Not good

Stayed this hotel last year enjoyed it then. Nightmare this year undergoing renovation. Not mentioned to us anywhere in the booking process. Ear plugs on the pillow was a great give away. Noisy dusty, breakfast experience was horrendous no tables long queues limited choice. Staff indifferent to any complaints. Never again.

Great location a bit old

Stayed here while they were renovating the exterior but wasn't bothered by it since we were mostly out and about. Very close to the grand via shopping and walking distance to major tourist sites like the palace. Even with the refurbishment of the rooms we were in some of the amenities felt old.

Good hotel, under renovation

Good hotel, but under renovation (in nov/16). Rooms big and confortable, old, but wuth the reform I think it will be change in next time.Good service and location, so many restaurants around the hotel, that you could go walking. Some touristic places near also.

The hotel from hell

I was in Madrid on holiday and stayed at the MERCURE MADRID PLAZA DE ESPANA (10/04/2017- 20/04/2017). It looked to be well situated – not being far from a Metro station with access for the disabled - which is important for me as I am partially disabled. According to the MERCURE MADRID PLAZA DE ESPANA website, the 4* hotel had a rooftop terrace bar and a dining room on site. In addition, there was a lift. There were many photographs of the interior which made it look very attractive. The reservation was non-refundable and could not be cancelled or changed. We had been allocated a 3rd floor room.On arrival, the hotel is enshrouded in scaffolding covered in a wire meshing with broken stonework around the entire visible, or should I say invisible, building. One of the two lifts was being renovated and was therefore unusable. It transpired that due to renovating the premises into ‘THE HOTEL OF MY DREAMS’, the 2nd floor was a construction site.Around 11.00 the following morning, my husband (Bill) and I tried to exit the hotel and waited some 10 minutes for the lift. It did not appear. Bill walked down the three flights and I hobbled after him. At some point, after we had retired for the night, a notice had been put up indicating that the lift would be ‘OUT OF ORDER’ between 12 00 and 14.00 hours that afternoon. The owner, JEAN~MICHEL PALLINGER, appeared and said he would rectify the situation. That was the last we saw of him. The hotel engineer came and conducted us through the breakfast room and then the kitchen into a service lift which took us up to our room. He provided us with his ‘phone no. and asked us to contact him when we were ready to leave. We did and he led us back, by the same root, to the reception area. This situation was repeated on the Thursday night around 10.30pm. This time we were taken through the garage and into a lift. There was no rooftop terrace or dining room as they were supposedly under reconstruction. There was not a bar on site either. The automatic door was problematic and sometimes denied you entry.I also understand that the work is unlikely to be finished by the end of June. I would like to reiterate that the reception staff were all very helpful. At no point was I offered compensation/a refund from this expensive hotel.

City break

Stayed for 4 nights in our first visit to Madrid. Hotel is being renovated but we were given a super room. Staff were all very friendly and keen to help. Breakfast was mote than ample with lots of variety. The hotel is conveniently placed to walk to many of the major sites and within 10 minutes walk of the Royal Palace, which is stunning. We'll certainly return to Madrid again and will book this hotel again.
