infinity waterfall to the lower pool, to the swim up bar, it is very very picturesque. It instantly relaxes me and I could stay there all day. While we have been all over the island to eat and enjoy the beaches, we found ourselves staying here this time. The beach here is quite large and very secluded. We always enjoy the breakfast buffet; my favorite is the Eggs Benedict. The servers and employees are extremely prompt; if you've been to the Caribbean, you know this is hard to find! We are always sad to leave. We will be back with our two children soon! Thank you!!

Not worth it when there are so many other wonderful places

This is a lovely resort that is definitely on island time. Our rooms were amply sized with an oversized bathroom - loved it! Halls are spacious. The beds are quite comfortable and the linens are very nice. The infinity pool and hot tub are beautiful. The Concierge, check-in staff and baggage handlers displayed excellent customer service skills. During our visit the power went out on the Dutch side of the island, though the resort did not seem to suffer. Check out is at 11:20, so we had to leave our rooms and wait 40 minutes for the onsite brunch before leaving. Of course, there are many lovely places to wait. What we didn't like: The Green Program. If you don't want your towels/sheets exchanged, they credit you $5 to use in resort or points. Problem is that they don't clean, either. They will refill used items, but that's it. Seems like a questionable deal to us - we won't do it in the future. We could not find a room guide. I can't remember any hotel, B&B or inn that did not have some kind of printed or electronic guide to the resort or room available. Makes it super challenging to take advantage of services either included or additional. Parts of the resort are showing wear and tear: poorly patched ceiling leak, broken tiles, worn wood railings. Not 5 Star clean: our room had visible fingerprints and smudges, dirty windows and hair from the previous occupants. The common restrooms on the first floor were poorly stocked and had a distinct scent not normally associated with clean restrooms. Attention to timeshares: Timeshare staff hang out in the main walkway and recruit passers by for timeshare presentation. A good part of the resort is devoted to timeshare sales. Poolside service: at other 5-star resorts, staff appear to be eager to help you. Here, we had to find towels and where to get food (you have to special order after 5pm). The bar had just one overworked bartender. Good luck with the swim-up bar; we never saw anyone getting service there. We did put in a special order for food, but it took awhile. Unfortunately, one of the dishes was wrong, but we couldn't locate the server to notify her until much later.Dining choices: staying here, you are cut off from other areas of the island by a very steep incline that is challenging when dry. You pretty much need to take a taxi to go anywhere. There are 2 restaurants, Ocean and Aura. Ocean is more reasonably priced.

St Maarten vacation

Great trip. The Westin Dawn Beach was wonderful. Pool and beach were great along with food. The casino very sleepy and non smoking as all of Westin resort. We would go to dinner and gamble at casino's within 30 minutes. There is a steady breeze at beach so water sports not happening. We did have one day where had paddleboards delivered and had out in water. If not experienced rider or athletic don' really recommend. Trip to Pinel Island was awesome. They have a boat transport or you can rent kayak. We rented paddleboards but a bit of a battle against wind on way there but easy return. Eat at restaurant on the left side of island. Highly recommend day trip to St. Barts. We took the ferry and went to Nikki beach. This is fabulous but bring 2 check books as very expensive. Overall trip was excellent.

Secluded location

Just returned from a fabulous girls trip overall to celebrate a birthday for a family member. I really wanted to rate the hotel better but the location is super secluded, on a steep hill and quite a distance from everything. Renting a car was and is the best advice if you have any plans to see anything outside of the hotel. If your goal is stay on site for the duration of your stay you will enjoy this location however I would advise getting out and exploring as the island has better beaches than Dawn beach in my opinion. Friar Bay was our favorite!Upon arrival we were given a room on the first floor. There was a very noticeable mildew stench promptly upon entering the room. We called the front desk and they were great about switching us to a higher floor that day.Overall the staff is helpful and friendly but the location just was not to our liking. I would not recommend this hotel based on that.
