Best Western The Cromwell
- What's Included
The price is very attractive for the location, but the hotel leaves plenty to be desired. If you don't plan on spending much time in the room (as was the case with us), then save your money and stay here. Just know that in doing so you'll be sleeping in the equivalent of a college door room, in both size and furnishings. Our room had two twin beds, but it might as well have been one full sized mattress because they were pushed together, and there wasn't enough room to separate them and still be able to fit between the bed and the wall. There was a tiny closet but no dresser, and for some reason there was a small wooden desk up against the wall, I guess in keeping with the dorm room feel. The elevator was tiny, but it worked. The staff was friendly.
This hotel has good value for money and great location. It is small and boxy and the staff are not that friendly..could be cultural as most of them seem to be from Eastern Europe. But the hotel is basic, clean with good internet and very close to the tube station. There is a grocery story across the road and restaurants and cafes on the high road. The rooms are box and with strange layouts but they are comfortable enough for a short stay.
As my title indicates, the location of this hotel was fabulous! The location was 5 stars, the hotel was 3 1/2 stars. Kensington is just beautiful, and this hotel is near everything we needed. The tube, a wonderful grocery, Starbucks, and quite a number of restaurants were all within 1 to 3 blocks away. We felt very comfortable in this part of the city and quickly became acquainted with the area. The hotel itself? The people at the front desk were very helpful, especially a young man named Chris and a lovely Eurasian girl who went out of her way for us. The room was very small by American standards, but we find this to be true in most big cities, even NY, unless you're staying in a very upscale place. We paid about $180 a night here for a very clean room with a very comfortable bed. There was nothing fancy, but all of our needs were met and we were very satisfied. When we are traveling abroad, we want comfort, clean, and friendly and that is exactly what we got here. We spend very little time in the room so it doesn't matter to us that we can't play volleyball in it. We would definitely stay here again. So... if you want large, go elsewhere, but if you plan to be out sightseeing and trying the local cuisine, give The Cromwell a try. Oh, by the way, Best Westerns in Europe are very different from the Best Westerns here in the US. Be sure to check out the websites to get a feel for where you're going. We stayed at a Best Western Premier in Entebbe, Uganda that was fabulous, so don't let the name sway you.
Stayed here for three nights at the end of September. The hotel is in a great location pretty much opposite a tube station and within walking distance of Hyde Park and Exhibition Road which contains many of London's great museums such as the V&A and the Science Museum. There are some issues though, on arrival we were shown to a tiny ground floor room with a tiny window and the room smelt horrendously of damp. The staff however were very helpful and moved us to the top floor to an equally tiny room with a tiny window that didn't open. This wasn't too bad for a short trip and you can pay a lot more for an upgraded room which I assume has more space. The room itself was clean but did have some signs of wear and tear such as a loose toilet seat and damage to the fixtures and fittings. If you have mobility problems I would contact the hotel before booking as despite having a lift you still need to negotiate several flights of stairs. On the positive side as well as the location breakfast was excellent and the staff were very helpful and friendly there is also a small cosy bar with a very reasonable happy hour.
Our first impression of the Best Western the Cromwell was the narrow steep stairs at the entrance; worse - the railing starts on the second step as there is a column on the first. Imagine doing this with luggage/a baby carriage... But even without, every time we went out and back in the stairs were a challenge, to say the least. Only three stairs, but when one cannot put a foot straight on the stairs without half of it in the air, and the height which looks more than the width it was plain scary. This would be the main reason why we would be reluctant to return to this hotel.Otherwise the hotel was just a regular chain hotel. The room very crowded, though it had two chairs (a first for us in such hotels). The bathroom was new and "designed" but very impractical: for example the towel racks as far from the shower as the room allowed, the pod-like toilet did not allow placing anything on its top. The shower head was not maintained properly so water went out horizontally and the whole floor was one big puddle after taking a shower. Nothing major to complain about, though definitely not memorable or in any way tempting to return on our next visit to London.
