Definitely one of the nicer hotels I've been in (and more expensive). Clean, modern, spacious, lots of amenities. The only downside is it's location. The staff are absolutely great--Robin and Jenny in particular were very helpful.
A friend and I stayed there for a night, it is quite far out from the centre of Zurich and it took a 15 minute tram journey to get there. It has nice facilities, toilets and showers were very clean and nice. Our room was okay but the mattress protectors were a bit scratchy and felt like towels. The dinner was fine but you could better food from a lot of places around the hostel and probably better value. It is only a short walk to lake Zurch and there is an area nearby where you can swim on the lake which is lovely.
I, along with with my wife and children, stayed at the hostel during 13-16 Aug. 16. Based on my limited exposure of staying in the hi hostels, perhaps this is one of the best, if not the best. The downside - it is too expensive to be hostel. It is well connected both with tram and bus and it takes roughly 20 minutes to reach the city center.Above all, what makes it unusual is its wonderful staff.I was robbed in Italy and lost my credit cards amongst other many things. The staff was kind and supportive. On my request, they talked to Youth Hostel in Paris, where I was supposed to go afterwards, explained my situation and helped me sort out several things including my payment to the hostel in Paris. I express my thankfulness to the entire hostel team. Would definitely stay again (though wish if prices could be made affordable for the budget travelers).
Location is good in terms of environment but you won't find much in the surrounding area. Staffs were helpful. The rooms are fine except the facilities are minimum. There is wifi only in the lobby which is not even very strong everywhere. It is kind of disappointing that you have to replace your bed and pillow cover by yourself when you are leaving. The pleasant surprise is their breakfast which is free. A little less price could have make it a worth.
It has nice facilities but overall is very overpriced and they charge for everything like a wounded bull. If you want to eat cheaply (noodle cups etc) go down the road to the supermarket, they also charge almost triple the price for beer compared to the supermarket. To wash and dry clothes costs 10 francs and you must also provide your own laundry liquid. It's Switzerland, it's expensive. It says youth hostel but it certainly doesn't have that vibe around it that I would expect, not the hostels fault, but it can be hard to strike up a conversation downstairs because it's the only place you get wifi and have standard European charging ports so everyone is just sitting on their phones.
