When I planned our Turks and Caicos trip, I was beyond thrilled because of all the positive things I had heard about Grace Bay. Unfortunately, the week we visited, the aftermath of Hurricane Joachim left Grace Bay super dangerous to swim in. The waves were about 9 feet tall and were constantly knocking people off their feet. The sun was barely out and there was absolutely nothing to do at the resort. To be honest, the best thing about our trip was the lovely staff at the Pelican Bay restaurant and the casino next door! The pool was super small and the resort was very quiet. I think Turks is well suited for people who enjoy quiet time reading on the beach...which is perfectly fine, but definitely not for my husband and I.It's also super duper expensive if you're a drinker! Our "tabs" were never less than $100 lol, but they do have a happy hour! We still easily spent at least $300 per day on food and drinks. The rooms were not bad either. We had the basic room type and it included a very large fridge and microwave. We did go on a snorkeling day cruise to half moon bay, which was pretty fun.Overall, nothing special...go to Aruba!
I want to start by saying my husband and I don't require much to be happy. No luxuries, no exceptional settings (though its always nice!)...for us it is a genuine human interaction and human experience just as much as a gorgeous backdrop that really make an holiday special. It pains me to write anything but stellar/glowing reviews, but I want to be very transparent about our time at RWI. We really wanted to love our experience with RWI, but it came up quite short for us. For really valuing customer service, it was mediocre at best. It started with the couple of calls I made ahead of our trip to ensure all staff and buildings were safe and sound after Hurricane Matthew. The receptionists were very short on the phone, often sounding perturbed with getting a call with genuinely concerned questions about their safety. It didn't get much better when we were there, unfortunately. I can get past curtness and lack of friendliness, but what I find mildly offensive is a lack of eye contact and overall lackadaisicalness. You could just tell they didn't want to be there, let alone be in a customer facing role. We are generally really positive and peppy people, but my mood was always slightly impaired after interacting with any of the receptionists. We had a very similar service at Pelican Bay bar on Day 1 - we sat at the bar for (no joke) 15 minutes watching the bartender make 2 sets of cocktails before we even got eye contact! We purposely didn't eat or drink there the entire time because of the poor customer service, and made sure to be out and adventuring/beaching/relaxing and getting as much positivity as much as we could!I'd like to say this was as bad as it got, which in the grand scheme of things wasn't that bad....unfortunately, it got worse :( On day 2, my husband and I started getting little bites on our bodies, random solo ones, clustered, or in little lines. Because we were scuba diving we immediately thought they were from sea lice, or the many ants by the poolside. It wasn't until we were back home for two days and I saw a new bite did it dawn at me that our bites were from BED BUGS!! Of course, we made sure to research the heck out of the bites, symptoms, etc. before we deduced it was dreaded BBs. Needless to say I panicked and essentially scalded all our clothes, bedsheets, suitcases, etc. to make sure we didn't bring anything back. So far so good, but because bites are dormant up until 2 weeks later, I'm paranoidly checking our bed, clothes, closet, bathroom, and DOG! I called them to let them know there is a good chance we got the bites from either the bed or the sofa in our suite, and not that I was expecting anything different, I didn't get much of a reaction whatsoever. Not surprising considering the general attitude there, but you'd think with even a hint of talk of BBs (I can barely say it I'm so disturbed), there would be some kind of a reaction or follow-up - nada. All in all Turks and Caicos is a lovely resort island if that's what your cup of tea is. And with that, there are many resorts to choose from before RWI.
My husband and I came here in July. The hotel is a bit of a drive from the airport, we took a taxi and I believe it was $50 for us both. The hotel is very nice and clean. The rooms are clean and modern, ours had a small kitchenette with fridge, sink, and microwave. There are two pools, one was located right by our room which was the "quiet" pool. The other was more by the beach and by the restaurant. The food at the restaurant is OK, nothing spectacular. The beach is the most beautiful water I've ever seen. We spent most of our time there. There are umbrellas and chairs that you can use. There are some water sports on the beach (stand up paddleboard, kayaks, etc) that we did not use, but many others did and I believe it is free. There is a supermarket that is a ten minute bike ride from the resort. The resort has bikes that you can rent. Would definitely suggest this resort to anyone thinking about going to Turks and Caicos! The only thing I can complain about is the service is not very good. The people are not very friendly or helpful.
