The gulf beaches are well regarded for their beaches. Fort Desoto was once rated the number one beach in America by the annual Dr. Beach rankings. All beaches are a short 10-15 minutes west of the city of St. Petersburg.

St. Petersburg's is a popular tourist, and retirement destination. And it's no wonder why it has been nicknamed "The Sunshine City" with an average of some 360 days of sunshine each year. There are many wonderful museums and attractions here, and the waterfront downtown is one of Florida's most pleasant.

The nearby beaches skirting the narrow barrier islands run for some 40 km between St Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach. With water on three sides of the city, St Petersburg is a superb location for fishing, sailing, and wandering beaches.

Activities & Sports
Being located so close to the Gulf of Mexico it is a great destination for those seeking hours of fun in the sun and water. Boating, fishing, water sports, kayak, kite surfing, windsurfing, snorkeling, tubing and cruising on jet skis are some of the available activities.

On land you can rent bicycles or go hiking in one of the many parks or preserve. If you love golf, then you'll find nearly 100 golf courses throughout the Clearwater and St. Petersburg area. There are more than 30 championship golf courses as well to be found. Some courses to try include:
  • In St Pete: Cypress Links, Twin Brooks, Mangrove Bay.
  • In Largo: East Bay Golf Course, Pinecrest.
  • In Tampa: Rocky Point, Rogers Park, Babe Zaharius, City of Tampa Courses, Heritage Harbor.
  • In Clearwater: Airco Golf Course, Clearwater Country Club.
  • In Tarpon Springs: Tarpon Springs Golf Course.

Dining & Nightlife
There are many various entertainment venues which offer performances of all kinds. Check out the schedules of the Arts Center, Florida Craftsmen, Mahaffey Theater, or the Jannus Landing.

Baywalk, located in the heart of downtown, is a fine place to enjoy the areas fine dining, shopping and entertainment. The Ringside Cafe features live Blues music every night from various musicians and is always a hot spot among the locals. Most of the nightlife downtown can be found on/near Central Avenue.

There are many small bars on the beaches to the west side of the peninsula and scattered throughout the area.
 
You will find restaurants to everyone's liking here, from fast-food joints, to chain restaurants, to gastronomic bistros. One local specialty to try is the Grouper Sandwich.

The Baywalk shopping complex has many great chain restaurants. Next to the Sunken Gardens site there is a stretch of fine dining establishments. For a real treat head for the Pier's historic Columbia Restaurant. 
 
Shopping
The Baywalk shopping complex, which also has a new Imax, is a very popular place to shop, as is the Pier. As you walk along these two sopping venues you will notice an interesting number of smaller art galleries as well.

Also, every Saturday morning, from October to May, the downtown area holds a farmers market. Local produce farmers can be found selling their fruits and veggies. The live bands, barbecue vendors, and artists of all kinds make this an entertaining outing.

In St-Pete Beach try the Ellenton Outlet Mall.

In Tampa look for the International Plaza Mall and the Westshore Plaza Mall.

Climate: St-Petersburg enjoys warm year round. Summers are very hot and humid, winters a re drier and a little bit cooler. Sometimes when it rains in St. Pete, it literally pours! The average year high is 27° C and the average year low is 18° C.
The hurricane season runs through summer and fall with the peak of the season in September. But it has been many years since the area was directly hit by a hurricane.
