We stayed at Ocean Club West from December 28 to Jan 4th. We rented the condo on VRBO. The unit that we got has the Ocean Club banner it was actually the suites at the very back of the resort and part of the condos over the strip plaza. We however had full access to this beautiful pristine resort. It was unclear to us and the employees whether we could access the tennis courts and bicycles. Regardless it was not a big deal as the gym, while small provided a good holiday workout with basic equipment. There are beach towels and chairs on the beach and security keeps a good watch over things. Not that we were concerned in the least. The restaurant is good for snacks however we preferred to go out to dinner. Tip: book your restaurants months in advance. The good ones like Coco Bistro will be fully booked. We purchased a day pass at Club Med for US $75 for New Years. Amazing night-so well done with DJ, all inclusive drinks, countdown and fireworks on the beach Overall Ocean Club West is preferred over the older East. We would stay there again.
We have always LOVED OCW. Its been our go to place when visiting Provo, however we were really saddened to see so much smoking despite it being a smoke free resort, and really wish security and other staff would have addressed it. By the pool, in the grill area, and on the beach people were smoking cigarettes and cigars. It was difficult to enjoy a meal at the grills with the smoking, lay by the pool with people smoking, and then digging up cigarettes in the OCW sand. We asked a staff member if smoking was allowed and they said no, but we also saw several staff members walk right by people smoking and not say anything. It is something we wish the resort would really enforce. We did not experience this at OCW in the past. We've always felt it was a great family so this was a little dissapointing.
The catch with OCW is that units are owner furnished, so the decor and quality varies widely. This year our unit's decor was not to our taste and we found some of the furnishings and artwork rather creepy. Maybe it's just that I don't like birds and rusty boat parts, but it gave me a not-so-relaxing feeling. Some of the (sharp, rusty) items were also not particularly safe for my young kids to play around. Noise from the restaurant/bar was distracting. Last year's unit was much nicer! The buildings are also starting to show their age. We had small problems. No hot water (twice) which was fixed quickly, toilets running on (also fixed), and several of the window shutters didn't work (some stuck open, others stuck closed). Noisy repairs were ongoing elsewhere in the building. Management did send out an apologetic notice. I guess it's good that they're addressing problems.Internet was somewhat unreliable and intermittent this time around. We had some trouble streaming videos. As soon as we got to the point of being ready to complain, it would come back full force. Overall a minor inconvenience. I didn't come to Grace Bay to watch TV or browse the web.We were disappointed to hear that the former on-site restaurant, which we loved, has closed. New on-site restaurant was not great. Long wait (+/-1 hour) for mediocre overpriced food. Not nearly as good as it had been.Despite our oddly decorated suite and some maintenance issues this year, OCW remains our go-to place on Providenciales. The freeform pool is perfect for lazy swimming and its mostly shallow water is great for kids. The casual atmosphere and relatively attentive service are always appreciated. The beach is one of the most stunning I've ever seen. The location is perfect for walking to the various restaurants and shops in Grace Bay.We're looking forward to our return next year.
We had a 2 bedroom suite on the ocean. Much more than we expected Well decorated and loved all the screened windows and balconies. Furniture and beds were comfortable. Our suite had a full kitchen and living room. Loved hanging on the balcony during the early morning to listen to the waves. Had a nice restaurant right On the beach. Food is good for lunch and snacking but did not eat dinner so can't comment. Tons of beach furniture and toys for the beach. A ton of activities for the whole family: tennis, fitness room, bicycles, Paddleboards, and kayaks. Only downfall is very few chairs available at poolside. The worst part is by 8am all the chairs were already taken not by people but their towels and possessions. When there is such limited seating this shouldn't be allowed. Your but should be in it to win it! For this reason I rate this a 4.
Ocean Club West is a full service resort. We thoroughly enjoyed that bikes, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards were available all day and easily accessible. Once you sign the waiver and get your wrist tag you can use any of these throughout your stay. We soon realized that Solana's (their ocean front restaurant) had the best food and atmosphere so we stopped searching for lunch stops after a few "not so great places". Their sushi rolls were delicious! We were a lively crowd of 9 friends so we did have to be told to quiet down at 11:30 pm. This is actually a great service to the guest who want a peaceful vacation. ( We did apologized for our enthusiasm!). Another feature to access is the free shuttle to Ocean Club East. This allowed some diverisity of venues and restaurants, and you can easily walk back to OCW.
