We were greeted by a disinterested looking lady who directed us to our room. Down to the basement we went to find a room just big enough to fit a bed, a tiny wardrobe and a desk. The room looked clean apart from a patch of black mould at the bottom of the wardrobe. We opened the curtains to see our view...of a brick wall. The room had no natural light. The heating didn't work properly and the bed didn't fit either of us in lengthwise (The shortest of us being 5'8").Positives. We were allowed to check in half an hour early. When our lights tripped they were fixed promptly. We were allowed to store our bags for the day after checking out. There was a bar.
Stayed here 5 nights en route to a holiday in Europe. The location is a major plus. As with many older London hotels, it's a bit of a warren, but helpful staff overcome most problems. Definitely not 4 star by my standards, but nevertheless a good hotel for the purpose. Aircon pretty ineffective, but the windows in our room opened (onto Cromwell Rd). Close to Gloucester Rd tube station, buses past the door, place for a cab to stop outside. Idiosyncratic approach to maintenance: 3 items reported on first day: one (failed lamp globe) fixed by third day, the other 2 (including another lamp globe) not done before we left. Steps at the front could be a problem for the infirm, esp with luggage. Tariff reflects major city prices, but it is good value.
We booked a garden room(210) for one night as attending concert at Royal Albert Hall. Room had a queen size bed with tea & coffee making facilities and a compact shower room. Doors led out to a small balcony overlooking beautiful garden. Only down side was the rainfall shower head was faulty but did have a hand held shower as alternative. Towels were very small for larger built guests!! Overall would recommend and would stay again. Very pleasant Spanish receptionist.
given the alternatives such as travelodge and premier inn the hotel represents poor value. the rooms are tiny and old fashioned although clean the shower door fell off the runners and the shower head leaked therefore reduced shower head pressure
Literally, this hotel is a maze. You could go crazy trying to find your room or reception especially if you don't use the same lift each time. Checkin is quick and you get the feeling right away that it's a different kind of hotel when your room number starting with a 6 is in the basement. Not all rooms in the six hundreds are here, they could be on ground level as well. Whacky best describes the numbering logic. Being prepared for a small room as previous reviewers have stated doesn't exactly prepare you for the shock when you see it for real. Our box in the basement was made even more claustrophobic because it had relatively no light entering it due to its location. Staff were happy to find us another room however the next room offered was even smaller but on a higher floor. So tight it was between the open door, the bed and the desk you had to turn sideways to fit through the gap. Luckily the next room on level four was of a respectful size overlooking Cromwell Rd. We grabbed it even though the A/C made an odd noise constantly. We turned it off and opened the filthy windows. A good genuine double bed and newish bathroom but nowhere to put a toiletries bag. Excellent TV and WIFI that never missed a beat in 3 days. Breakfast room is in the basement and is relatively small so best to avoid peak times. Quality was good as was the staff. I would return but only if they could give me a decent size room.
