Definitely not a 4 star apartment. The man behind the front desk said they were closing down soon and it's clear to see why. The apartment was big but sparsely furnished and stank of stale cigarettes. Won't be returning.
I booked this for 8 company members including myself. I requested 3 quadruple rooms, which have 2 double beds, 1 en suite, 1 bathroom a kitchen and a lounge with dining table. I ordered 2 double rooms for the remaining male and female members of staff and they got a suite too, with a double and a single bed. The place was very clean, Note there are a warren of corridors, so take this into account if booking with any walking problems, request a ground floor room near reception. Our room was on the 4th, it was lovely and quiet. We were only there one night but I would definitely recommend this hotel for a longer stay especially families, it has everything you would need include a well appointed kitchen. There were 4 people checking us in and I think the receptionist on her own would probably have been quicker - my only slight criticism. The location is in Islington and a 10 minute walk (if that from the Angel tube), very easy to find. We walked from Kings Cross and it took us an unhurried 25 minutes.
The appartment size was really nice but we've been disappointed by the materials and equipment. Besides, the cleaning is not that perfect. Generally speaking some make-over would not be luxury such as soundproofing the flats.
It's not at all easy to find a reasonable space in central London for around £100 a night, so you'd need to be a little forgiving if you're lucky enough to find something matching these criteria.Handily positioned towards The City side of Islington, this Citadines property is not the most handsome, but it does have space in abundance. I got a 3rd floor, 1-bedroom apartment, with good living/dining space and kitchen as well as the bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom was probably the poorest aspect to the apartment - very old and tired, with a broken shower head which kept sliding down to the bottom of its pole. Facilities were a mixed bag. Wifi was ok once connected, but it could take a few minutes to connect each time. The TV has just the bare minimum terrestrial channels, and my TV kept switching itself off every 5 minutes or so for no reason. The iron self-cleaned itself all over my suit trousers. However, there was a decent toaster which made me a good few satisfying rounds of toast, a kettle which worked, a fridge that chilled my drinks nicely and a washing machine which I didn't try out.The bedroom was functional, though the window single-glazed and facing the perpetually-busy City Road, and the walls adjoining the next apartment the thickness of 2 pieces of paper taped together (you hear quite literally everything..) The bed was nice and comfy though. Very important!Against most Londoners' advice, I took my car in, only really possible thanks to Citadines' gated parking, charged at £15 a day. However, don't forget that this is in the Congestion Zone, so add £11.50 a day onto that for each day you use your car on the road.I should mention one slightly odd exchange which I shared with one of the male cleaning staff. I called the lift, and when it arrived, it was pretty much full - with just about enough room for me to step in too - with the cleaner and all his equipment. I asked if he minded if I stepped in, and he said, "Yes, of course.... Just makes things harder for me, that's all." I don't expect to encounter highly-polished, Swiss-trained staff in a Citadines, but I think an average level of decency and courtesy would be nice.To sum up, I didn't really enjoy staying here, but it was good value, and if I had to, I'd grit my teeth and stay here again, with expectation levels suitably set.
At first look, the property is old, very creepy, and pretty run down in general. May not be the nicest in London, but its a big apartment and what it lacks in exterior is made up in the size and interior of the apartments. I believe The Ascott Limited did a good job turning an otherwise run down building into decent apartments. In all, London definitely has better hotels, but with this apartment, you cannot complain for the value you receive. I can imagine this hotel is a nightmare to maintain and the efforts of the management definitely show.
